I met David last November at the same dad's night out where I met Andrew, Creativity of Dad. Sitting across from David that evening, I got to know him through the dramatic glow, smoke, and aroma of all-you-can-eat Korean BBQ. Sharp and witty while also deeply contemplative; the son of a Jewish mom yet bearing the surname Rivera; a software developer by profession and a practitioner of Muay Thai and BJJ - only in New York, baby. But was it just the magic of dad's night and new friendship that brought out the most gregarious and introspective sides of us? Or would the same David and Shawn who bonded over BBQ show up and dive even deeper over a simple cup of coffee? The answer is pretty clear to me, but I'll let you decide for yourself.

Send a text MMA Docu SeriesDive into the incredible story of Marco Ruas, the barefoot Brazilian who stepped into the UFC octagon before the sport even had a name. Often called the forgotten pioneer, Ruas arrived at UFC 7 in 1995 with a revolutionary well-rounded game—blending Muay Thai devastation, judo throws, jiu-jitsu mastery, and luta livre grappling—that shattered the era of pure specialists. Watch as he dismantles opponents like Larry Cureton with early heel hooks, outstrikes Remco Pardoel, and methodically chops down the massive Paul Varelans with those legendary low kicks that echoed through the arena. We explore his gritty Rio origins, training under legends like Oswaldo Alves and Luis Alves, his vale tudo roots, the rivalry with the Gracies that never fully materialized, his dominant UFC 7 tournament win that proved versatility was the future, later battles against names like Oleg Taktarov and Maurice Smith, and the heartbreaking what-if matchup with Don Frye that fans still debate. Beyond the cage, Ruas's lasting impact shines through as a coach—he mentored Pedro Rizzo, whose devastating leg kicks carried Ruas's influence forward to shape fighters like Jose Aldo.If you're into MMA history, early UFC pioneers, or the evolution from vale tudo to modern mixed martial arts, this mini documentary uncovers why Ruas was truly ahead of his time—the first complete fighter who forced the sport to evolve.Hit play now and discover the man who mastered MMA before it even existed. In Episode 229 of the Pu'u Muay Thai Podcast, Jonathan Puu breaks down a pattern almost no one talks about — the two-year Muay Thai drop-off, when many students quietly disappear right as they're getting good. This isn't the beginner phase. In Episode 228 of the Pu'u Muay Thai Podcast, Jonathan Puu breaks down why Muay Thai in America is still widely misunderstood—even by people who think they know what it is.From being confused with kickboxing or cardio workouts to being seen as “too violent” or “only for fighters,” Muay Thai has often been introduced in the U.S. without its cultural, technical, and developmental context. As a result, many people miss out on what Muay Thai actually is—and what it can offer beyond fighting. In this episode, Jonathan explores:How Muay Thai was first introduced to American audiences through violence and highlight reelsWhy the fitness industry unintentionally stripped Muay Thai of its identityHow fighting became the only measure of legitimacy in the U.S.Why impatience and short-term thinking clash with Muay Thai's long-term natureThe difference between borrowing techniques and truly training the artWhat Muay Thai actually represents: discipline, regulation under pressure, humility, and communityDrawing from nearly two decades of experience as a student, fighter, coach, gym owner, promoter, and ring official, Jonathan explains why Muay Thai isn't struggling because it lacks value—but because it hasn't always been represented or explained properly. This episode is a call to protect the integrity of Muay Thai without watering it down, and to help more people understand it as a lifelong practice—not a phase, trend, or workout. If Muay Thai in America were better understood, fewer people would quit—and more would stay long enough for it to change them.Support the showLeave a message or text us 24/7/365!+1-805-456-3316

What if the difference between stalled growth and market leadership is one bold email, one honest reframe, or one great hire you think you can't afford? We sit down with Richard Conway, Founder and Managing Director of Pure SEO, to unpack how an introvert with $200 built one of New Zealand's most recognized digital marketing groups by betting on systems, A-players, and asymmetric opportunities. We trace the path from bartering for a logo to landing enterprise leads by upgrading brand signals online, then dig into the inflection point where ten people exposed the limits of hustle. Richard explains how bringing in an operations specialist, building internal software, and opening a Manila office cut errors, scaled delivery, and freed him to sell and lead. He shares the mentors and investors who compressed his learning curve, plus the gut-check process he uses to make fast, reversible decisions without burning out on analysis. The conversation gets real about personal adversity—miscarriages, a cancer diagnosis, and a key resignation in the same week—and how trust and responsibility pulled him out of bed when comfort would not. We explore why focusing on strengths beats fixing weaknesses, how to avoid punishing top performers, and why paying for A-players ultimately lowers cost. In Episode 227 of the Pu'u Muay Thai Podcast, Jonathan Puu reflects on what Muay Thai gave him over nearly two decades — not in techniques or fights, but in the lessons he didn't know he needed at the time.Like many people, Jonathan didn't start Muay Thai searching for discipline, clarity, or purpose. He just wanted to train, learn how to fight, defend himself, and push his limits. But over time, Muay Thai quietly provided structure, humility, emotional control, confidence, and a sense of belonging that carried far beyond the gym. This episode explores:How Muay Thai provides structure before you realize you need itWhy humility and patience are built through long-term trainingLearning emotional regulation under pressure and discomfortDeveloping confidence without chasing validationHow Muay Thai creates real community and belongingWhy the most valuable lessons often appear years laterJonathan shares how Muay Thai helped him stay grounded during uncertain stages of life, taught him to regulate emotion under pressure, and build a quiet confidence rooted in consistency rather than outcomes. This episode isn't about motivation or hype. It's about the deeper, lasting impact of staying in Muay Thai long enough for it to shape who you become — on and off the mats.If you've ever wondered why Muay Thai feels like more than just training, this conversation explains why.Support the showLeave a message or text us 24/7/365!+1-805-456-3316
