What are Open Science Practices and Why do they Matter? Inside JABA 21

Dr. Matt Tincani joins Dr. John Borrero and me for the 21st (can you believe it!?!?) installment of the Inside JABA Series on Behavioral Observations. From a research perspective, this Inside JABA episode is by far our most wonkiest one to date. By that I mean we take a deep dive into the area of Open Science Practices. If you're not familiar with the Open Science movement, Matt walks us through the basics. In doing so, we review the lead paper in the fall 2024 issue of JABA that he co-wrote with Drs. Shawn Gilroy and Art Dowdy (see Tincani, Gilroy, and Dowdy, 2024). Of the several Open Science Practices, this paper - and by extension, this episode - focuses on Preregistration. According to Tincani and colleagues, "preregistration entails outlining a research protocol and specifying the study methods and plans for analysis, which are then archived publicly in a repository before conducting the study" (see p. 4). The point of doing this, amongst others, is to increase transparency and reduce criticisms of questionable research practices in Behavior-Analytic research, such as the file drawer effect, dropping participants from analyses, and so on. While these aims sound laudable, when reading this paper, my inner skeptic began formulating a handful of objections to preregistration, such as increasing barriers to conducting research by adding additional steps, "boxing in" the work of researchers to the point if inflexibility, and so on. Both in the paper and on this podcast, Matt walks through these common objections, so if you too are skeptical, give this episode a listen and see if Matt's treatment of these resonate with you. Here are a few resources mentioned in the episode: Tincani, Gilroy, and Dowdy (2024). Extensions of open science for applied behavior analysis: Preregistration for single-case experimental designs. Tincani and Travers (2019). Replication Research, Publication Bias, and Applied Behavior Analysis. Subscribe to JABA here. Open Science Collaboration (2015). Estimating the reproducibility of psychological science. Retraction Watch. Rick Kubina, Session 39. Kubina et al. (2017). A Critical Review of Line Graphs in Behavior Analytic Journals.

Episode NotesEpisode SummaryIntroduction to Open Science – Asier Moneva introduces open science, emphasizing transparency and replicability as essential to modern research.Importance of Transparency – He explains how transparency builds trust, enabling other researchers to assess rigor and replicate findings accurately.Preregistration and Registered Reports – Asier discusses these practices, which require researchers to specify methodologies and hypotheses before data collection to reduce bias.Challenges in Adoption – He notes that implementing open science practices can be challenging due to academic pressures and resource limitations. The “Publish or Perish” Culture – We highlight how the pressure to publish quickly can conflict with the time-intensive requirements of open science.Academic Incentives and Misaligned Goals – We critique the academic reward system that often favors quantity over quality, which can detract from scientific rigor.Advantages for Public Accessibility – Open science also enhances public accessibility, making research available beyond academia and helping inform public policy.Ethical Considerations in Research – Asier emphasizes that open science fosters ethical research practices by reducing questionable practices like p-hacking and selective reporting.Benefits of Open Science for Collaboration – The approach encourages collaboration across disciplines and institutions, providing a more comprehensive understanding of complex issues.Real-World Example of Retraction – He mentions a case where a research paper was retracted due to lack of transparency, illustrating the importance of open science practices.Role of Preprints in Open Science – Asier advocates for preprints as a way to share research and receive feedback before formal publication.Challenges with Platform Fragmentation – He observes that the proliferation of research-sharing platforms can hinder accessibility if findings are scattered across multiple sources.Future of Registered Reports – Asier sees registered reports as a future standard, as they align research design with ethical and rigorous science.Open Science as a Solution to Publication Bias – Open science practices help address publication bias by promoting the dissemination of all research findings, regardless of outcomes.Closing Thoughts on Transparency – Open science is about ensuring reproducibility and holding science accountable, aiming to make research as transparent and accessible as possible.About Our Guest:Asier Monevahttps://asiermoneva.comhttps://nscr.nl/en/medewerker/asier-moneva/https://www.thuas.com/research/research-groups/team-cybercrime-cybersecurityhttps://github.com/amonevahttps://osf.io/7ce24/Resources and References Mentioned in This Episode:The Open Science Framework (OSF)The OSF is an open-source platform supporting transparent and reproducible research across disciplines. The Open Science Framework:https://osf.io/Paper Introducing Registered ReportsThis foundational paper outlines the concept of registered reports, a publishing model aimed at reducing bias and enhancing research rigor.Paper introducing "registered reports":https://psycnet.apa.org/fulltext/2014-20922-001.htmlRetraction Case StudyA recent retraction of a notable article on the replicability of social-behavioral research findings offers insights into challenges within open science practices.RETRACTED ARTICLE: High replicability of newly discovered social-behavioural findings is achievable:https://www.nature.com/articles/s41562-023-01749-9Retraction Note: High replicability of newly discovered social-behavioural findings is achievable:https://www.nature.com/articles/s41562-024-01997-3Podcast episode discussing the retraction in depth:https://open.spotify.com/episode/3rygrbUNocfCEEGd1Byn0V?si=vJDuzQT3S7yJqDEUMycF1w&t=178Other:This episode was recorded in a hotel lobby corner with music playing in the background. If the audio sounds a little unusual at times it is because of the noise removal being used to remove that noise being combined with other ‘sound enhancement' features. I had to go back in and play around with the audio directly before I was even a little happy.  The tools work well but they are a little unpredictable.  I am increasingly wary of ‘it just works' audio editing tools. I would have left it in, but the bots chasing copyright infringement are ravenous and indiscriminate.

