Photo by Nick Fewings on Unsplash Published 15 Jun 2026 It’s an all-Brits episode, as Andy welcomes Ian “epredator” Hughes back to the show as co-host, while both Michaels are away. We take a dive into some recent and current triple-A games as Ian talks through many hours of playtime in Crimson Desert, Forza Horizon 6, and 007 First Light. Although the new open-world Forza Horizon is set in Japan, Andy and Ian enjoy noting that these are games from UK-based studios or with British elements (like the legendary James Bond). Along the way, they talk about a WWDC video shared by Michael Rowe, which brings foveated streaming to the Vision Pro headset, although Ian notes that Varjo has been in this space for several years already. There’s a second round of gaming conversations that includes the latest XBox Games Showcase, featuring an older game (Sea of Thieves) from another British studio, and a yet-to-be-released game (Fable) with British voice talent and acting, that was also originally from the UK. There’s also a quick nod to an easter egg in the latest LEGO Batman game. The episode wraps up with a discussion of the recently fully-funded Kickstarter for the Virtual Worlds Museum, that we last talked about in episode 555. Ian mentions some of the recent video content that has been released by the project. Many thanks to Ian for joining the show this week, bringing a deep focus on games and virtual worlds! Andy, Michael and Michael get things started with an appreciation of Andy's work to migrate the Games at Work hosting site to a new service in uninterrupted fashion for our listeners.  Next, a new piece of open source hardware that Andy's purchased, the Ploopy The Bean.  After the cohosts wax poetic on the awesome sauce that is the TrackPoint, they turn their attention to The Guild.  Felicia Day and the team from The Guild are planning to launch a movie.  Andy, Michael and Michael are very excited about this!   Switching to AI, and all of the recent stories about how university commencement audiences have been booing speakers extolling the virtues of AI, the team considers Woz's take on AI being “Actual Intelligence”.  This reference is cheered and not booed.  Continuing on the theme, the cohosts discuss a recent play by Spotify of providing an authentication for podcasts recorded by actual humans (with actual intelligence).  This spurs a lively conversation on what that validation might entail, and what it means, especially given the prevalence of AI generated audio content.   The team wraps up the show with a couple of virtual museums – one shared by friend of the show Ian Hughes – the Virtual Worlds Museum.  The cohosts all agree that Ian would make a fantastic spokesperson for this museum.  The other is a virtual OS museum. Finally, Andy shares a tremendous social networking graph that traces letters sent between 285 cities during the years from 1363 to 1412,  Check it out, and give a listen to the song from Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812 for how the Russians would write letters in the links below. Photo by Shannon Potter on Unsplash Published 4 May 2026 e552 with Andy, Michael and Michael – stories and discussion on AI, life on Mars, life of the Vision Pro, retro C64s and a whole lot more! Andy, Michael and Michael get things started with a brace of AI articles dealing with with a wide variety of topics.  First up is Meta's use of employee activities on their corporate computers to train their AI models.  Then, a discussion on the SpaceX and Cursor business deal.  Next, a conversation on a breach to access the Claude Mythos model.  Interspersed with these is a discovery by NASA's Curiosity rover finding organic molecules on Mars. With a number of articles claiming, and paraphrasing here, that the Vision Pro is bereft of life, shuffled up its mortal coil and joined the choir invisible, Michael Rowe shares his perspective on the subject.  His says his Vision Pro is not an Ex-Vision Pro. The cohosts go retro – as they are wont to do – with a flock of posts about all things Commodore.  Links below if you are curious and want to see what these devices look like. While no Artemis II image for this week's episode, do check out the minifigs.me offering of the crew, along with the jar of “Studella” in the links below.  There are a couple of additional bonus links that the cohosts didn't have time to include in the episode that prove that we can have nice things. It's Monday, September 29th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Muslim crowd demands Indonesian church halts worship A Muslim crowd near Jakarta, Indonesia demanded a Christian congregation suspend worship on Sunday, September 21st, reports Morning Star News. In Tangerang at least 20 Muslims arrived at the Indonesian Bethel Church at 9:00 a.m., an hour before the congregation was to begin worship in a shophouse, a video recording shows. The Muslims demanded a halt to all worship until the church obtains all relevant permits. Slovakia bans surrogacy and homosexual adoption, recognize only two sexes Last Friday, the nation of Slovakia rejected European Union legislation by amending its constitution to enshrine recognition of only two sexes, ban the practice of surrogacy, and restrict adoption to heterosexual married couples, reports LifeSiteNews.com. Genesis 2:24 says, "Therefore, a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” Gunman kills two and injures eight at Mormon place of worship A gunman opened fire inside a Michigan Mormon place of worship, 60 miles northwest of Detroit, at 10:25am ET during the Sunday service, killing two people and injuring eight. He then set the building ablaze, before police shot and killed him, reports ABC News. Police Chief William Renye said hundreds of people were inside the building in Grand Blanc Township when a 40-year-old man rammed his vehicle into the front door, then exited the vehicle, and started shooting.  