On May 25, 2024 the world lost a legendary songwriter emblematic of the term Disney Legend. Richard M. Sherman, who, with his brother Roger, wrote some of the most beloved songs of the 20th century and into the 21st century, too, passed away at the age of 95. It's almost impossible to sum up Richard's life and legacy in the span of a few sentences, or even over this conversation, though I want to create space to honor a man whose music and spirit will continue to illuminate our lives for generations to come. On this episode of Notably Disney, host Brett Nachman is joined by two individuals who knew, wrote about, and worked with Richard over the years. Author Jeff Kurtti is a celebrated Disney author who has written several dozen books about various facets of Disney. Central to this dialogue, he is the co-producer of The Boys: The Sherman Brothers' Story documentary and an editor on the Walt's Time: From Before to Beyond book about the Sherman Brothers. Author Jim Fanning is an accomplished Disney author of many books, including the recent Drawing 100 Years of Disney Wonder, and has over the years crafted many articles, videos, and other pieces of writing about the Sherman Brothers' work. Jeff and Jim share their memories of Richard Sherman, including some incredible anecdotes and facts that illustrate the songwriter's creativity and kindness. Feel free to reach out to Brett via Twitter/X @bnachmanreports, subscribe to the podcast, and send your feedback to notablydisney@gmail.com New episodes of the podcast debut on the first and third Tuesday of every month.
Recently, Phil and David invited two of their friends -- the beloved stand-up comedian Wendy Liebman and her brilliant producer, writer, director and now podcaster husband Jeffrey Scherman -- to "Naked Lunch." Just days prior, Jeffrey's uncle Richard M. Sherman -- half of the legendary Sherman Brothers songwriting team along with Jeff's late great father Robert B. Sherman -- passed away at age 95. As a result, this "Lunch" begins with a spontaneous salute to The Sherman Brothers, and a discussion of their relationship to each other and Walt Disney, as depicted in Jeff and his cousin Gregory's acclaimed 2009 documentary, "The Boys: The Sherman Brothers' Story." From there, talk moves on to Wendy's illustrious comedy career and her relationship with Jeff -- and so much more. In honor of the passing of Disney Legend Richard M. Sherman, this episode is a tribute to "The Boys", Dick and Bob Sherman. The Sherman Brothers were instrumental figures in the skyrocketing success of the Walt Disney Company in the 1960s and beyond. More than that, Richard and his brother Robert B. Sherman (also a Disney Legend) were Walt's close confidants and would often be asked to play their lullaby "Feed the Birds" in his office on Friday afternoons. It is easy to understand why Walt described their work as "just the right spirit"; the Sherman Brothers' creations were eternally optimistic, and Disney as we know it would not be the same without them. Book Vs. Movie: Bedknobs and Broomsticks The Marty Norton Novels During WW2 Vs the 1971 Groovy Disney Film The Margos are closing out our “Month of Disney” with the 50th Anniversary of Bedknobs and Broomsticks a partly animated film that is based on the wonderful stories by Mary Norton. An English writer of children's books and was best known for the SciFi-Fantasy collection The Borrowers in the 1950s. For this story, she uses some supernatural elements to tell the tale of a trio of British kids during WW2 who are hiding out in the English countryside. They meet a local villager, Miss Price, who turns out to be an apprentice witch. The stories appeared as The Magic Bed Knob; or How to Become a Witch in Ten Easy Lessons and Bonfires and Broomsticks which in 1957 became Bedknobs and Broomsticks. The property was sold to Disney and was developed for years in the wake of the Mary Poppins success of the early 1960s. The movie takes place in 1940 where three kids (Carrie, Charlie, and Paul) are evacuated from London to live in Pepperidge Eye near the Dorset Coast at the start of the War. The Nazis are a big menace and Miss Price is studying witchcraft in order to fight them. With her magic spell, she creates a bed knob that can travel through space and time. In the movie, she is played by Angela Lansbury (a Book Vs Movie favorite!) and along with David Tomlinson (who has a tragic personal story!) they go on a weird and wonderful adventure that includes playing soccer with talking animals and invisible soldiers coming to their rescue to fight off the Germans. This production was one of the last for the Sherman Brothers for Disney and