We talk with singer, songwriter, playwright, activist, and author Tara MacLean on this special episode of Sisters in Song. It was such a pleasure talking to Tara about becoming your own inner-nurturer, meditation to get herself back in tune, and all things music. I have hosted more guest mixes than ever this year, which I love because it exposes me to new artists and new mix concepts. Many of these mixes have come through the fine folks at Nettwerk Music Group. It's appropriate then that this final guest mix of the year comes from one of their artists - Hollie Kenniff. I absolutely love the way this mix ebbs and flows, the tracks blend together perfectly. Hollie just released her fourth album, For Forever, which is a lush, melodic ambient record that uses electronic and acoustic instrumentation to create an emotional, ethereal listening experience. Here's what Hollie says about her music: “My hope is that my music encourages others to explore their inner landscapes and to inspire reflection. I want my music to be a musical backdrop for meaningful and transformative moments in other people's lives.” I'm a music mix dork who loves a good segue between songs and this beautiful mix from Hollie has a ton of them, an absolute joy to soak in. Siblings, artists, and talented chemistry. Anastasia and Max Haunt have all the tools to put together one of the rising bands in the contemporary alt-pop scene. We were recently joined by this duo to talk about their short yet successful journey in the last 8 years. The Haunt, who have been receiving widespread critical acclaim from their 2021 EP, “Social Intercourse,” have returned with “Dead On Arrival,” which more than picks up where they left off from their previous record. After receiving praise from outlets like Revolver, Outburn, and Alternative Press, it was important for Max, Anastasia, and the rest of the band to stay the course and build from the success. Even though it may be a challenging attitude approach with a young talented group like The Haunt, they make it look like seasoned vets in the industry. “Dead On Arrival” is out now worldwide via Nettwerk Music Group.Stay connected with The Haunt, visit: https://thehauntband.com/, https://www.instagram.com/wearethehauntand https://www.facebook.com/WeAreTheHaunt/Stay connected with IUF, visit: https://interviewunderfire.com/
Internationally renowned singer/songwriter Tara MacLean joins Banyen for a discussion on her powerful memoir Song of the Sparrow. Tara MacLean, Canadian singer/songwriter, has been an internationally renowned and award-winning recording and touring artist for over 25 years. She released her first album with the Nettwerk Music Group and Sony Music Publishing Canada in 1996. Since then, she has been signed with Capitol Records and EMI Canada with her JUNO-nominated band Shaye. She has written and recorded six solo albums and two with the band. Her first book, Song of the Sparrow, hit the Best Seller list the week it was released, and Tara quickly followed it up with “Sparrow” - the soundtrack for the book.
The nice folks at Nettwerk Music Group reached out about the possibility of doing some guest mixes and I am pleased to present the first one. This mix comes to us from TJ Dumser who releases music under the moniker, Six Missing. He has a new album coming out in December so the timing is perfect. I'll let TJ tell you about his mix: "Listening to music always makes me transport to another place. And whenever a piece of music can make me travel to a place that elicits a vivid scene within my mind, I love it even more. Every time I sit and write a piece of music, I am always allowing it to take me somewhere, and then my goal is to try to capture that like a polaroid and develop it as quickly as I can so that the imagery is imprinted firmly within the makeup of the piece. Misty Morning is a collection of tracks both old and new that allow my mind to travel. Within this mix I've included pieces from not only myself (and an unreleased sneak peak), but from other artists I respect and love. Each track on here hits you with emotion and vibe instantaneously. There is no build-up for these. With each new piece you are gently guided along what I envision being the most perfect and slow morning with a cup of coffee as you watch the mist and fog rise up from the serene mountains behind your home. Or perhaps you are drifting in and out of sleep on an airplane or in a car. But you could also be seated and just merely listening. Regardless, these pieces aim to lift you up and out of your thinking mind and usher you into the beloved "in-between." While making my latest record "Here For Now," which comes out December 15th via Nettwerk, I was listening to artists that use sounds masterfully - Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, Visible Cloaks, and Nils Frahm all are within complete and total control of their voices and I found that incredibly inspiring as I was working to find my own voice. It is with great humility that I place my own music amongst artists such as Mort Garson and Ólafur Arnalds as well as the ever blissful Eydís Evensen. But thankfully, it seems to all feel like they belong there. I had a great time designing this curated vibe-adventure for you and hope you find some new artists you've never heard before as well as some old favorites. Thank you for listening." Life never follows a linear path. Instead, it twists, turns, and traverses the