The gunman has been identified as Thomas Jacob Sanford, reports NBC News. The suspect is believed to have set the building on fire which caused a five-alarm blaze that caused a partial collapse of the structure. Flames and smoke could be seen for hours before the blaze was put out. Investigators wonder whether the shooting is connected with the death of the oldest-ever president of Latter-day Saints, Russell Nelson, who died at the age of 101 the day before. The next Mormon president is expected to be 93-year-old Dallin Oaks, per Mormon protocol. Christian pastor denied access to Dallas airport chapel A Christian pastor was denied access to the chapel at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport by a Muslim cleric, reports Christian talk host Todd Starnes. Tom Ascol, a prominent Southern Baptist pastor, wrote on social media that he had been in Dallas to visit the grieving family of Voddie Baucham, a renowned pastor and scholar.  Ascol said that he heard an announcement inviting passengers to visit the Meadows Chapel for a prayer service. The announcement included the phrase “all are welcome.” Ascol wrote on X, “With broken heart I went hoping maybe Scripture would at least be read. Instead, I found this & was denied access.”  The Baptist pastor posted a photograph of Muslims inside the chapel kneeling on prayer rugs. The pastor said he was physically blocked from entering the room. He explained, “They blocked my way in the inner room.  A man who had offered a loud prayer, not the Imam, said I could come in if I took my shoes off. I refused.” Church attendance rising after Kirk's murder, particularly among youth Some pastors have reported seeing an increase in church attendance following the assassination of Charlie Kirk, the conservative Christian founder of Turning Point USA, particularly among young adults, some of whom haven't attended a worship service in years, reports The Christian Post. JP De Gance, the founder and president of Communio, a ministry that helps churches evangelize better and expand their outreach capacities, believes that Kirk's message has inspired many young people to experience the Christian faith through a church community.  He said, “[There has been] a lot of anecdotal feedback from churches in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, and Douglas County, Colorado, reporting that they've seen an increase [in attendance] over the last two Sundays." Communio, which serves around 400 churches nationwide, has received reports of increased attendance from various religious denominations. Speculating on why Kirk's death, which was headline news worldwide, might have been the driving force to get young people to attend church, De Gance said that perhaps some began to take stock of their lives after hearing that someone within their age range had died a violent death. De Gance believes that more young people are coming to know who Charlie Kirk was and what he had to say about marriage, family and living for Christ, beliefs that reportedly were the reason why Tyler Robinson targeted him.  He said, “I think that causes a level of introspection. I think that causes people to ask, ‘What am I living for right now?'” Why Tim Allen forgave drunk driver who killed his father And finally, in a podcast with Michael Rowe, Tim Allen, the 72-year-old former star of the Home Improvement sitcom, shared the story of his father's death in 1964. ALLEN: “My father was killed by a drunk driver when I was 11 years old. Luckily, he was the only one killed, but he died in my mother's lap. My other two brothers were thrown around the car. A lot of kids were hurt.” Tim Allen's father had been driving home from a Colorado football game with six children in the vehicle along with his wife.  Tim was not in the car that day.  The drunk driver swerved across I-70, went through a median, and hit the car. Tim explained what his uncle told him. ALLEN: “And then I'm walking down to my house, knowing something terrible had happened. I get to the house, there's police, and my uncle was there and said, ‘Man up. You know, your mom needs you right now. So, no crying, none of that.” ROWE: “How old are you this point?” ALLEN: “Eleven. He was a great dad, love of my life. I said, ‘This doesn't make any sense. I don't like this.' And everybody's answer was, ‘He's in a better place.' The pain of it never stopped. The discomfort of it. That whole process started me on asking questions. Generally, getting no answers.” Tim Allen added, "Every single thing in my life changed. I knew it the moment he was dead, and it was not for four hours that I found out. I've hated November since then.”  