In this solo episode, I share what I wish I knew before having a baby, from never being able to have the “perfect” timeline for having kids; to how friendships and relationships might evolve once you become a parent. I talk about the intensity of having your priorities completely shift to another person and away from yourself, why it's so important to find what makes you feel like “you,” and why giving yourself a window of transition time during your days, especially during postpartum, can be a lifesaver. I also discuss the unpredictability of what works one day with your child versus what might not work the next day, the confidence that comes from being a parent, how important choosing your village is — from your partner, to your friendships — aand more.Key Takeaway / Points:On never having the perfect timelineOn your priorities shifting away from yourselfOn finding what makes you feel like yourselfGiving yourself a window of time to transition into different parts of your dayOn the energy it takes to feed another personThe unpredictability of what works one day vs. what doesn't the nextOn the joy of watching your child experience the worldOn the confidence that comes from being a parentOn the judgment you experience as a momOn how important your village is, including your partnerHow your friendships might shiftListen to Ep 207: “What I Wish I Knew in my Twenties” hereThis episode may contain paid endorsements and advertisements for products and services. EPISODE 66–Coming Out When You're a MomOn this podcast, we often have conversations addressing parenting issues with experts, and we talk about parenting with parents. Today's episode explores an example of a mom realizing she was queer as an adult parent with grown children, and the impacts that had on her family. In this episode of In the Den, Jen visits with Jamie Michaels, her daughter Laurel Armstrong, and Jamie's partner Celeste Carolin about navigating a coming out later in life as a parent. Special Guest: Jamie MichaelsGrowing up in a Christian household, Jamie Michaels embraced her faith and raised her family within Evangelical Christian teachings. However, in 2015, Jamie came out as gay to her husband and her three adult children, a revelation that challenged her family's beliefs and reshaped many of her relationships. Through her honesty and vulnerability, Jamie navigated the complexities of reconciling her sexuality with her religious roots, while navigating the complexities of a blended family. Her story serves as a powerful reminder of the strength found in embracing one's true self at any stage in life.Special Guest: Lauryl ArmstrongLauryl, the eldest child of Jamie Michaels, grew up in an Evangelical Christian household, deeply rooted in faith and tradition. In her early twenties, she embraced her role as a youth leader intern, passionate about guiding and inspiring younger members of her community. Lauryl continued to uphold her family's values, raising her own family within Christianity. However, her world was turned upside down in 2015 when her mother came out as gay, introducing her partner into the family in 2016. This shift challenged Lauryl's beliefs and sparked a journey of self-discovery and acceptance, ultimately reshaping her perspective on love, family, and faith.Special Guest: Celeste CarolinCeleste, Jamie Michaels's partner, came from an LDS upbringing, coming out in 2005. Entering Jamie's predominantly Christian family introduced her to new complexities and unexpected joys, navigating the intricate dynamics of family ties, including adult stepchildren, grandchildren, and proximal family. Blending traditions, managing expectations, and navigating family rules became a delicate dance in their shared journey, where curiosity and adaptability undoubtedly played pivotal roles in fostering harmony and understanding within their blended family unit.Links from the Show:Join Mama Dragons here: www.mamadragons.orgIn the Den is made possible by generous donors like you.

Understanding The Assignment: Special Guest Pastor Andrew Momon by Valley Christian Church
On the twentieth episode of the Family Discipleship Podcast the hosts (Adam Griffin and Chelsea Griffin) talk about a new book, The Intentional Father, with author Jon Tyson. Questions we asked Jon in this episode: In your book on fatherhood you share a lot about the personal anecdotes and stories that came from your time with you and your son. You talk about meeting every morning. That is a serious commitment to discipling your son. What did that time look like? What wisdom or pastoring can you give to the man who is raising multiple sons or has sons of very different age or maturity levels? I know the book focuses on the work you did with your son entering into manhood, can you give us a window into what family discipleship looked like for your daughter? It's a beautiful story. Now looking back, is there anything you wish you could've done differently? What role did your wife play in the “primal path”? A lot of the book is idyllic. Things seemed to have worked out great. Were there any rough spots? Any difficult resistance? I've heard you talk about a long conversation you had with your son about a moral dilemma revolving around being hypothetically cornered by a friend's parents, I thought it was a brilliant question, would you be willing to share that with us? It seems like a lot of the work you did in discipling your son was very formalized. You had trips planned. Meetings regularly. Resources you read together. Was there any aspect of your interactions with him that happened more informally? Anything that just came up that you weren't expecting or prepared for that played an important role in your discipleship? Before we let you go, would you mind sharing with us, what are the prayers you have for your kids right now? If our listeners want to pray for the Tysons, what can they ask God for on your behalf? Some of our favorite quotes from Jon Tyson this episode:“I wrote this book as a father out of love for my son. I wrote it as a pastor because I see so many young men with father wounds trying to make sense of their lives and searching for healing and largely I want to speak into the toxic masculinity of our society and present better Christian men for the renewal of the world. I want to address the things that people are not talking about.” - Jon Tyson“Your son is gonna have every morning available for something. If you were sending your son off for two-a-day football no one would blink. They'd just say, “That's good.” Momon kids spend an hour every day in high school studying the Old Testament and New Testament, Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants. They don't blink. Christians are the only ones who perceive the idea of spending time with your children and helping them follow Jesus and get ready for adult life to be weird. People push back and say, “That's so much time!” I'm like, “If your son got up an hour every morning to do his homework you would clap for him.” When you get up to prepare him all of the sudden it's a radical idea.” - Jon Tyson “Parenting is hard and it's getting harder and harder in our world today. The issues are so complex. First hand experience of what kids are going through feels so much more distant.” - Jon Tyson“Do what you can, not what you can't. The most important thing is consistency. But you can do more than you think!” - Jon Tyson “Intentionality is about understanding the kid that God has given you, the kid that is in front of you. A lot of parents do a lot of damage because they just project general wisdom into their kids' lives rather than asking “What do they need at this particular stage?'” - Jon Tyson “I established a relationship by entering into their world.” - Jon Tyson“Most of American family Christianity is failing our children. 