The Cutting Edge Japan Business Show By Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan

At the start of our class on High Impact Presentations, we ask the participants to think about what type of impression they would like to have linger with their audience, after their presentation has been completed.  How about you? When people are filing out of the venue, what things would you like to hear about your presentation, if you were able to eavesdrop on their conversation?  Being clear is always a favourite and another high ranking popular desire is to be more inspiring. Now “inspiring” can be defined in many ways, but for the purposes of giving presentations, we can think of it as lifting people up, getting them to take action, to challenge new things, to push themselves harder than before.  Actually that is a pretty tall order in a forty minute talk.  Unless we are a professional motivational speaker, the majority of our talks will probably be focused on dispensing information and offering advice on how to solve business problems.  What would a business audience find inspiring?  It could be a tale of daring do, where great adversity had been overcome through the human will.  Conquering dangerous elements of nature, one's circumstances or fellow man, often come up in this regard.  The problem is business people's activities usually are far removed from conquering the poles, vertiginous mountain ascents or vast ocean  crossing exploits.  These are very specialist pursuits, which are out of our purview.  The arc of the story of rags to riches is a popular trope.  This works in business, because we are looking for hope in the face of tough odds.  When we hear that others made it despite all the trials and tribulations, we take it that maybe we can do it too.  It can be a personal story or it can the saga of a firm or a division and its imminent elimination, coming from back from the cusp of destruction to rise again and prosper.  We are magnets to lessons on survival.  We prefer to learn through the near death experience and ultimate triumph of others, than try it on ourselves.  You might be thinking your life is rather dull, your industry absolutely dull and your firm perpetually dull.  How could you liven up a talk with stories than were inspiring to others?  Maybe you can't.  Perhaps you have to draw lessons from other industries or personalities and weave these into the point you are making in your talk.  I like to read biographies and autobiographies for this reason.  I enjoy interviews with outstanding people, telling how they climbed the greasy pole and got to the top.  Strangely, obituaries are also a good source for this type of information.  They are usually brief summaries of a person's life. They often contain snippets of great hardship or success and frequently both.  Don't just skim over these heroic tales, instead collect these rich stories.  These can be your go to files for greatness, when you want to introduce an idea that needs some evidence.    There may be legendary figures in your industry or your firm.  These are stories you can retell for effect, to drive home the insights you want illuminate.  Okay it wasn't you, but the audience doesn't care that much.  They like to learn and they love hearing about disasters, so the train wreck doesn't have to be your personal catastrophe.  Usually the founders of your firm went through tough times. There are bound to be tales in there you can use.   Or you can draw on recent recessions, the Lehman Shock, the 2011 triple whammy of earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear power plant meltdown, the pandemic, to find episodes where all looked grim, but a legendary team battled on and survived, while many businesses around them disappeared.  You may have some personal experiences that are also relevant.  This can be quite hard, because you are sharing something quite personal with the world.  As an introvert, it took me a long time before I was comfortable to talk about my own experiences.  When I did though, the impact on the audience was immediate.  I could sense the feeling of closeness with strangers, as they listened to my tales of error, overreach, miscalculation etc.   I still have trouble with this, so I do prefer the woes of others to my own, but definitely my own stories are always so much more powerful.  I just need the temerity to tell more of them. So pepper your talk with uplifting examples from others or from your own experiences, that justify the action you want them to take or boost the feeling of confidence you want to instill in your audience.  The raw material is all around you.  Just start looking for it and begin compiling it.  When you hear something, you can use, capture it immediately for later employ.  Dig into the vaults of your own experiences and draw out examples that will make you magnetic for your audience.  Telling these types of stories is how speakers have inspired audiences down through the ages.  The reason we still do it today is because it works a charm.

