Notes: “The best aren't concerned with being the best. They're concerned with being the best at getting better.” Confidence: Confidence needs evidence. Acting with bravado we haven't earned only works on easy things. It backfires on anything truly challenging. Doing difficult things, even if you don't quite succeed at them, is how you develop real confidence. How do you find a good mentor? Do interesting things. Be open to learning and guidance. Be motivated, driven, and curious about something. Put your ego aside. Do good, quality work. The difference between real and fake toughness. Fake toughness is easy to identify. It's Bobby Knight losing control and throwing tantrums in the name of “discipline.” It's the appearance of power without substance behind it. Researchers out of Eastern Washington set out to explore the relationship between leadership style and the development of toughness. After conducting research on nearly two hundred basketball players and their coaches, they concluded, “The results of this study seem to suggest that the ‘keys' to promoting mental toughness do not lie in this autocratic, authoritarian, or oppressive style. It appears to lie, paradoxically, with the coach's ability to produce an environment, which emphasizes trust and inclusion, humility, and service. Sustained Excellence: Observation: the people who sustain success over the long haul are rarely shooting for success. They are focused on the path. Their goal is mastery, which knows no end. What characteristics do the best performers have? Don't get tired of the boring stuff Masters of compartmentalization Can flip the switch Know how to lose well Cultivate perspective Delayed gratification Drive from within Creating an enemy: Whenever an organization, group, or individual works hard to create an enemy to pit their idea/group against, it's a sign you probably shouldn't listen. Us vs. Them is the easiest way to exploit human nature, to get people on your side. It often means there's no substance there. The best way to get the most out of someone is to make them feel secure enough that they can take risks and fail. Most of us don't reach our potential because we default to protective mode. Threatening & demanding makes us protect further. Security and belonging frees us up. “Growth comes at the point of resistance. Skills come from struggle.” “The fact is that often coaches figure out what works in training and then the scientists come in later and explain why it works.” What can we learn about success and performance from Eliud Kipchoge? He is not fanatical about trying to be great all the time. He is consistent & patient. His coach says that the secret is that he makes progress “slowly by slowly.” Motivation + Discipline = Consistency He told The NY Times, "He estimates that he seldom pushes himself past 80 percent — 90 percent, tops — of his maximum effort when he circles the track." "I have a mindset whereby I am a human being. I am walking around as a human being. I learn to perform well at the same time being grounded. And I trust that being humble and being on the ground is the only way to concentrate" "You cannot train alone and expect to run a fast time. There is a formula: 100% of me is nothing compared to 1% of the whole team. And that's teamwork. That's what I value." “To be precise, I am just going to try to run my personal best. If it comes as a world record, I would appreciate it. But I would treat it as a personal best.”

After all, if you don't look after yourself, you'll get burned out and possibly have a breakdown. Time is a limited resource that cannot be replaced. So spend time with your loved ones. Those are the important things in life. Tip #4: Become more aware of your surroundings Have you always wanted to learn something or travel somewhere? Take your time. Consider a lesson or a trip. Experiencing doesn't require leaving your home. Find out what's unique about your area and go explore it. You never know what you'll find. Tip #5: Plan Your Time Time management is vital when you want to take back control of your life. That is, if your workday starts at 8 AM and concludes at 5 PM, you must stop at 5 PM. Sure, if you're finishing a project, you can go a bit late, but don't let work consume your life. You may need to schedule time with loved ones until you find balance. This is wonderful advice, especially if your work-life balance has gotten out of hand. Conclusion It's vital to regain control of your chaotic existence. Tanner Shuck (@tanner_shuck) is a strength and conditioning coach and fitness writer currently based in Dubai. After playing football at Rice University in college, Tanner found Crossfit and pursued a career in fitness. Tanner won the Dubai Fitness Championship in 2014 but unfortunately had been sidelined with injuries shortly after. Since then, he's been a coach for Crossfit and high performing athletes, and these days works mainly with general population clients to improve their fitness, and by association, their entire life. I reached out to Tanner after he posted this video, where he is encouraging us to live what he calls a “positively unbalanced” life: to go all in on the things that we are pursuing without holding back. That is the only way to be truly great at anything. Taking a balanced approach tends to lead to perpetually spinning your wheels, and never really making much forward progress. We spoke about this concept at length.As any good coach will tell you, the basics of exercise and nutrition are BY FAR the most important. Naturally, Tanner and I agreed on this and spoke about the importance of getting really good at these things. And then applying them forever: that is how you reach your goals, fitness or otherwise. Tanner is not the type of guy who will sugarcoat things; he's going to tell you like it is, and I admire that. One step beyond this though, is that Tanner really walks the walk. All the stuff he talks about, he actually does. Greetings, SuperFriends! For this week's episode, I got on a call with 2 incredibly smart authors, Brad Stulberg and Steve Magness. They are the co-authors of the new and highly anticipated book The Passion Paradox: A Guide to Going All-In, Finding Success, and Discovering the Benefits of an Unbalanced Life. You folks probably know that I'm passionate about passion - but the truth is, we've never actually had anyone on the show talk about it as a field of study or a field of Becoming SuperHuman. So, I wanted to have these 2 gentlemen on the show - and I learned that this is really an emerging field which is still not so well understood, similar to the way flow states were 20-30 years ago. In the episode, we talked about passion and how it is such an ambiguous, kind of misunderstood area of human experience, and we also set aside some time to really understand where these misconceptions are, how people perceive passion, why passion is important in your life, and most importantly, I think, how you can actually go about getting more passion in your life. In fact, and somewhat unexpectedly, there are ways that you can achieve that and strategies that actually really surprised me. Another