I share that story in this episode. Compare your experiences at Walmart to the magical, emotion-filled experiences at Disney World. Disney delivers exceptional customer service and relationships that make all the difference. Strong relationships can create memorable experiences, which is crucial for achieving audience growth in podcasting. HAVE A CLEAR PLAN We also talk about the importance of having a plan and a clear objective for achieving audience growth. In this episode, I show you how shared experiences and emotional bonds can build a community. Following a structured, step-by-step approach, taught by my mentor Iman Aghay, led to significant and quick growth within my own business. It is critical to your audience growth success that you have a plan. According to available data, studies suggest that around 70% of businesses that survive for five years have a documented business plan. How does that apply to your growth. You don't necessarily need a formal MBA business plan. It just means a significant majority of successful businesses rely on a formal plan to achieve their objectives. DON'T GROW TOO SOON Executing a strategic plan can lead to audience growth. But, avoid premature growth, which can lead to failure if the product isn't ready for the market. 6 Mentors Who Have Shaped My Journey – PTC 500

As we celebrate 500 episodes of Podcast Talent Coach, I want to share with you six mentors who have shaped my journey over the past 10 years. LEARNING FROM MENTORS I learned long ago that I don't know everything and never will. Every experience is an opportunity to learn something. Conferences and conventions are always such a powerful experience for me. Many people say they rarely go to the session and instead have conversations in the halls. I can understand that. But, I think they are missing the power of the collective mind. Mingling in the halls during a conference will definitely grow your network. It has a place in your business. However if you skip all the sessions, you are missing ideas that could take your business to an entirely new level. We would attend the Country Radio Seminar every year in radio. I would travel with my music director for the station. During the day, we would take in all the sessions of the conferences. At night, we would split up to attend events and network with artists and record labels. From the sessions, we would learn new ideas to implement with the stations. At night, we would network with people who could help us implement those ideas. Then one day our company decided it wasn't necessary for both of us to be there. That single decision cut our learning in half and diminished the networking we were able to do. The company thought the conference was nothing but a party. It may have been for those who spent all of their time in the halls. When you're learning from mentors and expanding your thinking, things are possible beyond your imagination. These six mentors helped my achieve levels bigger than I every dreamed. It is my hope that these nuggets spur some new ideas for you as well. DAN MILLER The first is the mentor who has influenced my life the longest. Dan Miller's book and podcast "48 Days To The Work You Love" inspired me to follow my dream and start my own business. Dan is author of the New York Times best-selling 48 Days To The Work You Love and Wisdom Meets Passion, No More Dreaded Monday and An Understanding Heart. His 48 Days Podcast consistently ranks in the top 1% of all podcasts worldwide and his 48DaysEagles.com community is viewed as an example around the world for those seeking to find – or create – the work and the life they love. His podcast sits at the center of his multiple streams of income. Unfortunately, we lost Dan in January of this year after a very brief battle with cancer. Dan's attitude through that entire struggle was impressive and uplifting. He kept asking as he always did, "What does this make possible?" Dan saw the silver lining in every cloud. MARC MAWHINNEY The next mentor who has been a big influence on me over the past decade and 500 episodes was one of my very first coaches. Marc Mawhinney is a lifelong entrepreneur who helps coaches get more clients without paid advertising! He achieves this with his coaching programs, his podcast Natural Born Coaches, his Facebook group The Coaching Jungle, and his Secret Coach Club. Marc has been a speaker at events like Social Media Marketing World, frequently makes media appearances and contributes for Entrepreneur.com. He is a master at joint venture partnerships. I discovered Marc through his Coaching Jungle Facebook group and he soon became my coach. He taught me the power of sending a daily email. Our coaching sessions helped me refine my offers and get my business to the next level.  Marc appeared on episode 333 with me to discuss the power of joint venture partnerships. Not only did I participate in her giveaway, Cindy soon became my next coach and she's one of the best in the business. Cindy guides entrepreneurs and small business owners to thrive as you go up the ladder from being the best-kept secret to Trusted and In-Demand Authority. She has been coaching since 2009. Through our work together, Cindy taught me the power of visibility, how to use giveaways to grow my list, and ways to partner with others.  