National Coding Week 2020 – A view from the experts

Recent research reveals that the UK tech sector has grown nearly six times as fast as the UK economy over the past decade, suggesting digital skills have never been more in demand. Each year, National Coding Week (14th -20th September) aims to boost employees’ existing digital skills and equip more people with the tools to work in tech. While this year is a little different as there will be no physical events as part of the week, the sentiment remains – coding shapes the world we live in, and therefore, encouraging and sustaining a pipeline of diverse talent into the industry is vital. We talked to some of the industry’s leading experts and got them to share their thoughts: Coding continues to disrupt our lives, work and leisure Robbie Clutton, Senior Director, VMware Pivotal Labs comments: “It seems like software and coding has been on the front pages of the press more this year than ever before, showing that being able to code has never been more important. Whether it’s Covid-19 tracing applications, algorithms for determining exam results, or the increase in digital businesses such as online grocery shopping. Combined with the “new normal” of remote working, the use not just of coding, but digital tooling, is becoming foundational to the way we conduct business today.” Sean Farrington, SVP of EMEA for Pluralsight argues that with the right skills investment, we’re ready to make the next leap forward: “Technology is pervasive and we are now in the midst of a coding revolution. As we take our relationship with technology to the next level, businesses stand to reap the benefits – but only if they invest in their team’s technology skill development. Developing digital skills is an ongoing process, and the skills developed at school, university, or past jobs need upgrading to meet the demands of the modern organisation. Development frameworks evolve and skills have to be kept fresh. Pushing a culture of learning in the realm of coding now will undoubtedly cement some certainty for the future.” Kara Sprague, Executive Vice President and General Manager, BIG-IP at F5, agrees: “The influence of coding continues to disrupt and transform all industries. For example, look at what businesses like Uber and Lyft have done in the transportation space. Or what Airbnb has done in the hospitality sector. Or Amazon in retail. Technology wields an enormous influence these days, bringing disruption and profound change. That’s why it’s so important for young people to not only gain an appreciation for that impact, but also build a capability to participate in it.” Encouraging the next wave of coders Steve Thorn, Executive Director, Digital, Civica highlights why coding offers a great career option: “Coders are highly valuable in the workplace and the talent pool is still relatively small. It’ll be an attractive job opportunity for graduates and apprentices entering a difficult job market and open to a diverse range of people across genders, race and neuro-diversity. Coding is also a great opportunity for current employees looking to upskill into a future career.” Kara Sprague points out that we’re seeing progress in teaching people coding from a young age: “From a big picture awareness-raising and enablement perspective, I am encouraged by how some countries have adopted requirements in their core curriculums for kids to learn coding. This bodes well for their technology sectors and job-creation abilities moving forward. For the future, it’s vital that the big focus is on building and nurturing a diverse pipeline of talent that can build and excel within technology organisations. Coding and technology are now so important to the global economy – and life in general – that everyone should have an opportunity to participate.” Challenge stereotypes and backgrounds to champion diversity in coding Jonathan Crane, Chief Commercial Officer, IPsoft believes businesses need to recognise the value of individuals from non-STEM ...

This podcast interview focuses on product innovation that has the power to achieve 9+ satisfaction rating with any of your customers. My guest is Roland Hallebeek, CEO of Scotty Technologies.Roland has been in communication all his life. He was the vice president of Telecom and Media at Capgemini (2001-2011), headed up various data driven start-up initiatives between 2013 and 2016, led European AI Customer Engagement Management at IPsoft (2017), and ran the Global Digital & Cognitive AI centre at EPAM systems (2018). In 2018 he founded both Cognitive affairs and Scotty Technologies two companies centered around the same mission to take Customer Contact Automation to the next level by making it simpler, smoother, more scalable, highly predictable from a cost perspective, and most of all – more human. This triggered me, hence I invited Roland to be a guest on my podcast. We explore what’s broken in the world of Digital Transformation, why many companies focus on solving the wrong problem, and what could be an alternative way to approach it in order to get far better results for both the customer as well as the business. We also explore Rolands’s approach to building a remarkable software business. Here are some of his quotes:“People are talking about digital transformation, customer journeys, customer experiences. All big words, big projects and initiatives, but very often not very clearly defined in so what does it do for your customers or how do your customers behave? We saw many initiatives where people were focusing on chatbots, so automating chats. What we also saw is that a lot of the voice so people calling was being outsourced to low cost countries or to overflow parties. So basically, moving away from your core processes in your company. But if you look at the numbers in Western Europe, your see that less than 5% of all customer contacts is actually chat, and voice is actually way over 50%. So, way over 50% you outsource, you giveaway to other parties to handle it for you, and all