Tracey is particularly happy this month as we're discussing our favourite songs from her favourite ever year, 1991, including hip hop, shoegaze, thrash, pop, grunge, indie, & more. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - American Music Club, Billy Bragg, Curve, Cypress Hill, Dinosaur Jr, Extreme, The Field Mice, Guns N Roses, Chesney Hawkes, Ice-T, Mercury Rev, Metallica, Monster Magnet, My Bloody Valentine, Nirvana, Orbital, Primus, R.E.M., Scorpions, Sepultura, Shudder To Think, Slint, The SMashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, SPin Doctors, Teenage Fanclub, The Telescopes, Temple Of The Dog, A Tribe Called Quest Ft Leaders Of The New School, & The Wedding PresentFind all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5XhJtoJjmZC9DLNh2lQqCL?si=6c98c73fd7dd480bFind our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQIf you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes, you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdgIan's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqAand Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9NwThe playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. In the year, on July 26, 1990, American Music Club released their sixth studio album, California. Produced by Dennis Herring, this record featured a blend of folk-rock and alternative soundscapes that captured the essence of the band's hometown. Recorded in just over a month, the album showcased singer Mark Eitzel's introspective lyrics and the band's dynamic instrumentation. California is a journey through heartbreak and redemption, with each track offering a glimpse into the human experience. Let's talk American Music Club, California!

The slowcore sound can be simplified down to tempo and a minimalist approach, but like every genre or subgenre of rock music, there are always those pushing the boundaries and reinventing. On the 1996 album Three Sheets To The Wind by Idaho, the boundary pushing comes as a pair of straight-up rock songs that wouldn't sound out place on a Dinosaur Jr. or Heatmiser album. From there, the band adds jazzy and soulful elements - brushed drums here, an electric piano there - paired with Jeff Martin's evocative vocal that falls somewhere between the folky sadcore of American Music Club's Mark Eitzel and the more experimental post-rock of Low's Alan Sparhawk. We hate to throw around the phrase 'criminally unheralded', but it sure does seem to fit San Francisco slowcore pioneers American Music Club and lead singer/songwriter Mark Eitzel. This week's guest, DAGGERzine creator Tim Hinely, brings us their 2nd album, 'Engine'. Warning: Eitzel's poignant, devastatingly raw songs will get under your skin and fester. Beautifully. "And anything beautiful That you can contrive Has no desire to survive..." Songs discussed in this episode: Kaleidoscope World - The Chills; When Your Love Is Gone - American Music Club; 24 - Red House Painters; Big Night - American Music Club; Straight Edge - Minor Threat; Room Above The Club (AMC cover) - Frank 'Rat Bastard' Falestra (live 2012 Tobacco Road, Miami); Outside This Bar, At My Mercy, Gary's Song, Nightwatchman, Clouds, Electric Light, Mom's TV - American Music Club; I Need My Girl - The National; If You Have To Ask - Mark Eitzel; Art Of Love, Asleep, Kathleen, This Year, Outside This Bar (off 'A Toast To You', recorded live Nov 10, 2004 - Pittsburgh, PA) - American Music Club

Peter and Karl go way back. They were in their first band Savalas together which morphed into Sine Star Project. Sine Star Project (an anagram of Peter's name) are a tricky act to pin down, but you can hear influences from the Buckleys (Tim and Jeff), Elliott Smith, Aimee Mann, Love, Ry Cooder and Pink Floyd to The Flaming Lips, American Music Club and Grant Lee Buffalo…even Berlioz and Bruckner. We learn about Peter's start as a musician on trumpet and piano, though to achieving his dreams fronting a band signed by One Little Indian (who also have Skunk Anansie and Bjork on their roster). Peter is also a talented producer, and talks us through his time working as a producer and engineer on a host of bands, most notably The Delays. We finished with a glimpse of Peter's current projects, fusing classical and electronica genres together and taking them out on the road as a solo act. Keep an eye on his INSTAGRAM PAGE, and make sure you catch a show! You can also find Peter's SoundCloud page HERE and his BandCamp HERE.Listening to the podcast is all the support we need, but if you'd like to go a little further then you can make a donation to the show HERE. Our most 'recent' album covered to date is 'San Fransisco' by American Music Club, presumably named after the Californian city in which they were formed back in 1983. San Fransisco was their 7th and final album before they disbanded in 1995. There was a reformation in 2004 which lasted for a further 6 years and saw the release of 2 further LP's by the band. American Music Club were a band that Rick was totally