She is simply an all around great person. This one event changed my business more than I could ever have imagined. At the time, Collaborate was run by Iman Aghay and Rich German. Iman has been so influential in so many aspects of my business. Through this event, Iman taught me how to properly joint venture with others. He has taught me how to create my courses and events. More importantly, Iman showed my how to sell what I do. Iman Aghay is a serial entrepreneur, international speaker, and a nine-time #1 best-selling author. He is best known as the co-founder of Actionera, a platform that assists experts in building mobile apps to enhance their income and impact. Iman hasn't been on the podcast. In 2013 I was writing articles about podcasting for New Media Expo. Out of the blue, I got an email from Dave Jackson at the School of Podcasting. He was interested in having a conversation to see how we might support each other. During that conversation, Dave said he loved my articles. Then he asked why I didn't have a podcast of my own. Great question, Dave. If I'm writing about podcasting, shouldn't I have a show of my own. Shortly after that conversation, this show was born. And our friendship has continued over the years. Dave Jackson launched the School of Podcasting in 2005. He was inducted into the Podcasting Hall of Fame in 2018. He is the author of the book, Profit from Your Podcast: Proven Strategies to Turn Listeners into a Livelihood. Over the years he has launched over 30 different podcasts with over 4 million downloads. An Amazing Year – PTC 420

It was an amazing year for Podcast Talent Coach. And, I want to thank you for all of the support. It is my hope that this show and my content helped you reach a few of your goals. It is important that we take time to reflect on the great things in our lives. While I was traveling over the past week, I did just that. TAKE FOCUSED ACTION THIS YEAR What I realized is that focused action makes a big difference. In September, I began following a new coach. He put me on a journey to specifically follow up with those I've talked with over the year. I set out to serve these people and continue the conversation we began. I delivered content and resources that I felt could help each of them individually. There was no sell or ask. It was just service. Rather than approaching it with what I wanted, I went back and reviewed those original conversations. Then, I sent each of them something that would help with the challenge we discussed. Some of those led to additional calls. Others were just notes of thanks. Either way, it was focused action to help more coaches. Over this past year, I had 60 strategy calls with various coaches and podcasters. However, 25 of those calls have come in the last 8 week, because I was intentional. What I accomplished in the first 10 months of the year was nearly matched in the last 2. Those calls have also led to $10k in the bank and another $50k potentially coming right after the first of the year. That is what intentional action can do for your business. MY LATEST JOURNEY If you have been following me on the Podcast Talent Coach Facebook page, I've been keeping you up to date on my journey to earn $100K in 100 days. Each day, I share what I've learned, what I've tried, what has worked and what didn't happen as I had planned. It has been fun. We are a little over halfway through the journey. Many entrepreneurs take December off. They think people aren't doing business or making buying decisions around the holidays. This month has been huge for me. It has turned this year on its head. I have built new packages for clients. Opportunities to speak to a variety of groups have come my way. The way the tail end of the year has come together, I am excited to see what January will bring. WORKSHOPS IN THE NEW YEAR On January 7, I'm holding a free workshop called "How To Launch Your Podcast In 30 Days To Attract Your Ideal Clients." While serving in the 48 Days Eagles community, I conducted two Eagles Nests. Those are free mini-courses where I teach about podcasting for a group. I also lead one Dean Intensive. That is my favorite joint venture event. It was an absolute honor to be part of that. Over the year, I was involved in 15 different giveaways. I presented on 3 different summits or masterminds. My courses were included in 3 bundles. My email list grew by 2,222 over the year. I truly believe that growth was due to my intentional, focused action. A YEAR OF PODCAST GROWTH The podcast grew as well. This podcast was a solo show for the first 275 episodes. Slowly, I began to invite select guests to be interviewed on the podcast. The purpose of this show is to give you the help you need to grow your audience and fill your coaching program with your ideal clients. Over the past year, I interviewed 25 people for the show. The results show you like both the solo shows and the interviews. The top 11 episodes of the past year consist of 6 interviews and 5 solo episodes. Imagine how your podcast and business could grow if you could find 40 partners who would be willing to promote you to their fans. What would that do to your show? How would your client list grow? What would that do to your life. I'll tell you this … it changed my life. That little voice in your head is probably saying, "Who would want to promote me? I only have 4 people in my audience." Well, there are five different types of partners that would be interested in promoting you. Before I give you the five, let me tell you what powerful partnerships have done for me. CHANGED MY LIFE It was July 2020. I was invited to attend a joint venture event called Collaborate. When I hear "networking event", I get