those efforts on chats is basically solving less than 5% of the complexity and volume….”During this interview, you will learn three things:Why it’s critical to take a big picture view and challenge yourself whether the problem you solve with your software business is the most valuable problem, and not just an interesting problem. Why very often you get exponentially better results if you aim for a symbioses of humans and 60-80% automation, rather than plane 100% automation. That remarkable things happen when you start off with a clear vision, hire a team of linchpins – people that can deliver 10x – and then organize around a framework focused on value and defensible differentiation. When Jerry Levine became general counsel of IPsoft in December 2015, the artificial intelligence company had been in business since 1998, but it had never had an inhouse lawyer. That meant Levine had the daunting task of creating a legal department from scratch, within an established company that had customers worldwide.  More than four years later, Levine has built an international team of inhouse legal professionals, implemented governance standards, put in place compliance policies, set up processes for contract management and legal operations, and much more.  He is also a tech- and business-savvy lawyer who has relied heavily on technology to help build the department and accomplish its goals.  In a special episode of LawNext recorded live during Legalweek 2020 in New York City, host Bob Ambrogi sat down with Levine to talk about the challenges of building a legal department and the role technology played -- and continues to play -- in helping him meet those challenges.  Special thanks to Valerie Chan, founder of Plat4orm PR, for her assiduous assistance in organizing this panel. In this episode of the ISG Smartalks™ podcast, we look back at ISG’s Automation Summit London (11-12 September). Barry Matthews catches up with four leading automation experts at the conference to find out their thoughts on the current state of technology and how they see automation impacting business over the next decade. Barry speaks with Professor Leslie Willcocks of the London School of Economics, who has co-authored 65 books on automation. Willcocks believes we’ll see exponential growth in artificial intelligence (AI) and robotic process automation (RPA) businesses, leading to mergers and consolidations in the sector. He dismisses the idea that RPA will merely patch up the old world of business tech and instead sees it as foundational for a new way of doing business, allowing enterprises that focus on technological convergence to separate themselves from their competitors. Next, Barry finds Craig Jones, Partner – Advisor Relations, of Wipro with whom he explores how RPA has become more strategic and transformative. Jones predicts we will see more businesses move to cognitive AI in the next ten years, believing it will lead to huge efficiencies, but only if businesses have the right data and the right structure in place. When Barry sits down with Sajesh Gopinath, General Manager, of UST Global they discuss how businesses are evolving in their relationships with automation – moving from proofs of concept to demanding clear results on what the technology can deliver. Gopinath believes those enterprises that have automated systems to orchestrate processes and information across the enterprise will become market leaders. Finally, Barry tracks down Serkan Ibrahim, Sales Director, of IPSoft who predicts a convergence of capabilities and vendors in the automation market over the next ten years. Despite some disappointment in RPA, Ibrahim still sees it as the best gateway to digital transformation – and believes we’re only just starting to see its true capabilities. Tune in to hear an honest conversation with four of the field’s experts about automation, cryptocurrencies and the power of change in the market today.

Chetan Dube is the CEO at IPsoft, an American multinational technology company which primarily focuses on Artificial Intelligence. IPsoft has just over 2,000 employees in 15 countries.  When you think of AI you might remember an experience you’ve had with a chatbot when trying to contact a company in order to ask a question, make a return, or purchase an item. Most of our experiences with chatbots are extremely frustrating and commonly end with us screaming “agent” into the phone. But IPsoft is working on solving this problem.  Chetan says the problem is the average IQ of the chatbots and virtual assistants is around that of a 5 or 6 year old human. How can you expect great customer service from a five year old? You can’t. So what IPsoft is doing is studying the human brain and finding ways to mimic the human hippocampus, ways to make chatbots and virtual assistants more flexible and able to read a customer’s mood.  So where are we now in the grand scheme of things being able to recreate human intelligence in AI? Chetan says, “It's not a discussion if true artificial intelligence will start to rival human intellect. The only thing that is of discussion nowadays is when. Is it going to be in, as you mentioned, the Curtswell, the singularity and you feel that, is it going to be in 2030-35, is it going to be as we maintain by 2025, you will pass someone in the hallway and you won't be able to tell if it's a human or an android. I think that's the real difference is that just the time horizon. If it's going to be in the next six years, if it's going to be in the next 11 years. It's inevitable at this point that you will get to the point where these agents start to mimic human intellect.” With all of that said, Chetan still believes that AI will never be able to truly master human creativity. This is a skill that is unique to humans. Machines and Technology can complete tasks, find answers in their databases, use algorithms to solve math problems, but Chetan believes they won’t be able to cure cancer, create life, find a way to colonize Mars, etc…Humans will always have a role no matter how many jobs AI can take over, because of human creativity.  