unaware of, having only made a minor blip in the UK charts - listen to the episode to get the story of why Kate purchased the LP and what her thoughts are on it having re-listened to the album ahead of the podcast recording. Recording date was 9th of January 2022 and apologies that it's taken much longer than normal to edit and publish - life sometimes just gets in the way of all the fun doesn't it?! If you're reading and listening to this ahead of 23.1.2022, feel free to send Kate a happy 50th birthday message! Our social links and email address are as follows: Twitter @Memorabiliapod (https://twitter.com/Memorabiliapod) Facebook @MemorabiliaPodcast (https://www.facebook.com/Memorabilia-Podcast-102585322133793) email memorabiliapodcast@gmail.com As ever, we explore the history of the band, with extra focus on enigmatic singer/songwriter Mark Eitzel of whom 'Rolling Stone' magazine were big fans. Discover why Rick likened Mark to Bryan Adams much to Kate's surprise. There's a track by track anaysis of the record, and a rating from both presenters. The record was released either September or October 1994 (the records are sketchy!) where the tide of manufactured pop, novelty acts and established radio and chart artists was starting to turn in favour of more alternative guitar bands, traditionally confined to the indie charts and late night radio shows. Blur, Oasis and the like were lurking with intent out side the top 10 of the UK single charts and the album charts included artists such as The Cranberries and R.E.M. It was an exciting time to be an alternative / indie music fan. As well as the autumnal music scene in 1994, we review news events from the UK, what was showing at the cinema, and which programmes were casting light into the lounges up and down the country from the television sets of the nation. This month we're travelling through time almost 3 decades to 1993, where we were watching Animaniacs, going to the arcade to play Mortal Kombat II, & visiting an ill-fated dinosaur themed tourist attraction off the coast of Costa Rica. Helen also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year. Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - The Afghan Whigs, American Music Club, Beck, Counting Crows, Cypress Hill, Depeche Mode, Dinosaur Jr., Entombed, Faith No More & Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E., Gallon Drunk, PJ Harvey, Huggy Bear, James, Die Krupps, The Lemonheads, Madder Rose, Mazzy Star, New Order, Onyx, Pearl Jam, Sepultura, Slowdive, The Smashing Pumpkins, Snoop Dogg, Spin Doctors, Teenage Fanclub, Tindersticks, Tool, Ugly Kid Joe, & Voodoo Queens.Find all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/520WJ8cqN8wAVxs3a5RMFT?si=ef1a6d0e25cf44d6Find our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQ If you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes, you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdg Ian's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqA and Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9Nw The playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Lydia ClarkeRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Say hello at www.facebook.com/wedigmusicpcast or tweet us at http://twitter.com/wedigmusicpcast or look at shiny pictures on Instagram at http://instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast Part of the We Made This podcast network. https://twitter.com/wmt_network You can also find all the We Dig Music & Free With This Months Issue episodes at www.wedigpodcasts.com Support the We Made This podcast network on Patreon: www.patreon.com/wemadethis
“Her Favourite Hitchcock Films” A native of Northern California, Jerry Vessel was the bassist for the beloved San Francisco outfit Red House Painters. The band, who formed in 1989, put out four albums on 4AD and toured all over North America and Europe before calling it a day in 2001. Post-Painters, Vessel played drums for the Muons and bass for Six Eye Columbia and he also put out two solo albums under the moniker Heirlooms of August. Heirlooms' sophomore album Down at the 5-Star found one of the songs featured in the TV series Parenthood. Vessel's third effort is under his own name this time around and it really makes sense. A stripped down affair that's stark, spare, personal and unflinchingly honest, Her Favorite Hitchcock Films was written about his relationship with fashion designer Alexis O'Connell and it not only details their time together, it also confronts dealing with her sudden loss. Punctuated by piano violins, cellos, and atmospheric production courtesy of American Music Club's Bruce Kaphan, the compositions on Her Favorite Hitchcock Films are as poetic as they are conversational. Beautifully constructed, they're parenthetical, interstitial, referential and emotional. Name-checking Darby Crash, David Lynch, aluminum boats, Thelonious Monk, druid forts and Townes Van Zandt, the songs that make up this album are filled with lyrical intensity in that they