Can you guess who the guys are talking about? GOAT, Legend, Gifted, Suspect, and Dumpster Juice: Where does your favorite bodybuilder rank? Our very own group of five GOATed bodybuilders and Gifted Coaches took 21 of the most notorious bodybuilders of all time and ranked them. We came up with a lot of answers but questions remain: Dorian Yates or Ronnie Coleman: Who's the true GOAT? After two Mr. Olympia titles, is Big Ramy a legend? Will the impact that they've made on the bodybuilding industry bring Suleose, Mike Israetel and Steve Hall to legend status? Kai Greene: The most suspect man alive? Was Markus Ruehl the greatest chain smoking, mass monster bodybuilder of all time? If Jason Genova isn't the true GOAT, then who is? Did we miss any of your favorite bodybuilders? Should we do an era by era tier list? How about a classic physique only list? Stan "The White Rhino" Efferding is an American IFBB professional bodybuilder and a powerlifter competing in the Southern Powerlifting Federation.Stan discusses being Jon "Bones" Jones personal trainer today, entering his first body building competition at 158 LBS, training with Flex Wheeler, the difference between body building and strength training, why the vertical diet shows you that red meat is not bad for humans & his appearance on "Shark Tank"!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
In this podcast, I chat with Stan Efferding all about speed training. If you're not familiar with speed training, it's based on the concept of lifting lighter weights with maximum velocity in order to increase your speed when using heavier weights. Basically, it boils do to doing lighter work as fast as possible (while still using proper form, of course). Speed training is particularly useful for powerlifters looking to increase their totals. However, it's also useful for people looking to try new things in the gym or maybe even squeeze out a bit more muscle and strength gain if they've already achieved the majority of their natural potential. And because I haven't done speed training myself, I wanted to get an expert like Stan onto the podcast to help people who are interested in this type of training. In case you're not familiar with Stan, he's held two all-time raw world powerlifting records and is colloquially known as the “world's strongest bodybuilder.” He's more than just super-strong, though. He also knows how to help other people get results, which is why he's worked with Hafthor Bjornsson, Ed Coan, Ben Smith, Flex Wheeler, and most recently, Jon Jones, a former UFC champion who holds many UFC records. In our discussion, Stan and I discuss what bar speed can tell you about muscle failure, the biggest things that can help your bar speed, the benefits of bodybuilding-style training and cardio on increasing bar speed, the concept of “overspeed,” and a whole lot more. So if you want to learn all about what bar speed is, why it matters, and practical tips for how you can boost yours, check out this interview! Timestamps: 6:14 - Why is speed training important? What has helped your speed training most? 9:33 - How does bar speed affect muscular failure? 15:59 - How can you increase the reps or sets you can do at a particular speed? 16:55 - What is general physical preparedness? 27:01 - How can you measure your bar speed without buying a bar speed device? 29:25 - At what point does the bar slow down in terms of reps in reserve? 35:31 - How can you incorporate speed training in your training program? After a short career as a police officer, Wheeler focused full-time on becoming a professional bodybuilder. He competed for the first time in 1983, but it was not until 1989 that he secured a first-place trophy at the NPC Mr. California Championships. He placed second at the 1993 Mr. Olympia, narrowly missing a win (something he was to repeat in 1998 and 1999). He is a 5-time Ironman Pro winner, 4-time Arnold Classic winner, and has won the France Grand Prix, South Beach Pro Invitational, Night of Champions, and Hungarian Grand Prix. While Wheeler had the reputation of being arrogant and overconfident, he attributed this to a need to compensate for his introversion and insecurity as a child and young man.[5] In 1994, he was involved in a near-fatal car accident that could have left him with lifelong paralysis. Falling back into depression again, he started training from scratch, returning with remarkable speed to bodybuilding's top tier. In 1999, Wheeler discovered that he had focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, a form of kidney disease. Despite press speculation as to the cause of the failure, Wheeler pointed out that the condition is hereditary, although drug use probably accelerated its onset. Wheeler announced his retirement from competitive bodybuilding in 2000, but continued to compete until 2003. Flex made a comeback at the 2017 Mr. Olympia, competing in the Classic Physique division, and finished at 15th place. In episode #28, Chris and Sean recap the interviews with Kevin Levrone, Flex Wheeler, and Lee Priest. They discuss what stood out to them, and what made these guests so special. Kevin lost his father at age ten, and his mother by twenty. How did Keven handle that, and what gave him the strength to carry on? Flex has been suicidal since he was a teenager, had his career cut short in need of a kidney transplant, and had his leg amputated just below the knee in late 2019. Why does he consider himself lucky? Lee Priest will most likely offend you. But, he doesn't care what you think about him! He's tattooed his entire body, paints his fingernails different colors, and dyes his hair. If you think that looks crazy, just wait until you hear crazy! Although he never won Mr.Olympia, the biggest bodybuilding contest in the world, he was a three time runner-up, and is ranked among the best bodybuilders of all time! Flex had legendary symmetry, and took the sport to a whole new level in the 1990's. *A special thanks to our sponsor, Don Pablo. Coffee has never tasted this good! Kenneth "Flex" Wheeler is an American IFBB professional bodybuilder. He won the Arnold Classic a then-record four times and was once described by Arnold Schwarzenegger as one of the greatest bodybuilders he had ever seen. Ronnie Coleman has stated that Wheeler was the best bodybuilder he competed against.
Chad Nicholls is a nutritionist that has worked with multiple famous body builders, Ronnie Coleman and Flex Wheeler being some of the names. He's a part time: Nutritionist, Trainer, Writer, Author, Radio Co-Host; and full time: FATHER & HUSBAND; NPC District Chairman Missouri.
It’s theorized in the bodybuilding community that the reason Flex Wheeler and other top Olympia caliber bodybuilders are able to build such incredible physiques is due to Myostatin deficiency. Other popular theories circulate around that include ideas as vastly different as androgen receptor sensitivity is higher in top bodybuilders, to the complete opposite side of the spectrum where some believe that training past a certain pain threshold is what separates champions from the rest and that genetics are just a small factor in determining bodybuilding success.…

IFBB Hall of Fame Professional Bodybuilder Flex Wheeler believes that his willingness to be vulnerable and openly share his struggles with the world is sometimes a weakness. However, that didn't hold him back from telling his compelling life story during this podcast. Flex talks about some of the very best contest appearances, events and feelings that he experienced as a bodybuilder--and what he's doing these days as a driven businessman. Wheeler explains why he feels that the camaraderie, connection, and competitiveness among the Gold's Gym Venice bodybuilders of the 90s made a much tighter group than the legendary closeness among Arnold Schwarzenegger and the "Pumping Iron" crew back in the 70s. He also reveals who was the real leader of the 90s bodybuilding stars back then. His answer will surprise you. The bodybuilding legend discusses the challenges he had growing up dealing with the childhood trauma of sexual abuse and low self esteem. He also talks about the suicidal thoughts that's he's battled most of his life and how they have only subsided a little over a decade ago.