On Thursday, September 24, he revealed that — after watching Charlie Kirk's widow, Erika Kirk, forgive her husband's killer on September 21st — he decided to do the same for the drunk driver who killed his father, reports People Magazine. Allen wrote on X, "When Erika Kirk spoke the words on the man who killed her husband [Charlie]: 'That man… that young man… I forgive him.' That moment deeply affected me. I have struggled for over 60 years to forgive the man who killed my Dad. I will say those words now as I type: 'I forgive the man who killed my father.'" Ephesians 4:32 commands, “Forgive one another, even as God, in Christ, forgave you.” Indeed, Erika Kirk said, “My husband, Charlie, he wanted to save young men, just like the one who took his life."   Listen to the unforgettable moment when Erika forgave her husband's assassin at the Memorial on September 21st held at State Farm Arena in Phoenix, Arizona, just 11 days after his assassination. ERIKA KIRK:  “On the cross, our Savior said, ‘Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.'  (Luke 23:34) “That man, [Tyler Robinson], I forgive him. (applause as she wept) I forgive him because it was what Christ did, and it's what Charlie would do. The answer to hate is not hate. The answer, we know from the Gospel, is love, and always love. Love for our enemies and love for those who persecute us.” Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old man now being held at the Utah County Jail without bail, has been accused of the crime. If found guilty, the prosecutor has called for the death penalty. Modern-day Germany was at a turning point in the Napoleonic period, with the French Revolutionary Wars prompting an enormous shake-up in which its various small-scale secular and ecclesiastical entities were gobbled up by bigger states. The change marked something of a no-going-back point for the Austrian-led Holy Roman Empire, and its historical resonances continue to this day - as regular listener and contributor Hans-Karl Weiss describes in this episode. He got to put his points to our interviewee, Dr Michael Rowe of King's College London, who was able to explain why this period was so important. This bonus episode will be followed by a segment in ep45 on the Reichsdeputationhauptschluss, the key moment when the negotiations about the redrawing of the political map east of the Rhine was determined.

Image by Michael Rowe with DiffusionBee, December 2023 Published 1 January 2024 Andy and Michael R are back while Michael M is away - and have a fantastic show on the DNA of 2023 in games. This episode starts with a stroll down the beginnings of Dungeons and Dragons, with Michael R sharing a couple of links from the Internet Archive.  He found a veritable treasure trove of documents, rulebooks and more.  A couple of which are in the show notes below.  Michael R noted that AD&D was not only about dungeons and dragons, with the same rules and mechanics applied to other sci-fi genres.  An additional example of the AD&D system was used by the RPG game Toon.   Turning next to PC (personal computer) based games, and moving forward a bit in time, Andy and Michael R start with games that were sold and distributed via (gasp!) physical media!   No cloud based games in this selection, though many of them are now available via the web and can be experienced (sort of) with modern hardware.  Andy comments that he and Michael are of the cohort that experienced the transition from analog to digital, and that experience will never be repeated because it just can't.  Michael R shares his enthusiasm in playing Baldur's Gate 3, exclaiming that he now understands why everyone is so drawn in by it.  With 108 gig of content, it's no surprise that the graphics and gameplay are such high quality.  Of course no discussion of games would be complete without World of Warcraft.   The co-hosts also discuss several NPC (non personal computer) games such as those on the Playdate, and a large number of games on Steam.  Vote for your favorite Steam Deck games on The 2023 Steam Awards - by 2 Jan 2024 10am Pacific.  One of Andy's particular favorites is Dave the Diver. Andy and Michael close out the last episode recorded in 2023 with the hope that there will be many unique and valuable experiences in VR and AR beyond Beat Saber. Michael M was also "playing a game” on the evening of 29 Dec — enjoying time in the Smith Center while the university students are away, and looking forward to hoisting up the sousaphone once more to play for the women's basketball team on New Year's Eve closing out the #JordanYear. In this episode, Michael Rowe talks about space as a metaphor for learning and asks if it's still a useful way for us to think about learning and teaching design. Spatial metaphors encourage a certain vocabulary that informs our cognitive frameworks, which possibly limits creative approaches to learning and teaching. Michael asks if other metaphors for learning might get us closer to designing learning experiences that are more aligned with what we care about.