conjure the world Vessel and O'Connell built and occupied together. When you're close with someone you construct universes that are made up of the things you mutually love and this is a stirring homage to those universes. Yes, there's darkness and of course, there's pain here, but every song is charged with love. It's vulnerable but in that vulnerability there's tremendous life-affirming strength. It's quite an album. And this is quite a conversation—Vessel talks to Alex about grief, his friendships with his former Red House Painters bandmates, Townes Van Zandt, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jack London and why the piano was his go-to instrument this time around. www.jerryvesselmusic.bandcamp.com www.jerryvesselmusic.com www.bombshell radio.com www.alexgreenonline.com
Welcome one all, to the penultimate episode of season 1!! This weeks guest is the front person of one of my all time favorite bands, Tom Willecome. I fell in love with Bedford Falls the 1st time I saw them in the summer of 2007, at a punk alldayer in Cambridge. Their sound ticked all the boxes for me, being a melting pot of Buffalo Tom, Lemonheads and The Replacements. They've recorded 3 albums on their career to date and all are absolute classics that I properly rinsed throughout the good times and the shit times. It was a real pleasure to catch up with Tom a few months back over Skype and chat music. His 5 choices are fantastic, as are the stories that are associated with each tune. If you're new to Bedford Falls, I implore to go check them out and I can pretty much guarantee they'll be your new favorite band. This week Susan and Michaela sit down with native San Franciscan Marc Capelle to talk about his artistic career and the city's sunny Mission District. A musician, composer, producer, educator and entertainer, Capelle has performed with the American Music Club, Tommy Guerrero and The West Coast Spiritual Corinthians for decades. He's even had guest performances with artists like The Plastic Ono Band, Rodriguez, Grandaddy, and Kelley Stoltz. Capelle founded SFO's live music program “ You Are Hear,” and remained the programmer and producer of it for nine years. Likewise, Capelle is the founder and musical director of the Red Room Orchestra and the soul and pop dance ensemble Marc & the Casuals. He studied at Columbia College at Columbia University, and since returning to his home city, Capelle has taken advantage of the deep concentration of arts and music that the city offers. Such concentration of the arts can be found in Capelle's own neighborhood, The Mission. In the mid 20th Century, artists and musicians flocked to The Mission to find affordable housing, thus spawning an explosion of creativity that spilled out of every bar and restaurant. Its cultural history fueled the district's colorful character, first by its inhabitance of the city's Native American population, to the Irish, and now to the cherished Latinx community. Today, not only is the neighborhood dominated by an abundance of the arts, but the food, music, and culture has a vibrant Mexican and Latinx flare. There was even a time when Spanish could be heard more than English on the neighborhood's streets. The Mission has had its fair share of challenges, such as increased gang violence in the 80's and rising costs from the growing tech industry of the last 20 years. Nevertheless, it maintains its lively artistic spirit, and who better to tell its story than Mission musician Marc Capelle, who can be found making music on The Mission's streets or at various venues like The Chapel on Valencia St. Check out Capelle's compositions and sound design in the Bay Area art scene documentary “Tell Them We Were Here,” or read more about him on the local news website Mission Local: https://missionlocal.org/2021/06/people-we-meet-a-san-francisco-musician-who-never-left/ Meet Marc Capelle!
By the time of their fifth album Everclear from 1991, American Music Club was anything but a household name. If you caught their single "Rise" on late on night on MTV, or by chance on an adventurous radio station, you are among a lucky few. Considering the musical landscape for rock, where 80s hair/glam metal was still dominant while ascendent alternative had yet to be come a proper decade-defining brand name, it's easy to see why you may have missed it. AMC evokes ideas of genres without ever settling on one, making mainstream classification all but impossible. Touches of Americana thanks to acoustic guitars, but not really any twang. Downbeat and bleak slowcore until Mark Eitzel furiously strums an acoustic in bursts of kinetic release. The album feels timeless, yet could easily be the recollection of a single night of boozing and fury. It did make Rolling Stone take notice, granting the album "of the year" consideration and naming Mark Eitzel the preeminent songwriter of the moment, so maybe it's time everyone else finds the reverbed-out beauty in Everclear. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart.

