A movie that really destroyed all expectations... Directed by John R. Leonetti, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation is the martial arts fantasy film based on the Mortal Kombat video game franchise. Luke and Nathan enter the arena to review this sequel to the original 1995 film which is largely adapted from the 1995 video game Mortal Kombat 3. Every generation, a portal opens up between the Outerworld and Earth. Emperor Shao-Kahn (Brian Thompson), ruler of the mythical Outerworld, pounces the moment the portal reopens and slips through with his mighty warriors, intent on total domination and uniting the two worlds. However, he has only seven days to complete his task. In the meantime, opposition grows and warriors Sonya Blade (Sandra Hess), Jax (Lynn "Red" Williams), Kitana (Talisa Soto) and Liu Kang (Robin Shou) get ready for war.

It's the spookiest time of the year - Schlocktober! The guys dive back into the first non-scam artists Conjuring-verse flick Annabelle and the road starts off... just a little bumpy. They talk about the weird cult subplot that should have been the main plot, the doll not being pleasant to look at for anyone to genuinely want in their house, Alfre Woodard breathing life into the film in the ninth inning and much more. Next week: Schlocktober continues with a rather notorious found-footage movie. What We've Been Watching: Tales from the Crypt (1972) Trick 'R' Treat Questions? Comments? Suggestions? We wanted to start with Annihilation for... reasons. The 1995 movie was directed by Paul W. S. "look at how hot my future wife is" Anderson, but this piece of celluloid was directed by John R. Leonetti. Not only was the director replaced, but most of the cast were too; with Christopher Lambert being replaced by James Remar - there's a perfectly logical reason for this, and it's explored in the next Goes to the Movies episode. Teaser much? The plot of this movie revolves mostly around the games Mortal Kombat II and Mortal Kombat 3, which makes sense when you realise how little plot there are in fighting games.Initial ThoughtsNeither Squidge nor Jay saw this movie on the big screen. But Squidge remembers seeing Star Wars Episode 1 on the big screen, and Jay remembers The Power Rangers Movie as their first movie.Starting with a montage is a baller move, for sure. And it's even more impressive than the way that Casino Royale into Quantum of Solace did it.Full Show NotesMake sure to check out the full show notes for more discussion on the points we raise, some extra meta-analysis, some out-of-context screen grabs from the movie, and some links to related things. Are you a fan of the Doom games? Mortal Kombat: Annihilation is a 1997 American martial arts fantasy film directed by John R. Leonetti in his directorial debut from a screenplay by Brent V. Friedman and Bryce Zabel. Based on the Mortal Kombat video game franchise, it is the second installment in the Mortal Kombat film series and a sequel to the original 1995 film, of which Leonetti served as the cinematographer. Largely an adaptation of the video game Mortal Kombat 3 (1995), Annihilation follows Liu Kang and his allies as they attempt to stop the malevolent Shao Kahn from conquering Earthrealm. It stars Robin Shou as Liu, Talisa Soto as Kitana, James Remar as Rayden, Sandra Hess as Sonya Blade, Lynn Red Williams as Jax, and Brian Thompson as Kahn. Only Shou and Soto reprise their roles, with the rest of the characters recast from the previous film. Released to theaters on November 21, 1997, Annihilation received largely negative reviews for its story, characters, and special effects. It was also a commercial failure, grossing $51 million against a $30 million budget. Due to the film's poor critical and commercial response, a direct sequel was cancelled. A third Mortal Kombat film languished in development hell for nearly two decades until the series was rebooted by a 2021 installment. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/doseofnerdacumen/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/doseofnerdacumen/support

In the final installment of Catching Up On Cinema's Video Game Movie Month, Kyle and Trevor once again invite Kyle's brother Nik to assist them in reviewing John R. Leonetti's, Mortal Kombat Annihilation (1997)! Featuring Robin Shou and Talisa Soto as the only 2 returning cast members from the first film, MK Annihilation is a lackluster sequel that utterly fails to measure up to the charm and visual flair of the original. Overstuffed with lazy and inaccurate renditions of the franchises' core characters, the film is perhaps most noteworthy for it's meme worthy, cringe inducing dialogue, and absolutely horrendous (and overutilized) CGI character animation. Good for a laugh with friends, the film is otherwise without value outside of serving as an early showcase for the talents of future stunt kings Ray Park and JJ Perry.

First of all, we miss Jiffy Pop. Second of all, we need to talk about Annabelle, the demon, and who and what is doing the haunting around here. We discuss Chekov’s sewing needle, baby jails, and Peaky Blinders’ doll shrine. Romance is in the air for both of us, because Molly is smitten and flustered by “boring” John and Jen is jealous of a character from a fictional TV show. Good morning! Join us for Episode 85, won't you? This one is a doozy... This week, we are delighted to be joined by the director of Frightfest 2019 selection Sadistic Intentions... It's Eric Pennycoff! His chosen film? Mortal Kombat: Annihilation! Considered by Mitch to be "quite possibly the worst film we have ever done", MK: A is the direct sequel to Paul W.S. Anderson's 1995 video game adaptation and, as mediocre as that film is, the sequel is a horse of a different colour.   With James Remar replacing Christopher Lambert as Lord Raiden and only Robin Shou and Talisa Soto reprising their roles from the first film, cinematographer-turned-director John R. Leonetti (Annabelle, Wish Upon) steps into the directing seat for a film that is often considered one of the worst films of the 1990s. Did I mention it cost $30 million? The synopsis is as follows:  Every generation, a portal opens up between the Outerworld and Earth. Emperor Shao-Kahn, ruler of the mythical Outerworld, pounces the moment the portal reopens and slips through with his mighty warriors, intent on total domination and uniting the two worlds. However, he has only seven days to complete his task. In the meantime, opposition grows and warriors Sonya Blade, Jax, Kitana and Liu Kang get ready for war. If you could have seven wishes come true, one might wish for a couple of stupid things first. But once you realized they came with a price, just maybe you’d want to do more than wish away Ryan Phillipe’s chin-beard. “Wish Upon” was full of dumb or just non-existant logic, dumpster-diving dads, jaw-droppingly unironic clichés, and what are apparently the most amazing curtain rods ever made... and SOME fun deaths. It wasn’t enough to make it past a double “stream” from the guys, but thanks to the amusing-enough ridiculousness of it all, they didn’t completely hate it.
