As we head towards Christmas, David Skidmore concludes his preaching series draw us closer to Christ! This week, David takes us deeper into the joy that is found only in a deep relationship, only in abiding in Jesus! -- David Skidmore - December 19, 2021
Sure, "A Day In The Life" is ok, and "Tomorrow Never Knows" is fine, but only one Beatles album closes with maybe their greatest song, "Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand". It was certainly Something New for Capitol to close their third Beatles album in German, not to mention generously including 5 songs fans in '64 had already purchased a few weeks beforehand. (#NowOnCapitol!) And yet, because it's The Freaking Beatles, it's such a fun and uniquely Capitol album. Tony and T.J. fawn over this million-seller and along the way ask the hard questions they don't address in Liverpool, like:
As we head towards Christmas, David Skidmore will be preaching three sermons to draw us closer to Christ! This week, David takes us across the Scriptures to help us open our hearts to the kind of Joy God wants to offer us through Jesus. Even though everywhere in Bethlehem was full, the innkeeper made room for Mary and Joseph, and in so doing made room for the birth of the Messiah! -- David Skidmore - December 12, 2021
As we head towards Christmas, David Skidmore will be preaching three sermons to draw us closer to Christ! This week, David looks at the story of Mary, anchored in her standing at the cross in John 19. He considers how the things she had treasured in her heart throughout her life while raising Jesus allowed her to not lose heart when things seemed the bleakest. In the same way, following Jesus will strengthen our hearts and prepare us for all the nasty that tries to drag us down. -- David Skidmore - December 5, 2021
The creator, the hero, the explorer: these are just some of the archetypes made famous by Carl Jung that inspired the latest album from Chicago's Grammy award-winning Third Coast Percussion. Created in collaboration with classical guitarist Sérgio Assad and composer-performer Clarice Assad, Archetypes is a sonic exploration of the human experience. Taped live at the 2021 Chicago Humanities Festival, our conversation with musicians Clarice Assad and David Skidmore features an exploration of the creative process and an interactive discussion on David's dream. Clarice Assad is a Grammy-nominated composer, celebrated pianist, inventive vocalist, and educator. David Skidmore is a performer and Executive Director with Third Coast Percussion, a GRAMMY Award-winning percussion quartet based in Chicago. Move over twice! It's Part 2 of the runaway train that is The Untitled Beatles Podcast as it careens around the Let It Be 50th anniversary box set. This week T.J. and Tony wax ecstatic about Side Two's 2021 mixes then trade favorite studio outtakes. Also, they grumble about what was curiously left off, though they don't know why they're moaning. Along the way they ask:
Through a mix of Scripture and stories, David presents the message of the Cross in light of a world that often presents us with treats that turn out to be tricks. While the cross may seem foolish to the world around us, Jesus wants to give us more than we could ever imagine! -- David Skidmore - October 31, 2021

The topic: Producing any podcast series is a journey featuring plenty of twists and turns. And producing a series on U.S.-China relations can be especially challenging considering such a vast intertwined history to be addressed, on top of all the modern divergent views, outright disputes, and key players. As we near the end of our own podcast series, “Searching for Common Ground,” Professor David Skidmore and I thought it made sense to compare notes with another duo who recently published their own U.S.-China podcast just over a year ago. Our guests: Matt Sheehan and Holly He are the team behind “Heartland Mainland: The Iowa China Podcast,” a 2020 production of the Chicago-based Paulson Institute's think tank, MacroPolo. Matt is a nonresident fellow at MacroPolo who has served as a foreign correspondent in China and previously lived on the mainland for more than five years. He researches and writes on the Sino-U.S. technology relationship and ties between California and China. He grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, studied political science at Stanford, and in 2018 was shortlisted for the Young China Watcher of the Year Award. In 2019 he published “The Transpacific Experiment,” a book exploring the pre-pandemic ties and tensions between Silicon Valley and China. Holly is a research associate at MacroPolo, where she also works in web analytics and multimedia production. She previously worked as a multimedia fellow for the Texas Tribune, scripted and edited documentaries for CNN International, and worked with the Kindling Group in Chicago. The topic: Often in this podcast series we focus on the big picture: Taiwan's relationship to the Mainland, the contrasting strategies of U.S. presidents in tackling trade, or the massive influence of technological expansion. But what about the details of playing out international relations on the ground in China, as a U.S. businessperson with decades of experience? What about a frontline view of the economic and cultural forces shaping the