In a Chinese study, donor CAR-T cells sent autoimmune diseases into remission. There's hope that the therapy is scalable. And, scientists used decades of yellow-bellied marmot research to find a way to measure how adverse events affect wild animals' survival.CAR-T Cell Therapies Show Promise For Autoimmune DiseasesFor decades, immunologists have explored CAR-T cell therapy as an effective tool to fight blood cancer. Increasingly, CAR-T cells are being explored as a potential silver bullet for treating autoimmune diseases, like lupus—which currently have no cure. Thus far, CAR-T cell therapy has largely used CRISPR-modified immune cells from a person to treat that person's own diseases. But new research from China has made a huge step forward for this treatment: Researchers were successful in using donated CAR-T cells from one person to treat another person's systemic sclerosis, an autoimmune condition that causes atypical growth of connective tissues. If donor CAR-T cell therapy does indeed work, as posited in this paper, it could mean the therapy is more scalable than it would be otherwise. Joining Ira to talk about this study and its potential impact is Daniel Baker, PhD student in the immunology lab of Dr. Carl June at the University of Pennsylvania.Measuring The Effects Of Early Life Adversity—In MarmotsIt's well-established in psychology that if you experience trauma as a child, chances are it'll impact your physical and mental health as an adult, and could even affect your economic status. In academic terms, this is called early childhood adversity. And psychologists have developed a scoring system for measuring the cumulative effect of adverse childhood experiences, which can include abuse and household dysfunction, and it can help predict health risks later in life.So we can specifically measure that in humans. But what about other animals? If you've adopted a dog that's had a turbulent past, you know that that can result in reclusive or skittish behavior as an adult. But there hasn't been a good way to measure it in wild animals.Well, a new study from UCLA, published in the journal Ecology Letters, establishes a similar index for wild animals, and it used decades of findings from a mammal: the yellow-bellied marmot. So how could it help conservation efforts for other animals?Ira Flatow talks with Xochitl Ortiz-Ross, a PhD student in ecology and evolutionary biology at UCLA, and one of the authors on that study.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. For our American listeners you may recognize the name Punxsutawney Phil (aka the star of Groundhog Day). This well known rodent has a lot more tricks up its sleeves than predicting whether or not there will be 6 more weeks of winter. Joining us today to talk about his west coast relatives is Dr. Greg Florant, biology professor and director of the Graduate Center for Diversity and Access at Colorado State University. Dr. Florant, who specializes in animal hibernation, specifically Marmots not only shares his now widely used technique to catch marmots in the wild but also how these animals are able to survive with a body temperature just above freezing. **When we talk about hepatitis please note we are referencing Hep B, not C as mentioned.** To lear more about Dr. Florant and his research check out the links below! https://www.nsf.gov/bio/bioac/members/bio_sketch/Greg_Florant.pdf https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2000/02/000202075735.htm https://www.coloradoan.com/story/csu/2015/02/02/every-day-is-groundhog-day-for-csu-researcher/22599379/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POafue9RsuI https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2527986/ We cannot thank Dr. Florant enough for his time and sharing his knowledge with us! Can you picture yourself rescuing, rehabilitating or even releasing individuals from a Critically Endangered species in the wild? Or translocating wolves from Canada to be released in Yellowstone National Park in the US? Those are just two examples of the work of Dr. Malcolm McAdie, a Canadian wildlife veterinarian who's worked with species such as wolves, snakes, Bald Eagle and Critically Endangered Vancouver Island Marmots. As a wildlife vet, Malcolm works with the Marmot Recovery Foundation, overseeing all the captive breeding and Marmot care, and rescuing and releasing Marmots. He also provides specialized care to all the animals at the North Island Wildlife Recovery Association, among many other exciting projects. In this episode, Malcolm shares his career journey, the highlights of being a wildlife vet, and the importance of sharing conservation success stories. He also explains some of the keys to his own career success - including being flexible and available, and making connections that led to work.