Speak with Confidence Mike Acker pt 2 One of the best ways of helping other people is to share your wisdom, your knowledge and your experiences with them. That allows them, to basically, learn from your experiences and mistakes and move closer to reaching their goals faster, than trial and error and learning on their own. Podcasts is one way of doing that. Which is why I love interviewing Christian influencers and allowing them to share with you. Other than podcasting, public speaking - at events, meetings, conferences, etc., is truly beneficial. Usually, you will have a chance to meet the speaker and, well, overall – it is just a great way to learn and to network. Amen! But, for some people, the idea of standing up in front of a group of strangers and sharing details from your life is, well, let's just say “nerve wracking!” Some people would rather jump off a bridge than stand up in front of people and start talking, let alone teaching… If that sounds like you, I've got some good news for you today! Our guest today is Mike Acker. He is the son of drug dealers, turned NGO leaders (NGO means “Non-Governmental Organizations” that fight against the drug pandemic).  Today, Mike is a keynote and TEDx speaker, executive coach and the author of nine books, (that's right – NINE BOOKS)! including the best-selling “Speak with No Fear,” which spent three years as Amazon's top book on overcoming fear of speaking and was also listed in Forbes “7 Books That Will Help You Conquer the Fear Of Public Speaking.”  Known for his authenticity, humor, and engaging presence, Mike has over twenty years of experience as a speaking coach, leadership coach, and public speaker. He is also a former pastor and has worked with and supported several non-profits and relief organizations. His most recent book is “Speak with Confidence: Overcome Self-Doubt, Communicate Clearly and Inspire Your Audience.” Praise God! Today is part TWO of an amazing two part interview! At what point did you decide to get into public speaking? Let's talk about your recent book, “Speaking with Confidence.” Why did you write and publish book now, at this point in your career? Over the course of time, you developed a framework for Executive Presence and Speaking with Confidence. Can you share about this framework with our audience? How is it different from your other books and, for that matter, other books on this topic from other authors? I noticed in your book that you share with your readers how to “make a personal investment” in their topic they will be discussing to ensure success. Can you share a little bit about that? How do you get someone from, let's say, “suffering from stage fright” to delivering a successful presentation? Who should be purchasing this book and what will it do for them? Mike, this has been so interesting. I love how you were able to put, what can be a complicated subject, and just simplified it for your clients and your readers to help achieve success a lot faster than just “trial by fire,” that many do. How can someone obtain a copy of your book, “Speak with Confidence: Overcome Self-Doubt, Communicate Clearly...

Other than that brief information I just shared, can you tell us in your own words, “Who is Mike Acker?” You have to explain this part about, “son of drug dealers – turned into NGO leaders.”  I just want to start right there because that is not something you hear very often! I know Mazatlan is a tourist area now. Was it like that when you were growing up?  What was life like for you when you lived in Mexico? Were your bullied while growing up there? Your bio says that this gave you insight into what it was like to be an outsider and survived. I also read that you were lost – in the desert? We hear all of these State Department warnings and things like about tourists being kidnapped, murdered, robbed, etc. today. Was it that way when you were living down there? Let's shift gears a bit. You were a pastor for a time, correct?  Tell us a bit about yourself and your ministry in those days… How can someone obtain a copy of your book, “Speak with Confidence: Overcome Self-Doubt, Communicate Clearly and Inspire Your Audience?”  Is it on Amazon? If someone wanted to get in touch with you, perhaps to ask a question or look into your coaching programs or maybe to do an interview such as this, how can they do...

Susan Murphy's spent the majority of her 40-year career on-air. Starting as a shadow traffic reporter and programme director in Philadelphia she then moved to New York and became a radio personality before hosting and producing PBS television fundraising drives, crossing paths with our very own Charlotte Church. She once even rode an elephant through New York. She's been a voice-over artist for commercials, TV, websites and E-learning but her heart has always been in teaching and so having set up her company VOSOT (Voice Over Sound on Tape) she now 'polishes the on-air sound of anchors and reporters.' As a voice coach, myself, I of course loved this conversation. There is a lot of cross-over with what Susan and I do even though we work in different areas. A common element that occurs for both of us is a determination to help find our client's AUTHENTIC voice. So important when having to convey trust and authority. This week, Amanda speaks with Lisa Tahir, licensed social worker, healer, author, and podcaster. Lisa's new book, The Chiron Effect: Healing Our Core Wounds through Astrology, Empathy and Self-Forgiveness, approaches healing through the unique lens of Chiron, a complex and little understood astrological symbol. Her book is the first-ever written by a therapist to empower individuals and practitioners to identify twelve main areas of core wounding, which directly relate to the placement of Chiron in their birth chart.  Lisa talks about the significance of Chiron in one's healing journey, and how it can help us increase our awareness of repeating painful and unconscious behaviors. Through her methodology, we can understand our core wounds from a new perspective and break free from those painful cycles.  Lisa also brings up the importance of being kind to yourself, and calming that critical voice that tries to squander any attempt to heal core wounds. Self-compassion and forgiveness play a key role in her approach to healing, and can make all the difference in how we treat ourselves and how we treat others.  