bilateral relationship while simultaneously reflecting its larger themes? What cues can we take from this history of everyday business and other interaction between our two countries that may identify common ground or a productive path forward despite a widening political divide? Our guest: Business and travel between the U.S. and China has been Kit Spangler's life. He's a man of two languages and cultures who only this year retired from a career focused on the bilateral relationship. Based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, most recently he worked as China strategy and business development director for Diamond V, a company (and Cargill subsidiary) producing animal feed additives to improve livestock health and nutrition. He previously worked in a series of roles that focused on the agricultural trade—specifically dairy and livestock. He began his journey as an Iowa farmer who studied Chinese language and culture to expand his career options in the wake of the 1980s farm crisis. He has traveled throughout much of China and brings to this conversation a wealth of firsthand anecdotes about U.S.-China business relationships, agriculture, food security, trade, and citizen diplomacy. The topic: U.S.-China relations rest upon more than the formalized chess moves of presidents and diplomats. Far greater in scope and depth are the people-to-people exchanges in business, education, arts and culture, journalism, nonprofits, tourism, and so much more. These societal ties provide ballast for U.S.-China relations even when the political situation is at its most tense. Iowa's people-to-people connections with China are particularly strong and extend back nearly half a century, continuing a tradition in which Iowa also helped to play a moderating force with the Soviet Union at the height of the Cold War. How have these connections been built and sustained over time? What forms do they take? How do Iowans and their Chinese counterparts benefit from such ties? Our guest: Kim Heidemann is an international programming consultant, adjunct instructor at Des Moines Area Community College, staff member with the Republic of Kosovo Consulate in Des Moines, and an expert administrator in citizen diplomacy. During her 15 years with Iowa Sister States, she traveled extensively and helped to shape the grassroots ties between Iowa and several partner nations, including China's Hebei province, as "old friend" Xi Jinping returned to visit in 2012, triggering a heightened phase of trade and cultural exchange between the two nations. The topic: Huawei, ZTE, TikTok, WeChat: The list of Chinese high-tech companies that have been characterized as threats to American national security continues to grow. But how real are such purported threats? And are efforts to digitally "decouple" from China realistic? Are there alternative ways to address security concerns? Our guest: Tom Lairson is emeritus professor of political science and international business at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. Tom received his doctorate in political science and a bachelor's degree from the University of Kentucky. He was also the first Ford Foundation professor of international relations at the Institute for International Relations in Hanoi, Vietnam, and founder of the Rollins in Shanghai program. The topic: In the wake of the Trump-era trade war and COVID-19 pandemic, what will become of the heavy ag trade between the world's two superpowers? What are the primary food security concerns for each nation? How do other large international markets such as Brazil affect the relationship? How might the post-pandemic marketplace reshape the dynamic? Is it still possible for agriculture to act as a moderating force on the political relationship between the two nations? Our guest: Bill Niebur, president and chief operating officer of Hi Fidelity Genetics in Des Moines, is a seed and crop scientist and consultant who has spent decades working in research and development in both the U.S. and China, most of that time with DuPont and DuPont Pioneer. He began his career as a corn geneticist in Illinois before extensive work in both Europe and Asia. The topic: Former Iowa Governor and U.S. Ambassador Terry Branstad has a history of about 40 years with China, most notably his recent service in Beijing where he led negotiations on everything from the trade war to nuclear tensions with North Korea. Branstad's unique perspective on U.S.-China relations is based on decades of promoting economic, cultural, and civic ties while representing the agricultural state of Iowa. This Iowa farm boy ended up with a career capstone that included high-level negotiations between two superpowers on controversial issues (including national security, human rights, and the pandemic) and close personal ties with the leadership in both the U.S. and China. Our guest: Branstad, 74, is not only a farm boy but also an attorney and the longest-serving governor in American history. In 2017, President Donald Trump appointed him U.S. ambassador to China. Branstad offered unique personal credentials beyond Iowa's robust agricultural trade with China: The governor in 1985 welcomed a young Xi Jinping to Iowa when the future Chinese president was a provincial official leading a routine trade delegation. That inauspicious