Comment, question, or idea for the podcast? Send us a Text Message! Welcome to the MNCC recording of the Minnesota Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) training session on completing the social equity verification process. This is the crucial first step for potential social equity applicants aiming to participate in Minnesota's new cannabis industry, launching this summer. This training was held from 4-6 p.m. on Friday, June 21, at the Sabathani Community Center Auditorium in Minneapolis. Preregistration was strongly encouraged, and attendees signed up using a designated registration form. This workshop underscores the state's dedication to fostering a fair and inclusive cannabis industry. Recent updates to Minnesota's cannabis law have introduced a licensing preapproval and vetted lottery process for qualified social equity applicants. For those unable to attend the event, this recording will provide a detailed, step-by-step guide through the verification process. Charlene Briner, OCM interim director, has emphasized that additional information and technical assistance resources are forthcoming.“The Office of Cannabis Management is committed to providing ongoing information and assistance as we prepare to open the application and licensing process,” said Briner. “We encourage potential applicants to check our website frequently as we continue to add guides and materials to support applicants every step of the way.”As part of this summer's launch, applicants must complete the verification process to ensure they qualify for social equity status. This process runs from June 24 to July 10.Verified social equity applicants will then be eligible to submit an application for license preapproval from July 24 to August 12, as mandated by law. These applications will undergo a review and vetting process, and qualified candidates will enter a lottery planned for this fall.Applicants will complete both the verification and preapproval processes through the OCM website. For more information and to review social equity eligibility requirements, please visit the OCM website.Support the Show.

