Welcome to The Bridge Between Us Podcast, where we navigate the challenges and opportunities of walking alongside LGBTQ-identified loved ones from a Biblical perspective. Hosted by Melinda Patrick, today's solo episode is all about being your own advocate as you build a support team for your personal journey. In Today's Episode, You'll Hear About: The importance of a support system and how Jesus' story of raising Lazarus teaches us that no one walks the journey alone. The need for Godly counsel and guidance in your healing process. Signs to look for that indicate you might need professional help, including counselors or therapists, to aid you through grief or trauma. How to interview a counselor to ensure they align with your Biblical convictions and are a good fit for your needs. Practical questions you should ask potential counselors to be your own advocate. The role of trusting in God's process and finding freedom not just for your loved one, but for yourself too. Key Scriptures Discussed: John 11:44 – The story of Lazarus: Jesus doesn't expect us to walk alone. Galatians 6:2 – Carry one another's burdens and fulfill the law of Christ. Romans 8:28-29 – God works all things for our good and transforms us into the image of His Son. Proverbs 11:14, 20:5, 24:6 – The wisdom and safety found in seeking godly counsel. Key Takeaways: Building a support team of friends, prayer warriors, counselors, and more is essential to emotional and spiritual healing. A biblical counselor can provide guidance and a fresh perspective when you're stuck in grief or difficult circumstances. As a self-advocate, you have the right to interview and find the right counselor who aligns with your values. Healing and freedom aren't just for your loved one—they're for YOU too. Your journey is just as much about your own transformation. Red Flags: Signs You May Need Help Melinda shares some red flags to watch for to determine if you might be struggling with grief or trauma: Difficulty remembering the last time you laughed or enjoyed time with loved ones. Struggling to engage in activities you once loved. Feeling emotionally drained by everyday tasks. Avoiding people or conversations. Trouble celebrating others' successes. Feeling overwhelmed by bitterness, guilt, or sadness. Questions to Ask Your Counselor: How does your Christian faith influence your approach to therapy? What's your view on marriage and gender? What do you believe about homosexuality, and how does that affect your counseling approach? Do you see the Bible as the final authority in your practice? These questions will help you determine if a counselor aligns with your faith and values before diving deeper into the therapeutic process. When we discover that our child has embraced an LGBTQ identity, it can feel like a tidal wave that shakes the very foundation of our family dynamics. It's easy to overlook the other important relationships in our lives—especially our marriage. In this powerful episode, Tony and Alisa DiLorenzo join host Melinda Patrick to discuss the crucial steps couples can take to preserve their relationship with each other while navigating this difficult season. One of the most impactful takeaways from this episode is the reminder that "If couples don't take care of their marriage, then there will need to be two rescues: not just the rescue of the child, but the rescue of the couple." This quote serves as a powerful warning to couples that the well-being of their marriage is just as important as their child's emotional health. In this episode, you'll learn how to: Maintain closeness and connection with your spouse Take actionable steps forward if you feel stuck in your relationships Honor your spouse during seasons of grief Pray together as a couple in times of uncertainty Lighten the heaviness of difficult circumstances and rediscover joy Whether you're navigating changes in your family or simply seeking ways to strengthen your relationship, this episode offers valuable insights on maintaining balance and emotional well-being during challenging times. We have this room in our home that I affectionately call the gathering room. It rests above our garage and for many years it was a great connecting place with family and friends. In fact that is the original intent of the room. A gathering place for family and friends. A place where we could hang out, play games, watch a movie and relax. A place where we could enjoy laughter and long late-night talks with our children and one day grandchildren. And, that is how the room was for a many years. But overtime, the room became a place to stash and hide things away in a hurry when company came. Which eventually turned into a place where I would store items I didn't know what to do with - always with the mind set: One day I will take the time to get this sorted back out and cleaned up. But …the time didn't come and I have continued living my life while steadily stashing away items in the bonus room like a squirrel packs his nest for winter. Our hearts can be the same way. In this episode, I share with you 3 things I learned on this decluttering journey that will also help us declutter our hearts and set us up for relational wins in 2025. I also share two ways to maintain a clean room and a clean heart along with 3 questions you can ask yourself as you declutter: How well has this attitude, thought, or behavior worked for me? Does this bring me joy in life? Do I want my children to have to deal with this? If you are decluttering a room or your heart this year, let me know. I would love to cheer you on and prayer for you. Send me an email: melinda@melindapatrick.org Also, please share this episode with someone else who may need to be encouraged. Let's start 2025 off with decluttered hearts!

