This week, special guest Garrett Cash attempts to set a world record for the most preparation ever undertaken to appear as a guest on a single episode of a podcast. Meet Me in Las Vegas is a boring MGM film from 1956 set at the Sands casino in which Sinatra appears in a cameo as "Man at Slot Machine" for only a few seconds. You won't believe how far Garrett went to put this in its full context, spending over a year on the deepest dive yet undertaken for this show. Be prepared to learn a LOT about Las Vegas. He's the nicest bad guy in town. His last name is an adverb. And he's got some pretty wacky bits! Sweetie pie comedian Josh Gondelman joins us to talk about 1984's Johnny Dangerously, Amy Heckerling's loving homage to 1930's gangster pictures. Things we attempt to understand in this episode: the cultural legacy of Joe Piscopo; the actual joke that's being told in the “Your Testicles and You” animated reel / is there one?; Marilu Henner's insane memory thing; if the Danny DeVito bull scene is a parody of anything; why does Richie Rich have cent signs in his name if he's so rich?; and most crucially - why is this movie so damned hard to see in 2025?!?! Host: Jason Rigby Guest: Ashley M. Ryan (Pythian Priestess) Guest Bio: Ashley M. Ryan, known as Pythian Priestess, is an initiated priestess in a Hermetic Order dedicated to the Goddess Auset (Isis). With over half her life dedicated to studying and practicing magick and witchcraft, she rose to TikTok fame in 2019 and founded the Pythian Mystery School in 2020. Ashley is a spiritual leader, educator, and advocate for reclaiming the sacred feminine in its wholeness—light and shadow alike. Episode Overview: In this powerful and thought-provoking episode, Jason Rigby welcomes back Ashley M. Ryan, the Pythian Priestess, to discuss her evolving journey as a spiritual leader and the fierce, unapologetic nature of the divine feminine. Ashley shares her insights on sacred rage, the commodification of spirituality, and the importance of integrating the shadow self. Drawing from ancient archetypes like Black Isis, Kali, and the Black Madonna, she offers practical rituals and wisdom for women seeking wholeness in a world that often dilutes the sacred. The conversation explores themes of truth, resilience, and the balance of light and shadow, challenging the "love and light" narrative with a call to embrace the wild and transformative aspects of spirituality. Key Themes: 1. Sacred Rage and the Warrior Archetype Ashley steps into the "warrior archetype" as a woman, not to destroy, but to defend truth, the sacred, and the mysteries (01:40). She connects this to her astrological birth chart (Saturn and Mars in the sixth house), emphasizing service and discipline (01:40). 2. The Dilution of Spirituality Ashley expresses grief over the commodification of spirituality, watching it become a "branded ATM" rather than a transformative tool (02:35). She critiques spiritual bypassing and the avoidance of pain, especially post-LA fires (03:32). 3. The Dark Goddess and Wholeness Referencing Dancing in the Flames by Woodman and Dickinson, Ashley explains the absence of the dark goddess in modern society and its damaging effects (04:41). Archetypes like Kali, Black Isis, and the Black Madonna embody resilience, fierce love, and the integration of suffering (16:06, 20:00). 4. Thumos: The Spirited Fire of the Soul Ashley introduces the ancient Greek concept of Thumos—righteous anger that defends truth and honor—contrasting it with the "love and light" narrative (10:39). She ties this to Plato's chariot allegory and the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot's Chariot card, symbolizing balance between the soul's appetites and higher aspirations (14:05). 5. Embracing the Shadow Ashley emphasizes that the shadow is not an enemy but a part of wholeness, urging listeners to alchemize pain into wisdom (33:50, 35:15). She shares a personal story of a nightmare at 15, revealing unexpressed rage and the unconscious mind's role in healing (23:04). 6. Practical Rituals for Integration Ashley offers two rituals: mirror gazing with a candle to confront the soul (28:38) and scrying with a black bowl to uncover unhealed wounds (30:11). She stresses the importance of action post-ritual, such as therapy or inner child work (32:53). 