connection years later would qualify Branstad as an “old friend” to the powerful leader of an emerging superpower. Branstad served a little more than three years in Beijing, returning in the autumn of 2020 ahead of the American presidential election. The topic: There's little question that China's rising power poses new challenges for American foreign policy-makers. But to what purposes does China intend to put its newfound economic and military capabilities? Do Chinese leaders seek to overturn the basic rules and institutions of the existing international order? Do they wish to challenge the global leadership of the United States? A Chinese scholar offers surprising answers. Our guest: Wu Xinbo is professor and dean of the Institute of International Studies and director of the Center for American Studies at Fudan University. He teaches and researches China's foreign and security policy, Sino-U.S. relations, and U.S. Asia-Pacific policy. Professor Wu is the author of a half dozen major books on U.S.-China relations and Chinese foreign policy, including, most recently, "China and the Asia-Pacific Chess Game" (Fudan University Press, 2017). His work has also appeared in English language journals such as International Affairs, The Washington Quarterly, Journal of Contemporary China, Contemporary Southeast Asia, and Asian Survey. The topic: As China's military modernization shifts the balance of power in East Asia, the naval forces of the U.S. and China find themselves facing off in tense encounters across the maritime routes off China's coastline. How can the dangers of military conflict and escalation be controlled as disputes related to the South China Sea, the East China Sea, and Taiwan play themselves out? What are the roles to be played by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and other coalitions? Can a security architecture be constructed that reconciles the core interests of all players? Our guest: Professor Zhu Feng is Executive Director of the China Center for Collaborative Studies of the South China Sea, Nanjing University. The topic: Journalists serve as critical intermediaries between American and Chinese societies, reporting and interpreting events for audiences in both countries. Yet China has become an increasingly difficult place for American journalists as Chinese authorities have denied visas, placed restrictions on activities, and leveled criticism at Western media coverage of China. In turn, Chinese journalists have been forced to leave the United States. How do American journalists on the China beat cope with such challenges? How can outsiders gain information about such charged stories as the expanding detention camps in Xinjiang? Our guest: Austin Ramzy is a Hong Kong-based reporter for The New York Times, focusing on coverage of the city as well as regional and breaking news. He previously covered major events around Asia from Taipei and Beijing. He has covered the 2015 election in Myanmar, Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, and mass protest movements in Hong Kong and Taiwan, where he was based in 2014. Previously, Austin reported for Time magazine (2003-2013) from both Hong Kong and Beijing. What does it mean to have a heartbeat of hope? Let's examine Isaiah 61 to find out how we can live with hope as our heartbeat.
David talks from his newest book "Unstuck" about how to move forward in life. This talk will encourage you to get past the things that are holding you back and live in your purpose.
Listen in today as David continues the discussion on how to become unstuck. He talks about the importance of listening to the voice of God instead of the voice of the word and the tapes we replay in our minds. He also talks about the importance of burning the ships in your life to move forward and not being held back by the past. Be encouraged.
Phil 2 & John 13 - Jesus chose to use His power and authority to raise others up by lowering himself and becoming like a servant, like nothing. How might we, especially white Christians as our eyes are finally opened to systemic racism, use whatever power we have, great or small, to be like Jesus and lower ourselves to lift up others? -- David Skidmore - June 7, 2020
1 Samuel 14 - Faith isn't about sitting back and passively waiting on God. Like Jonathan, we say, "Perhaps the Lord will act in our behalf," and take a Warrior's step towards God and His will for our lives and the Kingdom. -- David Skidmore - May 24, 2020
In Psalm 34 & 56, David speaks to a painful experience of being chased and fleeing to the Philistine city of Gath, but finding hope in the Lord. We too, often expecting only pain, will find that God shows up and brings hope into our painful experiences. -- David Skidmore - May 31, 2020
Instead of sitting back in passivity, David took a bold step of courage to fight the giant Goliath in 1 Samuel 17:20-51. We too are in the midst of a battle, and God wants us to be Warriors for His Kingdom. Will you step into the calling God has for your life? -- David Skidmore - May 17, 2020
At the wedding in Cana in John 2:1-12, the attendants obey Jesus and bring the huge water jars. Their act of obedience leads to Jesus' first miracle, water transformed to wine. God wants to transform you, too, if you're willing to follow. Obedience is God's invitation to transformation. -- David Skidmore - May 10, 2020
