1957 came hard for us with the ever-menacing presence of…Andy Griffith? This one is a real underrated gem, a heady brew of media stardom, political power and ego that makes an aimless narcissistic drifter into a king drunk on his sway. Everyone is fantastic in this movie and it has absolutely zero hardware to show for it - a fact that would be utterly shocking if not for the notes we get into with the trivia. Get yourself hyped up with a couple of Vitajex as we discuss A Face in the Crowd on Have a Good Movie! We're coming in this week like a flying saucer into Earth's atmosphere with a movie that's both way ahead of its time and also incredibly dated. Flying saucer movies could be a dime a dozen in the atomic age, but only a few managed to capture the public's imagination like this week's movie. This is the template for a lot of sci-fi to come, even though it suffers from some haphazard execution and some frankly terrible acting. Make sure you're on Gort's good side and don't get vaporized as we discuss The Day the Earth Stood Still on Have a Good Movie! Macintosh & Maud Haven't Seen What?!

We've got a new series to talk through movies that were snubbed for or didn't win major Oscars as we lead into awards season! We start off with a living Looney Tunes cartoon, which makes sense given that Looney Tunes based itself off these movies. The Marx Brothers were already comedy legends when this film came along, but director Leo Carey brings a dash of satire that makes for an incredible film, all wrapped up in under 70 minutes of run time. This isn't just a comedy, it's a masterpiece, and we're catching up on it today. Hail, hail Freedonia as we watch Duck Soup on Have a Good Movie! Next up in the Oscar Snubs is the paragon of fast-talking screwball comedies. Except that this movie might be too fast. That's right, when you tell five jokes in 30 seconds, and they're all dated back to the late 30's, at some point you're no longer funny, you're exhausting. It's impeccably executed, but utterly meaningless, and by the end you're just happy to turn the movie off. Lock up your rollaway desks as we discuss His Girl Friday on Have a Good Movie! Message To effectively communicate an event it's important to convey the answers to Who? , What? , When? , Where? , and Why? The Five Ws is a checklist used in journalism to ensure that the lead contains all the essential points of a story. As far back as 1913, reporters were taught that the lead should answer these questions about the situation being reported. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_Ws What?, When?, Where? The first sentence is always This is Hacker Public Radio episode (show id) for “(day of week)” the “(day number)” of “(month and year). Saying the name of the show at the beginning of an episode is called establishing brand recognition . It is standard for podcasts, TV and Radio shows as well as on broadcast networks, not to mention the pre-rolls in a movie. We started to do it because some of our Visually Impaired users appreciated knowing what show is playing. Now the same reason can be applied to everyone as the use of visual controlled User interfaces have diminished. Most people control the playlist with headset or voice controls. Saying the show id, and date is common where there are a lot of episodes eg: news or weather shows. It is often skipped where the content is sufficient to identify the episode, eg “the last episode of the foo bar baz podcast, or the last Saturday Night Live” We include the show id and date to allow the listener to refer to the episode easily. As we have literally thousands of shows, we need to help people identify which show they are now listening to, so that it can be easily shared, or commented on. What? Why? We always include Today's show is entitled. (title) . If the episode is part of a series then we also include It is part of the series (series name) . We always include the show (synopsis) . This tells the listener what the show is about. It allows them to skip the episode if they wish. They may wish to do this for many reasons, for example: because they are not interested in the topic, they wish to listen to it while in front of a computer to reference the accompanying show notes, they are listening in public and the topic might not be appropriate. Who? The next part will either be It is the first show by new host (host name) , It is the (multiple of 10)th show of (host name) , or It is hosted by (host name) We are required by the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0) license to credit our hosts, so we do. We think it's important to highlight new hosts especially, so our community we encourage them to continue to contribute. It's also nice to call out hosts who have been contributing a lot by highlighting each 10th show they send in. Where? We always include and is about (minutes)minutes long to give people an idea of how long the show is. Normal broadcasts have to fit neatly into a standard TV/Radio Broadcast schedule. Many podcasters now follow the same tradition of having episodes of a predictable length. Eg: 30 minutes or an hour. On HPR, there is no restriction on how long the show can be so it's desirable to give the listener a way to know how long the episode is so they can plan accordingly. Warning We always include either It carries a clean flag or It carries an explicit flag . This is also common for broadcasts where they are dealing with a topic that may be disturbing to some people. What We always include The summary is. (summary) . As this also tells the listener what the show is about. License In the event that the show is not released CC-BY-SA we include Todays show is licensed under a (license_long_name) license. Harrisons dramatiska historia

This series on Terrorism is wrapping up with the problem of state sponsored terrorism. This form of international terrorism is most clearly a method of warfare, with the state using terrorist organizations as deniable proxies in armed conflict. International law, however, does not recognize that form of terrorism as war, but as criminal acts subject only criminal jurisprudence. This situation does little to stop this war form or to protect those who should be protected under the laws and customs of war.   The information in these podcasts is solely my own opinion and do not represent the position of the U.S. Department of Defense, or any other organization I am or have ever been associated with.

Omslag: Kung Christian X dagliga ridtur utan livvakt i Köpenhamn under andra världskriget stärkte danskarnas nationella sammanhållning. Wait, what? Is it time for the podcast again? Seems like only yesterday that Dan joined Elliot for the weekly rundown of the choicest hacks for the last 1/52 of a year. but here we are. We had quite a bit of news to talk about, including the winners of the Component Abuse Challenge -- warning, some components were actually abused for this challenge. They're also a trillion pages deep over at the Internet Archive, a milestone that seems worth celebrating. As for projects, both of us kicked things off with "Right to repair"-adjacent topics, first with a washing machine that gave up its secrets with IR and then with a car that refused to let its owner fix the brakes. We heated things up with a microwave foundry capable of melting cast iron -- watch your toes! -- and looked at a tiny ESP32 dev board with ludicrously small components.  We saw surveyors go to war, watched a Lego sorting machine go through its paces, and learned about radar by spinning up a sonar set from first principles. Finally, we wrapped things up with another Al Williams signature "Can't Miss Articles" section, with his deep dive into the fun hackers can have with the now-deprecated US penny, and his nostalgic look at pneumatic tube systems.