most unexpected of routes. Wingtip documents his journey via music, concretizing the trip for everyone to hear, see, and feel. The singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer-born Nick Perloff-Giles has organically morphed as an artist, giving his sound the space to progress in the process through an instinctive fusion of pop, alternative, electronic, and rock. Gathering over 100 million streams and packing shows, he continues to evolve on his 2023 EP for Nettwerk Music Group and much more to come. “Music has taken such a weird, winding road for me,” he affirms. “Seven years ago, I was a DJ. Wingtip is the same artistic project, but it's completely different. I'm focusing on songs that feel sonically big, wide, and warm. Lyrically, I pushed myself to be more personal, specific, and reflective of what I've actually experienced. There's more humor and self-awareness. I'm taking risks artistically and using my confidence to try genres in worlds I hadn't quite set forth in yet.” Emerging from Brooklyn by way of his native San Francisco in 2016, he entrenched himself as a genre-bending disruptor. During 2017, his breakout “Rewind” impacted virally and eventually tallied over 44 million Spotify streams and counting. 2019's “Heartworks” reeled in 17.6 million Spotify streams followed by “Happiness” with 6.3 million Spotify streams. 2020 saw him serve up All Your Friends Are Here highlighted by the likes of “Strangers” and “Demons.” Along the way, he also became a trusted collaborator and sought-after cowriter. He notably penned Céline Dion's chart-topping “Imperfections” with multiplatinum alternative pop powerhouse Lauv. He launched his first tour with a full band in 2022 and dropped a new single and video “Mr. 29.” In the midst of this whirlwind, he returned from the road re-energized and channeled this spirit into studio sessions. In this episode, Nick and I get to discuss feelings of imposter syndrome in the music industry, how music has played a role in his identity and how he has adapted when he has hit career setbacks, his themes of heartbreak, love, and relationships in his writing, the story behind his song, "Hope They Love You", how tour life affects his mental health, and much more. “The late Irish poet and author John O' Donohue had this fantastic notion about how there are three key things you absolutely need to have any kind of balance in this damn world: silence, stillness, and solitude. We're obviously living in a time that's utterly devoid of any of those three things.” Berman, who just welcomed his second daughter this year, adds, “As much as parenting is this unbelievable well of joy and wonder, it also just quadruples that cacophony. You're always dealing with the beginnings or the aftermath of chaos. I knew that if I couldn't find a way to make space for that silence, stillness, and solitude in my life, I'd be a much worse father, husband, and songwriter for it.”The artist's own musical journey continues to zigzag through uncharted territory. In 2014, Eddie made his debut with the EP Blood & Rust, featuring his duet of “Dancing in the Dark” with British folk icon Laura Marling. The adored Springsteen cover received praise from Spin, NME, Consequence of Sound, Uncut and more. In the aftermath, Berman's profile grew on international tours and with the release of his first LP Polyhymnia. He signed to Nettwerk Music Group in 2017 and released his sophomore album Before The Bridge, which saw him reach new milestones – generating tens of millions of streams with prime real estate on coveted Spotify playlists like Your Favorite Coffeehouse, Acoustic Covers, and The Pulse of Americana, and spurring tours with Laura Marling, Tyler Childers, Passenger, Lee Ann Womack, and William Fitzsimmons. In the midst of all this, Berman and his family relocated to Portland, OR. As he settled into life in his new city, he began making a daily pilgrimage to nearby Forest Park, one of the largest urban forests in the US. He made it a ritual to go on a six mile hike each morning, during which he immersed himself in the books and lectures of great philosophers like O' Donohue, Rainer Maria Rilke, Thich Nhat Hanh. “I'd hike the immensely beautiful three miles to the top of the trail listening to these incredible thinkers, and then hike back down in silence, unpacking what I'd heard. The constant through lines of these works started seeping into me: the deep solace of nature, the necessity of solitude, and the importance of always trying to see yourself on the threshold to new frontiers. This album came from that strange dualistic aspect of those hikes: one part of me was just trying to quiet my mind as I walked in the woods, and the other part of me was trying to, you know, dissect the infinite nature of the universe — and myself.https://eddiebermanmusic.com/Support the showThanks for listening for more information or to listen to other podcasts or watch YouTube videos click on this link >https://thetroutshow.com/