Thanks to Dean for suggesting this week's topic, the marmot! Thanks also to Al-Ka-Lines Studio for the beautiful bat pin! You should definitely visit their online shop, because all their jewelry is hand-made by the two of them. Further reading: The secret to longevity? Ask a yellow-bellied marmot The yellow-bellied marmot doing a sit [By Inklein, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=2675916]: A groundhog keeping an eye out for danger: Show transcript: Welcome to Strange Animals Podcast. I'm your host, Kate Shaw. This week we're going to have a short little episode about a short little animal suggested by Dean, although I don't know if Dean is short and/or little. Probably not. The name Dean makes me think of a tall person, probably someone who plays sports and can run really fast, so basically completely unlike a marmot. Dean suggested the marmot, specifically the yellow-bellied marmot. Before we get started, two quick notes. First, thanks so much to Kathi and Alex of Al-Ka-Lines Studio for the gorgeous bat pin! They make hand-crafted leather jewelry and while they usually sell wholesale to shops, I checked with Kathi to see if it was okay to link to their shop and they said that yes, they sometimes sell to individuals too. I've put a link in the show notes in case you're interested in seeing what they have for sale. They recently started listening to the podcast in order from the first episode and so far they're not sick of my voice yet. Second, I'll be at Furry Weekend Atlanta this coming weekend, assuming you're listening to this episode when it comes out on May 8, 2023. If you're going to be there too, let me know and we can meet up. I went to way too many conventions last year so this one and Dragon Con at the end of August are the only ones I have planned this year, and I'm not on any programming on either. I just plan to look at people's amazing costumes and attend interesting panels and have fun dancing in the evenings. Also, I'll probably eat a lot of pizza. Now, on to the marmots! If you live in North America, you may have seen a marmot without realizing it. I didn't realize that the groundhogs that are pretty common where I live in the eastern United States are a type of marmot. Similarly, if you live in the western part of North America, especially in mountainous areas, you may have seen the yellow-bellied marmot. Other species of marmot live in Asia, Europe, and other parts of North America. One interesting thing is that the groundhog of eastern North America is actually more closely related to the marmots of Europe and Asia than it is to the other North American marmot species. Marmots are big rodents related to squirrels, and in fact they're considered a type of ground squirrel along with the closely related chipmunks and prairie dogs. They dig burrows and mostly eat plant material, and can grow quite large. The largest species is probably the Olympic marmot that only lives in the state of Washington in the Pacific Northwest of North America, which can weigh up to 18 lbs, or 8 kg. That's its summer weight, though, when it's had time to eat lots of food. All marmots hibernate and during that time they survive on the fat reserves they build up in warm weather. Basically all marmots are about the size of a cat, but they're big chonks with short legs, short tails, little round ears, and a blunt muzzle. Its thick fur makes it look even larger than it really is. The yellow-bellied marmot mostly lives in higher elevations and, like all marmots, it's well adapted to cold weather. It's a social animal that lives in small colonies and spends most of its time underground when it's not out finding food. It's mostly brown with yellowish markings underneath and a spot of white between its eyes. It usually digs its burrow among rocks and can have multiple burrows in its territory, so if it spots a predator it doesn't have far to run to get safely underground.

Why are some sounds more frightening than others? Are there evolutionary origins behind the things we find scary? And is there anything more blood-curdling than a full throated scream?Becky Ripley and Emily Knight tune in to the sounds that send the shivers down our spines, via a frightened Marmot in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, and a brand new kind of musical instrument known as the 'apprehension engine'. Beware listeners, you may be in for a fright....Featuring professor Daniel Blumstein, Chair of the Department of Ecology at UCLA, and film score composer Mark Korven. Produced and presented by Emily Knight and Becky Ripley.
Today we sit down with the one and only Star Lord! We instantly regret not getting the story behind his trail name, as one can only imagine, is he a lord, is he a star, is he the lord of all stars? Well one can only imagine... We begin the show by quickly going into the only subject that matters, you guessed it MARMOTS! We hope that everyone takes a moment or 5 minutes, to lose themselves inside the joy, wonder, and unbridled love that is the cutest animal in the world, marmots. We then diverge to the questions that truly matter, like what would one's choice of "animal pokemon" would you chose in Wisconsin? We chat when love surpasses porcupine quills, Twinkies on trail, and "knowing the suck." We get a quick background into Star Lord's progression into what he calls "basically just being a bum" or what others more commonly know as thru-hiking. We chat health on trail and the growth of a hiker through junk food, to healthy food, but mostly back to junk food. We chat about the progression of lightweight backpacking in Star Lord's hiking progress, and the journey to become quicker and lighter. We dive deep into many thoughts on the Appalachian Trail. We look into Star Lord's first long distance thru-hike and the mentality one has to have going into it and the mentality he had to maintain the joy in the journey. We talk wet. We talk the special wet of the Appalachian Trail, the only type of wet that matters, the AT rain and humidity. We dive into the appeal of hiking through 14 states, and the mentality of either getting used to it or going home. We quickly touch on comparing the PCT and AT and West vs East hiking. Then the conversation takes on a wonderful ride along a "chatting rollercoaster" as we bounce from topic to topic. We chat near death in the Sierras, the Pacific Crest Highway, Bradwell Bay on the Florida Trail, and the crown jewel of hiking, the Continental Divide Trail. We chat route finding along the Hot Springs Trail, no filter no problem, and the underrated state of Wyoming. We chat ground truthing and the mystery of "actual" miles done each day compared to "map" miles. We chat losing your mind to find your soul. We then dive