The great peaks and valleys of the creative experience, inhabiting similar world views, and moving into a garage apartment. John Calvin Abney "Shortwave radio is a nearly-defunct technology that now exists only on the edge of memory, a tool of niche hobbyists. It is a fitting metaphor, then, for those continuing down a highway without travelers, a dusty trail without service to make a call. On his new EP, Shortwaving, alternative Americana singer-songwriter and in-demand sideman (you might have seen him on stage with artists like John Moreland, Ben Kweller, Wild Child, Hanson, and countless others), John Calvin Abney explores the unease - the fear, even - that comes from repeatedly sending signals into the atmosphere and hearing little but static and silence in response. As Abney puts it in the title track: “Swim the shortwave / Cutting in and out / I'm losing strength in these hills / Between the stations / Is the dark you heard about / Can you hear it now? / Shortwaving still.” The central question of this project is this - what do you do when communication seems to be losing its ability to reach people? For Abney, the answer is to beam your message into the void regardless, almost as an act of faith. The result is a haunting set of country-rock laments, descended from classic end-of-the-party albums like Neil Young's On The Beach and Jason Molina's The Magnolia Electric Co. Chunky minor chords loop on repeat while ghostly slide guitar figures glide in and out of earshot. When Abney sings “There's a devil in the dialtone,” we can hear exactly what he means. Recorded at Columbus, Ohio's Secret Studio in a single day with a small group of friends, including co-producer Lydia Loveless on background vocals and engineering duties, one gets the feeling of accidentally stumbling upon the lost tapes of an obscure Midwestern band, amplifying incantations away in a hidden corner somewhere. These are songs about not being heard that sound almost private, as if they're perhaps not meant to be heard. This intimate quality gives Shortwaving a refreshing lack of self-consciousness. Abney gives the impression of singing these songs primarily to himself, almost as a kind of prayer. While coming to terms with the reality of communicating and creating in an age of noise and glamor, he is attempting to “whisper in a hurricane”. The theme of soldiering on through the cacophony permeates the 5-song set - whether in “Arkansas River Bridge”, where Abney challenges both heaven and the devil to “See me get back up and try,” or in the chorus of “Truckee River Blues”, where Abney sings to both the moon and himself, “Shine on, sickle blade moon / It's too late to go too soon.” Shortwaving's glimmers of hope, the “silver lining on a shadow”, as Abney puts it in the title track, come in a few buoyant musical moments later on in the EP - the chiming sparks of a faraway guitar on the instrumental track “Supporting Actor”, which sounds like it could be lifted straight from the session tapes of Led Zeppelin III, and the triumphant, crashing chords that announce the chorus of final track “Truckee River Blues”. After a dark night of the soul spent swimming in the airwaves, it feels as if John Calvin Abney finally receives his response amidst the droning static and spectral frequencies. It is a reminder of the joy and humanity contained in the very act of moving forward and sending out transmissions on these lost highways. And even though it may be harder to hear than it once was - on certain wavelengths at least, Shortwaving is a lighthouse, helping to navigate memories of what used to be." This week's mixtape rewind takes us back to an earlier season where we were joined by Tony Smith, formerly of the band Sleeper Agent.Tony Smith's musical journey begins with Saturday mornings filled with Christopher Cross's "Ride Like the Wind" – his mother's chosen soundtrack for family cleaning day – and ends with the transcendent experience of Bon Iver's "Naeem."Each selection marks a transformative moment: discovering Ben Kweller's "Wasted and Ready" at 3am led to a shift away from nu-metal toward indie rock; encountering The Pixies' "Debaser" completely redirected his career aspirations from filmmaking to music; and Modest Mouse's "Trailer Trash" became a personal anthem while working two jobs during high school, feeling trapped in his Kentucky hometown. What makes this episode special is Smith's vulnerability in sharing how deeply these songs penetrated his life. With three tattoos inspired by tracks on his mix, he demonstrates how music becomes physically part of our identity. His emotional description of waiting years to hear Bon Iver's "Naeem" in studio form – "my body filled with this strange chill and warmth at the same time" – perfectly captures music's power to move us beyond words. You can find his Spotify playlist here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1RyTOvV7DHYRfW4UdDHTry?si=610402a96acc4fe4 You can find the Super Awesome Mix app list here: https://app.superawesomemix.com/i3BxT4TjZeZyZ4Gb8 Preview of his list:I Want You Back by The Jackson 5Bad, Bad Leroy Brown by Jim CroceWorking Man by RushMMMBop by HansonWasted & Ready by Ben KwellerDebaser by PixiesTrailer Trash by Modest MouseHummingbird by WilcoLust For Life by GirlsFalling In Love Again by Joyce ManorSomething by Julien BakerNaeem by Bon IverFollow us @superawesomemix on Instagram to discover more personal musical journeys and share your own musical milestones that defined different chapters of your life.Support the showVisit us at https://www.superawesomemix.com to learn more about our app, our merchandise, our cards, and more!