To purchase Lisa's book, schedule a session with her, or learn more about how Chiron relates to your life, visit nolatherapy.com. She's worked with people all over the world through video chat for over ten years, so she knows how to make the absolute most out of virtual therapy. This week, Amanda interviews Malika Williams, Founder and CEO of The Center for Women's Voice. Malika helps professional women communicate without apologizing or overanalyzing, and helps them speak with authority and be heard in male-dominated industries through practical tools and emotional support.    When she began her career as a professional actress, Malika had no idea she would start her own company one day. During her years working in the entertainment industry, she held day jobs at companies that advocated for women. One of her jobs was with a theater company that sent her to naval bases all over the world (including Guantanamo Bay), to present to soldiers and marines about systemic sexual violence in the military. When her boss at the company told her to rely on her male co-facilitator if she had trouble communicating to her predominantly male audience, Malika knew something wasn't right. She understood that her boss had good intentions, but she felt driven and inspired to create a culture in which women felt they could truly be heard in male-dominated rooms. She now uses her acting skills and experience to help women see what's possible, and effectively communicate to any audience.    Malika talks about how her father taught her to go after what she wants and not be afraid of healthy competition. She also discusses what confidence is, her views on conflict, how she works as a coach and also about her rewarding experience of being an entrepreneur.   To learn more about Malika's work, or book a session with her, you can find her on Facebook and LinkedIn, visit CenterforWomensVoice.com and follow her at @CenterforWomensVoice on Instagram. This week, Amanda interviews writer, coach, and entrepreneur, Lauren Marie Fleming. Lauren grew up on a farm, where she learned valuable lessons about living life with seasons of hard work and seasons of rest. When she decided she wanted to become a professional writer, she did the obvious thing and went...to law school. During that period, she started getting paid to write a sex blog about her sex life for a well-known publication. Before she knew it, she was a daring professional writer with a vast knowledge of the law. (Side note: her pen name was Queerie Bradshaw - love it!) Now, years into her writing career, and after many adventures on her path to deeply loving her body and self with no shame, she has opened her heart to aspiring writers. Lauren has created programs called Write Your Friggin Book Already and Path to Published, designed to help people take their ideas and turn them into a publishable book. She helps them feel empowered to write, understand the publishing process, and have access to a supportive community along the way.  Lauren digs deep into her inspiring life, tragedies in her family she has endured, and how she came out of a dark period thriving and more creative than ever. The statue captures the powerful moment when US Olympic Medalists Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised their fists during the medal ceremony of the 1968 Olympics. These San Jose State alums made history and sacrificed a great deal for that iconic moment. The inspiring statue was unveiled while Dimitrous was attending school there. For over 10-years, Dimitrous directed fundraising for legendary football icon, John Madden, with over five-million raised for philanthropy. Amanda speaks to Sherry Shine, a fiber artist, who specializes in hand-cut, stitched, fused, and hand-painted quilts. Sherry's use of vibrant color caught Amanda's eye immediately, which led to a powerful conversation about color, artistic process, social justice, and storytelling through art, and Sherry's amazing drive and passion. Sherry talks about the deep love of art she developed as a small child, which she held onto throughout her first career as an HR representative. Eventually, she was so motivated to create, she spent 15 hours a day on the weekends learning her craft and developing her unique style. By the time she finished her first quilt, a friend at work was so taken with it, she told Sherry she wanted to buy it. Sherry opens up about what inspires her and how she infuses meaning into her work. After the tragic murder of Trayvon Martin, Sherry created a piece called, "Will Justice Be Blind For Trayvon Martin?" which helped express some of the pain she experienced at the time. She also infuses history and meaning into other works, such as her series of quilts, "People in the Field" which depict symbols relating to the Underground Railroad. Since leaving HR and working as an artist full-time, Sherry's work has gone on to be exhibited around the country in galleries, colleges, and museums including Bank Street College, (New York, NY), Michigan State University Museum, The Bedford Brooklyn Public Library (Brooklyn, NY), Manhattan Community College (New York, NY) and The National Constitutional Center (Philadelphia, PA). Sherry’s work is also in several private collections including a few senators. Her creations can be purchased at the E&S Gallery in Louisville, KY. Sherry’s art quilts have also appeared in a number of books including Journey of Hope: Quilts inspired by President Barack Obama. Her quilt of Rosa Parks and President Obama on a bus graces the cover! She's even been invited to the Kentucky Derby a couple of times as a featured artist! She continues to pour herself and her passion into each piece she creates, and her story is an inspiration for anyone with a passion and a dream. To purchase one of Sherry's art-quilts, visit the E&S Gallery website. In this week's episode (recorded 5/30/20), Amanda speaks to Kristie Ferrantella, a woman who grew up in the small island community of Nantucket, Massachusetts. Kristie now serves on the Select Board, which is the governing body of the island and is also the President of the Nantucket Chamber of Commerce.   After high school, Kristie earned her undergraduate degree and her Master's Degree in Economics off-island, and worked in jobs in both Boston and Washington DC. Kristie then felt a pull to move back home. Driven by a desire to give back, she has dedicated her career and her free time to serving her island community.   