SynopsisOn today's date in 1953, Pageant, a new work for symphonic winds premiered with the University of Miami Band. It was written by American composer Vincent Persichetti, who conducted the performance, as he did the work's New York City debut later that same year with the Goldman Band, then America's premiere professional wind ensemble, who had commissioned the work. It might seem odd that an amateur, student ensemble should premiere a work commissioned for professionals, but in the 1950s, when the U.S. college system was rapidly expanding, the savvy Mr. Persichetti was ready and willing to supply both students and professionals with more than a dozen new wind band scores to perform. He put it this way: “I find wonderful performances in the universities around the country. They may be students, but … they'll find something there that you maybe didn't quite even dream of, and make something of it, whereas sometimes the professional orchestras don't always get it as quickly. [The student musicians] have to work harder, but they do this all through high school and college, and by the time they get to the end of college they know what music is about and can phrase and shape it with some conviction.”Music Played in Today's ProgramVincent Persichetti (1915-1987): Pageant; Winds of the London Symphony Orchestra; David Amos, conductor; Naxos 8.570123

SynopsisOn today's date in 1757, the Italian composer Domenico Scarlatti died in Madrid. He was 71 years old, and for the last 38 years of his life was employed at the court of Princess Maria Barbara, first in her native Portugal, and then, when the Princess married the heir to the Spanish throne, in Madrid.Although Domenico could very well have stayed in Italy and become a famous opera composer like his father, Alessandro Scarlatti, Domenico spent the better part of his life composing over 600 virtuoso sonatas for Maria Barbara. Only a handful of these were published during his lifetime. In the 19th century, Liszt and Brahms took the trouble to hunt down additional Scarlatti sonatas in manuscript, but the bulk of them remained unpublished and unknown until a complete edition was published in the 20th century. While not coming anywhere close to matching Scarlatti's output, one 20th century American composer, the Philadelphia-born Vincent Persichetti, composed ten harpsichord sonatas of his own. The growing number of modern-day harpsichordists has meant that in addition to the wealth of OLD music for the instrument, many contemporary composers have followed Persichetti's example, and are writing NEW works for this old instrument.Music Played in Today's ProgramDomenico Scarlatti (1685 - 1757) Sonata in c, K. 363 Elaine Comparone, harpsichord Laurel 838Vincent Pershichetti (1915 - 1987) Sonata No. 4 Elaine Comparone, harpsichord Laurel 838
Synopsis If you're a baby boomer who played in a high school or college band, you'll probably remember the “Divertimento for Band” by the American composer, Vincent Persichetti, music that premiered on today's date in 1950, with the composer conducting the Goldman Band. Persichetti didn't envision his “Divertimento” as a band work, per se. At the start, it was just some woodwind figures accentuated by brass and percussion. When Persichetti realized that violins and cellos just didn't seem to fit in the picture, “Divertimento” began to take shape in his mind as a work for winds, brass and percussion alone. Persichetti went on to write a dozen more compositions for concert band. Beyond his works for band, Persichetti was a prolific composer of keyboard, chamber and orchestra pieces. He once claimed that since musical ideas often came to him in his car, he liked to tape a piece of music paper to his steering wheel, so he could jot down ideas and keep his eyes on the road at the same time. Luckily for other residents of his hometown of Philadelphia, apparently this practice didn't result in any head-on collisions! Synopsis In the years following the end of World War II, the “baby boom” led to a dramatic rise in the number of high school and college music programs across the country. By the mid-1950s, a number of well-known American composers started receiving commissions from these schools for new works for wind band. In the past half-century, the Symphony for Band, by American composer Vincent Persichetti, has been one of the most frequently performed. It was commissioned by the Washington University Chamber Band, and received its first performance by the ensemble in St. Louis, Mo., on today's date in 1956. In keeping with this tradition, in the late 1990s the American Composers Forum started commissioning major composers to write new works for middle-school bands. The series was dubbed BandQuest, and in addition to new scores by composers like Chen Yi, Michael Colgrass, Libby Larsen, Robert X. Rodriguez, and Alvin Singleton, the series offers music teachers interactive content, which places each piece of music in a wider cultural and historical context. This music is from Alegre, by Cuban-born composer Tania Leon. “Alegre” is a Spanish word meaning “joyful,” and Leon's piece is meant to demonstrate the link in Latin culture between music and dance. That's something the New York-based Leon knows more than a little about — she was a founding member and the first music director of the Dance Theatre of Harlem. A music educator as well as a composer, she also set up the theater's music school and orchestra. Synopsis On today's date in 1985, a brand-new piece of music had its premiere in a brand-new concert hall in Minnesota. The American composer Paul Fetler wrote his jaunty "Capriccio" to celebrate both the first concert of the 7th season of conductor Jay Fishman's Minneapolis Chamber Symphony and the new Ordway Music Theater in St. Paul, which had just opened its doors to the public that year. "When Jay Fishman commissioned me to compose a dedicatory work for their opening concert," wrote Fetler, "I immediately thought of a composition which would be light-hearted, buoyant, and playful. I felt for once that the 'serious' contemporary music scene (which I often find to be 'super-serious') could stand a bit of contrast. Perhaps the time is ripe to have a few pieces which are less 'profound,' something with the flair of Rossini to divert the listener from the 'daily burdens of life.'" And Fetler concluded: " There is no story behind the 'Capriccio,' but the whimsy and playfulness are intended to suggest a musical caper of a kind. To bring this out, I made primary use of the woodwinds, in particular the flute and piccolo, with their skips, runs, and arpeggios." The most prominent pathological manifestation is a selective loss of medium-sized spiny neurons of the striatum. The disease is caused by a CAG repeat expansion in the IT15 gene, which elongates a stretch of polyglutamine at the amino-terminal of the HD protein, Huntingtin (Htt). Despite the accumulation of an impressive amount of data on the molecular basis of neurodegeneration, no therapeutic treatments are available and new pharmacological targets are needed. Transposable Elements (TEs) are mobile genetic elements that constitute a large fraction of eukaryotic genomes. Retrotransposons (RTEs) replicate through an RNA intermediate and represent approximately 40% and 30% of the human and Drosophila genomes. Mounting evidence suggests that mammalian RTEs are normally active during neurogenesis and may be involved in diseases of the nervous system. Here we show that TE expression and mobilization are increased in a Drosophila melanogaster HD model. By inhibiting TE mobilization with Reverse Transcriptase inhibitors, polyQ-dependent eye neurodegeneration and genome instability in larval brains are rescued and fly lifespan is increased. These results suggest that TE activation may be involved in polyQ-induced neurotoxicity and a potential pharmacological target. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info