7. Fear and the Occult Addressing fear around witchcraft and the occult, Ashley attributes it to societal conditioning and the rejection of feminine archetypes (42:16). She invokes Ma'at (balance and justice) as a source of boldness to face suffering and reclaim the sacred (40:42). Detailed Timestamps: 00:01 - Introduction: Jason welcomes Ashley back, noting her journey as Pythian Priestess and the success of her prior episode. 00:41 - Ashley's Current Calling: Ashley discusses stepping into the warrior archetype to defend truth and the sacred, inspired by her birth chart (Saturn and Mars in the sixth house). 02:35 - Sacred Rage and the Pythian Mystery School: Ashley reflects on the commodification of spirituality post-LA fires and her mission to restore its depth through the Pythian Mystery School and her podcast, The Occult Unveiled. 04:41 - The Dark Goddess: Introduction to Dancing in the Flames and the societal lack of the dark goddess, with Ashley advocating for women to "take up the sword" against patriarchal imbalance (05:25). 10:39 - Thumos and Truth: Ashley explains Thumos as righteous anger, linking it to Plato's chariot allegory and the tarot's Chariot card (14:05). She ties it to four virtues: wisdom, justice, courage, and temperance (12:00). 16:06 - Black Isis and Black Madonna: Ashley explores Black Isis as a symbol of suffering and resilience (17:13) and the Black Madonna as wisdom and realism (20:00), forged in chaos and fierce love. 22:08 - Teaching Wholeness at Pythian Mystery School: Ashley uses dreams and meditations to help students confront the unconscious and embrace the dark goddess (22:36). She shares a personal nightmare as an example (23:04). 28:38 - Practical Rituals: - Ritual 1: Mirror gazing with incense and a candle to see beyond the mask (28:38). - Ritual 2: Scrying with a black bowl and an invocation to uncover unhealed parts (30:11). 33:50 - Embracing the Shadow: Ashley reframes the shadow as a source of strength, not evil, and shares her hypnosis therapy experience to alchemize pain (37:07). 38:40 - Fostering Righteous Anger in the Mystery School: Through meditations, students meet archetypes and receive symbolic gifts (daggers, keys), fostering self-understanding (39:42). 42:16 - Overcoming Fear of the Occult: Ashley attributes fear to societal rejection of feminine archetypes and credits Ma'at for her boldness (40:42). 47:32 - Where to Find Ashley: Ashley shares links: pythianmysteryschool.com, Etsy (Pythian Priestess) for tarot readings, and YouTube for Pause with Pythian and free classes. Notable Quotes: Ashley on Sacred Rage: "There is a lot of rage right now in our society... It is a warrior for truth. It's a warrior for the sacred and to defend the mysteries." (01:40) On Spirituality's Dilution: "I'm watching it become an ATM for people. It's lost its meaning and it's a tool that should be used." (02:35) On the Dark Goddess: "Light is blinding. Light hurts. It's about breaking through illusion." (10:11) On Thumos: "It's the passion and the fire in my soul to bring back the sacred into the world." (14:05) On the Shadow: "You can turn the poison into medicine because the change in the integration is saying, ‘Okay, so this is the symptom.'” (37:07) Resources Mentioned: Book: Dancing in the Flames by Marion Woodman and Elinor Dickinson (available on Amazon, eBay, and Internet Archive). Pythian Mystery School: pythianmysteryschool.com Podcast: Pause with Pythian (on YouTube as Pythian Priestess). Tarot Readings: Etsy (search "Pythian Priestess"). Social Media: TikTok, Instagram, Blue Sky, YouTube (@PythianPriestess). Actionable Takeaways: Confront Your Soul: Try Ashley's mirror-gazing ritual with a candle and incense to see beyond your mask (28:38). Uncover the Unconscious: Use a scrying bowl with an invocation to reveal unhealed wounds, then act on the insights (30:11). Honor Your Shadow: Recognize rage, jealousy, or pain as parts of you needing compassion, not rejection (33:50). Embrace Fierce Love: Reflect on how suffering has forged your resilience, drawing inspiration from Black Isis or Kali (16:06). Join the Journey: Explore Ashley's free meditations on Pause with Pythian or enroll in the Pythian Mystery School (47:32). Closing Thoughts: This episode is a bold call to reclaim the sacred feminine in its entirety—fierce, wild, and whole. Ashley M. Ryan, as Pythian Priestess, challenges listeners to move beyond superficial spirituality and embrace the transformative power of the dark goddess. Whether through rituals, shadow work, or her teachings at the Pythian Mystery School, she offers a path to truth and resilience in a world craving balance.

