In a heartwarming and insightful episode, Reading With Your Kids host Jed Doherty explores the incredible ways books can heal, support, and strengthen family bonds. The conversation dives deep into two groundbreaking resources that are changing how families approach reading and mental health. First up is Michelle Sherman's powerful book "I Am Not Alone," a game-changing guide for teens navigating the challenges of having a parent struggling with mental health. Sherman reveals a shocking statistic: about 20% of young people live with a parent experiencing mental health issues. Her book fills a critical gap, offering support, understanding, and practical strategies for teens who often feel invisible and alone. The episode then shifts to the Mother Daughter Book Club Guide, created by sisters Stefanie Hohl and Meghan Voss. This innovative resource transforms reading from a solitary activity into a dynamic, fun family experience. With 12 carefully curated books and interactive discussion guides, the book helps parents and children connect on a deeper level, making reading an adventure rather than a chore. Meghan Voss, an education expert, highlights the incredible benefits of reading together. Beyond just literacy, shared reading builds critical thinking skills, creates lasting memories, and helps children develop emotional intelligence. The guide offers flexible options for families, from intimate home book clubs to neighborhood reading groups. The conversation also touches on the ABC See Here Do reading program, which uses creative movement to teach reading skills, addressing the sobering fact that 70% of kids struggle with reading by fourth grade. Whether you're a parent looking to strengthen family bonds, a teacher seeking innovative literacy tools, or someone interested in mental health support for teens, this episode offers practical, heartwarming insights. It's a powerful reminder that books are more than just words on a page – they're bridges that connect us, heal us, and help us understand each other. Hey Warriors Unmasked family! Chuck Thuss here, bringing you a truly meaningful episode that's close to my heart. In Episode 170, I had the honor of sitting down with Dr. Michelle Sherman and her mom, Deanne Sherman, two incredible women who are shining a much-needed light on an often-overlooked group: the supporters. Whether you're a spouse, sibling, friend, or child of someone managing mental health challenges or trauma, this episode is packed with insights, tools, and encouragement just for you. Dr. Sherman, a clinical psychologist with over 30 years of experience, and Deanne, a mental health advocate and teacher, share their wealth of knowledge and personal stories about how to navigate the complex role of supporting someone who is struggling. From the emotional toll it can take to the importance of self-care, their conversation is a game-changer for anyone who has ever felt overwhelmed, lonely, or burnt out while caring for someone they love. Key Takeaways from the Episode: Recognizing the Caregiver's Role: Often, those who support loved ones with mental health challenges feel invisible. Dr. Sherman and Deanne emphasize the importance of seeing and honoring the sacrifices these caregivers make. Self-Care is Essential, Not Optional: As Deanne beautifully states, taking care of yourself isn't a luxury—it's a necessity. Whether it's taking five minutes to breathe, delegating responsibilities, or finding a community of support, self-care is the foundation of being able to help others. Advocating for Support: Caregivers often feel guilty about asking for help, but Dr. Sherman reminds us that we can't pour from an empty cup. Whether it's leaning on a friend, joining a support group, or simply taking time for yourself, these small steps make a big difference. The Stigma Around Mental Illness: Michelle and Deanne also address the societal stigma that isolates both individuals managing mental illness and their families. They challenge listeners to lean in, rather than withdraw, when someone in their circle is struggling. Tools and Resources for Caregivers The Shermans recently co-authored two incredible books: Loving Someone with a Mental Illness or History of Trauma: Skills, Hope, and Strength for Your Journey I'm Not Alone: A Teen's Guide to Living with a Parent Who's Experienced a Mental Illness or History of Trauma These books are more than just informative—they're interactive guides packed with reflection exercises, practical skills, and stories from people who've been there. Whether you're an adult or a teen, you'll find actionable advice to help you navigate the challenges of supporting someone with mental health issues while maintaining your own well-being. You can find their books at Seeds of Hope Books or on Amazon. A Message to Caregivers One of the most powerful takeaways from this episode is the reminder that caregivers matter too. Dr. Sherman and Deanne's mantra, “We see you, we hear you, and we're with you,” resonates deeply. If you've ever felt alone in your journey, know that there is a community of people who understand and want to support you. Michelle Sherman: Why the Most Successful Leaders Combine Resilience with Imagination