a little pit in my stomach. Meeting new people is not something I do in my spare time. Networking events are usually full of uncomfortable conversations of, "Hi, what do you do?" "Wanna dance" at a high school dance is less awkward. But, my friend told me this one was different. I should just give it a chance. So, I signed up and showed up to stretch myself a bit. Iman Aghay was the host of the event. To start, he explained what was going to happen and what we would get by the end of the event. Then, he taught us all exactly how to introduce ourselves during the networking circles. He showed us how to describe what do, what we need, and who would make a good partner for us. I couldn't believe it was going to be that easy. Then, I got into the circles, which are small groups of six or eight people. NETWORKING During the networking circles, your pitch is 2 minutes. No longer. That reduces a bit of the pressure. We can't talk too much. You also refine the pitch in each circle. Everybody in the circle is on the same page with regard to who talks, what they talk about and how long. There is no pressure. You don't need to awkwardly walk up to anyone to strike up a conversation. It is all right there is a small Zoom meeting with clear instructions. During the event, you will get feedback and hone your pitches in front of small groups and live coaches. This helps you ensure your message is on target. You will also learn valuable knowledge and proven practical tools from guest speakers during the event. But, this is just a small part of the 3 days. You spend most of the time networking with others in a way that is step-by-step for you. The event also include one-on-one coaching to help you find more collaborating partners to promote your podcast, products & programs. Like Zig Ziglar would always say, "You can get anything you want in life as long as you help enough other people get what they want." When you serve first, things will come back to you. Your podcast allows you a tremendous opportunity to serve others. You can serve people with your content. Guest can come on your show and be served by you as you get them exposure. Events and organizations can be served by your promotion. On the show today, I want to give you a variety of ways you can benefit when you serve. We'll also talk to Dan Miller, author of "48 Days To The Work And Life You Love". He has a great resource for you called "How To Talk, Serve And Put Money In The Bank". SERVE There are three people who really taught me how to serve through my business. The first influence in my business was Zig Ziglar. The more I listened to Zig encourage us to serve, the more I tried it. As I was getting better at serving, my business continued to grow. It is amazing what serving can do for your spirit. The second influence was Dave Ramsey from Ramsey Solutions, The Ramsey Show and Financial Peace University. Dave always encourages his listeners to find someone to help you with your money who has the heart of a teacher. That really hit home for me. Teachers have a special heart and desire to serve. They have such an impact on people by how they serve. As I went into my business, I wanted to come from that same place and serve well. SERVE BY NETWORKING During the Collaborate event, participants are put into networking circles of six or eight people. Each person has about 2 minutes to tell who they, who they serve and what sort of help they seek from their promotional partners. Now, most events would stop there. Throw people in a room and let them get at it. Instead, Iman teaches every person exactly how to use their two minutes. He gives you a template to tell people exactly how you serve so they will want to partner with you. But, it doesn't stop there. He also teaches participants how to have the follow up conversation after the event and serve even more. We so often go to events and meet a ton of people. After the event ends, we neglect to follow up and take action on the connections. No collaboration happens. Iman teaches participants to use their 2 minutes in the breakout rooms to simply get people to want to have a follow up call with you. On the follow up call, Iman says use the first 20 minutes of the call to see what the other person is all about and where they need support. Spend the next 20 minutes talking about you and where you need support. Finally, spend the last 20 minutes to find ways you can serve each other. When I talk with podcasters about their goals, they tell me they want to grow their audience. Today, I want to show you the exact steps you can use to double your audience. These are the exact steps I took last summer to double my downloads in four months. I also want to let you know that Collaborate is coming again. This is my favorite event of the year. UNCOMFORTABLE Before we get into the steps, you need to decide if you are really prepared to take the action necessary to grow your audience. Only you can decide if you will do the work. Everybody wants to lose weight. Few people are willing to do what it takes. The good news is growing your audience isn't as difficult as losing weight. It also won't take nearly as long. However, it will take discipline. It will also require you to get out of your comfort zone and try some things that may push your boundaries. Most of us consider ourselves introverts. We find it uncomfortable to engage in conversation with people we don't know. Putting ourselves out there in vulerable situations can sometimes paralyze us. On