Embracing Your Season: Raising Littles and Understanding Teens with Paige Clingenpeel
In 2011, Melinda Patrick's daughter came to her and confessed that she was experiencing same-sex attraction. Melinda, an avid follower of Jesus and an active member of her church community was completely caught off-guard, and, admittedly, didn't handle it well. On today's episode, Paige has a raw and honest conversation with Melinda about her ongoing journey with her daughter - and how God in His goodness has worked to transform Melinda's heart - so she can love her daughter well and surrender her to Him. This is a truly powerful and timely conversation for any parent, family member, friend of a parent, or member of the church to learn from. Melinda's book, The Daring Rescue, is a hope-filled memoir pointing us back to the true pursuer and molder of our hearts. Paige's Takeaways:If your child shares something secret with you, don't panic!1st point of conversation should always be: Thank you for sharing that with me. I'm sure it was so hard to let me know what was going on with you.2nd point of conversation: I am so sorry that you have been struggling with this as long as you have and haven't felt comfortable coming to tell me. The topic of conversation can be secondary. Especially if it has deviated from your convictions. The Ministry of PresenceSometimes our kids just need us to be with them, to listen to them. Have you raised your children in the church and tried to model and encourage a relationship with Christ, just to have them turn and go the opposite direction in life? On this week's episode, Alex has special guest Melinda Patrick share the journey to writing her book, The Daring Rescue: Joining Jesus Christ in His Pursuit of Your LGBTQ-Identified Child's Heart. Melinda's vulnerable and humbling experience will encourage any listener on pursuing your LGBTQ-identified child in a Biblical, loving manner, without compromising your beliefs This is an insightful and hope-filled conversation you won't want to miss.Scriptures:Proverbs 22:6John 10:10GenesisMark 9:26John 10:35Alex McFarland WebsiteAsk Alex OnlineVoting with a Biblical WorldviewSpeaking EventsBook AlexDonateAlex McFarland MinistriesPO Box 10231 Greensboro, NC 274041-877-937-4631 (1-877-YES-GOD1)Guest Information:Melinda Patrick WebsiteBook: The Daring Rescue: Joining Jesus Christ in His Pursuit of Your LGBTQ-Identified Child's HeartSend us a text
Points of Discussion: Melinda emphasizes the importance of prayer and surrender to God, highlighting that your LGBTQ identified child's same-sex attraction itself isn't a sin, but acting on it is, and her main prayer is for her daughter's holiness rather than heterosexuality. Melinda emphasizes that a parent's responsibility is to love, pray for, and support their child, but not to control or fix them, as transformation is God's role. The conversation covers practical steps for parents, such as setting boundaries with love, having open and honest conversations, and not compromising biblical truths, while still showing unconditional love and support to their children. Melinda shares her personal experiences and the transformation in her relationship with her daughter, advocating for the pursuit of Jesus and intimate prayer as key elements in walking this difficult journey. The show notes include resources, as well as Melinda's links where you can purchase her book, sign up for her newsletter, follow her podcast etc. If you sign up for her newsletter you can find out where she's speaking next and the various events that are available for parents dealing with similar situations. Podcast Intro: My guest Melinda Patrick is multi-talented on many levels. She is a podcast host of two podcasts, one of which is The Bridge Between Us: Loving Your LGBTQ Identified Child Without Compromising Truth. Melinda is a writer, an international speaker and she recently added author to her writing credentials in early 2024 when she published, The Daring Rescue: Joining Jesus Christ in His Pursuit of Your LGBTQ Identified Child's Heart. What I believe makes Melinda successful at connecting with people and loving them well is her passion to love Christ first and foremost; to discover His heart and to willingly make her own heart transparent so that the Lord can write His love story with her, onto/into her own heart. I'm going to try and make this intro super short because I want to get right into all the information and insight that Melinda has to share but I am excited about everything she shared so hopefully I can contain myself. May you have ears to hear all that the Holy Spirit shares through her. Listen to this episode a couple of times because you don't want to miss anything. From practical advice, deep wisdom, a parent's insight, knowledge of how to navigate this sensitive topic with God, you simply do not want to miss anything. Here are just a few of the questions she addressed: What is the parent's responsibility? Is it our job, the parent's job, to save our child? Is there any hope for relationship if our child doesn't want to be saved? What is the difference between desiring our child to change vs our child being transformed? How do we navigate hard conversations? Melinda says we need to define some words as the basis of hard conversations. I think we can all agree that in this particular time and culture, words have been hijacked and they no longer mean what they used to mean. My biggest take away from our conversation was personal. I loved how her experience of allowing God to challenge her heart, her fears and her pride was in line with what I am discovering about the Lord myself. Taking our