This week's guest is Fred Eltringham! If you listened to our recent episode with Sterling Laws, you heard Fred get a lot of love as one of Sterling's five picks—so it was an honor to finally have him on the show himself. And I gotta say…his voice is so soothing and calm. Puts mine to shame. Fred has been playing with Sheryl Crow since 2012, but his résumé also includes The Wallflowers, The Chicks, kd lang, Willie Nelson, Gigolo Aunts, Juliana Hatfield, Ben Kweller, and plenty more. He's a steady, calm ship at sea behind the kit, and it seems like songwriters line up around the block to work with him. In addition to his international touring with Sheryl, you can catch him on Instagram whenever he's doing something cool in Nashville—especially with Jules Belmont, as part of their tasty little instrumental group. So, please enjoy my chat with Fred Eltringham about the five records that shaped him into the musician he is today. Cheers! --- Get Your Copy of the Drummers on Drumming Book Today!

We begin 2025 by going back 23 years to discuss our favourite songs of 2002, including emo classics, motivational hardcore, sparkly piano pop, terrifyingly positive psychedelic religious cults, and THE GREATEST GUITAR RIFF OF ALL TIME.We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Christina Aguilera ft Redman, Aqualung, Bright Eyes, Vanessa Carlton, Cousteau, The Delgados, The DIllinger Escape Plan Ft Mike Patton, Down, Frou Frou, Hatebreed, Idlewild, Isis, Jay-Z Ft Big Boi, Killer Mike, & Twista, July Skies, Ben Kweller, Avril Lavigne, Malcolm Middleton, Miss Black America, Nada Surf, Nine Inch Nails, Opeth, The Polyphonic Spree, Porcupine Tree, Sonic Youth, theSTART, Sigur Ros, Taking Back Sunday, Tech N9ne, Wilco, and James Yorkston & The AthletesFind all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/13AsY6By1DI8knbl7TpMFx?si=cd88b8d2738249feFind our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQIf you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes (which need updating but I plan on doing them over the next month or so), you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdgIan's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqAand Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9NwThe playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Helen Jackson-BrownRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Part of the We Dig Podcasts network along with Free With This Months Issue & Pick A Disc.Bluesky - https://bsky.app/profile/wedigmusic.bsky.socialInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/wedigpusicpcast/Find our other episodes & podcasts at www.wedigpodcasts.com
BEN LEE IS GOING TO DIEBen Lee began his career as a young teenager in the early 90's, in the Australian lo-fi punk band Noise Addict, who were discovered by taste-making artists Sonic Youth and the Beastie Boys. That began an extraordinary career that has been both eclectic and eccentric, and still growing more strange and fascinating each day. Whether collaborating in one-off projects like the Bens (with Ben Folds and Ben Kweller), producing a Grammy award winning music/comedy album for Margaret Cho (“Cho Dependent”), duetting with Sarah Silverman, writing a psychedelic children's musical with American literary legend Tom Robbins, or simply strumming away on his guitar and putting out over 20 solo albums of songs that have made romantics swoon for multiple generations, Ben's career is always (to quote his song “Ache 4 You”) “confusing...but never dull”.As a curious explorer of religion and philosophy, Ben has cultivated a comfortable relationship with mortality - and his experiences as a death midwife have only deepened his understanding of a journey through lived existence. What better person to plan a dream Funeral with? Now, collaborating with his wife, actress Ione Skye, on their company Weirder Together, Lee is supporting other artists in creating bizarre and beautiful content spanning everything from podcasts and music, to events and fanzines, as well as film projects.Website: Ben-Lee.comInstagram: @BenLeeMusicMarieke Hardy Is Going To Die is a podcast made by Marieke Hardy (IG @marieke_hardy).You can follow at IG @GoingToDiePodMusic by Lord Fascinator (IG @lordfascinator)Produced by Darren Scarce (IG @Dazz26)Video edits by Andy