OSKA - "Starstruck" from the 2022 album My world, My love, Paris on Nettwerk Music Group. Though paying tribute to the City of Lights on her debut album My world, My love, Paris, singer/songwriter OSKA (real name: Maria Burger) was born in a small village in Lower Austria, the youngest of eight kids. She moved to Vienna at the age of 18 to study music, busking on the streets, and sharing her debut EP, Honeymoon Phase, in 2020. The five-song release won her the XA Music Export Award at Waves Vienna Festival 2020. Conceived near the beginning of the pandemic, OSKA envisioned the story of a couple "who board a boat as the world comes to an end" as the theme for her eagerly-anticipated first full-length. She cites her inspiration as the Edith Piaf song "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien" (which translates to “No, I do not regret anything”). Today's Song of the Day has a particular cinematic influence. "This song was inspired by one of my favorite movies, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," she shared in a press release. “It's about celebrating someone great that is in your life while also dealing with the fear of losing them.” This week's Songs of the Day were selected by KEXP DJ Kevin Cole, host of Drive Time, showcasing artists playing at this year's ESNS (Eurosonic Noorderslag) Festival. ESNS is a European new music showcase festival and conference committed to presenting and supporting the best new and emerging artists. This year's festival will take place January 18-21, 2023 in Groningen, NL. Canadian singer/songwriter Carsen Gray brings the beauty of her homeland of Haida Gwaii, BC to her music. “It's very chill, beautiful, laidback, and peaceful,” she says of her home in a press statement. “The people are nice and welcoming. We all support one another and cheer each other on. Because of where I'm from, I feel like I was able to come out with such a warm project. We're in a safe little place up here. I'm proud of my heritage, where I come from, and the land I live on.” She brings that "chill, beautiful, laidback, and peaceful" vibe to today's Song of the Day, which showcases Gray's soulful voice against an acoustic guitar. We had the pleasure of interviewing Brooke Annibale over Zoom video.Indie singer/songwriter Brooke Annibale released new album Better By Now through Nettwerk Music Group. A fearless new collection of songs, Brooke has both emboldened her sound on Better By Now as well as entered a new phase of life after making significant strides in her mental-health journey and saying “I do” to her wife. “I wrote this song in early January 2021,” stated Brooke. “We had literally just put the christmas tree out on the curb, and I felt this terrible sentimental feeling for it. This was also the same week as the Capitol attack. We had pushed through 2020, looking at 2021 as some kind of savior, but once it arrived nothing really changed. There was still the same intensely hostile political discourse and the pandemic continued raging on. It felt like things were getting worse somehow, when I hoped for it to be better by now. Reflecting on that time, it taught me that expecting a perfect external outcome will not lead to feeling better. I've got to do the internal work to have any kind of peace with the roller coaster of life.” Produced by Christian “Leggy” Langdon (Joseph, Amos Lee) and Matthew E White (Natalie Prass, Dan Croll), Better By Now features 10 blossoming indie-pop tracks that Brooke describes as a “spectrum of emotions.” In her trademark layered approach, the Pittsburgh-born, Rhode Island-based artist reflects on love, anxiety, depression, and how two seemingly opposing forces can exist at once. “The album is basically half about falling in love and half about mental health.” Earlier this summer, Brooke teased a couple songs from her new album, including the “immediately catchy” (FLOOD) lead single “What If You” and the “soaring, ethereal pop song” (Brooklyn Vegan) “5 AM” accompanied by the Genéa Gaudet-directed video. In celebration of Pride Month, Brooke also shared an inspiring op-ed via Atwood Magazine on representation, equality, authentic connection, and her journey to self-acceptance. Brooke's expressive and beautifully thoughtful songwriting creates a dreamy and enticing sonic landscape. We want to hear from you! In this bonus episode of Salute The Songbird, Maggie chats with indie musician Bre Kennedy backstage at Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, where they were both performing. Maggie and Bre discuss what it feels like to be back and Bonnaroo after 3 consecutive cancellations, as well as back on the road. Bre discusses the introspection she did during and emerging out of the pandemic, and how she got herself back to writing new music. Singer-songwriter Bre Kennedy creates music soaked in rich, timeless storytelling with innate pop sensibilities. In 2019, she self-released her Jealous of Birds EP, followed by 2020's Twenty Something EP, with both title tracks landing on Spotify's coveted New Music Friday playlist. She released her debut full-length album, Note To Self, in October 2021, which was inspired by her time alone in lockdown and after reading Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way. At the end of 2021, Kennedy signed to Nettwerk Music Group. She is currently working on new music and will join Joy Oladokun on her Spring 2022 tour. She has cemented herself as an artist to watch and one of the brightest voices out of the New Nashville music scene.Salute the Songbird is brought to you by Osiris Media. Hosted by Maggie Rose. Do we need to be on our best behaviour in order to be loved? If we were to show up in our most authentic manner, in the most powerful way, can we be accepted for who we really are? What's the point of being validated and accepted by others, when it costs us our own opinion of ourselves?