features some of their classic catchy music and a dance sequence that is a progressive step forward (for 1971 Disney!) So, between the original story and the animated movie--which did we prefer? In this ep the Margos discuss: The backdrop of WW2 London and how it changed art created at that time How Fascism is explained in this story The main differences between the children's novels & film. Starring: Angela Lansbury (Miss Price,) David Tomlinson (Mr. Browne,) Ian Weighill (Charlie Rawlins,) Cindy O'Callaghan (Carrie Rawlins,) Roy Snart (Paul Rawlins,) Roddy McDowell (Mr. Rowan Jelk,) Sam Jaffe (Bookman,) and Tessie O'Shea as Jessie Hobday. Degenerate Space are an art collective formed by artists Alice Ashton, Molly Irwin Clark and Rosa Irwin Clark in London, UK. Degenerate Space makes site-specific, participatory performance and installation work around issues of place, architecture, environment and identity especially regarding the shifting landscape of London. A project to note in particular was their work with the residents around Cressingham Gardens in Tulse Hill titled ‘The Smallness Inside the Bigness: Changing visions on Cressingham Gardens’ – a site responsive, interactive performance walk as part of the London Festival of Architecture and Antiuniversity Now Festival. Hear the trio discuss firsthand the formation of the collective, their quirks, their processes of investigation, their boundaries/limits with one another and why Nicki Minaj's 'Superbass' is so important to them! Submissions are now open for their newest project, "Solus and the City". Solus and the City is a project consisting of the construction of a small 'Solitude Shed' – a structure based on rural mountain bothies built on an urban site in London. Accompanying the structure will be a collection of material written from female perspectives exploring themes of solitude, sanctuary, stability and individuality. At the D23 Expo 2015 – 2 years ago, Richard Sherman first introduced us to “A Kiss Goodnight”. It is the story of a young Walt Disney, a poor farm boy from Marceline, Missouri who was fascinated by the annual Fourth of July fireworks. It was those fireworks that led to the initial spark that leads to Walt’s great imagination…the imagination that would ultimately bring us Disneyland. Remembering the Fourth of July fireworks from home, Walt wanted to leave every Disneyland guest with a special “Kiss Goodnight”, a Fourth of July fireworks celebration every night. We first heard Ashley Brown sing that song at the Expo in 2015. The song “A Kiss Goodnight” was featured during the Disneyland 60thAnniversary fireworks. It’s fitting two years later, at the D23 Expo 2017: “A Kiss Goodnight” a special book co-created by Disney Legends Richard M. Sherman and Floyd Norman, made its debut. What I would consider an adult picture book, starts with “Long ago, there was a farm in Missouri…” and concludes with “There was always a kiss goodnight” and includes a CD of the Ashley Brown recording of the original Richard Sherman song, “A Kiss Goodnight”. The book is illustrated by Disney Legend and animator Floyd Norman, following Walt’s journey. The book tells the story of a young Walt in Marceline and his inspiration from the free fireworks show, following the story Richard introduced us to at the D23 Expo 2015. At the D23 Expo 2017, “A Kiss Goodnight with Disney Legends Richard Sherman and Floyd Norman” arena panel was our first introduction to the book. It was hosted by Wendy Lefkon, Editorial Director Disney Editions. Richard tells a slightly different story of how the book came to be than the 2015 Expo, providing additional details behind the scenes. According to Richard, A Kiss Goodnight was actually a Disney Channel Television series that was never produced. Richard had written the theme song for the never produced TV series. The song was recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra and performed at the D23 Expo 2015. Wendy Lefkon was inspired by the song and the story Richard told at the D23 Expo 2015 – that inspiration led to the book and D23 2017 panel that is SamsDisneyDiary Episode 95. You can watch the full panel here and listen to the audio on SamsDisneyDiary the podcast.
Odds are you’ve been singing and humming Richard Sherman’s songs for most of your life. He and his brother won two Academy Awards for Mary Poppins and spent ten years writing songs for a variety of Walt Disney endeavors—including “It’s a Small World.” But Richard doesn’t live in the past: he’s as busy as ever, as you’ll hear in this lively conversation with Leonard and Jessie. He also discusses his famous father and what it was like growing up in Hollywood.