Nedelkovski (IG @AndyNeds)Artwork by Lauren Egan (IG @heylaurenegan)Photography by Eamon Leggett (IG @anxietyoptions)With thanks to Amelia Chappelow (IG @ameliachappelow)Camilla McKewen (IG @CamillaLucyLucy)and Rhys Graham (IG @RhysJGraham)Drop an email to mariekehardyisgoingtodie@gmail.comWhilst acknowledging the privilege that comes with having the space to discuss death and mortality, we want to also recognise that discussing these topics can raise some wounds. Margaret Glaspy joins me on the show this week. Her album from last year “Echo The DIamond” was one of my favorite records of the year. Margaret started out as a fiddle player, and played pretty seriously around California as a youngster before dedicating herself to the guitar and eventually going to Berklee for a short time to study. She played around Boston and then moved to New York where she found her way into the creative music scene in Brooklyn in the mid 2000's. She started making EP's and then full-legth albums in around 2016. I first heard her “Emotions and Math” LP and was really intrigued by her approach to writing, and especially how she seemed to build intricate, angular guitar parts that would weave through her songs. “Devotion” came next in 2020, and then “Echo The Diamond” in 2023. On “Echo”, her songwriting is incredible, her guitar playing is intense and jagged, the band is stellar (she's working with Chris Morrissey who has played with Andrew Bird and Ben Kweller, and David King, the drummer for The Bad Plus). It's a co-production with her husband, Julian Lage, and Margaret has also produced several of Julian's recent releases. She just released a solo acoustic record called “The Sun Doesn't Think” and we talk about all of these projects here today.Check out all of Margaret's amazing music and find out where she's playing over at margaretglaspy.com - Enjoy my conversation with Margaret Glaspy! This season is brought to you by our sponsors Larivée Guitars and Fishman AmplificationYou can join our Patreon here to get all episodes ad-free, as well as access to all early episodesThe show's website can be found at www.makersandshakerspodcast.com Get ad-free episodes and access to all early episodes by subscribing to Patreon. This genuinely seems like parody... but it's real. In this episode of the Brad vs Everyone podcast, I break down a bizarre interview that woke West Hollywood mayor John Erickson did with The Free Press. Plus, I analyze a new lawsuit from the family of school shooting victims against Call of Duty, a viral moment from Nikki Haley, and a bizarre TikTok that's so woke it's actually sexist. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of songwriters who broke out in the ‘90s and early 2000s and have had fruitful careers since—and who happen to be old pals—Ben Kweller and Brendan Benson. As you'll hear in this chat, Kweller got his rock life started early, learning guitar as a teenager and hustling hard for gigs in the small Texas town where he grew up. His first band, Radish, got a big record deal while Kweller was still a kid, and while they never exactly blew up, there's definitely some love out there for the band's early records. Kweller went solo in the early 2000s with the classic album Sha Sha, which was an early release on Dave Matthews' record label ATO—and which last year got the deluxe anniversary reissue treatment. He's had a run of great solo records since, and was in a supergroup called The Bens with Ben Folds and Ben Lee. He also started a music collective called The Noise Company, which is a sort of hybrid studio/management/record label. They're having a big blowout at this year's South by Southwest, so if you're down there, it's at the Mohawk on March 15. Check out a little bit of a great Kweller song right here, “American Cigarettes.” Brendan Benson, as you'll hear in this chat, is a bit older than Kweller, but he's had a similarly remarkable career. Benson's debut solo album came out back in 1996, but if you're looking for a place to start with his driving rock songs, check out 2002's Lapalco. Benson has eight solo albums to his credit, including 2002's Low Key, but he might be best known as the co-frontman of The Raconteurs, along with his old friend, bandmate, and Detroit-area native Jack White. Check out a great Benson track for earlier days right here, “What I'm Looking For,” and catch him at the Noise Company showcase this weekend as well. These two old pals sound delighted to be chatting, and they jump right into an unplanned episode of Car Talk—Kweller, as it turns out, might get himself a Tesla Cybertruck. They also talk a lot of the spark of creativity that led them to their chosen careers, and they each mention the embarrassing first songs they ever wrote. Kweller tells a great story about hearing “Smells Like Teen Spirit” for the first time as well, and Benson admits that The Three Stooges have had a huge influence on how he harmonizes. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Ben Kweller and Brendan Benson for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform and check out all the great stuff at Talkhouse.com. In today's episode, I talk to Grammy-nominated musician, Ben Kweller. Ben started in the music industry when he was 12 years old! He was part of the popular band Radish—which was signed to major record label, Mercury Records. But when Ben was 19, Radish disbanded. So Ben moved to New York and went solo. 30 years later, he's still releasing new music, runs a production studio, and mentors musicians to help them navigate the behind-the-scenes side of the music industry. Check out Ben Kweller's music wherever you listen, and get more from him on his website BenKweller.com. If you've ever wanted to learn about what it's like to be a young rockstar, you'll love this episode. In this conversation, you'll enjoy 3 BIG things: 1. Why Ben never had a backup plan out of the music industry 2. How “jam-nesia” is the KEY to having a long-term music career 3. And what ACTUALLY makes you money as a musician (spoiler alert: it's not your songs) Enjoy those 3 things… plus a bunch more ear nuggets along the way. How was Ben Lee's second gig as support for Sonic Youth?! Ben Lee's band Noise Addict were loved by Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore and the Beastie Boys Mike D and toured with Sebadoh when he was only 16 years old! How the heck did all that happen? Why did he decide to go solo so soon after finding huge success with Noise Addict? What do Mike D and Money Mark have to do with Ben working with T-Bone Burnett and how did that song end up on the end credits of the film Best Men? He's recorded with Evan Dando and Mandy Moore, teamed up with Ben Folds and Ben Kweller to form The Bens and won ARIA Single Of The Year for his song Catch My Disease, but how did the idea for that song start. How did Ben's song “How to Survive a Broken Heart" become integral to a scene in the Farrelly Brothers classic film There's Something About Mary? And how happy was Ben to discover what music sync is? His most recent album I'm Fun was released through Warner Music in June 2022 and to be honest, he is fun! Listen to this episode with Ben Lee and see for yourself. Connor McLaren is a psych-folk artist from Bloomington, Indiana. Referred to as the "American Liam Gallagher but friendlier", he builds his musical home on a faded denim foundation - think Bob Dylan or The Who. His walls can tell a thousand stories - think Todd Snider or Lou Reed - and though it's only apparent in some of the rooms, there's a distinct love for Reggae, thanks to his yearly pilgrimage to Jamaica. As you look upon the mostly vintage decor, you'll notice the occasional shiny item - think Mike Posner or Billie Eilish. Everything comes together like cutting edge comfort food for the ears. If you could live inside of a sound, you'd probably move here and stay awhile... Welcome to the home of Connor McLaren. While attending Appalachian State University, Connor discovered a key building tool for his music; Cannabis. As his mind expanded, so did his desire to hit the road. Without a team or music biz knowledge, he and his brother Alec, began setting up outside of their favorite bands' concerts. They'd play on the street amidst droves of music fans exiting venues, accepting generous donations to their “Weed Fund” tip box. These DIY antics got the attention of indie-icon Ben Kweller who invited the brothers to Texas to write and record. In the spring of 2022, Connor signed with The Noise Company to release his forthcoming debut album, Innocence. Listen to Connor on Spotify. Follow Connor on Instagram.