emotions, fears, lie based thinking and all the ways we feel/believe that God should/would/could answer our prayers and we pause. We bring Him our pain and our hard questions, expose what our heart believes, we get real about our motives with the One who thoroughly knows these things about us. God's not afraid of our emotions. He gave us emotions and I personally believe they also serve as an alarm system of sorts. Emotions let us know when we need to engage the heart of God for His truth and healing. In 2 Corinthians 10:5, the word says, "We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” In short, we bring God our pain and we allow Him to speak His truth/His Word into that pain and it redefines what we've built our false belief system on. I can't express to you the level of freedom, peace, truth, love that is available to you through this process of trusting God with our pain. Actually, here's a perfect example. Let's jump into my conversation with Melinda! What you see, in this case what you hear, is what you get in real life with her. Listen in and be encouraged by her passion for the things of God because He's doing a deep revelatory work in this woman's heart and you get to glean the wisdom. Biblically parenting a child who struggles in their sexuality requires resting on a bedrock foundation of truth while always operating in a spirit of love, humility, and surrender to Christ. We must never deny God's truth, but a child struggling in this area must first be completely secure in their parents' unconditional love. Focusing on the relationship is paramount. That relationship is secured by practicing unconditional love, the same love that God gives to us. What can parents do to build a strong relationship with a child struggling in their sexuality? Incorporate this guidance: *Commend your child's courage for sharing their struggle with you. *Express your unconditional love for your child. Say, “There is nothing you can think, say, or do that will change my love for you. I love you unconditionally, and so does God.” *Pray fervently. Use the Word of God to pray over your child daily. (Find Scriptures to pray over you child HERE.) *Listen. Listen. And when you're done listening to your child.… listen some more. *Humbly hold fast to Biblical truth on sexuality. *Speak truth when prompted by the Holy Spirit. Don't turn every conversation into a sermon. Instead, rely on the Holy Spirit's guidance in your communication. *Walk in HUMILITY. The LGBTQ community has adopted PRIDE as their virtue, so we must walk in the opposite spirit. *Model a surrendered life for your child. *Model repentance for your child. You won't parent your child perfectly, so when you mess up, tell them you are wrong and ask for forgiveness. *Forgive yourself for your parenting mistakes and allow God to redeem them. Catherine's guest in this episode has been ministering to parents of children in the LGBTQ community for many years because she is one. A Christian can struggle with any number of attractions or temptations, including same sex desire and gender confusion. But should a Christian consider that struggle to be part of their identity? Should who we are attracted to or how we feel about our bodies be central to our being? Is our sexuality an immutable characteristic like our race or ethnicity? In other words, should we should claim our sexuality as part of our essence? And if we do, what are the ramifications of this conclusion theologically and practically? Christopher Yuan, author of Holy Sexuality and the Gospel, lived for many years as a gay man. He addresses the issue of our Christian identity very clearly saying: “If I were to identify as a gay Christian, I would be trying to resuscitate my dead man. We should never put our identity in our sin nature or in our flesh. Sin is never meant to be sanctified. It is meant to be mortified.” Who we are attracted to is part of our experience as human beings here on earth. So is how we feel about our bodies. So are our significant roles—husband, wife, father, mother, son, daughter, friend. So is what we do—teacher, doctor, business owner, plumber … fill in the blank. So is what we are afflicted with: depression, anxiety, disease, addiction, abuse. Those are all, sadly, a part of our fallen human experience. But that is not who we are. As Christians, we must identify ourselves as sons and daughters of the most-high God. That is our identity. We must lay every other label down and brand ourselves with Christ. Then and only then can we walk in freedom. Joining Catherine again to discuss the central topic of identity in the Christian life is Melinda Patrick, host of The Bridge Between Us Podcast: Loving Your LGBTQ Identified Child While Not Compromising Truth. As a mother of a same-sex attracted daughter who has embraced an LGBTQ identity and union, Melinda considers identity to be a central component to every Believer's spiritual journey. To overcome any temptation or obstacle, we must have our identity firmly rooted in Christ. Statistics show that one in five Gen Z children are identifying somewhere on the LGBTQ spectrum. One in five. Parents must realize that all of our children are dealing with this issue, because even if our kids aren't personally struggling in their sexuality, their friends are. This issue affects every parent and every child. The church needs to have a loving and truthful approach for families facing this issue. One of the largest and most influential churches in the United States, North Point Community Church, pastored by one of the most influential ministers in the world, Andy Stanley, just went on the record telling us about