70% of kids are walking away from faith when they get to college. If you had anything else with a 70% failure rate, don't you think you'd redesign it?” - Jon Tyson“I know parents want to get this right. I assume the best in parents. I'm not here bringing a word of condemnation. I'm trying to bring a word of inspiration.” - Jon Tyson“Parents, your kids may not be giving you feedback that makes it feel like they love what you're doing, but trust me, they ache for your intentionality and your investment in their life.” - Jon Tyson“If my dad loves me this much, how much more must God love me?” Resources mentioned in this episode:The Intentional Father “Christ calls us to care for those living in poverty—including parents working hard for their children's future. Download your free copy of Created to Flourish: How Employment-Based Solutions Help Eradicate Poverty, to learn how. Sometimes during the fires and trials of our lives, it can be difficult to see through the smoke to what we can learn and become because of the event. For members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who suffered the devastating effects of the California Camp Fire of 2018 and this September’s Almeda Drive Fire in Oregon, their tragedies led them to a greater appreciation of the blessings of the restored gospel of Christ. Blessings that no earthly tempest can remove. Chico California Stake President John Meyer and President John Clason of the Medford Oregon Stake share what their congregations have learned amid the fires of adversity, how faith can be found in the embers of our trials, and how powerful the blessing of comfort can be as we minister one to another. The Church News Podcast is a weekly podcast that invites listeners to make a journey of connection with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints across the globe. Host Sarah Jane Weaver, reporter and editor for The Church News for a quarter-century, shares a unique view of the stories, events, and most important people who form this international faith. With each episode, listeners are asked to embark on a journey to learn from one another and ponder, “What do I know now?” because of the experience. October 15, 2020 Right from the start I’ll admit that this is going to get heavy. Mainly because what we’re attempting to walk through as a people, generation and nation has got to be replenished with a new source of seeds for a future harvest. Oops. Three of you have already dropped off. At least my mom is still here. Mom? On this podcast episode I bring up a term that flowed through me at 5 this morning. The cry of the echo. The definition is simple but you may have to read through it a few times to understand its presence. The cry of the echo. The hearts endless attempt at wanting to navigate its way through the invisible emptiness caused by the presence of neglect and lack of accountability which has inspired a movement to let go and let die. Whoa! Come on dude! Have coffee first before you write! You have to understand that these assumed trying times are nothing more than what our hearts interpret as such. The cry of the echo. We all catch the same news headlines but we aren’t collaborating as a people but rather holding off on opinion due to a human need of being loved, liked and not lost. Verbal communication today acts as if it’s blasting away at this huge unstoppable mountain. Each party defends itself and rightly so. All our open minded growers belong here as we start our exploration of 'Inclusion to Grow' this week with James Momon (Global Inclusion Exec.). We will be coming back to this topic again. And again. Why? It is the right and necessary thing to do in business and life Diversity + Inclusion = bigger results (ethnic diversity most important) We all have work to do here (for ourselves and others) This is a growth opportunity (AKA hands on & imperfect) not an intellectual exercise James joins us from Minneapolis in the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd. He remains optimistic about seizing the opportunity for real change and impact of increased honesty and appetite for uncomfortable conversations. Some key takeaways: Diversity includes the dimensions we do not have choice around such as race, gender and orientation. In the form of representation it is often tracked and is a starting point for business accountability and to measure if the workforce reflects the consumers. Hiring great diverse talent is not enough. Impact, engagement and retention result from intentional action, investment and focus in creating culture. Diversity is being asked to the party, Inclusion is being asked to dance (Dr Heidi Grant). James adds that belonging is dancing like no-one is watching. Belonging is the goal and we start on the path by intentionally building authentic relationships with team members beyond task (yet another reason for quality 1:1 meetings and discussions) Resources: - Article: "Don't Be an Ally, Be an Accomplice" @ Forge by Medium https://forge.medium.com/dont-be-an-ally-be-an-accomplice-437869756ab5 - Dr Heidi Grant PHD: https://www.heidigrantphd.com/ - "Selective attention test" Video (experiment): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJG698U2Mvo Click here to understand how to become YOUR Chief Energy Officer with this free assessment and resources www.chiefenergyofficer.scoreapp.com We hope you enjoyed the episode Visit the Go to Grow Website here: www.gotogrow.com.au Send us an email with any thoughts, questions or ideas to stewart@gotogrow.com.au or melissa@gotogrow.com.au Thanks so much for choosing growth and being part of the tribe. This month, Ben speaks with Tiffany Momon, visiting assistant professor at Sewanee University in Tennessee, and founder of the Black Craftspeople Digital Archive, a scholarly resource that explores the contributions that African Americans have made to the material culture of the United States. Tiffany and Ben focus their attention on a chair made by enslaved craftsmen at Leonidas Polk’s Leighton Plantation in Louisiana, and Tiffany offers tips on what institutions and researchers can do to ensure they’re telling the full story of the decorative arts.
