Fencing is a fundamental part of ranching, but not all fences are created equal. In this episode of the Ranch Stewards Podcast, host Haylie Shipp dives into the benefits of wildlife-friendly fencing—also known as modified farm fencing—with RSA Conservation Coordinator Martin Townsend, Phillips County rancher Mark French, and Brett Dorak from Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks. From a rancher's perspective, these fences aren't just about wildlife—they make sense for the operation, too. A higher bottom wire allows Pronghorn and other wildlife to pass underneath, maintaining critical migration corridors. At the same time, this design helps protect fences from snow rot, extending their lifespan and reducing maintenance. Across the region, aging fences are being replaced, and ranchers are working alongside wildlife professionals to ensure that new fencing works for both livestock and migrating species. The conversation also explores how Pronghorn are monitored and collared to track their movements, providing valuable data on migration patterns. Plus, the group discusses available resources to help with fencing projects, making it easier for ranchers to implement these practical, long-lasting solutions. For details on this method of fencing, check out this infographic: https://tinyurl.com/2va5y8ka To listen to the virtual fencing podcast discussed within the show, check out our episode from Nov 21, 2024, titled "An Unfiltered Rancher Response to Virtual Fencing."Tune in to hear how collaboration between ranchers and conservationists is creating a win-win for working lands and wildlife! The Ranchers Stewardship Alliance (RSA) is a rancher-led, grassroots organization, dedicated to improving the quality of life for rural communities throughout the Northern Great Plains. Today's guest is Mark French, a nomadic photographer, adventurer, and content creator who is on an epic road trip through the lower 48 states. Mark spends a week to 10 days in each state in order to meet the people, capture the essence of the trip in photographs, and experience the culture. Mark has not seen any of the division that seems to be pervasive in our American political scene, and was even in Pennsylvania - a swing state - during the election, and never once saw any kind of divisiveness, which led him to believe what the media is showing is not what is happening in most of the country. Mark believes that "Life will live you in the absence of you living life!" I consider myself extremely lucky that I didn't ignore those topics, activities, and ideas that dominated a significant amount of my time throughout life. While I don't think I have any special talents, I've been passionately curious about the intersections of those things…and that has allowed me to create this wonderful professional life today. That being said, I'm naturally drawn to people that have similar approaches to life. So, it shouldn't be of any surprise to you why Mark French and I have become friends. Currently, Mark is the CEO of the clean sports nutrition brand Don't Quit, but his entire past is a masterclass on how living at the intersections of your passions can create massively successful results. In our conversation, we cover everything from how his intrapreneur spirit at one of the largest media companies in the world led him into his first CPG venture to those lessons being applied with the recent merger of X2 Performance and Don't Quit Sports Nutrition. Additionally, we expand on how that business combination happened and why its synergies should be powerful within the beverage industry. Moreover, we explore the aspirational brand storytelling approach of Don't Quit and where the powder supplement format might fit into his future strategic gameplan. But those are just some of the interesting topics we talked about in this episode... Special thanks to Cognizin for supporting this awesome piece of content. As a result of Mark's work ethic, leadership, selflessness, and commitment to being invaluable without being most valuable...Mark earned a second scholarship from Buzz Williams as he proved himself to be indispensable. Prior to walking on at Texas A&M Mark enjoyed a highly successful high school basketball career in which he finished his prep career at Prestonwood Christian Academy in Plano, TX, and helped the school capture the 2016 State Championship and earned 2016 TAPPS all-state honors and all-district selection. Mark spent his first three years of high school at Briarcrest High School in Eads, TN, earning back-to-back TSSAA all-region team honors. Mark surpassed 1,200 points, 440 assists, and 120 steals. What you'll learn about in this episode: What it took for Mark physically, mentally, and emotionally as a walk-on to earn a scholarship from two different head coaches at Texas A&M Mark's four keys to being invaluable without being most valuable How Mark was able to find a way as a walk-on for a second time with a new coach, new culture, and a team full of newcomers to make himself indispensable What it means to ‘see the unseen' What qualities in a leader resonate with Mark and how he tries to emulate them Why it is just as important, if not more important, for Mark to be a coach off the floor to his teammates as it is to be a coach on the floor Mark shares the value of playing for two different coaches at Texas A&M who are both givers Additional resources: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-c-french-jr-649508162/ Twitter: @M1French Instagram: @m1french Texas A&M Basketball Roster