his church's approach. Stanley's message, along with the Unconditional Conference for parents of LGBTQ identifying children held at North Point, signify a substantial departure from where the evangelical church has stood on this issue. Does Stanley have the right approach? Is it Biblical? Should we be concerned? Catherine's guest in this episode has been ministering to parents of children in the LGBTQ community for many years because she is one. As a mother of a same-sex attracted daughter who has embraced an LGBTQ identity and union, Melinda Patrick is precisely the kind of parent that the Unconditional Conference was trying to reach. But she has deep concerns about this conference and Stanley's teaching. Rebecca McLaughlin and Amber discuss the value of intellectual curiosity for the Christian, engaging secular literature to enrich one's belief in Jesus, sexual ethics in our post Christian world, and more. Questions Discussed During Intellects Are Christians Too: (3:50) You've said, "My parents gave me such a strong sense growing up that Christians should be the most intellectually curious people in town. I was not in any way raised with the anti intellectualism that can be characteristic of American evangelicalism..." Will you expound on that a little bit and why you have found that to be crucial to your faith when people do object to it? (11:20) Something I appreciate about your work as an Apologist is the humility with which you engage difficult questions of the faith. It is a tone that is often missing in the world of Christian apologetics. What's it like to engage in the world of apologetics with more of a humble heart toward the difficult topics? (17:51) How do you encourage Christians to engage thoughtfully on the topic, of purity, same sex attraction, etc. in our current culture? (29:52) What did you hope the reader would take away from one of your more recent books, Jesus Through the Eyes of Women? (33:30) Why do you believe engaging in secular stories, as well as the Bible, enriches your belief in Jesus vs. leading you astray? (37:59) Let's close with, outside of God's Word, what are some books/authors/fellow Christians who have helped shape you into the follower of Jesus you are today? SHOW NOTES cont. In 2007, Melinda Patrick found herself going through a divorce that she didn't want. Thinking she had done #allthethings a good, Christian wife was “supposed” to do, she realized that this was an example of mankind's free will being exercised. The day after her family (they had a 13 yr-old and 16-yr-old) moved into the home she and her husband had designed and built themselves, he walked out. Reeling, she remembers thinking “I don't understand.” Melinda's story is both heartbreaking and mesmerizing; alternately filled with pain and promise. Throughout the process of her divorce, one piece of Scripture was especially life-giving: "The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life." I'm excited to share Melinda Patrick's story with you! After 20 years of marriage her husband left her and her two teenage children. She did all she could to restore her marriage, but eventually God simply asked her to surrender. 3 long years of divorce court brought sweet intimacy with Jesus, and taught Melinda just how deeply she could trust God. Her story has a twist at the end, which I'm not going to give away, but join us to hear how God blessed the end of this story. We are glad you are here. Melinda Patrick - Christian Mom Whose Child has Same Sex Attraction My guest, Melinda Patrick, is a Christian whose daughter came to her in 2011 saying she has same-sex attraction. Melinda, a devoted Christian for many years, was teaching women's Bible studies on Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings, was highly involved in the women's ministry team on a rather large church, and she ran a ministry in her own home. I was interested in this conversation for several reasons, two of which the church struggles with being in the world and not of the world. And Christians, including myself, have a hard time speaking truth in love. How do we truly love like Christ and yet not compromise the truth in the process? And why are we making it so hard? I wanted to hear from the heart of a mother, a Christian mother, who can't simply throw scripture around to make herself feel better or who has some distance on the particular topic of same-sex attraction, a mom who loves her daughter dearly and would lay down her life for her without hesitation, but whose heart also knows that to love as Christ is to choose the purest form of the highest love. Having a child herself who has been involved in Same-Sex Attraction (SSA) for more than 9 years, Melinda is all too familiar with the grief and loss of hope this can bring to a family. By way of her own healing and the healing of her relationship with her daughter, she is now passionate about offering the same hope to other parents and family members. Through her speaking, podcasting, and writing, God is using Melinda to touch the hearts of parents with the healing power of His Word. She has a great desire to lead other parents into a joyful relationship with the God who has been so faithful to honor His Word in her life. Her passion is to inspire and equip others to bear fruit in every season of life, even the most painful. On the south side of Atlanta, Georgia, is where you will find Melinda and her husband, Ron. Her kitchen is notorious for impromptu dance parties, and her porch is loved for long talks, slow swinging, and sweet tea. The outdoors is where she loves to spend most of her time reading, hiking, and enjoying lazy lake days.