thing that surprised me about this episode was what I learned about recovery. We've talked about recovery a lot on this podcast and especially in the Becoming SuperHuman MasterMind where Benjamin Hardy did a whole segment on it. Well, Brad and Steve gave me some really incredible ideas for how I can supercharge my own recovery periods so that I bounce back faster from long working or recording days. "Passion" is a word that's been thrown around a lot in the last few decades. People have a vague notion that passion is a very good thing, and that they want to find it in their work and lives. But beyond passion as a buzzword, its realities are actually very little discussed and seldomly well understood. My guests today have set out to correct this deficit in their new book: The Passion Paradox: A Guide to Going All In, Finding Success, and Discovering the Benefits of an Unbalanced Life. Their names are Brad Stulberg and Steve Magness, and I had them on the show last year to discuss their book Peak Performance. Today, we talk about the parts of passion that rarely get talked about: that it has both a positive and a negative side, how the advice to “find your passion” isn’t very useful, and the 3 things you need to really grow your passion. Still hammering out how to get my podcasts recorded while working full time and doing all the family things. This episode didn't turn out too bad as far as sound. I do apologize for a few background noises!  Also I'm trying out a new format and I think it's going to work well. Episodes that follow this format will include 1-3 parts that reflect on 1) Vocation Thoughts 2) Learning Something 3) Clinging to Scripture  I say 1-3 because sometimes I might do an entire episode on just one of those ideas. But generally I think this approach will help me get focused and streamline things a bit (if I'm capable of such a thing). This week... Vocation  What is TOO MUCH for one's schedule? I've been trying to get this new company launched while keeping our old company growing, while being a dad with my kids now in football, and my daughter in soccer, and then trying to be a good husband, and trying to do all of my church responsibilities. There're so many things that are happening right now, and I've been trying to live a balanced life and because of that, I basically had to cut out sleep almost completely from my schedule, which has caught up with me. It's been hurting, so I've been trying to get some more sleep, and so I'm trying to figure out, what do you do? They always talk about living a balanced life, and how do you do that as an entrepreneur, especially when you're trying to launch a new company, and trying to provide value to the world. How do you do it? I was thinking about a couple of things, and funny enough, by both of them coming from Mark Cuban, who, if you guys don't know who Mark Cuban is, you're probably living under a rock right now, but one thing he said that was really interesting, and I'm going to slaughter the quote, but he said something along the lines of – something about sleeping at night, like, “While my competitors sleep, and I'm staying up at night getting ready to kick his butt,” or something like that, and so that's been our mantra, because we've been going through this. We've got a couple of big competitors, some of them with VC money and everything that we're competing against. We're the ones busting our butts at night while they're sleeping soundly in their beds, and they're not going to know what came and hit them, so that's exciting. The other Mark Cuban thing was I was listening to, watching “Shark Tank”. This was a couple of months ago, but I remember this one scene, and it kept replaying through my head this weekend as I was trying to figure out how to become more balanced. He was talking about how, as an entrepreneur, when you're first getting started out, you can't lead a balanced life. He was talking about how things have to fall to the wayside, because there's so much effort and momentum that has to go into launching this thing. He was like, “Entrepreneurs do not get the privilege,” or whatever you want to call it, “the luxury of having a balanced life when they're getting started.” Someday, obviously, the goal of being an entrepreneur is to shift that, right? So all of this effort, you kind of frontloaded turns into this company that pays for itself, pays for you and your family so that you can go and live those things you want. It got me thinking about that. It's not good to always live your life unbalanced, but there are times when I think you have to, to be able to push forward and to succeed. I look at when I was wrestling in high school and college. My life was very unbalanced towards that, but that's what I had to do to be able to succeed. You've got to sacrifice other things to be able to do that. I look at the two years I spend on a mission for my church, and when I was doing that, life was very unbalanced. I was giving up everything else to be able to focus on that aspect and to be able to serve the world in that way, and so while I think that the goal is to get to a balanced life,  I think in order to get the momentum you need to succeed at almost anything, that initial inertia comes from being not in balance, and so you have to kind of pick and choose. Tonight, my wife and I sat down, and we started talking about what aspects I need to cut during this process to be able to function, so there's going to be some things in my life that I love that I'm going to have to cut out just so that I don't die [laughs] from lack of sleep and lack of everything, right? So one of the things I'm going to cut out is going to be weight-training. It's going to be this and that, and like, “What are the pieces I'm going to pull out so that I can focus on the good stuff which is obviously launching this company and having success with it and all of those types of things. Anyway, kind of fun – that's what's going down. I'm at the office now. Late night, I'm driving the Ferrari. Things are good. This is Russell Brunson, and I want to welcome you to a special late night “Marketing in Your Car.” Actually it should be called, “Marketing in Your Ferrari”, because right now, late at night, I’m driving to the office in the Ferrari. Hey, everyone. I want to welcome you to this webinar. This is not a webinar. This is a podcast. You can tell my brain’s a little bit fried right now. Over the last week or so, we’ve had Todd and Dylan and Chris and the entire Click Funnels crew flew in to Boise so we could focus on getting Click Funnels live and launched, and it’s been super fun. We’re halfway through the week, and we’ve got the other half coming up, and so I’m going in for another late-night session so that we can keep cranking this thing out so we can have it ready for you guys all to experience here soon, and I’m really excited. We’ve got some amazing changes. If any of you guys have used Click Funnels yet, you’re going to be blown away by the new editor and the new UI that we’re rolling it out on Thursday, and so we’re trying to hit a hard deadline and get it all done by Thursday, which will be pretty cool.