Frans van Lent La Biennale de Momon- about the solidity and continuity of the physical world as opposed to the human temporary presence. July - November, 2020. The initiative: La Biennale de Momon project was set up by Frans van Lent, a Dutch artist, based in Dordrecht, the Netherlands. His recent projects include the Unnoticed Art Festival, the ConceptBank and the ParallelShow. There is no clear distinction between his practice as a performance artist and his curatorial projects. He often invites other artists to participate on an equal basis. Frans van Lent studied at MaHKU, Utrecht (MA Fine Arts). He tutors at the Willem de Kooning Academy, Rotterdam (since 2000). The project: Maumont is a small village in the Perigord in France. It consists of 15 houses, around 30 inhabitants and there is no church, shop, café or other public facility. Only a few original residents are still living in the village; many died over the years, others left to live elsewhere. Today most inhabitants are newcomers and pensioners, often from other countries. Twenty years ago you could still smell the farms everywhere. Herds of cows and sheep were led through the village every day. The village has changed, from a place where all was related to soil, growth and the seasons, to a place where the inhabitants mainly stroll, relax and dream. Momon is the old name of the village, no longer in use since the name Maumont was introduced. Momon stands for the village as it exists in the mind. It is no longer physically linked to the location, it is linked to memories and coloured by nostalgia. La Biennale de Momon starts from the village, but it will only be that starting point. Nothing will be changed but, on the contrary, it will remain the way it is. The artists: Eight artists are working in this project: Sarah Boulton (GB), Marc Buchy (FR/BE), Joan Heemskerk (NL), Susana Mendes Silva (PT), Josh Schwebel (CA/DE), Lisa Skuret (US/GB), Elia Torrecilla (ES) and Frans van Lent (NL). They all have a certain preference for creating work without a material body, without physical traces. Their ultimate works might consist of texts, scores, images or sounds, everything that can live online without actually touching the physical ground. During one week in the first half of this year, every artist will individually stay in a small house in the village. She/he will use this time to get familiair with the village, with its surroundings, its inhabitants. And they will of course prepare and create. LaBiennaleDeMomon.org: Finally La Biennale de Momon can only be experienced online. The will be no physical traces left in the village to find. The project will officially be presented at LaBiennaleDeMomon.org on July 15, 2020.You can of course always choose to visit the location, but do not expect to see something different than what it always was: just a small village in the Perigord. And finally: In November 2020 we will organise a public conference in the Dordrechts Museum in Dordrecht, the Netherlands. In this conference all artists will talk about the meaning of this project and about their works. There will also be other speakers with a professional relation to the subject: actors, journalists, scientists. Financing the project: We are very happy that the city of Dordrecht, the Netherlands, funded part of this project. It ensures us of the means to realise many aspects as intended. One of the things that is still missing is a fee for the artists. The project is very much dependent of their efforts and I would really want to value this by offering them a fair fee. To realize that we set up the crowdfunding. The book mentioned in the interview is Underland of Robert Macfarlane. Bull (Limousin) View from the village of Maumont

They begin with Edmond Baudoin's Piero(New York Review Comics). This is a fascinating and moving memoir -- or better yet, a series of remembrances -- from Baudoin and his relationship with his younger brother Pierre, or Piero. While the title and the story itself would lead one to believe that this is the story of Edmond's younger brother, it's actually a narrative that focuses on the author himself. Edmond, or Momon, as he's called in the book, is at the center of this text, and he's explored and defined within the context of his brother and their relationship, especially as it concerns art and illustration. After that, the Two Guys turn to Jacques Ferrandez's adaptation of Albert Camus's The First Man(Pegasus Books). This isn't the first time the guys have discussed Ferrandez's adaptation. In July 2016, Derek and Gene looked at his graphic version of Camus's The Stranger. This book is similarly moving, but in many ways denser and more pensive than the earlier adaptation. The First Manwas the manuscript that Camus was working on at the time of his death, dying in a car accident. The unfinished work, and intended masterpiece, was finally published in the 1990s, but Ferrandez's text doesn't really feel like an uncompleted manuscript. This is quite a prose-heavy book, and philosophical in the way that Camus's essays and fiction were thought-provoking. Derek and Pascal didn't plan this when they chose these two books, but The First Man and Piero have a lot in common: thoughtful, pensive, and narratives scaffolded around memories and the past.