Many consider the closing of the famed Palace Theater in New York in 1932 as the final curtain for vaudeville. At that time Milt was only one year old. He became interested in the vaudeville era as a kid and loved talking to as many of the “old-timers” still around at the time. He was an aspiring comedy writer and was fascinated by the comedians of the past. He started collecting recordings of showbusiness personalities as a teenager. His hobby grew into a passion and his collection of thousands of vintage 78's and LP's is a treasure trove of variety history.Through his magical family he met and got to know famous people who were stars long before he was born. Working as a writer for Ralph Edwards TV Productions he was often called upon to keep subjects of his “This Is Your Life” TV show occupied while the production team set up their surprise for the subject. Edwards knew his young writer was enamored with the older stars and enjoyed talking to them. Thus Milt entertained legends like Buster Keaton, Stan Laurel, Ed Wynn, Mack Sennett, George Burns, Jack Benny and many others. While still in High School he worked as a record archivist for Eddie Cantor. Veteran stars Milton Berle, Bob Hope, Buddy Ebsen and Steve Allen often called upon Larsen for his consultation on songs and variety acts.He has always loved radio and his first job as a professional writer was with the ABC Radio network. It was a daytime audience participation show with variety acts and a 25-piece house orchestra. While still a teenager he was the weekly guest with radio personality Jim Hawthorne on a CBS radio program that featured milt's old records and commentary by CBS founder Andrew White. His weekend national radio shows recorded in his studio on the premises of the Magic Castle in Hollywood. His facilities house his huge record collection and his studio is designed specifically to play the old 78-RPM vintage recordings. His studio console turntables were originally installed at the NBC Radio City studios at Sunset and Vice in Hollywood. The shows are recorded using the newest state of the art MAC computer technology which includes to ability to clean up the snap, crackles and pops associated with the old records. The concept of the show is that younger generations have never heard samples of the great performers of the past. Like an old joke, if you never heard it before --- it's brand new with that in mind he leads you down the path to discovery. He introduces young people of today to a time of laughter and silly songs mixed in with some of the greatest music of all time. Oscar winning songwriter Richard M. Sherman (The Sherman Brothers – Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, It's a small World After All etc) is a guest on every show talking about the great songwriters of Tin Pan Alley. His other guest is a character known as Professor Hockmann, the world's oldest magician and vaudevillian who always plays just one of those really old acoustical records from Milt's collection.

The WDW Radio Show - Your Walt Disney World Information Station
Welcome to The WDW Radio Show - Your Walt Disney World Information Station. I am your host, Lou Mongello and this is show #80 for the week of August 17, 2008. This week’s show is very special, as I will be devoting an entire episode to a single segment, and more importantly, a single man. He is Richard M. Sherman. You know him as one of the Sherman Brothers, the most successful songwriting team in history, and the name that defines the music and mood of so many Disney feature films and theme park attractions. Mr. Sherman joins me in this one-to-one interview about his career beginnings, time at the Disney Studios, working for and with Walt Disney, and the stories behind the stories of working on timeless classics like Mary Poppins and legendary songs such as “it’s a small world” and hundreds of others. I’ll end the show not with announcements or voicemails, but instead, with my small tribute to the work of the Sherman Brothers in thanks for Mr. Sherman joining me on the show, and for a lifetime of memories he helped create. So sit back, relax, and enjoy this very special episode of the WDW Radio Show. You can email the show at lou@wdwradio.com or call the voicemail at 206-202-4WDW (4939). Visit the web site at wdwradio.com. Talk about the show by visiting and posting in the WDW Radio Show message forums at DisneyWorldTrivia.com. Thanks for listening! Be sure to tune in next week!
Richard M. Sherman and George Stiles, the film and stage composers of "Mary Poppins", come together for a special program that explores the creation of the original film score and how it was adapted and supplemented for the stage musical. Sharing a piano, they play and sing snippets of a variety of "Poppins" songs - including songs that were cut from both versions, some of which ended up in other familiar scores. Separately, Sherman and Stiles also provide quick overviews of their respective careers, with Sherman recalling how he and his brother Robert became the house composers for Disney and later wrote the stage musicals "Over Here" and "Busker Alley", and Stiles reviewing his partnership with Anthony Drewe and how they spent seven years writing "Just So", only to win the Olivier Award for their more swiftly created "Honk!" Original air date – April 27, 2007.
