There's something wonderful about driving a vehicle that's the opposite of all the things you love. And for Jason, that's the Ford F-150 Raptor R. = This episode of the Carmudgeon show is sponsored by Lucid Motors, who has special lease and finance offers on available 2023 models of the Lucid Air Touring and Grand Touring. Visit lucidmotors.com for offer details. = Jason, lover of simple, lightweight, nimble sports cars, is enamored of the Raptor R — even more so than the Bronco Raptor. Why? Because it's unabashedly what a Raptor should be. And everything that Jason ostensibly hates in cars: It's heavy, it's inefficient, it's loud, it's an automatic, it has forced induction, it doesn't go around corners or stop, and it's huge. But it's also perfect. Jason's highway encounter with a Rolls-Royce Cullinan made for some of the biggest laughter he's ever experienced in a car, and this leads the boys to discuss cars they love that are out of sync with what they typically appreciate. The 2023 Ford F-150 Raptor R is the coolest truck in the Ford stable. This week AOTR Co-Host Chris Teague got the chance to match it up against the toughest tests Maine has to offer, including heavy-duty off-road driving and, toughest of all, a round trip to the home improvement store to get patio bricks and 50-pound bags of mulch. How did the truck do in those difficult circumstances? We'll tell you in this episode. While Chris Teague was hauling bricks, Host Jack Nerad was hauling ass in the 2023 Genesis Electrified GV70 luxury crossover SUV. An appealing vehicle with some serious performance chops, the battery-electric GV70 won his praise for its 429 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. With 54 more horsepower and 125 lb-ft more torque than the gasoline-powered GV70, the electric SUV was hard not to like. That brings us to our special guest this week, an expert on battery-electric SUVs. Jonathan Chen is a senior product expert at VinFast, a Vietnam-based automaker that is just entering the U.S. market. We recently got a chance to drive the VinFast VF8 battery-electric crossover SUV, and we'll discuss that and VinFast plans for its American launch. In the news, it is game-on in the midsize truck segment with an all-new 2024 Toyota Tacoma getting ready to do battle with an all-new 2024 Ford Ranger, all-new 2024 Chevrolet Colorado, and all-new 2024 GMC Canyon. The confluence of all these new trucks is rarer than sobriety at a frat party. We'll tell you how they stack up. A new consumer survey shows that many American car buyers want electric vehicles. But there is one big hangup that prevents many of them from buying one. We'll tell you what that is and more on the survey in this episode. BMW might make a production vehicle out of a recent concept car that caused a lot of buzz. We'll give you details on that. And Stellantis is recalling a lot of vehicles because of a fire risk. More on that too. The most powerful Ford F-150 pickup truck ever built has just gone on sale poised to go head-to-head with the current hottest truck on the planet — the Ram 1500 TRX. So how does the newest member of the Ford F-150 Raptor lineup compare to the vehicle that claims to be the apex predator of all trucks? The duel between these two incredibly capable trucks promises to be one of the most intense in history. Who will win bragging rights? And how will they keep them? This episode was so popular that we are repeating it now over Labor Day weekend. We'll have some answers for you about the two killer trucks in this edition of “America on the Road.” And we'll have an all-new episode for you next week when we take a first look at the all-new 2023 Lexus RX luxury crossover. In the road test segment, Co-host Chris Teague will draw on his inner billionaire as he puts the Mercedes-Benz S 580 sedan through its paces. Many reviewers think the Mercedes-Benz S-Class is the best sedan in the world. Others opine that the new electric cars like the Lucid Air, Porsche Taycan, and Mercedes-Benz EQS make the S-Class feel old-fashioned. Are they right? We'll find out what Chris Teague and Host Jack Nerad think about M-B's traditional take on the full-size luxury sedan in this installment. Across the United States, Jack Nerad road tested a vehicle that puts an EV within reach of millions of car buyers. The battery-electric Chevrolet Bolt EV has been heavily revised for the model year and Nerad will offer his reaction. One big piece of news revolving around the car is a giant price drop. The question is, does the lower price make the Bolt EV a great value? And how does it compare to the closely related Chevrolet Bolt EUV small crossover? Nerad and Teague will deliver their thoughts on that and much more. Buying a new car continues to be a struggle as we roll toward Labor Day. Our special guest might be able to help. Host Jack Nerad will sit down for a lengthy interview with Mike Darrow, CEO and President of TrueCar. His company is in the process of launching a new initiative that is designed to make car buying much easier, and we'll have details. So stick around for that. In the news, an iconic car model has just celebrated its fiftieth birthday. The Honda Civic was introduced five decades ago and it is now in its eleventh generation. Michigan's AutoTalk Episode 68: "Ford's Raptor R, Pinewood Derby Cars, and a Big Daddy Don Garlits Tale"In this episode, executive producer Phil Tower and co-hosts Al Schwinkendorf and Joh Puhek bring you three important auto-related news and history storiesFirst off, we have news from Ford Trucks...the announcement that the 2023 model year brings the all-new F-150® Raptor R™, Ford's most potent F-150 Raptor ever, with a 5.2-liter supercharged V8 that cranks out 700 horsepower and 640 lb.