S4E11: Revisiting Preregistration and Registered Reports

In this episode, Jess and Sara reckon with what the preregistration revolution means in developmental science. We first visited preregistration and registered reports in Season 3. Since then, we've been a part of many preregistrations and registered reports, and have reviewed and handled them as editors. Through that process, we've noticed that questions often come up about whether something is really a preregistration and whether some studies or analyses can or should be preregistered.  We mention:  Several definitions: Open Science Framework:  “Preregistration is the practice of documenting your research plan at the beginning of your study and storing that plan in a read-only public repository”. APA: “Preregistration allows researchers to specify and share the details of their research in a public registry before conducting the study.” IES - no definition, just that you should do it; it's part of the SEER standards.  REES similarly just says “REES is designed to increase transparency of and access to information about both ongoing and completed efficacy and effectiveness studies.” Even the preregistration revolution article doesn't include a definition. The closest it gets (about ⅓ of the way through the article is “Preregistration of an analysis plan is committing to analytic steps without advance knowledge of the research outcomes.”  Paper about preregistering exploratory analyses: Compares it to a funded sea voyage:  https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7098547/  Connect with the podcast on twitter @within_between, or email us letters about developmental science at withinandbetweenpod@gmail.com. I am intrigued by exfatloss's recent theory that the primary cause of the obesity epidemic is slow, subtle damage from linoleic acid over many years. Specifically, I want to test the broader possibility that the composition of adipose tissues is what's causing the problem. Since we do not have a decade to test his hypothesis naturally, I'll retcon my current eating habits for a modified experiment. I am just now transitioning from a very low calorie diet to a water fast, having lost around fifteen pounds in the last few weeks. I am going to attempt to continue my water fast for the next thirty days, or until I reach a BMI of