Episode 54 of LTA is a world away from episode 53. Whereas in episode 53, Eric Reanimator and I discussed two dangerous front men in rock, this time around, I am joined by the greatest film and music expert Bath has ever known, Mr Bernard Stickwell (Sticky to his friends) to discuss two sensitive singer songwriter types. 2012 saw the first release of new, non-demo material in 40 odd years from British songwriter Bill Fay. His new album “Life Is People” is a warm sounding album rich in its song arrangements. Fay writes songs about what he has discovered about life - both the disappointing and hopeful – through actually living it. He has worked in a multitude of jobs since originally giving up the industry (not giving up music) to keep himself afloat. It’s these experiences that dictate his subject matter, and it all rings true, as Sticky and I discuss. We also cover the 1994 album by former American Music Club frontman, Mark Eitzel, “60 Watt Silver Lining”. Sticky introduced me to this record, and it’s become a favourite. Imagine Tom Waits, Burt Bacharach and Roy Orbison getting together at a late night bar, and you get a vague idea of what’s going on here. Eitzel’s obviously had his heart broken and stomped on. From misery comes great art, but it’s been suggested that he’s often taking the piss. This is part of our discussion (and we cover blaxploitation films too). We had fun, and I hope you dig it. Speaking of Eric, he returns with his Album I Love segment to discuss a couple of long players by Kevin Kinney, Macdougal Blues from 1990 and Down Out Law 1994. Kevin was the lead singer of a band Eric has long championed, Drivin’ and Cryin’. Eric’s reflections on Kinney’s solo work makes for interesting listening. You can download the podcast at iTunes by searching for “love that album”. You can stream or download it at “http://lovethatalbum.blogspot.com”. Send me any feedback at rrrkitchen@yahoo.com.au (written or mp3 voicemail) or join the Facebook group at http://www.facebook.com/groups/lovethatalbum and let us know your thoughts on your favourite singer songwriters, whether you prefer the attempt at a slightly new show format, or just anything music related that you’d like to chat about. If you’re enjoying the show, please spread the word. Let friends know that there’s a podcast where albums are discussed passionately. If you want to write an iTunes review in support of the show, I’d be hugely grateful for that too.
After acknowledging that producer Benny Evangelista had a heart attack recently but is recovering nicely and should return sometime soon to man the knobs we get back to business at the TVTM. And that business is to give the people nothing. ("And loving it!") We actually do have stuff to talk about. The Voice of America was filming and recording Question Boy (Chronicle media and political writer Joe Garofoli) for a story about what journalists are doing in new media areas to enhance their positions. So I guess his being Porno Putin and Bill Walton makes him the poster boy for how NOT to branch out. We have a lot of TV and non-TV news, including how Nickelodeon is trying to get ahead of the New Dora controversy by sending out a statement about how she's "age appropriate" and that she has not, as we've said, grown into a hootchie skank. Taking this one step further (of course) we imagine how "Maisy" grows into a more adult oriented series, where Charlie ends up on "Bars." Later we have a HUGE announcement about "Benny's Corner." Here's a hint: TVTM management has decided to shift "Justin's Corner" (that's super-sub producer Justin Beck, who's propensity to swear really resonates with the young crowd) to one of our other properties, like MTV or the CW. Something good is going to come out of Benny's ticker problems and that something is, well, enormous profits for the TVTM corporation. In addition, some of the people on our TVTM Facebook page discuss what Benny's show should be about. And hey, we found BobMac's "lost" MP3 message, where he "re-edits" our reading of his script for "Bars," adding a laugh track. Yes, he's turned "Bars" into a sitcom instead a bleak documentary. He even lays in a bit of our unofficial theme song, "Mission Rock Resort" from Mark Eitzel of American Music Club. The script doesn't make much more sense to us with a laugh track. But hey, as Eitzel says, "Nothing changes. Not ever."