Last July, Mark French joined me on Strokecast to share his stroke story and talk about his new film, A Teachable Moment. It tells the stories of four Washington, DC, area stroke survivors as they navigate the new world of stroke recovery. Mark was one of the featured survivors, as was Anne Daily who I spoke with in Episode 14 about making the shift key her bitch. It also features doctors and fantastic animations that explain stroke in a simple and understandable way. The film is an hour long and available on Amazon Prime Video. You can learn more at http://ATeachableMoment.Film. Mark had his severe hemorrhagic and ischemic strokes in May of 2015 caused by AFib (or Atrial Fibrillation) and went on to make an amazing recovery. Four years to the day, in May of 2019, he suffered another stroke (or series of strokes). Sadly, this time he didn't make it. My heart goes out to the French family, the team at LAI Video (here's their tribute to Mark), and all the folks who made A Teachable Moment possible. Lessons I don't know all the details; from outward appearances, Mark was doing everything right. Sometimes, that's not enough. Even among folks here are doing everything right, there are still strokes. Roughly 20% of strokes have no known cause. Roughly 20% are also fatal. Stroke is not a vaccine; getting one doesn't guarantee you won't have another. For those of us who survive, and those around the survivor, stroke e a powerful wake up call. Our time on this Earth is limited. And we don't know when our time is up. What are you going to do with your remaining days? This episode is largely a clip show. I went back to my conversation with Mark from last summer and pulled out some key things he said that I feel get to the heart of his story, his message, and his legacy of driving Stroke awareness. A Teachable Moment Trailer BE FAST Hack of the week With use of only one hand, getting ice cubes out of an ice cube tray can be difficult. My new strategy is to grab the end of the tray with my usable hand and smack the bottom on the counter. It may take 2 or 3 tries, but this usually pops the ice cubes free. Then I can lift them out with my fingers. A few weeks ago, I stopped by a Microsoft store to talk with the folks about the Xbox Adaptive Controller. It's an accessory that makes it possible for folks with disabilities to play the same video games as everyone else. Most people first encountered it during the Superbowl ad Microsoft ran. [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YISTzpLXCY[/embed] I shared some thoughts about it in a Facebook live video, and Occupational Therapist and US Army Veteran Erik Johnson reached out to me about some of the work he's been doing with this device. [embed]https://www.facebook.com/StrokeCast/videos/470339296837043/[/embed] In this episode, Erik Johnson joins us to talk about the adaptive controller, the OT field, his story, and how gaming is changing the future of OT. Bio Erik Johnson enlisted in the Army in 1996. As a young Private, while stationed in Germany, he was involved in a car accident where he sustained second and third degree burns to over 20% of his body, most of which were on his arms and hands. He decided to become an Occupational Therapist because of the influence from the OT that treated his burns. After his time in the Army, Major Johnson has taken on several projects that directly impact veterans with a focus on successful re-entry to civilian life after discharge from the military. He is currently volunteers as the Chief Medical Officer for Operation Supply Drop, an organization that serves Veterans by building strong communities through gaming and team building. His work on the therapeutic benefits of video games have been widely recognized in both the Medical and Video Game communities. Erik also is one of the founders for IDEGO, a company that is developing treatment opportunities while using Virtual Reality with a focus on behavioral health disorders. The company uses Deferred Individualized Gradated Immersion Therapy (D.I.G.I.T) to achieve success. Most recently, Erik teamed up with another non-profit organization where he has been recently named their Chief Medical Officer. Working with Warfighter Engaged, their mission is to improve the lives of severely injured and disabled warfighters with custom adapted video game controllers, recreational items and other solutions to provide greater independence. For more details, visit: http://www.erikunleashed.com/https/drivegooglecom/openid11p8q1q-6qtxw53txknfutqsl7fm9pzo Mirror Therapy We talked a little about Mirror Therapy in the episode. Here is something I wrote about it a few weeks after leaving the hospital in 2017. I really need to get back to it again. This is my mirror box. It was $60 on Amazon which is way over priced. There can't be more than $5 in materials in it. It would be easy to make. Of course if I could make it I wouldn't need it. The issues I have using my arm and leg are literally all in my head. That's where the damage exists. The brain can be pretty dumb at times and easy to trick. That's how the mirror box works. I put my left hand in the box behind the mirror and put my right hand in front of the mirror. Then I look at the mirror and my brain thinks the reflection of my right arm is actually my left. When I move my fingers or wrist on the right, while I try to move them on the left, the brain thinks I'm actually moving them on the left. And then I get some actual, new movement. The brain learns to move my left hand because it thinks it's already moving my left hand. Classic fake it till you make it stuff. While the price is annoying, if I get my fingers back faster, I can't really complain. A Teachable Moment Last year I interviewed Anne Dailey and Mark French about their stroke documentary, A Teachable Moment. The big news is that A Teachable Moment is now available for streaming in your own home via AMAZON Prime. If you are a Prime customer, check it out and share with your friends and family. Congratulations to Anne, Mark, and the entire A Teachable Moment family for this big step. Hack of the Week When you arrange things in your kitchen, or remodel you kitchen, make sure everything is at an appropriate height for you. That will depend on how tall you are, how stable you are while standing, whether or not you are in a wheel chair, etc. Make sure controls are on the front of the stove to minimize reaching. And don't forget the cabinets. Remember, reaching down can sometimes be as difficult as reaching up. So make sure any new design reflects your actual capabilities. Produced in Washington, DC, A Teachable Moment focuses on four local survivors that represent the greater story of stroke in the United States. LAI Video also speaks with loved ones and medical experts to clearly describe the disease, its debilitating impact and the tangible steps anyone can take to reduce the risk of a stroke. The documentary uses contemporary animation to better illustrate the science behind stroke, available treatments and preventable risk factors. I first heard about “A Teachable Moment” through an article on StrokeSmart.org. This is a film about four DC-are stroke survivors and their experiences as the go through this life changing event. The film premiered in Washington, DC, on May 17, and is available to groups interested in hosting a private screening. If this seems familiar, it's because I talked about this movie back in Episode 014 with Anne Dailey, one of the featured survivors. This week, I speak with Mark French. Mark is not only one of the other featured survivors. His organization produced the film. Here is the trailer: Our discussion included Mark's story, why he made the film, the importance of sharing stories and an introduction to AFib. Presented in collaboration with the Association for Middle Level Education. Jokes You Can Use: Why was the broom late for work? Did you hear that Oxygen and Magnesium are going out? Did you hear about the two antennas that got married? What is ET short for? Eileen Award: Scoopit: Twitter: Facebook: Google+: iTunes: eMail: Advisory: From rotary to Siri: How the phone numbering system came and went The recent death of John E Karlin of Bell Labs, the father of the push-button phone and other innovations, has sparked a lot of reminiscing about land line phones. According to the New York Times, Karlin was also "the most hated man in America" for killing the named exchanges (like Butterfield 8). However the story of how our phone numbers got to be the way they are is a much longer and more interesting one. In 1950 it got really interesting, with the introduction of area codes. The designers wanted to minimize the number of numbers people had to dial, so all the area codes were set up to have 1 or 0 as the second number. The switches were set up so that if first number dialed was a 0 then it went to operator. If the second digit was 1 or 0, then it was an area code. If the second number was another number, then it knew it was a local rather than long distance number. That's how it was going to distinguish between 7 and 10 digit numbers. http://www.treehugger.com/gadgets/number-crisis-world-zone-1.html Bazooka shoots ping-pong balls at Mach speed The magic of physics can turn the mundane into something marvelous. Mark French, a mechanical engineering professor at Purdue University, designed a supersonic air-powered ping-pong ball cannon that shoots the lightweight object at speeds so fast I would consider the device a lethal weapon of science. A ping-pong ball reportedly blasts out of the special cannon at speeds equivalent to Mach 1.23 -- nearly as fast as an F-16 fighter jet. http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-57569069-1/bazooka-shoots-ping-pong-balls-at-mach-speed/ Ocean Facts: In celebration of the upcoming premiere of DinoFish on Nat Geo Wild (Sunday, April 1, 10pm EST/PST), I’m excited to present the first of what we we hope will be a long series of comic strips by Dr. Byron Beekle.
