Sherri Coale was one of the most accomplished and impactful head coaches in University of Oklahoma history in any sport, is retiring after a transformative 25 years at the helm of the OU women's basketball program. Coale retiring after 25 years, more than 500 wins, 3 Final Fours, 9 Sweet 16s and 10 conference championships. Owner of the most wins in OU women's basketball history and a member of the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, Coale was a four-time Big 12 Coach of the Year and directed the Sooners to 10 Big 12 championships (six regular season, four tournament) and 20 postseason appearances, including 19 consecutive NCAA Tournaments. She finished her collegiate career with a 513-294 (.636) overall record and a 253-167 (.601) mark in Big 12 play. Nine of her squads that qualified for the NCAA Tournament advanced to the Sweet 16 or beyond. Three of them barreled their way to the Final Four (2002, 2009, 2010), with the 2001-02 Sooners advancing to the national championship game. All told, her teams registered 31 NCAA Tournament wins, good for 15th most among Division I women's basketball coaches. Her three Final Four appearances are tied for eighth most in history. Her new book about her journey in sports and life is called Rooted to Rise. a collection of essays about people—some have achieved extraordinary worldly success, and some have led what society might label “ordinary lives.” But the stories are far less about what her people have done and far more about who they are, or were, or always will be through the impact they had on those around them. As Coale writes: "The people I write about in Rooted to Rise are my people. But everybody has some. I hope you recognize and remember yours through the stories of mine." REGISTER NOW! Sherri Coale is a native Oklahoman. She grew up about thirty miles to the right side of the Red River in a small rural town where she fell in love with reading, writing, and basketball, not necessarily in that order. In 1987 after a highly successful collegiate career at Oklahoma Christian, she hung up her high tops, moving from the court to the sideline as she began what would become a Hall of Fame career as a Women's Basketball Coach. For 25 years, Sherri Coale served as the head women's basketball coach at the University of Oklahoma where she is the winningest women's basketball coach in OU history. She built a powerhouse program in Norman that appeared in 19 straight NCAA tournaments and competed in three Final Fours. Sherri Coale is a member of the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame, the Oklahoma Women's Hall of Fame, the Oklahoma Christian Hall of Fame, the Oklahoma FCA Hall of Fame, the Norman High School Wall of Fame, and has “Home of” signs that flank both entrances to the small town of Healdton where she was born and raised and will be eternally indebted. During her illustrious career at the University of Oklahoma, in addition to coaching the Sooners, Coale participated in USA Basketball as an assistant coach in 2001 where the squad won a bronze medal, and a head coach in the World University Games in 2013 where her USA squad defeated Russia on their home court to bring home the gold. In addition to competitive excellence inside the lines both nationally and internationally, Sherri Coale has received numerous accolades and recognitions for her players' performance academically as well as their team community service through the years. Maximizing her players' skills both on and off the court has always been her goal. Sherri Coale is an author, a master motivator, an engaging speaker, a gifted writer, and a keen observer of everyday life. She and her husband, Dane, have been married for 35 years. They have two children, one daughter-in-law, and one adorable granddaughter around which their universe currently spins. You can find her weekly blog, “A Weigh of Life” at sherricoale.com. Rooted to Rise, an Amazon bestseller, is her first book. Coach had a number of amazing insights during our conversation. Some of them include: “'Coach' is a term of an endearment. It's one of the most kind and respectful things someone can say about you” (5:00). “My job [as a coach and a parent] is to help you think and grow, and that means we're not always going to be friends” (8:50). “I would be most comfortable being a little bit different than the athletes that I coach” (12:00). “Regardless of whether you have a faith or not, if you can stop for 15 minutes and sing some hymns and spend some time together, your day would be better” (15:10). “We have to take care of each other” (21:20). “Who are you really bound to, what are you really tied to, that gives you sturdiness, that anchors you, if everything you do is on a whim or is based on how you feel or what you want?” (21:55). “I want to do things that matter. I want to do things that move me. I want to do things that impact other people” (24:35). “There is more to life than the outcome of games” (29:15). “Coaches are choosing to do other things before they find themselves in a place where they resent what they love” (29:55). “It's so easy for high level coaches to get caught up in this world that is make believe” (32:10). “[Coaching] is just something that I did. What I [am is my kids'] mom and Sherri” (35:20). “None of us have only one side. We have to have a lot of different sides to accomplish all the different things we want to accomplish” (37:25). “[Coaching and writing] are very similar as professions. You can't do either one of them by putting your heart on the shelf. You have to just go at it. Full throttle.” (40:20). “You don't want to put everything in the spice cabinet into your recipe” (49:20). “We have so many opportunities every single day to set people up for something great” (55:25). “I don't know if a piece of writing ever really gets to completion” (57:40). “When the coaching world was getting a little bit heavy and I needed to escape, I would get lost in a bookstore” (58:20). “What you learn as you get older and more experienced in the business of coaching is that you have to detach enough to be able to see everything as information” (1:02:30). “I wrote it because it was true to me and I thought it might help people” (1:04:15). Additionally, you can follow coach on Twitter and purchase her book, Rooted to Rise: The Redwood Legacies of Life Anchoring People, at either Amazon or Barnes & Noble. Thank you so much to Sherri for coming on the podcast! I wrote a book called “Shift Your Mind” that was released in October of 