Allardt studerade kommunistiska rörelser i Finland, särskilt "ödemarkskommunism" i glesbefolkade områden. EPISODE 84 - “THE MAKING OF MAGIC: BEHIND THE SCENES ON THE WIZARD OF OZ - PART 1” - 4/21/2025 Perhaps one of the most beloved movies of all time, the MGM classic The Wizard of Oz debuted in that magical year of 1939. Based on the popular children's books by Frank L. Baum, it tells the story of a Kansas farm girl, Dorothy Gale, who, along with her devoted dog Toto, is transported to the magical land of Oz. This beloved classic has become such a touchstone in pop culture that phrases like “There's no place like home,” “Toto, we're not in Kansas anymore,” and “I'll get you, my pretty” have entered our collective lexicon. This week, we offer the first of a two part episode that explores the making of this MGM classic film. Attorney, award winning blogger and AI expert Ralph Losey's curated and vetted podcast features his Anonymous Podcasters as they do a deep dive on Ralph's EDRM blog post, "Escaping Orwell's Memory Hole: Why Digital Truth Should Outlast Big Brother." The podcasters dig into Ralph's post on how digital systems can be erased of certain content, easier in some ways than Orwell's memory holing of printed material, and more difficult, since the Internet remembers everything. The Internet Archive and content replication on the net preserves, but may not be easy to find, especially with filtering firewalls. The discussion includes the psychological impact of information being difficult to find, or untrusted. The podcasters conclude with steps to strengthen our psychological resilience.

"The Message is built upon a popular urban legend which has circulated for years about what was recorded when Russian scientists drilled a nine mile hole into the ground in Siberia, lowered microphones into it and recorded what they heard. This legend is known as the Siberian Hell Sounds or Well to Hell. "Art Bell, an American broadcaster who hosted a show called Coast to Coast AM about the paranormal and other phenomena during the 1980's to the early 2000's, popularised this myth by replaying a tape many times on his show. This tape was the alleged recording captured by the Russian scientists - a cacophony of wild human-like screams. The recording is now in the public domain via the Internet Archive. "In the late 90s, a friend of mine in the United States, knowing that I was a collector of aural oddities, sent me a cassette tape he recorded of one of Art Bell's radio shows in which Bell introduces the so-called Siberian Hell Sounds recording to a talk back caller to the radio station. "In approaching The Message, I listened closely to the selected field recording of the Am Markt Hole of Bremen and researched available information about the history and background of this heritage site. The Am Markt Hole of Bremen, is marked by a manhole cover outside the Bremen Parliament in the market square. When a coin is dropped into it, various animal noises (The Bremen Town Musicians, based on a fairytale by the Brothers Grimm) are triggered and played back with the sound of the animals rising up out the hole. It sounds as though the animals; a cat, a dog, a rooster and a goat are trapped deep in the ground, distressed and trying to get out. "Thinking about this site, a hole in the ground and the character of the animal sounds within the original field recording, the legend of the Siberian Hell Sounds came to mind. Apart from the sounds of the animals, two other sounds from the field recording attracted my attention and were used in The Message; the metallic, machine-like sound of a coin dropping into the manhole slot and a short yet eerie scream or whistle from what sounds like a child or bird in the surrounding market square. "What you hear in the original Siberian Hell Sounds recording are only the human-like screams. There is no other aural context, before or after to the alleged sound recording provided. I wanted to extend this urban legend into a sonic narrative by imagining and providing some context around it. In The Message, the listener eavesdrops on an expedition of Russian-speaking men, talking and walking through the snow to the site of the hole. They start up heavy machinery to continue the digging, break through the rock and then lower a microphone down into the hole. When the microphone reaches its length, it picks up the sounds of horror, in this case the animals of the Am Markt Hole of Bremen and other voices/sounds buried deep