On today's date in 1757, the Italian composer and harpsichordist Domenico Scarlatti died in Madrid. He was 71 years old, and for the last 38 years of his life had been employed at the court of Princess Maria Barbara, first in her native Portugal, and then, when the Princess married the heir to the Spanish throne, in Madrid. Although Domenico could very well have stayed in Italy and become a famous opera composer like his father, Alessandro Scarlatti, Domenico spent the better part of his life composing over 600 virtuoso sonatas for Maria Barbara. Like Scarlartti, Persichetti was a virtuoso keyboard performer, and wrote showcase pieces for the piano and organ in addition to the harpsichord. The growing number of modern-day harpsichordists has meant that in addition to the wealth of old music for the instrument, an increasing number of contemporary composers have followed Persichetti's example, and are writing new works for this old instrument.
If you're a baby boomer who played in a high school or college band, you'll probably remember the "Divertimento for Band" by the American composer, Vincent Persichetti, music that premiered on today's date in 1950, with the composer conducting the Goldman Band. Persichetti didn't envision his "Divertimento" as a band work, per se. At the start, it was just some woodwind figures accentuated by brass and percussion. When Persichetti realized that violins and cellos just didn't seem to fit in the picture, "Divertimento" began to take shape in his mind as a work for winds, brass and percussion alone. Persichetti went on to write a dozen more compositions for concert band. These pieces quickly entered the repertory of the thousands of high school and college bands that sprang up across the country in the years following World War II, institutions peopled by baby boomers, who, like Pesichetti's band compositions, were born in the 1950s and 60s. Luckily for other residents of his hometown of Philadelphia, this apparently didn't result in any head-on collisions—but kids, don't try this at home!

The Good Deeds Project is a global movement to inspire, empower and ignite great change, bringing all people together in oneness and in peace. We begin with one good deed at a time. When we ask the question, “what good deed can I do right now?” we immediately move out of our own head and into an awareness of others through our heart. When we take part in helping someone else, we not only potentially become a hero for that moment, we also physically, mentally and emotionally feel good afterwards. We never know what challenges or struggles a person may be having at a time they are in need of a helping hand. Offering a good deed can potentially save a life. The ripples are unspoken. VINTAGE SEASON PASS PODCAST: EPISODE #52- UNRELEASED PRESENTATION FROM MIDSUMMER SCREAM 2018--Long Beach, CA. MIDSUMMERSCREAM.ORG The future of the haunted attraction industry isn't just about new technologies or the latest props and gags; it's about young designers who are out there right now, learning from today's leaders as they create their own experiences and chart the course for their own success. On Sunday July 29, join Midsummer Scream's Creative Director, Rick West, as he introduces two up-and-coming designers that are part of Southern California's haunted attraction evolution, Opechee Haunt's Sam Kellman, and Murder House Productions' Aurora Persichetti. Kellman (age 15) has been actively designing small attractions since he was 7 years-old. When he was 9, Sam started designing his own home haunts on Opechee Way in Glendale. In the past few years, Sam has pushed his creative limits by incorporating high-tech components such as integrated customized phone apps for guests, and RFID-driven effects in his haunts, which have ranged from adult-oriented chills to family-friendly shows. This year, Sam brings a preview of his Donnie Darko-themed experience to Midsummer Scream's Hall of Shadows, giving guests a glimpse of an even bigger fan tribute he's got planned for Opechee Haunt this Halloween. Persichetti (age 21) took the SoCal haunt scene by storm in 2017 with her fan tribute home haunt based on the cult film Trick ‘r Treat. Previously, she led a team creating a home haunt in 2016 based on the Evil Dead. This particular home haunt in Thousand Oaks stunned fans who came from far and near to experience a theme park-quality attraction set up on a quiet street by a young lady who simply adores creating mazes and scaring the hell out of people. This fascinating panel discussion will include photos and footage of Opeeche and Murder House's attractions, and will give fans the opportunity to learn more about two of the industry's hottest up-and-coming designers as Rick asks Sam and Aurora what inspires them, what their process is as designers, and what comes next as they continue to mature and grow as haunters here in Los Angeles.

Along the way, he composed prolifically for the harpsichord, including sonatas and other works, which rendered him one of the 20th century’s most important composers for the instrument.
