Yes, it's the "S-word." Shoegaze...of all the media fabricated sub-genres that we talk about on O3L, this is one of the most polarizing. The term was coined with some derision about the crop of artists that came up in the late '80s/early '90s who spent much of their stage time looking down at their effects pedals. Even many of the bands who are most closely associated with the term rebuke the label. On the other hand, the word conjures up a glorious, beloved sound that continues to resonate with musicians and fans to this day: walls of woozy, beautifully sculpted guitar noise, drowned out but ethereal vocals, dreamy, insistent beats, all bathed in swathes of reverb and echo. The Extended Play (EP) was a format that was well suited for this music, so that's our focus on this episode. While we may associate the heyday of shoegaze with the amazing groups that burst onto the UK scene, its influence spread across the pond. Case in point is our Third Lad this week, guitarist Archie Moore, who spent the first part of the '90s simultaneously in THREE seminal Washington, D.C. area bands who took cues from fizzy UK indie - Black Tambourine, Lilys, and Velocity Girl. If that wasn't enough, Archie and his friends also co-founded one of the legendary American indie labels, Slumberland Records. Velocity Girl was the stuff that '90s indie pop dreams are made of: Named after one of the coolest songs, fronted by the impossibly cool Sarah Shannon, recording for one of the coolest labels (Sub Pop), staples of alternative radio and MTV's 120 Minutes with hits like "My Forgotten Favorite" (also prominently featured on the Clueless soundtrack), "Crazy Town," "Sorry Again," and "I Can't Stop Smiling." We caught up with Archie the day after Velocity Girl's first gig in 21 years at the anniversary bash for legendary D.C. club The Black Cat. They also will be playing the Bowery Ballroom in New York on September 30th before returning to The Black Cat on December 1st. Catch them if you can! Sleepyhead recorded their forthcoming sixth album, New Alchemy, at the legendary Boston area recording studio Q Division with esteemed producer and Q Division co-founder Jon Lupfer at the helm. They are releasing the album August 19 as a digital download and via streaming platforms to be followed by a release on 12” vinyl LP.  They plan to play as many shows as they can manage after that! New Alchemy features Sleepyhead founders, drummer/vocalist Rachael McNally and guitarist/vocalist Chris O'Rourke as well as bassist/vocalist/keyboardist Derek van Beever, who joined the trio in 2004, a few years after the other two had moved to Boston. Many of the songs conjure the subtly infectious laissez-faire sounds of pre-Grunge Indie Rock the embrace early on in their career with a handful evoking classic Laurel Canyon Country-Rock and other 70's FM staples. The title track to New Alchemy was inspired by the exploits of the New Alchemy Institute, a utopian endeavor founded by idealistic scientists in the 1970's in Falmouth, Massachusetts, the hometown of Sleepyhead guitarist/vocalist Chris O'Rourke. Sleepyhead was formed in a basement room at NYU's Brittany dorm in the fall of 1989 by drummer/vocalist Rachael McNally, bassist Mike Galinsky and guitarist/vocalist Chris O'Rourke. They released their first 7" single, the Kramer-produced "Play," in 1991 on Picture Book Artifact. Four full-length albums followed, on three different independent record labels. Punk Rock City USA was released by Slumberland Records in 1993, followed by Starduster (Homestead 1994), Communist Love Songs (Homestead 1996), and The Brighter Shore (Sealed Fate 1999). They toured the United States and Europe throughout the nineties, sharing the stage with such legendary bands as Polvo, Half Japanese, Yo La Tengo, The Grifters, The Dambuilders, Nation of Ulysses, Helium, Royal Trux, Antietam, Luna, Versus, The Magnetic Fields, and Dungbeetle. Around the time their fourth album was released in 1999, Rachael and Chris got married, and Mike Galinsky moved on to a successful career in filmmaking. Dan Cuddy (The Special Pillow, ex-Hypnolovewheel) joined Chris and Rachael on bass. With Dan on bass, Sleepyhead did some touring for The Brighter Shore and began writing new songs. Rachael and Chris moved from New York to Boston in 2002 after having their first child. They had another kid in 2005. By this time, they had begun recording a new album, with Dan on bass, with producer Mike Deming (Pernice Brothers, Apples in Stereo, Beachwood Sparks, Lilys), at Deming's famed Studio 45 in Hartford, and subsequently Enfield, CT. In 2004, bassist/vocalist/keyboardist Derek van Beever joined the band, and they started playing shows in Boston, Providence, and New York whenever they got the chance. In April 2013, this new lineup of Sleepyhead went into Q Division Studios in Somerville, MA to record the last three songs for their long-time-coming fifth album, Wild Sometimes, which was released on renowned Chicago indie Carrot Top Records on April 8, 2014. They played a bunch of shows in the Northeast, Midwest and Southeast to celebrate the release of Wild Sometimes in 2014, and then started writing a whole bunch of new songs with Derek. In the Spring of 2018, Drawing Room Records released a well-received deluxe double vinyl LP/digital reissue of Starduster and Communist Love Songs called Future Exhibit Goes Here.         Sleepyhead's info     http://www.sleepyheadrockband.com/Sle