2020, and you can order it on Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Maxine Horner was one of the first two African American women to serve in the Oklahoma Senate. While working for Congressman James R. Jones she became interested in politics, which prompted her to run for an open seat in 1986. She termed out in 2004. Maxine’s focus was on economic development and education. Of the many bills she sponsored, her highlight piece of legislation was the OHLAP bill known as Oklahoma’s Promise. She introduced the idea and saw it through to passage. Some of the students receiving financial aid from this bill went on to serve in the Oklahoma legislature. All of this from a woman who was not allowed to shop in many downtown Tulsa stores and was asked to move to the back of the bus when using public transportation. Her legislative career included serving as the first female chair of the Democratic Caucus and the chair of the Business and Labor committee. Maxine is also credited with founding the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame and was inducted in the Oklahoma Women’s Hall of Fame in 2007.Maxine was 89 years old when she died on February 7th, 2021.

The first woman elected as Chief of the Cherokee Nation was Wilma Pearl Mankiller. She was born November 18, 1945 in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Her father was a full-blood Cherokee and her mother was of Dutch and Irish ancestry. Wilma served as Principal Chief from December 1985 – 1995.Wilma Mankiller was motivated to become active in Cherokee tribal affairs due to several life events that she discusses in detail in this interview recorded in 2009.Wilma was inducted into the Oklahoma Women’s Hall of Fame in 1986, The Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 1994 and received the Presidential Medal of Honor in 1998.Up until her diagnosis with pancreatic cancer in late winter/spring 2010, she continued to write, speak and teach American Indian Culture proudly living on Mankiller Flats, in rural Adair County, Oklahoma, on her grandfather’s land.
The Oklahoma Women's Coalition's mission is “to champion the collective power of Oklahomans to advance gender equity and justice.” Underscoring this mission are two key initiatives: Pay transparency legislation and a pipeline to politics. “There's a lot of mania around the topic of pay transparency,” says Liz Charles, who is eager to clarify the language of two bills being considered by Oklahoma House Committees. One of the bills seeks to raise fines charged for violations against the Equal Pay Act. “These fines haven't been raised since the Act became law in 1963,” says Charles. “Though we aren't asking for numbers in line with inflation, we are asking for a bit of an increase for employers who discriminate against women.” https://www.okwc.org/ The Oklahoma Venture Forum (OVF) is the state's preeminent organization fostering innovation and economic growth. We introduce investors, mentors and support organizations to entrepreneurs, providing collaborative venues for sharing ideas. OVF champions small businesses and economic development by connecting and recognizing venture talents. Since our beginning, we have acted as the preeminent ecosystem for business innovation and entrepreneurship development. Our diverse membership includes investors, entrepreneurs, and service providers from a wide array of statewide industries. www.OVF.org
As young Liz Charles traveled the world, she noticed a pattern: “People would tease my mom and they wouldn’t let her speak. So I saw her own personal fight with trying to have her space and equal opportunity. Both my parents were pastors and missionaries, but my mom got shot down because she was a woman.” Now Liz is in Oklahoma, and she is continuing the fight for women’s rights in her position as Executive Director of the Oklahoma Women’s Coalition, The coalition’s mission is “to champion the collective power of Oklahomans to advance gender equity and justice.” Underscoring this mission are two key initiatives: Pay transparency legislation and a pipeline to politics. “There’s a lot of mania around the topic of pay transparency,” says Liz Charles, who is eager to clarify the language of two bills being considered by Oklahoma House Committees. One of the bills seeks to raise fines charged for violations against the Equal Pay Act. “These fines haven’t been raised since the Act became law in 1963,” says Charles. “Though we aren’t asking for numbers in line with inflation, we are asking for a bit of an increase for employers who discriminate against women.” The Coalition is championing another piece of legislation that falls along the same lines. “We want folks to be allowed to inquire, through proper, established channels, about the salary ranges at their workplace. Right now, asking someone with your same experience and education about their salary can get you fired. So we are working on a bill that would allow for more transparent conversations.” And it takes many conversations to get to that level of transparency. “We’ve introduced these bills during the last four legislative sessions,” says Liz Charles, “and there have been amendments along the way.” In contrast to a legislative process that may take years and conclude with an unexpected outcome, the annual Pipeline to Politics Conference delivers every time. “It’s a win-win,” declares Charles, “because every woman who attends leaves with an understanding of local-level politics. The conference is for any woman of any age who is interested in public service. The speakers are from all levels of government, from school board members to legislators.” Not surprisingly, the conversations at this one-day conference are very transparent. Topics include how to campaign for yourself, what to do when you win, what to do you when you lose, and how to campaign for another candidate. The full circle conversations are the best. Says the Executive Director, “It’s awesome when former attendees decide to run for office, get elected, and then come back as conference speakers. I think this belief in equality has always been ingrained in me,” she says. “Women deserve a face and we deserve to have influence and positions of leadership because of our experiences matter and our voice matters. There are people who need to hear from us. People need to put women in those positions so those little girls can see women doing things we think only men can do. Because you can’t be what you can’t see.” Interviewed by Dennis Spielman for The Golding Group.