below. "I incorporated a number of royalty-free sound samples to flesh out the sound narrative such as the sound of walking through snow, Russian voices, wind, heavy machinery, falling rocks, etc. To provide an extra twist, I imagined this recording being left on someone's answering machine to pick up later, anticipating their horror at what they had just listened to coming from the machine's speaker." On this episode of the Crazy Wisdom Podcast, host Stewart Alsop welcomes Jessica Talisman, a senior information architect deeply immersed in the worlds of taxonomy, ontology, and knowledge management. The conversation spans the evolution of libraries, the shifting nature of public and private access to knowledge, and the role of institutions like the Internet Archive in preserving digital history. They also explore the fragility of information in the digital age, the ongoing battle over access to knowledge, and how AI is shaping—and being shaped by—structured data and knowledge graphs. To connect with Jessica Talisman, you can reach her via LinkedIn. Check out this GPT we trained on the conversation!Timestamps00:05 – Libraries, Democracy, Public vs. Private Knowledge Jessica explains how libraries have historically shifted between public and private control, shaping access to knowledge and democracy.00:10 – Internet Archive, Cyberattacks, Digital Preservation Stewart describes visiting the Internet Archive post-cyberattack, sparking a discussion on threats to digital preservation and free information.00:15 – AI, Structured Data, Ontologies, NIH, PubMed Jessica breaks down how AI trains on structured data from sources like NIH and PubMed but often lacks alignment with authoritative knowledge.00:20 – Linked Data, Knowledge Graphs, Semantic Web, Tim Berners-Lee They explore how linked data enables machines to understand connections between knowledge, referencing the vision behind the semantic web.00:25 – Entity Management, Cataloging, Provenance, Authority Jessica explains how libraries are transitioning from cataloging books to managing entities, ensuring provenance and verifiable knowledge.00:30 – Digital Dark Ages, Knowledge Loss, Corporate Control Stewart compares today's deletion of digital content to historical knowledge loss, warning about the fragility of digital memory.00:35 – War on Truth, Book Bans, Algorithmic Bias, Censorship They discuss how knowledge suppression—from book bans to algorithmic censorship—threatens free access to information.00:40 – AI, Search Engines, Metadata, Schema.org, RDF Jessica highlights how AI and search engines depend on structured metadata but often fail to prioritize authoritative sources.00:45 – Power Over Knowledge, Open vs. Closed Systems, AI Ethics They debate the battle between corporations, governments, and open-source efforts to control how knowledge is structured and accessed.00:50 – Librarians, AI Misinformation, Knowledge Organization Jessica emphasizes that librarians and structured knowledge systems are essential in combating misinformation in AI.00:55 – Future of Digital Memory, AI, Ethics, Information Access They reflect on whether AI and linked data will expand knowledge access or accelerate digital decay and misinformation.Key InsightsThe Evolution of Libraries Reflects Power Struggles Over Knowledge: Libraries have historically oscillated between being public and private institutions, reflecting broader societal shifts in who controls access to knowledge. Jessica Talisman highlights how figures like Andrew Carnegie helped establish the modern public library system, reinforcing libraries as democratic spaces where information is accessible to all. However, she also notes that as knowledge becomes digitized, new battles emerge over who owns and controls digital information. The Internet Archive Faces Systematic Attacks on Knowledge: Stewart Alsop shares his firsthand experience visiting the Internet Archive just after it had suffered a major cyberattack. This incident is part of a larger trend in which libraries and knowledge repositories worldwide, including those in Canada, have been targeted. The conversation raises concerns that these attacks are not random but part of a broader, well-funded effort to undermine access to information.AI and Knowledge Graphs Are Deeply Intertwined: AI systems, particularly large language models (LLMs), rely on structured data sources such as knowledge graphs, ontologies, and linked data. Talisman explains how institutions like the NIH and PubMed