When Your Child Makes Bad Choices Are you constantly feeling disappointed by your child's choices, wondering why they just won't listen? In this powerful, impromptu episode of The Impactful Parent podcast, your host, Kristina Campos, dives deep into the heart of parental disappointment and how we can flip the script to achieve a more harmonious relationship with our kids. If you have a strong-willed child or are parenting teenagers, this conversation is absolutely vital for you! Kristina unpacks the concept that often, the pain we feel when a child makes a bad choice is not a betrayal by them, but an expectation violation within ourselves. She breaks down the fascinating psychological concept of projection bias —the tendency to assume our kids think, care, and act based on our values instead of their own developing mental models and needs. As parents, we instill values, but as our teens seek autonomy, they inevitably begin to create their own value system. When their choices clash with ours—whether it's about screen time battles, academics/grades, or other instances of a teenager making bad choices—it's easy to take it personally. Kristina challenges us to move past the blame game. The key to influencing your child's behavior is to "observe more" and stop shutting down. Instead of asking, "Why aren't you listening?" we need to ask critical questions to truly understand their own values and needs behind their decision-making. By separating what your child does from what you wanted them to do, you can foster a stronger relationship and become a more impactful parent. Tune in for invaluable parenting advice that will help you let go of frustration, prevent you from losing the relationship with your kids, and build better communication with your child. Key takeaways from this episode: Why your parental expectations are letting you down, not your child. How to respond when your child's values are misaligned with your own. The critical shift from accusation to observation.   LINKS MENTIONED IN THE RECORDING https://theimpactfulparent.com/app Download the FREE Impactful Parent App! We talk a lot about how whiskey is made, mixed, marketed and just generally talked about. But not how it's distributed. Fortunately Angela Bosco is here to pull back the curtain on the often murky, sometimes deliberately opaque distribution system for alcohol in this country. She sits down with the band to talk about the three-tier system, building a brand, what a brand needs to do to get acquired, as well as some straight whiskey talk. What are people doing to keep this storied category innovative. And did the industry really make progress towards equity with the MeToo movement? Or did it just look like it did? Angela weighs in on what it's like to be a woman in what can often be the boys club of rye and bourbonPLUS it's our first show of October and you know what that means. When Alcohol is the only way to cope with motherhood Have you ever felt the pressure to be the "perfect mom"? It's a feeling so many of us can relate to, but for some, that pressure becomes an overwhelming burden that leads to a secret battle. In this powerful episode of The Impactful Parent podcast, host Kristina Campos sits down with Emily Roondo, author of the memoir "Wife, Mother, Drunk," for a raw and honest conversation about motherhood, addiction, and recovery. Emily shares her personal story of struggling with alcohol addiction while trying to maintain the facade of a perfect life. She opens up about the immense pressure she felt to "do it all" and the hidden struggles she faced daily. Emily's journey shines a light on the reality of being a wife, mother, and doctor while secretly battling alcoholism and a desire to be the "perfect mom." This conversation explores the emotional toll of her addiction on her family, her relationships, and her own sense of self. Beyond her personal story, Emily and Kristina dive into the broader issues of motherhood struggles, intergenerational trauma, and the challenges of seeking help. They discuss the judgment and isolation many mothers face when they are vulnerable about their struggles, and how breaking the silence is a crucial first step towards healing. This episode is a must-watch for anyone who wants to better understand the complexities of addiction recovery, the myth of the "perfect mom," and the power of finding your voice. Emily's story is a testament to the strength it takes to admit you have a problem, ask for help, and rebuild your life. She shares valuable advice for anyone struggling with substance abuse, emphasizing the importance of trusting your gut and finding one person to confide in. This discussion is not just about alcoholism; it's about the universal themes of shame, vulnerability, and the courage to change your story. He shares practical advice for parents, explaining the key developmental milestones and signs that indicate a child is prepared for formal instruction. The discussion highlights the importance of sustained interest in a particular instrument and warns against the pitfalls of trying to force a child into an instrument they don't love. The video also tackles the critical topic of practice and motivation. Michael and Kristina offer strategies to avoid the dreaded "nagging" cycle and instead foster a positive and engaging approach to music. They explore the different learning styles children have and the need for adaptable teachers. Michael also provides a refreshing perspective on burnout and quitting, suggesting that it's not a failure but sometimes a signal to change a teaching method, try a new instrument, or simply take a break. He shares his own story of leaving and returning to music, demonstrating that a flexible approach can be the key to a lifelong love of music. This week on the I Hate Critics Movie Review Podcast: Sean and Jeff kick things off by gleefully roasting the trailer for the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel—which looks more like a parody than a follow-up. From there, they split on one of the more polarizing new releases before coming together for an emotional deep-dive into one of the year's best films. Materialists Directed by Celine Song Starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, Pedro Pascal A high-end New York City matchmaker finds herself caught between a lucrative life with the “perfect” client and unresolved feelings for her flawed, but compelling, ex. One of our hosts appreciated the charm, the other… not so much. The Life of Chuck Directed by Mike Flanagan Starring Tom Hiddleston, Karen Gillan, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mark Hamill, Mia Sara, and Carl Lumbly Flanagan dials back the horror to deliver a deeply personal, existential love letter to life and memory. Based on a Stephen King short story, The Life of Chuck is haunting, beautiful, and profoundly moving. Both Sean and Jeff were all in on this one. Classic Review: A Good Marriage We didn't linger too long on this 2014 thriller based on another Stephen King short story. Following the emotional resonance of The Life of Chuck, returning to a run-of-the-mill King adaptation just didn't quite hit.