Training dogs, and even more importantly, educating humans, has been the priority for KD Mathews for over 25 years.  KD now combines his shared experiences of training both pet and working dogs, with his years of working with humans in both public education and private enterprise training.  The result is a remarkably effective human-centered approach to helping dogs and their owners.   When he's not working with dog owners with his company, Socratic Canine, KD regularly appears on a variety of podcasts and has quite the “colorful” social media presence which can be consumed on both Facebook and his Instagram @kdmathews.  Information about his work with dogs and their owners can be found on his company's website, www.socraticcanine.comSocratic CanineWe are happy to announce Fox and Hound as our title sponsor. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Predictions for shard theory mechanistic interpretability results, published by Alex Turner on March 1, 2023 on The AI Alignment Forum. How do agents work, internally? My (TurnTrout's) shard theory MATS team set out to do mechanistic interpretability on one of the goal misgeneralization agents: the cheese-maze network. We just finished phase 1 of our behavioral and interpretability experiments. Throughout the project, we individually booked predictions -- so as to reduce self-delusion from hindsight bias, to notice where we really could tell ahead of time what was going to happen, and to notice where we really were surprised. So (especially if you're the kind of person who might later want to say "I knew this would happen" ), here's your chance to enjoy the same benefits, before you get spoiled by our upcoming posts. I don't believe that someone who makes a wrong prediction should be seen as “worse” than someone who didn't bother to predict at all, and so answering these questions at all will earn you an increment of my respect. :) Preregistration is virtuous! Also: Try not to update on this work being shared at all. When reading a paper, it doesn't feel surprising that the author's methods work, because researchers are less likely to share null results. So: I commit (across positive/negative outcomes) to sharing these results, whether or not they were impressive or confirmed my initial hunches. I encourage you to answer from your own models, while noting any side information / results of ours which you already know about. Facts about training The network is deeply convolutional (15 layers!) and was trained via PPO. The sparse reward signal (+10) was triggered when the agent reached the cheese, spawned randomly in the 5x5 top-right squares. The agent can always reach the cheese (and the mazes are simply connected – no “islands” in the middle which aren't contiguous with the walls). Mazes had varying effective sizes, ranging from 3x3 to 25x25. In e.g. the 3x3 case, there would be 22/2 = 11 tiles of wall on each side of the maze. The agent always starts in the bottom-left corner of the available maze. The agent was trained off of pixels until it reached reward-convergence, reliably getting to the cheese in training. The architecture looks like this: For more background on training and architecture and task set, see the original paper. Questions I encourage you to copy the following questions into a comment, which you then fill out, and then post (before you read everyone else's). You can copy these into a private Google doc if you want, but I strongly encourage you to post your predictions in a public comment. [Begin copying to a comment] Behavioral 1. Describe how the trained policy might generalize from the 5x5 top-right cheese region, to cheese spawned throughout the maze? IE what will the policy do when cheese is spawned elsewhere? 2. Given a fixed trained policy, what attributes of the level layout (e.g. size of the maze, proximity of mouse to left wall) will strongly influence P(agent goes to the cheese)? Write down a few guesses for how the trained algorithm works (e.g. “follows the right-hand rule”). Is there anything else you want to note about how you think this model will generalize? Interpretability Give a credence for the following questions / subquestions. Definition. A decision square is a tile on the path from bottom-left to top-right where the agent must choose between going towards the cheese and going to the top-right. Not all mazes have decision squares. Model editing Without proportionally reducing top-right corner attainment by more than 25% in decision-square-containing mazes (e.g. 50% .5.75 = 37.5%), we can patch activations so that the agent has an X% proportional reduction in cheese acquisition, for X= 50: ( %) 70: ( %) 90: ( %) 99: ( %) ~Hal...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Preregistration: Air Conditioner Test, published by johnswentworth on April 21, 2022 on LessWrong. Warning: None of the participants in the Great Air Conditioner Debate Of 2022 have endorsed my summaries of their positions in this post. Including me. Background In Everything I Need To Know About Takeoff Speeds I Learned From Air Conditioner Ratings On Amazon, I complained about the top-rated new air conditioner on Amazon. I claimed that it's a straightforward example of a product with a major problem, but a major problem which most people will not notice, and which therefore never gets fixed. Specifically: although it does cool the room, the air conditioner also pulls hot air from outside into the house. People do notice the cool air blowing from the air conditioner, but don't think to blame the air conditioner for hot air drawn into the house elsewhere. Simply adding a second hose would fix the problem at relatively low extra cost, and dramatically improve the effectiveness of the air conditioner. But companies don't actually do that because (apparently) people mostly don't notice the problem. To my surprise, multiple commenters disagreed with my interpretation of the air conditioner example. They argue that in fact one-hose air conditioners work fine. Sure, single-hose air conditioners are less-than-ideally efficient compared to two-hose, but it's not a very big difference in practice. CEER efficiency ratings account for the problems, and the efficiency difference is typically only about 20-30%. Also, The Wirecutter tested lots of portable air conditioners and found that there wasn't much difference between one-hose and two-hose designs. (Credit to Paul for both those pieces of evidence.) Really, what this example illustrates is that simple models and clever arguments are not actually very reliable at predicting how things work in practice. One should instead put more trust in experiment and reported experiences, including all those 5-star ratings on Amazon. I, on the other hand, think the “second hose doesn't help much” claim is a load of baloney. I think it is far more probable that CEER ratings are bullshit and The Wirecutter messed up their test, than that a second hose makes only a small difference. And so began The Great Air Conditioner Debate Of 2022. . Why Do Air Conditioners Need Hoses? Ideally, an air conditioner should work much like a fridge: it pumps heat from air inside to air outside. Inside and outside air do not touch or mix; only heat flows from one to the other. A portable air conditioner sits inside the house. So, in order to pump heat to the outside air (without letting it mix with inside air) it needs two hoses. One hose runs from a window to the air conditioner, and sucks in outside air. The other runs from the air conditioner back to the window, and blows the outside air back out. Inside air comes in and out through vents in the air conditioner, and the unit pumps heat from the inside air to the outside air, keeping the two separate throughout the process. A single-hose air conditioner doesn't do that. A single hose air conditioner sucks in indoor air, splits it into two streams, and pumps heat from one stream to the other. The hotter stream blows out the window (via the one hose); the cooler stream blows back into the room. The problem with a single-hose design is that it blows air from inside to outside; it removes air from the room. That lowers the pressure in the room slightly, so new air is pulled back in via whatever openings the house has. That air comes from outside, so presumably it's warm - and it's replacing formerly-cool indoor air. (Technical term for this problem: “infiltration”.) Oversimplified Summary Of The Debate I'm not even going to try to do justice here, just give what I currently think are the key points, in roughly ch...

If passed by the Senate, HR1 - the For the People Act of 2021 - would represent one of the most significant advancements of voting rights since 18-year-olds became legally allowed to vote (by constitutional amendment, might we add) or the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was signed into law.