provide openly available, structured knowledge that AI systems train on. Yet, she points out a critical gap—AI often lacks alignment with real-world, authoritative sources, which leads to inaccuracies in machine-generated knowledge.Libraries Are Moving From Cataloging to Entity Management: Traditional library systems were built around cataloging books and documents, but modern libraries are transitioning toward entity management, which organizes knowledge in a way that allows for more dynamic connections. Linked data and knowledge graphs enable this shift, making it easier to navigate vast repositories of information while maintaining provenance and authority. The War on Truth and Information Is Accelerating: The episode touches on the increasing threats to truth and reliable information, from book bans to algorithmic suppression of knowledge. Talisman underscores the crucial role librarians play in preserving access to primary sources and maintaining records of historical truth. As AI becomes more prominent in knowledge dissemination, the need for robust, verifiable sources becomes even more urgent.Linked Data is the Foundation of Digital Knowledge: The conversation explores how linked data protocols, such as those championed by Tim Berners-Lee, allow machines and AI to interpret and connect information across the web. Talisman explains that institutions like NIH publish their taxonomies in RDF format, making them accessible as structured, authoritative sources. However, many organizations fail to leverage this interconnected data, leading to inefficiencies in knowledge management.Preserving Digital Memory is a Civilization-Defining Challenge: In the digital age, the loss of information is more severe than ever. Alsop compares the current state of digital impermanence to the Dark Ages, where crucial knowledge risks disappearing due to corporate decisions, cyberattacks, and lack of preservation infrastructure. Talisman agrees, emphasizing that digital archives like the Internet Archive, WorldCat, and Wikimedia are foundational to maintaining a collective human memory.

What is the purpose of libraries in the era of the internet and AI? Whether at a school or in a community, libraries used to be key providers of information and enjoyment for many. But now, in a digital age, more books and periodicals are available online than even the biggest library can hold. If terabytes of text can now be stored on a single laptop, do we need to think differently about the way we access and navigate books? Could well-designed AI tools be trusted to make sense of this information abundance in a similar way that a good librarian can?Rajan Datar discusses the past, present and future of libraries with Randa Chidiac, Director of Library Services at the American University in Dubai; Dr. Andrew Hui, Head of Literature Studies at Yale-NUS College in Singapore; and Brewster Kahle, computer engineer and digital librarian, founder of the Internet Archive and Wayback Machine. We also hear from World Service listeners.(Photo: An artist's impression of a digital book. Credit: Alengo/Getty Images)

CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of racism, sexual assault, false imprisonment. 1962 contained not one but two books that were thrust upon us as required school reading (or acting), but none loom as large as this story. To be fair, it's one of the few stories about the pre-Civil Rights Act South that's presented through the eyes of a child, and that means it's perfect school fodder. The movie was a huge labor of love from the entire creative team, which is fantastic and reads on screen, but also makes for a truly uneven watching experience. Director Robert Mulligan gets the most out of the cast, but his execution of trying to see things through Jem & Scout's perspective never translates on screen. In fact, the only moments that truly work are in the courtroom, when the reality of small town Alabama racism come roaring back. It's a shame it's not a better movie because Gregory Peck is giving his masterpiece performance and the kids are phenomenal on screen, but acting alone cannot a movie make. For our very special 600th episode, we talk about the most video game-shaped thing you could get that wasn't a video game: the Tiger Handheld Electronics game. These heavily licensed consolation prizes were barely interactive, made heinous noises, and were ubiquitous in the early nineties. You can play many of them on the Internet Archive, but why would you?