-ft. of torque...a truck Ford says is built for extreme off-roading adventuresNext up, we reminisce about the legendary Boy Scouts originated Pinewood derby races that will be 70 years old in 2023. Interestingly enough, the first pinewood derby was held on May 15, 1953, in Manhattan Beach, California by Cub Scout Pack 280C. The pinewood derby concept was created by the Pack's Cubmaster, Don Murphy. Since Mr. Murphy's son was too young to participate in the popular Soap Box Derby races, he came up with the idea of racing miniature wood cars. The rest as we know is full of pinewood derby race stories told for decades! Finally, Al has news of a historically significant event in the life of now 90-year-old drag Racing legend, Big Daddy Don Garlits. Garlits is known across the world as the Godfather of drag racing. Garlits perfected the rear-engine Top Fuel dragster, an innovation motivated by the loss of part of his foot in a dragster accident...a much safer design since it put most of the fuel processing and rotating parts of the dragster behind the driver. Garlits was also the first drag racer to officially surpass the 170, 180, 200, 240, 250, and 270 mile-per-hour marks in the quarter mile; he was also the first to top 200 mph in the 1⁄8 mi. To put it simply, he was a man built for speed.Online:https://garlits.com/Ford Raptor R:https://media.ford.com/content/fordmedia/fna/us/en/news/2022/07/18/700-horsepower-new-ford-f-150-raptor-r.htmlOfficial Boy Scouts Pinewood Derby car Kit:https://www.scoutshop.org/official-pinewood-derby-car-kit-17006.htmlLike us on Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/MichigansAutoTalkPodcastMichigan's AutoTalk podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, iHeartRadio, Google Podcasts, Amazon Audio, Spreaker.com, Deezer, and Podcatcher.Oh, and if you'd like our podcast, please leave a review!

Ford has just put the most powerful F-150 pickup truck ever built on sale, and it is poised to do battle with the current hottest truck on the planet — the Ram 1500 TRX. So how does the newest member of the Ford F-150 Raptor lineup compare to the vehicle that claims to be the apex predator of all trucks? The duel between these two incredibly capable trucks promises to be one of the most intense in history. Who will win bragging rights? And how will they keep them? We'll have some answers for you in this edition of “America on the Road.” In the road test segment, Co-host Chris Teague will draw on his inner billionaire as he puts the Mercedes-Benz S 580 sedan through its paces. Many reviewers think the Mercedes-Benz S-Class is the best sedan in the world. And we'll find out what Teague thinks from his home base in Maine. Across the United States, Host Jack Nerad road tested a vehicle with a California sensibility. The battery-electric Chevrolet Bolt EV has been heavily revised and Nerad will offer his reaction. One big piece of news revolving around the car is a giant price drop. The question is, does the lower price make the Bolt EV a great value? And how does it compare to the closely related Chevrolet Bolt EUV small crossover? Nerad and Teague will deliver their thoughts on that and much more. For those seeking to buy a new car, our interview guest this week has some good news. Our special guest is Mike Darrow, CEO and President of TrueCar. His company is in the process of launching a new initiative that is designed to make car buying much easier, and we'll have details. So stick around for that. In the news this week, an iconic car model is just about to celebrate its fiftieth birthday. The Honda Civic was introduced five decades ago and it is now in its eleventh generation. More than 12.3 million Civics have been sold in the U.S. since its debut here in 1973. 2021 Ford F-150 Raptor Finally Revealed first blush, the 2021 Ford F-150 Raptor takes the same approach as the standard F-150. For better or worse, it doesn't look all that different or more exciting than the truck that came before, regardless of whether you're studying its physique or taking in the cabin. But more than even the bread-and-butter truck Ford based it on, the third-generation Raptor hides major innovations. The Blue Oval isn't sharing power figures just yet, but with the 700-plus-horsepower Ram TRX, last year's numbers for the Raptor – 450 hp and 510 pound-feet – might feel a bit weak if they indeed reappear for the 2021 model year. As for a more powerful rival to Ram, it sounds like one is coming next year with the Raptor R, which according to Ford will mark the return of V8 power to the high-performance truck line. Which V8 remains a mystery, but the GT500's supercharged 5.2-liter V8 seems like a good match for the Hellcat-powered Ram. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