fully into the Ice Age Trail which Star Lord finished only a few days prior. We chat about the passion of the IATA and all its volunteers and members, we discuss bars of the trail, trail magic, and road walking. We chat water carries, having a hiking companion, and assumptions vs reality along what he calls "The Florida Trail of the Midwest." We then finally arrive at the point in the show that we all have been waiting for... the cows of Wisconsin. Unfortunately, we get sidetracked only a few minutes into the "cow love" talk and don't give them the full time and honor they deserve, and for that we are eternally sorry. We chat cow averages per day, barbed wire fence restrictions, and embracing the only animal that matters besides marmots, the cow. We wrap up the show with a Ramen Rating Review from Star Lord on his most recent hike, The Ice Age Trail. Wonderful rating... yet his flavor profile has us crying slightly inside. Truly a wonderful chat with Star Lord, with many tangents, much emotion, and rambles that only two passionate hikers can accomplish together. Thank you Star Lord, now go please "knock on some corn" for good luck! FAVORITE QUOTES: "Deep down every animal wants to be cuddled." DISCLAIMER: DO NOT CUDDLE WILD ANIMALS "Everything wishes it could be a marmot." "Weather is weather, whether you weather it or not." "Life is short, the trail shorter." Meg Mackenzie is one of South Africa's top female ultra-runners. Growing up along the famous Comrades route – a 55 mile stretch of road between Durban and Pietermaritzburg – not to mention being born into a family of sports enthusiasts, it was almost inevitable that she would fall into the running community. But it didn't happen overnight - her journey to becoming a professional runner and coach was deliberate and considered. In this week's podcast, Meg talks about how lucky she feels having grown up when she did in South Africa, but that the country she once knew has changed. She says while there are many women who still run in the mountains, for her, the fear of running alone was too great. It was this fear that prompted a massive change in her life, that of moving to Chamonix. Having seen snowfall for the first time in April this year, conquering the mountains in winter, may just be her biggest challenge yet. Sophie (age 7) and Ellie (age 5) tell some of the best loved tales from Herodotus.----more---- They start with the story of Croesus. Herodotus explains how Croesus was very rich. However, his neighbours were the powerful Persians. Croesus wanted to know if he should go to war with the Persians. He decided to ask an Oracle what to do. But he couldn’t be sure if the Oracles would tell the truth. So he asked different Oracles the same question, “What am I doing now?”. Then he arranged to do something very strange. He cooked a tortoise in a pot. Only one Oracle got the right answer. So he asked that Oracle whether he should attack the Persians. Herodotus tells us that the Oracle told him that if he attacked Persia a great empire would be destroyed. Emboldened, Croesus attacked the Persians. And prompted lost. He did not realise that the empire that he would destroy would be his own. Our second story from Herodotus is about the Persian Emperor discussing difference between peoples. He asked the Greeks if they would eat the body of their own dead father. The Greeks and Sophie and Ellie are disgusted at the very idea. The Greeks cremate their dead. Then the Persian Emperor asked some Indians if they would burn the body of their dead father. The Indians are disgusted at the very idea. They eat the bodies of the dead. Our third story from Herodotus is about the naughty Persians visiting the Greeks. The Persians request that the Greek wives join for dinner. But they then keep trying to kiss the wives. The Greek husbands are not happy about this. That night they get all the Greek men without beards to secretly dress up as women. When the Persians try again to kiss them, the Greek men stab the Persians with hidden daggers. Our fourth story from Herodotus sees the Persian invasion of Greece. The Persian Emperor builds a bridge of boats. But a storm comes and destroys the bridge. The Persian Emperor is so angry that he has the sea punished. It is whipped. Ellie observes that this is completely pointless. Our final story from Herodotus is about the Golden Ants. Herodotus tells a story about ants as big as small dogs which go digging in the East for gold. People then wait for them to come out of their burrows and take the gold. The story seems ridiculous. But more recently people have realised that Marmots in the Himalayas come out of their burrow covered in gold dust and local people would take the gold off them. Maybe this is the story that Herodotus was talking about in his tale. PATRONS’ CLUB If you liked this episode then you will love our Seven Wonders of the World episode. Often on this podcast we bring you some discouraging words about the environment, though generally with some concrete solutions. Although 2020 was a pretty terrible year on many fronts, there was, in fact, some positive news on the environmental front and in this program, we offered good news from around the world. We don't want to minimize the crisis. According to the World Wildlife Foundation, “Humanity has wiped out 60% of mammals, birds, fish and reptiles since 1970, leading the world's foremost experts to warn that the annihilation of wildlife is now an emergency that threatens civilization.” While that statistic is chilling and heartbreaking, there are some good news stories, and we provided some from here in the US, from Canada, from around the world on topics ranging from preserving Marmots and Tasmanian Devils to solar cars and how reading labels can save the earth.

Starting with the plight of one tiny animal called Marmots, we expand our perspective to include ancient old-growth forests and learn how the future of both are connected. We then pivot slightly to view forests as places of sustenance for all, and pick up a few hiking tips including how to select the right cane / stick for the job. Our host and story teller draws on a lifetime of outdoor living to weave stories into every twist and turn along the path, on this episode of Outdoors with Lawrence Gunther titled, “Marmots, Forests, Hiking and Living in Harmony”.
In these uncertain times, James and Jamie touch base on last weeks episode and discuss the weekly Modern Misconception on how online communities are arguably replacing the tactile communities of the recent past. We touch on sensitive subjects of suicide and overall weigh in on the good and the bad of online communication/communities. Also, we have teenagers eating Marmots and dying from the bubonic plague!