In this episode of Litigation Nation, co-hosts Danessa Watkins and Jack Sanker dive into a significant ruling from the U.S. Second Circuit that could drastically impact how local libraries lend electronic books. The discussion centers around a lawsuit involving the Internet Archive and major publishers like Hatchett, HarperCollins, and Penguin Random House, which has raised critical questions about copyright infringement and the future of digital lending in libraries. We explore the traditional model of library lending, where physical books can be borrowed freely, compared to the restrictive and costly nature of digital lending. Libraries often face high fees for e-books, which are time-limited and loan-limited, making it increasingly difficult to provide access to digital materials. The Internet Archive's approach of controlled digital lending—where a physical book is scanned and lent out digitally while the physical copy is sequestered—was challenged in court, leading to a permanent injunction against this practice. The hosts discuss the implications of the court's ruling, which rejected the Internet Archive's argument for fair use, stating that digitizing books did not transform them in a way that would qualify for this legal exemption. This decision could lead to increased costs for libraries, forcing them to repeatedly purchase e-books rather than lending them freely, ultimately affecting their ability to serve the community.Throughout the episode, we highlight the broader issues facing libraries today, including funding shortfalls and the rising costs of digital materials, which could diminish their role in providing accessible knowledge. We encourage listeners to support their local libraries and reflect on the importance of these institutions in our communities.Join us as we unpack this complex legal landscape and its potential consequences for libraries and their patrons.

We're coming to you with a special offering today. It's an episode about the internet… from our friends just a few cubicles over here at WBUR: On Point. Hosted by Meghna Chakrabarti, On Point is a unique, curiosity-driven combination of original reporting, newsmaker interviews, first-person stories, and in-depth analysis, making the world more intelligible and humane. When the world is more complicated than ever, we aim to make sense of it together. We loved their recent episode about one of our favorite pieces of how the internet gets recorded and remembered — and we thought you might love it too. So kick back and take a listen. We'll bring you the usual shenanigans next week. More than 900 billion webpages are preserved on The Wayback Machine, a history of humanity online. Now, copyright lawsuits could wipe it out. Guests Brewster Kahle, founder and director of the Internet Archive. Digital librarian and computer engineer. James Grimmelmann, professor of digital and information law at Cornell Tech and Cornell Law School. Studies how laws regulating software affect freedom, wealth, and power.
We've got OMG royalty here! Zahkia Mendoza is in the contestant seat to see if she can make the connections and return again next week. Here are today's clues: 1. nickname for Venice or Pittsburgh, a problem for Königsberg?, title structures for Meryl Streep, Dude. 2. first of three in a two-person game, classic, ice, bottom. 3. movie millionaire, 80s role for a small Frye, video game barista, Internet Archive founder. 4. 90s denim, DERV in the UK, inventor Rudolf, Shaq behind the decks.
CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of alcoholism, child neglect, substance abuse, addiction. Every year at the Oscars there's a movie that stands out as the film that should be the Best Picture, just for the sheer raw power of its storytelling. This is that movie. Jack Lemmon is giving a performance for the ages, the supporting cast is rock solid, and the always contrarian Blake Edwards goes for broke. This could have easily been a melodrama, but you get the sense very quickly that everyone making this movie got the impact of what they were doing here. And that's incredible, considering there's movies that come out in 2025 that can't capture the truth of addiction like this movie. TCW Podcast Episode 228 - PopCap Games PopCap Games was initially overlooked by the larger gaming industry due to its focus on fun, well-designed, and polished casual games. Their first major hit, Bejeweled, became a consistent source of income, allowing PopCap to invest time in developing new titles. This led to the creation of Peggle, which helped solidify PopCap's reputation, particularly after developers at Valve became hooked on the game's deeper skill-based mechanics and puzzles. The success of Bejeweled and Peggle continued with their ports to the iPod and, eventually, the iPad, further expanding PopCap's popularity. This growth culminated in the release of Plants vs. Zombies, which debuted on PC before being adapted for iOS. The game's seamless touchscreen integration made it a standout app for the newly launched iPad. As the gaming industry evolved, PopCap struck a deal with EA, which acquired the company, leading to the departure of its founders over the following years.