Saluton, estas mi Tyson Saner. Welcome to Succotash Shut-In — I am your every-other week host bringing you this episode which is enumerated #246. Last week my co-host and every-other-week show-host Marc Hershon brought you episode @245 which was a "Chats" episode featuring a conversation with comedian and comedy writer for television, Michael Rowe. It's an fun episode that I recommend you listen to by going to our homesite at www.succotashshow.com…of course if you are listening to this on a podcast service of some other kind such as Apple or Google Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, the Laughable app, iHeart Radio, or even YouTube, you should most definitely be able to listen to it and other episodes that way. If this is your first time here, thank you for listening. Aside from chats with notably interesting folks, episodes of Succotash have been known to feature clips of soundcasts from all over the English-speaking parts of the world. This episode is one of those types of episodes. I've got clips from the soundcasts The Brendan Fraser Podcast, Fascination Street, and The Bill Bert Podcast. I've also got a seasonally appropriate bit of advertising for the new Spring Breakers from our longtime sponsor Henderson's Pants for you. So, without further ado, let's get to the clips shall we? CLIPS The Bill Bert Podcas‪t‬ In their Episode 50 Bill Burr and Bert Kreischer prattle about shrooms, the royal family, and surf dreams. Our clip contains the beginning of the aformentioned shroom-prattling... Fascination Stree‪t‬ Hosted by Steve Owens, this soundcast introduces us to Fascinating People with Fascinating Stories. On March 14th, 2021, his guest is John Sylvain (Nooner) and a Game Creator (You Know It!‪) In our clip clip, the game You Know It! is discussed as well as Nooner which has been clipped on this program a few times in the almost 10 years that both that show and THIS show, Succotash have been in existence. The Brendan Fraser Podcas‪t‬ Hosts Karla and Daniel talk anything and everything Brendan Fraser. And in their Epi 20, entitled "Lemmy or God‪?‬", they've gotten around to discussing the movie Airheads.  In this clip the duo breakdown elements of the plot of the movie with some observations about it's place in comedy history and its cult-film status. That's what's in this week's installment. In April, Succotash will be celebrating 10 years of soundcasting. It's a little hard for me to believe it has been an entire decade. Maybe it is because my sense of time is somewhat more acute as I scrape the underside of 50…with three years to go admittedly but really, it feels close enough to me…and it only gets closer with every passing moment. I started listening to podcasts around 2008 and have been participating or interacting with them in various ways since then. In October, my friend Hunter Block and I will have been creating our own soundcast, one Anti Social Show, for 5 years…incidentally, you can find links to that show and pretty much everything I currently have published sound or videowise at www.tysonsaner.com… This last year was dominated by the COVID-19 pandemic and this year has pretty much continued to be. Vaccines are finally available tho' so…that's a good thing. Thank you again for listening, tune in next week for Marc Hershon's episode 247, wear a mask, wash your hands, be decent to each other, and if you like the show's format and think other folks might also…please pass the Succotash! — Tyson Saner

I don’t want to seem overly eager to get the next dose over and done with, but my wife and I ARE now starting to plan a getaway to Hawaii just to get the hell outta town for the first time in over a year. Find it on Apple or Google Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, the Laughable app, iHeart Radio, YouTube, or right on our very own homesite, SuccotashShow.com. I have no clips for you this week but, instead, a visit with Michael Rowe, who started out as a standup comedian but who went on to become a comedy writer and producer for TV. Mike’s been nominated for a half dozen Emmy Awards for his work on Futurama and Family Guy – and he even took one home. He also got a WEBBY Award for his own animated series, The Paranormal Action Squad. Mike’s one of those guys with long roots in comedy that I should know – we have tons of friends in common. In fact, I was turned onto Mike by Jon Manfrellotti, a friend and comic who was on Succotash a decade ago – WAY back in Episode 16! Mike has got a new book coming out — a memoir — called It’s A Funny Thing: How the Professional Comedy Business Made me Fat and Bald. This chat was actually recorded a couple of weeks ago and I have now finished It’s A Funny Thing. It’s available at Amazon for sure, BearManer Media, and we have links up at the blog entry for this episode at SuccotashShow.com. Tyson will be with you next week for Episode 246 and I’ll be back the week after that. In the meantime, keep your nose clean, your feel wiped, your teeth brushed, your hands washed, and your faced covered while you socially distance. And, if anyone asked if you’ve heard anything good lately, please do not hesitate to pass the Succotash. — Marc Hershon

The sad story of the hunt for the lone gunman Raoul Moat had many of the ingredients of classic crime fiction: a countryside location; an outsider against the law and an extraordinary set of tragic circumstances that unfolded over time. In this edition of Thinking Allowed Laurie Taylor speaks to Michael Rowe, a criminologist at the centre of the crisis. He gave countless media interviews at the time and has now conducted a study of how 24 hour news media used the rubric of crime fiction to present events in a gripping way. He argues, however, that it was a method in which truth and understanding seem to have been amongst the victims. Also on the programme Prabha Kotiswaran discusses her ethnographic study of the daily and nightly life of prostitutes in two of India's cities.Producer: Charlie Taylor.