For episode 12, Brian had the opportunity to speak to Christopher Porter, the primary creative force behind indie pop act Veronica Lake and co-founder of Audrey's Diary. Founded in metro Detroit in the early 90s, Audrey's Diary had a very brief run of 6 releases, each holding a place in the pantheon of American independent, space and dream pop. For those of you wondering about the importance of Audrey's Diary on today's music, 2 tracks released by the Audrey's Diary were featured on the epic Southeast of Saturn compilation released on Third Man Records in 2020. As an art project, Audrey's Diary has had an influence on independent music in a far more reaching way than Christopher is willing to admit.Featuring the likes Black Tambourine (Pam Berry, Archie Moore and Brian Nelson of Velocity Girl and Mike Schulman of Slumberland Records), this supergroup of sorts kicked off the label with the classic “Throw Aggi From The Bridge”. Brian and Christopher, now a journalist and writer, step through each of the Audrey's Diary releases exploring them in great detail. The final release was a fanzine, Emily's #777, an ode to the likes of Sarah Records featuring a 7” with music by Bark Psychosis, Jessamine and Buddah on the Moon.If you have never heard any of the Audrey's Diary releases or are just curious about this important independent American indie label, this interview is a treat. For fans of the label, this episode is somewhat of a love letter to those who loved the work of Christopher and Audrey's Diary. A key theme of this interview was best put by Christopher when he said “never stop making music with your friends”.

Smokescreens - "I Love Only You" from the 2020 album A Strange Dream on Slumberland Records. With their melodic, jangle-pop sound, you might mistake Smokescreens for a New Zealand band. But it's no surprise this Los Angeles-based band's music is infused with the classic "Flying Nun" sound, when David Kilgour, of legendary Dunedin band The Clean, is behind the production on their latest full-length A Strange Dream, out October 30th via Slumberland Records. "The Clean are one of my favorite bands of all time and David is definitely someone I greatly admire which makes this album so special to me," the band enthused on Facebook.  Recorded with engineer Kyle Mullarky (Allah-Las, Little Wings), the band come into their own on this third album, combining buoyant guitar lines with dulcet vocals. And with a trippy painting by Kilgour used as the album artwork, this is one record you'd be OK to judge by its cover. Welcome to the show with ex-Peel Session stars The Suncharms. Luckily for us the band has reformed following their split up in the '90s and are currently recording new material. There is an LP in the wings from The Suncharms. The band has been in touch and we are certainly looking forward to their upcoming release. Read on to discover more about the band and what to expect from them in the future. Also in the show we have Richard's father drop in on the studio and he stays for the entire show! Such is Old Man's musical taste that he offers a few nuggets of wisdom on the tracks in today's show. However, it's not all beer and skittles. After playing the Eastern European classic from A Hawk and A Hacksaw, he cites it obvious middle Eastern influences and then rambles on about Kashmir for a bit. Did you listen in Geography lessons all those years ago? And you always said my geography knowledge is appalling! We are always on the lookout for suggestions from you, our listeners. The Suncharms - straight out of Sheffield FTBOTRB's impression of The Suncharms Thanks to Marcus of the band for getting in touch with us here at Record Box HQ. We loved The Suncharms here, their musical innocence and melodies hark back to an era when flares were back in fashion. And people wore elephant leg jeans - remember those? A time when we all had floppy bangs of hair and wore long sleeve tee's printed all over with flowers. We all shopped at Affleck's Palace and spent embarrassing amounts of time in Vinyl Exchange. Janglie indie pop at its best describes The Suncharms brilliantly. It's an authentic sound and one we are hoping they are going to be able to replicate on their upcoming debut album release. As told by Slumberland Records Sheffield's The Suncharms formed in 1989, inspired by the flourishing indiepop scene. Also by the sonic experimentation welling-up around them that would soon come to be known as shoegaze. Following initial garage rehearsals the band soon found themselves supporting indiepop legends such as The Brilliant Corners, St Christopher, The Orchids and The Television Personalities. By 1990 the first Suncharms demo tape had secured support slots with emerging Shoegaze bands such as Cranes, Catherine Wheel and Curve which brought the attention of Wilde Club records and by June 1991 the first EP was released to favorable reviews, reaching a fairly respectable No.23 in the UK indie charts.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZXXSksKG8A&feature=youtu.be In November 1991 the excellent second EP Tranquil Day was released, which led to a Peel session in April 1992. The Slumberland Records crew LOVED those two EPs. They had all the guitar overload we craved, but wrapped around some unusually crafty pop tunes. Less ethereal or abstract than a lot of shoegaze, accurate reference points might include early Ride or The Boo Radleys. We first approached the band about the possibility of releasing something way back in 1992. Sadly the familiar scenario of band members lives going in different directions began to hamper progress so a release never materialised. In April 1993 The Suncharms played the last gig of their initial phase.  Life after the split Over the intervening years The Suncharms name was kept alive by a small group of indie enthusiasts, websites, online radio stations and bloggers. In 2014 Richard met Roque Ruiz of Cloudberry Rec...