Kristie shares about what gave her the confidence to run for office, what it was like to face the pandemic, and the work that goes into protecting and supporting thousands of people during a global health crisis. As of July 7th, Nantucket has seen just 27 Covid-19 cases since the start of the pandemic, and it's due to the leadership and commitment of those like Kristie.   Kristie also encourages those who visit Nantucket this summer to help keep those numbers low by wearing a mask and social distancing. (NOTE: on June 29th, the Board of Health voted unanimously to issue an emergency order, making it mandatory to wear a face-covering in all outside public areas, as well as inside restaurants and shops downtown. The ruling is in place regardless of social distancing. It also includes Sconset.)     And, Kristie shares about ACK Saves, a local movement to support residents in need. Tourism, hospitality, and construction (major industries on the island) were hard hit by the pandemic. While Nantucket has a reputation for being an upper-class community, Kristie explains that many year-round residents are working and middle-class families, many of whom have lost significant income during this time.    To learn more about the Nantucket Chamber of Commerce or get involved, visit NantucketChamber.org. Amanda interviews Life Coach, Executive Business Coach, and Founder of Life Purpose Advisor, Angie Swartz. Angie's mission is to empower people to find their life purpose and to make big shifts to live a meaningful, happy life via coaching and personal development classes. After a twenty-year, highly successful corporate career, focusing on business strategy, human relations, and communications, and working for five of the top companies in the world, Angie decided to make a change. She examined her work-life balance, had a daughter, and started on an unknown path. A CPA, who also holds her MBA, Angie has educated thousands at universities, conferences, webinars and private events, has been published in magazines and award-winning blogs, and has previously hosted three radio shows. Her work with clients reflect her firm principle, "If you can help others see themselves in the light that others see them, there will be little left to do."   Angie believes that we all know what our life purpose is, but can't recognize it until the time is right in our lives. Amanda and Angie dive into matters of finding purpose, taking risks, the dark night of the soul, and listening to our bodies. Angie expands on what it means that life is designed to get better, and encourages listeners to put in the work to gain clarity. She also discusses building confidence through taking risks and trusting in the unknown. And, when we listen to the answers our bodies tell us about what or who we need in our lives, everything becomes much easier. Life Purpose Advisor teaches a philosophy and program that states: We all already know our life purpose. We gain glimpses of our life purpose throughout our life from many of our life experiences, both good and bad. Our jobs are to accumulate that information into a recognizable form and to become clear enough to listen and hear what is already within us. Our purpose is already aligned with a higher calling. Once we discover it, we are here to promote more conscious societies and business environments. Whitney began her athletic career as a member of the Brown University rowing team. She made her way all the way to the Olympics in 2000. While she was very successful in her athletic endeavors, Whitney discusses the toll it took on her body and the pressures she felt to make weight and constantly be working towards the next goal. Her experiences as a therapist and now, as a coach, have allowed her to welcome a love and appreciation for herself and the present moment. She channels her skills, positivity, and self-assurance into her work and encourages her clients to reach similar heights of awareness and success.  For more on Whitney's coaching and services, visit http://www.lifealivecoaching.org/.  Here’s the scoop on Whitney’s major athletic milestones: Four-time member of the U.S. Women’s National Rowing Team 1995-2000 Member of the 2000 U.S. Olympic team, 2000 World Championships -- Gold, 1995. It's no surprise that even the most social and content savvy marketing leaders find it difficult to keep up with everything including creating compelling, relevant content that will inspire, delight, entertain and educate their audience. They have good intentions and know they need to provide value. However, finding the time is an entirely different story. As a result many overwhelmed marketers unfortunately resort to sloppy, irrelevant content that looks. smells and feels like everything their competitors are providing. It clearly lacks the unique factor and is often far from inspiring or valuable. These cookie cutter blog posts, podcasts, presentations, webinars, and even live stream videos all start to sound and read the same. It's like everyone is reading and writing from the same exact play book. They know they are starting to sound like a broken record. However, given the overwhelm they continue down the path of the status quo. It's almost a guarantee they wind up scratching their head thinking... Coming out of the information age it was easier to put most marketing tactics and strategies in a box. Brands with big budgets could simply throw big money at advertising agencies and the remainder at more predictable marketing mediums such as traditional media, direct mail and email marketing. However, times are changing drastically. Now it's practically a free for all. We are all the media. The world is noisy on and offline. It is more difficult than ever to stand out from the crowd, to rise above the noise and to earn trust and connect with hearts. We can communicate anyway we want. We can communicate how, when and where we want... and so can our audience. You do not own your audience. You do not own your social media communities on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat even if they are following you, like you or snap with you. Your audience is not there to serve you. You are there to serve your audience, period! Download Whitepaper 50 Tips to Inspire Your Audience: http://www.socialzoomfactor.com/inspireme