The fact is advances in AI and technology are coming, it is not a question of if, but when and how fast. So what is Chetan’s advice for how to prepare for what’s to come? He says, “Dust the rust off your brain and focus on creativity and coming up with things that are ... Do not play the machines on their playing field, you will lose. Do not play on mundane, ordinary chores and say I'm going to be the Luddite or neo-Luddite and try and stop the machines from driving cars or flying planes or driving trucks. They're going to. They're going to. That's what they do. They are just more effective at that. Humans are more effective at, and will continue to be, creativity.”  What you will learn in this episode:  How Chetan defines AI What kind of AI IPsoft is designing and building Where we are in the grand scheme of things of being able to recreate human intelligence Is the world of AI over hyped? Whether or not we should be worried about AI How we can embrace AI and what’s coming Who or what Amelia is

In a world where AI is increasingly stitched into the very fabric of our society and we start to rely on it for complex decisions including those which have potentially life or death ramifications, shouldn't there be a common understanding of the rationale behind AI reaching a final decision? This week, the Pardon The Disruption podcast team welcomes Gus Bekdash, Senior Managing Director of AI Solutions at IPsoft (www.ipsoft.com) & Vanessa Bates-Ramirez, Senior Editor at Singularity University (https://singularityhub.com/author/vbatesramirez/#sm.0001676oghr96fqjq9a1ha6301jy1) While it may be clear to understand why we need to explain AI, how we get there is far less clearer. There are a couple of dimensions to understand; (i) What is the goal set being programmed into the platforms and (ii) Once it has those optimization parameters how does it reach the final decision? But while skeptics tend to blame the developers of the technology for not clearly defining the goal sets being programmed, Gus believes the importance of getting these decisions right requires more people to have a seat at the table. Vanessa recently attended SXSW in 2019 where Explainable AI was a hot topic. At the event, she surfaced two schools of thoughts developing as it relates to Explainable AI. On one hand, there are people who believe that these AI systems should be explainable and no further progress should be made until we do this. Conversely, waiting for perfection will waste time and potential gains AI could yield. What do you think? Do you think countries in the West will hit the brakes on AI-related progress because of the complexity of understanding AI's rationale whilst countries further East slam down the accelerator? Regardless of whether you are bullish, bearish, or skeptical - the topic of Explainable AI will continue to be debated publically and privately. Check out Vanessa's article on Explainable AI on Singularity Hub (https://singularityhub.com/2019/03/19/to-be-ethical-ai-must-become-explainable-how-do-we-get-there/) Leave some feedback: • What should we talk about next? Chetan Dube, the CEO of IPsoft Inc, goes one on one with Anthony to discuss the future of the workforce and how technology will change how we think and work. IPsoft is the largest privately owned artificial intelligence company. Chetan started his company after a question began to haunt him – “Can machines think?” His goal is to have machines come together with carbon forms to create a more efficient planet. IPsoft has already created technology that is changing the way companies interact with their customers. They have created the most human-like robot named Amelia, who is already utilized by some of the biggest corporations in the world. However, new technology comes with fear. Some fear that we may not be able to distinguish carbon life forms from androids. Colleagues in the workforce fear that machines and technology will take their jobs. Leadership fears the cost and risk associated with implementing new technology. Chetan explains how leadership will be redefined in the years to come. The risk of not implementing and utilizing technology is greater than the risk of adapting to the changes technology will bring to the workforce. Technology will change the landscape of the workforce and it is not a matter of if it will change, but when and how it will change. This technological revolution took 1/5th of the time of the first economic evolution. Chetan's one fear is that the masses will not be ready for the speed of the revolution. It is extremely important for leaders to align their business models with the changes that technology will bring, and to wake up the masses. Leaders need to prepare their workforce to understand that this technology is here to help them. It will open up colleagues' time to new creative thinking and problem solving, and their roles will be redefined, giving thought back to the people who lost it to task. With the changes that new technology will bring to the workforce, Chetan is hopeful and energized with the thought that the future will be filled with more imaginative and creative thinking. For the first 10 years of the company's existence, IPsoft's staff focused all of their efforts on researching and learning as much about the human brain as possible, not even writing a single line of code. Chetan sites current research which states the average human uses their creative brain less than 30% of the day, while 70-80% of every day is pulled down by common chores. He is excited to see what kind of human creativity will be unshackled as technology helps to unlock more time to use our creative brains. Humans are at the top of the food chain because of our brain and the new cortex, which allows us to think creatively. Chetan is confident that as technology evolves, human thinking will also evolve with it. To learn more about Chetan Dube and the IPsoft's work, visit their website: www.ipsoft.com.