The Empathy Edge

Imagination and resilience are the hallmarks of successful leaders, those who can envision the goal before they even know exactly how to get there, and those who can bounce back and learn from failure rather than let it discourage them. Imagination and resilience are what we need, now more than ever, to create a more peaceful, harmonious world. That's how we'll tap into new ideas for how to work, collaborate, and perform. Today, my guest, Michelle Sherman, and I talk about the role of imagination and resilience in creating empathy. We discuss how most innovative leaders imagine the outcome they want before anyone even thinks it's possible. We discuss cognitive replenishment and the role it plays in original thinking - and in coping with modern life challenges., and how original thinking is the result of intentional choices on a daily basis. Finally, we discuss how positive imagination is a skillset you can master, through small decisions you make every day. Key Takeaways:Empathy and imagination go hand in hand because people need to know that when they give their best, it is valued. In order to imagine possibilities, the first step is cognitive replenishment so that you can be a better thinker of divergent thinking and become more optimistic naturally. We need to think in a new way to solve the problems we have been solving for thousands of years. We created the models, we can change them and think about things in a different way. What we lack is not goodness, what we usually lack is imagination. "If you want to live an authentic life, be yourself. Be an original thinker, and you will be a much happier, healthier cell in the body of humankind. Only good can come of that." —  Michelle Sherman About Michelle Sherman:Michelle Sherman, Transformational Leadership Coach & Founder, VAST InstituteRenaissance woman. Do you have to choose between a successful corporate career and humanitarian work? Or can they live in harmony? Today's guest proves that you can not only do both, but that you can engage your team and such work can make you a better, more empathetic leader! It's a beautiful cycle and one I'm thrilled to talk about with Woodson Martin. Today, Woodson shares how he achieves that balance, and offers advice on how you can do both as well. We talk about how his community work has benefited him as a leader, helped engage his team, and how he bounces back and forth between these different worlds. He also shares great stories about how his tech teams have been able to use their unique talents to solve non-profit challenges, hopefully sparking some ideas for you! Key Takeaways:It doesn't require travelling the world to do humanitarian work. There is a lot of need for it within the borders of your own country. Any kind of change requires courage. If you don't ask, you will never know what kind of reaction you will get.Seeing leaders engage in humanitarian work frees employees to feel that they can, too. It also helps to build relationships, not only with your employees, but with your customers and partners. Values create value. Committing yourself, your company, and your employees to giving back to your community is an investment in your business.  "Do not underestimate the power of giving back and developing a corporate commitment to do that." —  Woodson Martin About Woodson Martin:Woodson Martin + EVP & GM, Salesforce AppExchangeWoodson has been with Salesforce for over 15 years, and has had the opportunity to wear many hats in roles ranging from marketing, including serving as CMO of Marketing Cloud, to recruiting. Our guests today are Michelle Sherman, RPh, who is a member of the Pharmacy Podcast Network & has a podcast called the "Conscious Pharmacist Podcast" & Jay Holloway PharmD, returning for a second time to the Pharmacy Podcat to discuss:  References, from Pharmacy Today: https://www.pharmacytoday.org/article/S1042-0991(20)30876-8/fulltext Pharmacists Focused on LGBTQ Communities, the latest chapter of the "Transforming a Nation" podcast series.  