Word of God Church presents Gratitude:UnFiltered VI “The Testimony of Sharee Land” with your host Joshua T Berglan! A word from Sharee…… “I am a Wife , Mom, and a LaLa . A ministry leader and counselor for ” Back Porch Ministry” We are the Owners for our Ministry and Grace which helps women coming out of abuse, addictions. and prison .. I go into the Oklahoma Women’s Prisons sharing Jesus Christ and Hope thru Him…. And I am an advocate for mental health … Went to school to be a Christian counselor. From the outside looking in , I looked like I had a very happy life, but found myself.paralyzed. and struggling with severe mental health. ADHD, Severe Anxiety Disorder and PTSD .. From a childhood of abuse and being molested , to 15 year working in the sex industry , 20 year addiction to crack and meth , a 14 year marriage to a drug dealer and addict living in constant emotional and physical abuse .. Than finally escaping that life , getting sober , went to work for a big church doing ministry but I was more caught up into appearance and performance and how I looked, that I never took time to heal and face all I had been running from my whole.life .. I began to spiral.down and found myself no longer wanting to live , I could not handle the everyday , PTSD and extreme anxiety and the energy it took to get thru the day .. Some days I couldn’t even get out of the house , . All the pain finally rearing its head.of a deep dark ugly past, past generations wounds of loved ones . Those wounds finally busting open, I found myself in a dark place and begin to question my own life … But thru a lot of counseling and professional and Godly help., I learned to fight back , and stand.on my feet and find my God given.place .. Thru taking one day at a time , and having SAFE PEOPLE and SAFE PLACES to be broken and finally let walls down , learn to trust and allow people to love me ,and allowing God to begin to heal me and do what only He can do . I learned, I have a choice to get better .. And now living a life of health and happiness and love , and walking with Jesus daily and knowing who I am , my worth and value and my authority in Jesus .. I have taken back my life and now help and teach other woman to do the same .. That no matter or past, where we have been or what we have done, God loves us and it’s not too late, we are made. I AM the image of Christ. He makes all. things new, and if we allow Him, everything the enemy has meant for harm God will turn for good !!! There is life after addiction and abuse, but it’s up to us to choose …. ” Thank you in advance for joining us for this special occasion LIVE right here on Facebook or your favorite social media platform. Show notes at http://hellotechpros.com/brandy-semore-technology/ Key Takeaways When you have women in leadership positions in technology, businesses see an increase in productivity and profit. Sometimes men stop talking shop when women workers walk in the room. Women built the first computer. In the 1980s, women dropped out out of tech jobs and STEM degrees. 35% of computing jobs filled by female workers in the U.S has dropped to 26% today. Women as a whole have to be guarded about what they say about their careers to not damage the relationships with their male colleagues. Many women in technology are introverts and don't like speaking out. Groups like OKWIT are connecting women in a safe environment to talk about these issues. Women are starting to feel empowered. They are asking for raises, asking for promotions and getting in leadership. Women in technology starts at home as parents. Introduce girls to technology, Legos, telescopes, microscopes, Scratch camps. High school admins need to introduce girls to tech opportunities and STEM activities. Collegiate professors and administrators need to make females feel comfortable and welcome. Don't say things to make a girl feel bad about herself for being interested in STEM. When planning an offsite event, include activities that are more inclusive. Men tend to ask for raises and promotions more while women wait. Managers need to be aware of this and look across the entire talent pool. Resources Mentioned OKWIT Ada Lovelace Scratch Osmo Starter Kit Osmo Genius Kit Osmo Coding Kit