Today we're digging into Ben Kweller's amazing Sha Sha album from 2000. Our guest Annie Dressner joins us to share some of her favorite moments regarding the record and how it connects back to her own personal history as a songwriter.Annie also plays a couple of songs live for Jeff and Matt during this conversation, which happened just a few days before she went back out on tour. She discusses "I've Always Been Like This," her newest collaboration with Matthew Caws of Nada Surf and lots more. We had a blast speaking with Annie and look forward to seeing what's ahead as she continues to work on new music.Visit Annie's website for upcoming tour dates, music and more!If you enjoy these episodes, please consider joining our Patreon to become a member of our Record Club. Hello Drum Channel family! Welcome to this week's podcast with Billy Amendola & Sheryl Crow/session musician Fred Eltringham. In this episode, Fred goes through his early years of paying his dues and moving between his birthplace, Philadelphia, to attending Berklee College in Boston, to gigging in NYC and California, then back to NYC, and now since 2007, residing in Nashville with his wife and children. Listen in on how Fred's career frustrations fell into circumstances that led him to become one of the most sought-after session drummers in Nashville, recording hit after hit, to playing, recording & touring as a band member with Sheryl Crow for the past ten years. Eltringham has performed, and recorded with Vince Gill, Carrie Underwood, Kacey Musgraves, the Wallflowers, Willie Nelson, Ben Kweller, and many more. In 2018, Fred (who's super-shy and low-key, with impeccable time and feel) was honored “Drummer of the Year,” by the ACM awards. We caught up with the busy drummer a few days before he left to hit the road touring with Sheryl. Let's listen!
In his early days as a singer-songwriter, Dan Miraldi met Matt. While the wise thing would have been to run away screaming, Dan did one better than that -- he moved to New York City. But in the years since that initial meeting, Dan and Matt continued to cross paths occasionally and one thing that was always consistent was that they were guaranteed to spend some time nerding out about music. Today, we continue that tradition, digging deep into Dan's latest album, Radio Friendly Darling. But we also discuss a wide variety of additional subjects, from Ben Kweller and Radish to KISS. It was a blast speaking with him and hopefully you'll enjoy our chat.We reference a lot of different things and you'll find links to many of them in the show notes.Dan has shows coming up soon in both Cleveland and the New York area. Our guest today is one Brittany Valint, who is no stranger to the program. Previously, we dissected Ben Kweller's 2002 record Sha Sha, which you can listen to in Episode 70. Brittany is someone who I've gotten to know a little more over the past year and I'm so proud to call her a friend. She makes up one-half of the atmospheric project known as Wall of Trophies with her co-conspirator Will Copps, and also pens songs under her own moniker, Brittany Jean. This time around, Brittany has selected The Instigator, - the second solo album from Rhett Miller, front man of the legendary band known as Old 97's. The Instigator, which was released on Elektra back on September 24, 2002, is chock-full of excellent artists in their own right alongside Rhett, including multi-instrumentalist and producer Jon Brion, percussionist Lenny Castro, X's John Doe, drummer Joshua Freese, songwriter/artist David Garza, legendary artist Robyn Hitchcock, Jim Keltner on drums, touring and session drummer Dan Mac Carroll on drums (Aimee Mann, Sheryl Crow and others), and vocalists Karen Kilgarriff and Chrissy Guerrero. We take our conversation “track x track” and Brittany sprinkles in a few personal stories about seeing Rhett performing solo at The Kennedy Center in DC, and on one frigid night at Starr Hill in Charlottesville, VA. Enjoy!

Big Fat Five: A Podcast Financially Supported by Big Fat Snare Drum
This week's guest is Mark Stepro. Mark is the epitome of an LA-based working drummer with a resume that includes recording and/or performing with The Wallflowers, Ben Kweller, Courtney Love, Jackson Browne, Brett Dennen, Keith Urban, Dwight Yoakam, John Prine, Butch Walker, Leon Bridges…the list certainly goes on. Mark has an infectious energy and we actually shared lockouts across from each other in LA for about a year without ever realizing it. I always just heard this great drummer across the hall that reminded me how much I needed to work on my feel. So thanks Mark. We start the show with walk down memory lane before hopping into Mark's top 5 influences that made him into the drummer he is today. Cheers!