Pharmacists need to acquire foundational knowledge about key concepts and terminologies relevant to the LGBTQ population. To provide care consistent with cultural competence and humility, pharmacists must also be aware of the diversity between and within different segments of the LGBTQ community, and the intersectionality of multiple identities that shape a person's life experiences. Furthermore, it is important to note that while various identities such as gender, sexual orientation, and gender identity intersect, one is not predictive of the other. For example, a person's gender identity does not determine their sexual orientation and the biological sex designated at birth does not define their gender identity.11Sexual orientation is a person's emotional, romantic, sexual attraction, or non-attraction to other people and is composed of three separate dimensions: behavior, identity, and desire. Some people may engage in same-sex sexual behavior but not identify as lesbian, gay, or bisexual. Similarly, a person may be sexually, romantically, or emotionally attracted to members of the same sex and choose not to be sexually active with same-sex partners. For research purposes, the terms “men who have sex with men” (MSM) and “women who have sex with women” (WSW) are often used to describe a person's sexual behavior regardless of their identity. Sex refers to a set of biological attributes primarily related to physical and physiological features. The phrase “sex assigned at birth” (SAAB) or “designated sex at birth” (DSAB) is used to describe a person's biological sex, most often, but not exclusively, based on the external appearance of genitalia at birth. Gender is a socially constructed concept used to characterize the behaviors, actions, and qualities of women and men or girls and boys. The critical flaw of an exclusive binary paradigm is that it does not account for the inherent diversity of human gender. A more expansive conceptualization of gender recognizes that each person possesses a wide range of characteristics that may or may not be consistent with the gender binary, represent a combination of male and female, or fall somewhere in between the two. Gender identity is a person's inner sense of their gender. For some people, their gender identity may not be congruent with the one typically expected based on their SAAB/DSAB. They may describe themselves in a variety of ways including, but not limited to, transgender, male, female, gender fluid/genderqueer, nonbinary, agender, or as another gender. Decisions to change gender expression and/or physical appearance to be more consistent with their gender identity through medical (e.g., hormone replacement therapy), nonmedical (e.g., voice therapy, choosing an affirming name, etc.), and/or surgical options (e.g. gender affirmation/confirmation surgery) is wholly determined by the individual.  The National LGBTQIA+ Health Education Center   https://www.lgbtqiahealtheducation.org/  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. Have I mentioned lately how much I love my church and pastor? Ron and I feel really grateful that we found a home at Compass Church. Drew Sherman (lead pastor at Compass) and his amazing wife Michelle are on the podcast today. It all started with a sermon that he preached at the beginning of the year that was SO GOOD! Even Larson remarked that it was her favorite sermon he has ever done. We are talking about the idea or the issue of: CONSISTENCY. And more specifically, how can we be consistent in our spiritual growth (for us and the kids). It's so easy to have huge dreams and ideas at the start of a year only to find yourself failing again and tossing your hands up. From physical goals to reading goals to financial goals - staying consistent can be the hardest part. The same is true for our spiritual goals as a family. Drew and Michelle share 4 very practical ways we can all grow in our consistency. When he talks he gives us a sincere caution: as a pastor, he is often seeing parents with seriously high (unrealistic) goals for their kids. Don't miss his encouragement and warning about exhausting our kids and being fixated on goals that don't matter as much as their walk with Jesus. As he says, “Don't miss the ride and the journey!”In this episode, we chat about:Why “consistency” matters for our spiritual growthEmbracing small steps that will lead to lasting change How to model faith and values in our homesHow a grace-filled environment allows for mistakesEnjoy!Courtney Chapters00:00Introduction and Connection05:03The Importance of Declaring Intentions10:01Consistency as a Catalyst for Change14:58Starting Small in Spiritual Growth20:04Overcoming the Urge to Give Up27:29Navigating Distractions in Modern Parenting35:12Cherishing Small Moments in Family LifeConnect with Pardon The Mess:Christian ParentingPardon The Mess Courtney DeFeoGet your 2024-2025 prayer journal, A Life of FaithResources from today's show:Compass ChurchDrew's sermon on CONSISTENCYLandon's sermon on RESPONSIBILITY (mentions manifesting)Pardon The Mess is a part of the Christian Parenting Podcast Network.
