Christine knows travel is one of the best things of life in spite of all of its challenges. Whether you are traveling within your own city or around the world. Learn the art of serendipity, enjoy the journey, and tackle problems one at a time. Maybe you cannot get out there and find serendipity, but you can cultivate a mindset that accepts boldness, openness, and whimsicality. There are a lot of great things planned but the joys of traveling are spontaneous events that cannot be structured in a schedule. For the modern traveler, serendipity is that one thing that every journey needs, yet nobody can plan. Every travel story needs a plot twist: an accident, an accident of fate, a lucky twist that leads to a new world. Today's guest is Patricia Schultz. Patricia is the author of the #1 New York Times best seller 1000 Places to See Before You Die, and 1000 Places to See in the United States and Canada Before you Die. Most recently she is the author of Why We Travel. For years Patricia Schultz has been telling us where to travel. Now, in telling us why to travel, she reveals what makes travel such a richly rewarding experience. For full show notes and to access resources mentioned in this episode, head to https://www.lotussojourns.com/podcast-episodes/episode102Learn more about Lotus Sojourns and ways to be a part of the community here.Find Lotus Sojourns on Facebook, or join the Lotus Sojourns Collective, our FB community for like-hearted women.Follow us on Instagram: @lotussojourns or @souloftravelpodcastLOVE these conversations...support the production of this podcast by making a donation here! Patricia Schultz of “1000 Places to See Before You Die” fame has authored a different kind of book this time. “WHY WE TRAVEL: 100 Reasons to Get Up and Go” pairs beautiful color photos with pearls of wisdom, lists, and essential travel tips and focuses not on where or when to travel, but on how travel enriches us and why we choose to travel. She told me why packing tips are a whole lot more than what you put in your suitcase, what the first thing is she does when visiting a new city, and why an assignment to cover “The Game of Thrones” in Northern Ireland was so challenging. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/booktalk-diana-korte/message

Kathryn interviews Author Jeffrey Breslow.Starting with a literal bang, Jeffrey Breslow tells the gripping account of how the inventor held his company together after an employee opened fire in the Marvin Glass and Associates conference room in 1976. The gunman killed two of the Chicago firm's partners and an employee and critically wounded two more employees before killing himself. He missed taking a bullet only because the gunman didn't see him. The gunman left behind a hit list of fourteen names. He later learned his name was second on the list. After the shooting, and despite his youth, Breslow's partners voted him in as managing partner. Thrust into leadership by default, he faced incredible challenges, including consoling the families of the victims, dealing with the staff's PTSD, and rebuilding a sense of safety and morale. He spent more than 41 years inventing toys and games including Simon, Operation, Guesstures, the Evel Knievel Motorcycle, Mousetrap, and UNO Attack and is the only toy designer to win the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval twice. He was inducted into the Toy Industry Hall of Fame in 1998 Kathryn also interviews Author Patricia Schultz.Pairing beautiful, transportive color photos with pearls of wisdom, lists, and essential travel tips, Patricia Schultz focuses not on where or when to travel, but on how travel enriches us and why we choose to do it. Leading with the idea that travel is food for the soul, Schultz passionately (and convincingly) makes the case that it's one of the most richly rewarding experiences we can have, whether we travel near or far, in person or virtually. Alongside these evocative images are Schultz's own stories of some of her most rewarding trips, like going in search of the Northern Lights in Alaska's Arctic Circle, exploring Florence in her post-collegiate days, and finding her most lasting memory of a trip to Zimbabwe in a classroom of five-year-olds. She's the NYTimes bestselling author of 1,000 Places to See Before You Die and has written for the WSJ, Condé Nast Traveler, Travel Weekly and Frommers and Berlitz Travel Guides

The year at home: Patricia Schultz on the serendipity of travel The biggest travel story of the week was the anniversary of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the subsequent global shutdown of travel. To mark “where we were,” this time last year, editor in chief Arnie Weissmann wrote his column on the recollections of travel executives and colleagues. One of the people he reached out to was Patricia Schultz, bestselling author of “1,000 Places to See Before You Die.” But our subsequent podcast with Schultz focuses less on the shutdown and more on the serendipity of spontaneous travel experiences. Instead of spending the shutdown updating “1,000 Places,” Schultz during has been writing a different kind of book, one about how curiosity and open-mindedness can take a regular travel experience and elevate it to the unforgettable. In recounting travel memories of Morocco and New York and how travel experiences great and small can change your perspective, Schultz’s observations may re-ignite your wanderlust once more. Ladies! Please join our Be Bold Facebook Group! Today's conversation is with Beth Massa. Beth is a sustainable packaging entrepreneur. She is, as we all should be, very concerned about the environment and our impact upon the planet. Beth is creating a first of its kind retail store, Ozarka, that doesn’t carry any products in single use containers. She believes big changes need to happen with the manufacturers and producers of products and is doing something about it in a very direct way by addressing the problem in her adopted home of Amsterdam. Until you really start paying attention, you probably don’t realize how much trash you’re generating using single use containers. My awareness was only heightened after watching (and being horrified by) the documentary, A Plastic Ocean. I watched probably the first 20 minutes and it completely changed things for me. Beth is realistic in believing that people aren’t necessarily going to make big changes on their own. She wants change to happen with the manufacturers and producers of the products. And her store will only carry goods in containers that are not single use. This is a pretty bold move. Taking on an industry. But the other part of her story is her move to Amsterdam. She was so solid in knowing that she wanted to live there that she spent a couple of years figuring out how to make it happen. That singular focus of wanting something so badly that all of your waking time is spent figuring out how to make it reality is often a theme here. I know that feeling and it’s likely that you know that feeling, too, for something that you’ve wanted to do. So you’ll hear how she made that happen. Ladies! Please join our Be Bold Facebook Group! Today’s conversation is with Patricia Schultz. You may not be immediately familiar with her name but no doubt you know her by her books, 1,000 Places to See Before You Die and 1,000 Places to See in the US and Canada Before You Die. I’ve known Patricia for a long time as we often speak at the same events—the Travel and Adventure Shows which happen throughout the country from January through March--and although it’s been a couple of years for me, the New York Times Travel Show where Patricia speaks each year. This was the first time that we got to sit down and really chat. And I have to tell you that this was one of the most wonderful conversations I’ve had on this podcast. It’s probably because we are such kindred spirits. Patricia is a true lover and advocate of travel like no one I know. Not only has she been to many countries (she wasn’t sure exactly of the number) but she believes in her soul that everyone should travel and that there’s no excuse for not going somewhere. In this episode, we talk extensively about travel from many angles and many facets of it. I learned about the incredible serendipity that occurred for these books to have come to fruition (and how many years it took for her first book to be completed) and then go back in time and talk about how she got started in travel. And that includes family trips “down the shore” (as we say in New Jersey) and also her first trip abroad at 15 and she talks about how scared she was at that time and the little mishap that occurred that almost sent her off on the wrong destination. Patricia’s got a wonderful formula that she suggests to people for how they might travel and I also learned what she thinks about carry-on vs. checked luggage (you might be as surprised as I was). If you’re new to the podcast, I encourage you to go back to previous episodes where I highlight other interesting and truly courageous women doing extraordinary things. You’re really going to find some amazing conversations with these ladies. If you’re a runner you might be super inspired by ultra-marathoner Sabrina Seher (that’s episode 43), you can hear a really touching life story by musician Laura Love (episode 32) or if you’re looking for ways to get healthier listen to wellness coach Sapana Chandra (episode 18) or Dr. Robyn Benson (and she’s on episodes 11 and 50). Also, don’t miss my conversation with Travel Expert and TV Host Samantha Brown (episode 36).