the other hand, when you do put yourself out there and meet new people who can help you, big things can happen. It is lonely at the top, because so few people are willing to do the work it takes to get there. The extra mile isn't very crowded. When you look at these steps, you will notice that they make you a bit uncomfortable. Do you want to be average, or are you ready to stand out from the crowd? MAKE IT EASIER You can make this process much easier. Having conversations with people who want to have those conversations makes this process much less awkward. If you want to double your audience, follow these four steps. First, create a real benefit of listening to your show. How will your listener be better off when the episode is over? They could be entertained, inspired, more knowledgable, or motivated. You get to decide. But, you need to decide. Your show cannot simply be information. Your listener can get that anywhere. Your podcast needs to take your audience through a transformation. To make your show powerful and engaging, stir the emotion and provide a benefit. Next, find your target audience. You can't hit a target you cannot see. Define your target listener. Then, figure out where they congregate. The third step is getting in front of them. Once you know where they are, go there. Be present. Make them aware of you. Finally, invite them to the show. Tell these new potential listeners how to find you. ACTION The process to double your downloads isn't difficult to understand. It is just challenging to do it on your own. You need to take action to achieve your goals. I was in your shoes. It was difficult for me to put myself out there. One year I attended a conference where I was speaking. People were actually coming to the room to hear what I had to say. You would think I had plenty of confidence. One night at the conference, there was a special networking event. I purchased a ticket to start networking. When I walked into the room, nobody noticed. As I made my way around the room, nobody noticed. Eventually, I joined a table of a few podcasters. We started chatting about our shows and got to know each other a bit. What I realized was these people were in the same position I was in. We were all there to meet new people. There was no reason for me to be uncomfortable. COLLABORATE Fast forward to last July. I attended an online event called Collaborate. This event was designed to help people meet potential partners. I reminded myself what I learned back at that conference. We were all there to meet potential partners. Iman Aghay was leading the event. He taught everyone there exactly how to network and what to say. It was great. He destroyed the self talk. We were all operating from the same playbook. From that event, I met 40 potential partners. Some would join me on my show. Others would have me on their events. Evakarin Wallin helps coaches go from start to empowered. She came on my show. Kelly Falardeau became a great parther. She helps entrepreneurs and coaches write their book. We've promoted each other. I met Margie Dunki-Jacobs. Margie helps entrepreneurs get to the next level. She has promoted me. She has been part of my coaching groups. We've found various ways to support each other. Merri-jo Hillaker is awesome. She helps business owners make a kryptonite breakthrough and reach success in their lives. She was a guest on my show and involved in various other Podcast Talent Coach things. Her story is great. Shelley Roxanne helps people go from overlooked to overbooked. We created a partnership after she was on my podcast. Patty Fogarty does website triage. Robin O'Donovan creates custom music. Shadeed Eleazer helps you monetize your network and is an amazing personality that everyone loves. The potential partners I met were incredible. And, I was taught exactly how to take action and meet all of these amazing people. I also met many others in a variety of niches. Alicia helps parents raise happy, healthy kids. Angela is all about essential oils and whole life health. Bonnie does online dance classes. Cheryl does healthy eating. Dr. Cheryl does neuropathy medicine. Gayle teaches you how to get on TV. James is all about chiropractic care. Kim does holistic animal care. Melissa teaches reinvention after divorce. Some of these experts didn't fit my niche. However, some knew others that would be a great connection for me. By connecting and collaborating will all of these amazing people, I doubled my downloads over the course of 4 months. Let's talk about leads and who you follow. I have found my greatest success when I pick one expert and follow that person until I've gone as far as possible. Chances are good that your followers are the same. Have you ever binged content? It happens all the time with podcasts. There will be those days when you see a bit spike in your downloads. This isn't a big influx of listeners. This is most likely one or two listeners getting all they can. Over the past four days, I drove 2,000 miles taking my daughter back to college. Dropping her off doesn't look like it is going to get any easier anytime soon. On our drive, we spent 12 hours consuming TEDx talks from an event put on by Sarah Lawrence. This is the customer journey, more often called the funnel these days. So, if you want more listeners, you need to get more leads. Don't let the term lead only represent clients. Leads could also become subscribers and grow your audience. You still need to find people who share your interest.
