I didn't have the financial understanding to really put a calculator to it, and then the company also literally almost went bankrupt at the end of the 3 years and so I said, you know somehow this cannot be right, you can't run a business with such a short-term horizon.20 YEARS IN PERSPECTIVE:Going to INSEAD, I had two clear views in my mind - I wanted to work for a family owned, or a privately held business that offered me a real international career.Altogether 9 years abroad, we came back to Holland, a family of 5, which was probably the hardest move we ever did, going back to what you thought was home.I'm still with SHV, almost twenty years, I am on my ninth or tenth job at the moment. I've worked in cash & carry retail, switched to the energy division, liquefied gas, I've been on the board of SHV, and now I am CEO of Nutreco, which is one of the global leaders in animal nutrition.ON TOPIC: Fossil fuels, energy transition, agriculture, animal nutrition, sustainabilityEnergy transition is probably one of the 2 or 3 large transitions that we are going through and that we will have to go through. We really started to drive, I would say, a twofold course towards sustainability: 1) we set the goal to become a fully sustainable, so a fully renewable provider of LPG. And the second leg is to provide other sources of energy, like solar energy.I've had my fair share of industry conferences, where there's on the one hand a group of companies that really wants to change; there's also a group of companies that are either in denial, or that they cling on to vested interests, or they see no need, or they see no opportunity. And so that brings tension, but I think it also can bring a lot of creativity“You know, we are about to launch the first totally renewable LPG in the world”This is why in-person education cannot be replicated in another formThe purpose of our company is feeding the futureAgriculture is responsible for about 25% of all emissions in the world. The system that we have today is so super-efficient, for any new technology it is really challenging at the start to beat those economies of scale. We're trying to really work on creating more sustainable solutions for current farming practices and at the same time we are investing and there I dare to say we're at the forefront of our industry. We're investing also in creating feed for lab grown meat. That is an industry that, in the next 5 to 10 years will start to grow and I think once it starts growing it will grow exponentially.Where we now provide nutrition to animals, we would then provide nutrition to cells. These cells, they need to eat, and so we provide, what we know about feeding an animal is pretty useful to feed a cell. All THINGS INSEAD AND GIVING BACKLife is about learning, earning, returning and I didn't want to wait with returning until I stopped earning.INSEAD for me has been – firstly, it was an amazing year to be together with such a great energy, I don't think I've ever seen the positive energy around me that was there during that year. People were so motivated, people were in for fun, people were in for serious things, creative ideas, the international dynamics. But it also really helped me make a jump in my career. I'm honestly convinced that I wouldn't be where I am today without INSEAD.

20 YEARS IN PERSPECTIVE:I never intended to start a space rocket company.I started to literally Google “How do you build a moon rocket”Consulting has never been my kind of thing, you don't have enough responsibility I think in consulting for execution, I quite like the responsibility of execution.Rule 3 was “Don't fuck it up”.CEO role in that kind of company is 24 / 7 / 365.Stubbornness and stamina are really massively important in any entrepreneurial task.“You're really stubborn. You don't give up. You don't quit, you just keep pushing, keep pushing, until eventually something breaks in your favor and you get there.”The smallest mistake can result in mission failure.I think I kind of knew this intuitively, but someone should tell you explicitly you can do anything.I kind of see success as stepping stones in a way, you need to achieve this, to achieve that, to achieve the ultimate goal.ON TOPIC: OF SPACE, OBRITS, ROCKETS AND POTATO LAUNCHERSI do expect people to land on Mars while I'm still alive, assuming I survive another decade or so.Your mobile phone has something like a million times more computing power than, the Apollo that took people to the Moon.Q: “Could you do something like this?” A: “Yes, but have you got any money?”Orbex today, even with my biased rose-tinted sunglasses on, it is quite objectively viewed as the leading player in a new private space launch industry in Europe right now. Most of the applications of space technology are geared towards driving a better world on the surface of Planet Earth. And what that drives then is a lower economic cost to get things into space. And that's always been the real barrier to getting lots of things into space. To lift a kilo through the gravity well of Earth into orbit is very, very expensive. Once you're in orbit, it's relatively easy to get to other places, but getting into orbit is the expensive, difficult part of space access.I see the gap, the physical gap between Earth and Mars as being the equivalent of the Atlantic ocean, going back a few centuries.I think we're at the dawn of a really new chapter in human history, where we're not just talking about oceans and airplanes, we're talking about interplanetary things in a genuinely realistic way.Space is, I've learned, all about margins - safety margins, margins for performance, margins for mistakes and recovery of mistakes.Getting to orbit is a much, much harder problem than suborbital flight. The difficult part is achieving that velocity and it's a lot, it's tens of thousands of kilometres per hour to get to orbit.Imagine if every time you flew to New York from London you have to throw away the airplaneReusability, that's something we focus on at Orbex as well, reusability and environmental sustainability. The annual volume of Rocket Launches is the global equivalent of the entire airline traffic globally, it's a massive problem, because of that black soot that gets deposited by nonclean combustion of fossil fuels.References, mentions:UK Space Agency, European Space Agency, Orbex, Ariane 5, “Zen and the art of the motor motorcycle maintenance” by Robert M. Det nye superteleskop, James Webb Space Telescope, blev endelig sendt afsted i december 2021, over 30 år siden projektet begyndte. Kind of an oxymoron to run a supposedly clean electric vehicle manufacturer and a dirty space x company at the same time....Can Bio Propane be the solution to keeping space exploration clean?“Climate change is real, and we don't want to make it worse,” said Chris Larmour, chief executive of British rocket maker Orbex. The start-up, founded in 2015 and which has a contract with U.S. launch integrator TriSept Corp., uses bio-propane that it says can cut CO2 emissions by 90% compared with traditional launch fuel.We would love to get Elon Musk on our show to discuss how propane can do that!Contact us today to be a sponsor of our show Tom@rmpropane.org
