Today, we're excited to be joined by one of the most recognizable faces in Indigenous film. Gary Farmer is from the Cayuga Nation and has a long career in movies and TV, and he's a musician, performing with his group Gary Farmer & The Troublemakers. Among his screen credits are Smoke Signals, Dead Man, Powwow Highway and, of course, more recently, he played Uncle Brownie in Reservation Dogs. He's also a storyteller and a force for pushing for authentic Indigenous representation. So he joined us to talk about what's going on in his life, his music, his acting career and how they connect with his gifts and purpose in life.  Gary grew up in theater and has made a 50-year career on the big and small screen, most notabaly in Reservation Dogs. He's still working and taking on roles. Smoke Signals: The Unity of One Heart and One Mind In this episode of Living on Purpose, Carolyn explores how our lives function as signals in a shared world, and what it means to live with one heart and one mind, individually and collectively. Drawing from lived experience, caregiving, loss, recovery, and life at Charlie's Place Healing Sanctuary, she explores how our inner life inevitably shapes the field around us, and how responsibility can be understood as relationship rather than pressure. Carolyn speaks to the exhaustion many feel today, not from effort alone, but from inner division, and offers a compassionate reframing of unity as integrity, coherence, and honest presence, even amid fear, hope, and change. And they discuss Elaine Miles, an Indigenous actor best known for her roles in “Northern Exposure,” “Smoke Signals,” “Wyvern” and “The Last of Us”. While she was walking, 4 men wearing masks and vests with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement labels stepped out of two black SUVs with no front plates and pressed her for her ID. She handed them her tribal ID from the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation in Oregon. The agents called it "FAKE". Federal government agencies recognize tribal ID as a valid form of identification, and Miles has used it to travel back and forth to Canada and Mexico without any issues - until now. The History Channel introduces the new documentary film, Jim Thorpe: Lit by Lightning, which profiles one of the greatest American athletes of all time and the first Native American Olympic gold medalist. From executive producers LeBron James & Maverick Carter, the film follows Jim's life and legacy from growing up on the reservation in Oklahoma to his formative years as a young athlete in Pennsylvania to his victories at the 1912 Summer Olympics – all while facing prejudices against Native Americans who were perceived as threats to Western expansion. Despite the obstacles, Jim followed his Olympic career by playing professional baseball, football and basketball. The film was directed by acclaimed Indigenous filmmaker Chris Eyre, a member of the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes. Chris made history with his directorial debut Smoke Signals, which swept the Sundance Film Festival, and is currently executive producer and director of AMC's Dark Winds, alongside executive producers George R.R.
