They spread across the South amongst newly freed African American slaves and their descendants and became more commercialized in the 1920s and 1930s, often centering on a food festival. Participants in the Great Migration brought these celebrations to the rest of the country. During the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, these celebrations were eclipsed by the nonviolent determination to achieve civil rights, but grew in popularity again in the 1970s with a focus on African-American freedom and African-American arts. Beginning with Texas by proclamation in 1938, and by legislation in 1979, every U. S. state and the District of Columbia has formally recognized the holiday in some way. Juneteenth is also celebrated by the Mascogos, descendants of Black Seminoles who escaped from slavery in 1852 and settled in Coahuila, Mexico.The day was recognized as a federal holiday in 2021, when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law. What is Juneteenth and why is it a holiday? As Keith sees it, what happened on June 19th, 1865 is the opposite of Independence Day, the opposite of liberty and what the Declaration of Independence is about. June 19 was the day U.S. Army General Granger arrived in Galveston to take military command of the Republic of Texas, taking control by force away from the people and their elected representative government. June 19 as a “holiday” marks the completion of the invasion, overthrow, and conquer of Texas and the other members of the CSA after the War for Southern Independence. Having “National” in the new holiday's name is appropriate as it celebrates creation of one nationalistic all-powerful empire, destruction of the voluntary union of sovereign states - the opposite of the principle of self governance by the people America was founded upon and celebrated on July 4th. As the country prepared this month to celebrate Juneteenth National Independence Day, Collectiveffort's Jamel Mosely spent time getting to know Alice Green, Barbara Smith and Earl Thorpe, three trailblazing Black elders in the Capital Region. His filmed interviews became part of Hearst's Lift Every Voice project, which shared stories, experiences and reflections on being Black in America.  On this episode of The Eagle, Mosely talks about his vision for the project, and what he learned from the trio of icons. Juneteenth is the day on which we celebrate the emancipation of the enslaved in the United States. It commemorates June 19, 1865 – the date that General Gordon Granger proclaimed freedom for slaves in Texas. In 1872, Black leaders raised $1,000 to purchase land in Houston, now known as Emancipation Park, to celebrate Juneteenth. In 1938, Texas governor James Allred proclaimed the date be set aside for the observance of Emancipation Day. In the late 1970s, the Texas Legislature declared Juneteenth a "holiday of significance,” becoming the first to establish it as a state holiday. On this year's Juneteenth, a new 5,000-square-foot mural will be dedicated in Galveston. Entitled “Absolute Equality,” the mural marks the spot where General Order No. 3 was issued by Maj. Gen. Granger. And, Juneteenth National Independence Day is now a federal holiday, signed into law yesterday by President Biden. Activist Opal Lee, known as the Grandmother of Juneteenth, played an instrumental role in the holiday's journey to law, spending decades advocating for the date to be recognized nationally. To help us better understand the history of this holiday and the journey of African Americans in the state of Texas, we welcome to the program historian, author and native Texan Annette Gordon-Reed, the Carl M. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was signed on June 5, 1863 and Juneteenth was first celebrated on June 19, 1865, it wasn't until the 13th Amendment of the United States Constitution was ratified on December 6, 1865, that slavery truly ended. [15:00] Propaganda Scientists (9 minutes) Early on in the coronavirus outbreak, most scientists rejected the theory that COVID-19 leaked from a lab in Wuhan, China. The Lancet published a letter from 27 scientists that “strongly” condemned “conspiracy theories suggesting that COVID-19 does not have a natural origin.” Today, scientists like Anthony Fauci say they've always had an open mind about its origins. Others are now calling for an investigation into the lab-leak theory. What changed? One scientist recently admitted, “At the time, it was scarier to be associated with Trump and to become a tool for racists, so people didn't want to publicly call for an investigation into lab origins.” So the reason these scientists rejected the lab-leak theory was not because of science but because of Donald. J. Trump. [24:30] What's Juneteenth? (14 minutes) Yesterday, Joe Biden made June 19 a national holiday. The day will be called “Juneteenth National Independence Day.” On the yearly calendar, it's just two weeks before the July 4 Independence Day. It's more politics of division and hate. The House passed legislation Wednesday that would establish June 19 as Juneteenth National Independence Day, a US federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States, sending the bill to President Joe Biden's desk for his signature. The bill passed the House after the Senate unanimously passed the legislation Tuesday. The legislation was previously blocked by conservative Sen.