Jesus talks with the Samaritan Woman at the well in John 4:1-26 and invites her to drink from Living Water. What well are you drinking from? The life giving Jesus or one of the many places that leave us thirsty again? -- David Skidmore - May 3, 2020
In Isaiah 43:1-3, God tells us He made us, we belong to Him, and He will bring us through our fears. In a time when fear can run rampant, are we living afraid of this world or trusting our God? -- David Skidmore - April 26, 2020
On this episode I sat with David Skidmore, he is the Creative Director for SALLT. David is at the helm of leading their forthcoming podcast network, video design, magazine, music, and digital space. He is an inspirational speaker who hoists sails and starts fires. David is known for his humorous delivery and passionate communication style. For over a decade, David is a sought-after communicator for events ranging from small gatherings in the mountains to crowds of thousands.David is a storyteller, vision shaper, and connector. He is the founder of LeaderGrowth, Lion Leader, and The Clarity Workshop where he helps people clarify their vision to create the life they want. David also coaches speakers professionally. He holds a degree from Oklahoma Christian University. David is one of the organizers of TEDxOklahomaCity. We sat for over an hour talking life, leadership and Tim Grover. Such a great interview, one of the most unique ones I've done because for the middle third of the podcast David started asking me questions which I loved. Very rarely do I get to share my thoughts on topics and this conversation was for sure more of a chat about life than an interview and story tell about my guest. On this edition of The Arts Section, host Gary Zidek talks to Third Coast Percussion executive director David Skidmore about the Grammy-winning ensemble's pivot to streaming concerts. Later in the program, Gary catches up with the owner of Chicago-based Volumes Book Café to learn more about the challenges facing independent bookstores during the pandemic. The Dueling Critics, Kerry Reid and Jonathan Abarbanel, stopped by remotely to talk about a new streaming production that's part Shakespeare and part Super Mario Brothers. And we'll hear how suburban comedians are dealing with the current restrictions.
What are you magnifying today? What's getting all of your focus? God invites us to look through the telescope and live for His glory! Isaiah 26:8 -- David Skidmore - April 19, 2020
How do we bridge the gap between heaven and earth? How do we get in fellowship with God? Not on our own efforts but through the Cross of Christ. The cross was the ultimate expression of God's love for his creation. The Cross = Love. -- David Skidmore - April 12, 2020
Building a good friendship takes time and effort, and building a friendship with Jesus is similar in many ways. Today's sermon will explore five things we can start doing today to create a deep and meaningful relationship with Jesus. -- David Skidmore - March 29, 2020
In part 1 of this interview, our Creative Director, David Skidmore sits down with Wes as they talk about discovering your purpose, and painful lessons along the way.
Hebrews 12:1-3 Reminds us to not give up, to remember that we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses, to keep running the race set before us. David reminds us when you feel like giving up, remember you are surrounded, throw off what is holding you back, run your race with perseverance, fix your eyes on Jesus, find the joy in what is ahead and consider how he chose you. -- David Skidmore - March 1, 2020 --- David refers to this video at 9:22 - https://youtu.be/QSBJxtEed1s

Percussionist Cameron Leach and I have a great show for you today! In addition to some great practice tips, Cameron elaborates on some very important topics, including how to clearly communicate to our audience through intentional and empathetic performing, why students must take ownership of their own learning experience, and why musicians need to be great friends to each other! I love Cameron's perspective on those topics, and I hope you enjoy our discussion! Cameron elaborates on: His journey to a solo career – starting in drumcor, doing a music education degree, and transitioning to performance after a chance encounter How he organizes his practice – having to handle so many instruments Why he likes to practice hungry What it is like to have to learn a wide variety of percussion instruments Ho he transfers the sound concepts from one instrument to the next Different practice modes in practice: Learning mode “Emoting” mode Why he thinks it's important to consider how you are sending your musical message and how it is received by your listeners Clear emotional communication How documenting his practice on video helped him release stress and was a creative outlet Why it's important to keep the sound of the hall in mind when we practice How recording ourselves helps us narrow our focus on specific elements in our practice His 3 key words – inquisitive, intentional, empathetic How students must take ownership of their learning experience (SCHOOLS CAN'T TECH YOU EVERYTHING!) during their degree and remain inquisitive AFTER they've graduated (Pssst! We're all lifelong learners!!!!)