On today's episode, I talk to musician Kurt Heasley. A Floridian by birth, Kurt spent his early years in Hopatcong, NJ and in Virginia Beach. In 1988, he recorded a demo tape which he gave to Slumberland Records boss Mike Schulman. Schulman was so impressed with the demo that he released Kurt's first records, which were recorded under the name The Lilys. Between 1992 and 2006, Kurt would go on to record eight albums as The Lilys including A Brief History of Amazing Letdowns, Eccsame the Photon Band, and Everything Wrong Is Imaginary, which span genres from shoegaze to psych-rock to mod revival. Although Kurt stopped making music full time to concentrate on other pursuits, he plays every now and then, including some recent shows in Philly and New York. This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, follow me on Twitter.

Slumberland are one of my favourite labels ever, active since the late 80s and continuing to release really great music from their Oakland HQ. Featuring old and current bands from the Slumberland roster, including The Softies, The Aisler Set (pictured, with Amy Linton seated on the floor), Henry's dress, Frankie Rose, The Ropers, Boyracer, Lilys, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart and Veronica Falls.  I hope you like it!  x esther

This show features several new releases from March 29. More information about the records is below.*Update!* I think I mentioned in this show that All Eternals Deck was the Mountain Goats third LP, which is obviously incorrect (ouch, indie cred!). What I meant to and should have said was that this is the third LP with a more rock-oriented trio. Sorry, ya'll.Beat City Radio #583 PlaylistDownload show (right-click, save target as): Beat City Radio #583Stream: A Few of This Week's New Releases The Mountain Goats released All Eternals Deck, which takes its name from a fictional set of tarot cards. The album shows that John Darnielle's songwriting is still quite solid and the rhythm section gets a boost from Superchunk drummer Jon Wurster.  Stream the album on NPR's website. Favorite tracks: Damn These Vampires, High Hawk Season, The Autopsy Garland, For Charles Bronson, Birth of Serpents.Hosannas is a duo from Portlandia who create sweeping and beautiful experimental dream pop tinged with cosmic spaghetti western sounds and shoegazing tendencies. They are back with a FREE EP, Thug Life Nicole, that follows the release of their third album, Together late last year. Find out more about the band and download the EP from the link above.Bonus mp3s:   Hosannas - Obsolete PeopleHosannas - Walroos From the Moon Duo website: "Moon Duo was formed by Ripley Johnson of Wooden Shjips and Sanae Yamada in San Francisco in 2009. Inspired initially by the legendary duo of John Coltrane and Rashied Ali, Moon Duo counts such variant groups as Silver Apples, Royal Trux, Moolah, Suicide, and Cluster as touchstones. Utilizing primarily guitar, keyboards, and vocals, the Duo plays space against form to create a primeval sound experience." This experimental psychedelic duo dropped Mazes this week on Sacred Bones Records.Bonus mp3s:Moon Duo - MazesMoon Duo - ScarsMoon Duo - When You Cut The Pains of Being Pure at Heart are a shoegazing bliss/gliss rock quartet from Brooklyn, NY. They released their debut self-titled album a couple of years ago to much critical acclaim. That record was very much rooted in the 80s, with elements of post-punk, dream pop, twee, and the C86 sound. It was a very saccharine heart-on-the-sleeve album, but balanced those elements with some darker tones and distortion. The sophomore album, Belong out on Slumberland Records, builds on the first album's elements and takes them further with a BIG and slick wall of sound production style, courtesy of Flood and Alan Moulder (Smashing Pumpkins, My Bloody Valentine, Depeche Mode). The overall sound of this album is early 90s guitar pop-rock, though there are some synth-washed tracks that recall Modern English and The Cure. Belong is a big-sounding, shimmering and slick, heart-breakingly blissful record that glides along beautifully and is enjoyable, though cloying at times. Favorite tracks: Heart in Your Heartbreak, My Terrible Friend,Anne With an E, The Body.Bonus mp3:The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - I Wanna Go All the Way (B-side of the Belong 7" vinyl single). We also played a new one from Swedish indie rockers Peter Bjorn and John's new album, Gimme Some and a couple from Dirty Beaches. We'll feature Dirty Beaches in another post.Enjoy!Bonus Video: The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - Young Adult Friction from The Pains of Being Pure at Heart out on Slumberland Records in 2009.
