Do you feel like it's impossible to get ahead financially because life always seems to cost more than you actually have?   If you're living in survival mode–buy now and worry later, you already know that overspending is a slippery slope that traps you in a cycle of debt and makes you feel guilty about everything you buy.        It's a mistake to assume that living on a budget is restrictive and that convenience and luxury items are incompatible with financial discipline. In reality, spending money to make your life better is the secret to living in abundance.    My guest today is Rachel Coons, financial expert, mom of four and host of the Money Moms podcast. Do you ever feel like you know exactly what you should be doing but you just can't get yourself to do it?   Most of us have learned to get what we want by setting clear and specific goals and then using metrics to judge our success. We focus on changing the numbers–obsessing over how much we weigh, how much we drink or how much money we have in the bank.    But even when we achieve the goal, our motivation to keep making an effort eventually fades. And we feel increasingly disappointed, frustrated and helpless as our progress slips away–like we're doomed for failure.   Dr. Kyra Bobinet, MD, MPH is a behavior change designer who is here to share her ground-breaking research on how the brain responds to the illusion of failure. You'll learn how to apply her Iterative Mindset to work with your brain so that you can access your inner wisdom, and liberate your motivation.   Click here to take Dr. Kyra's Iterative Mindset Quiz.   Click here to TAKE My QUIZ: Do you have a drinking problem or a thinking problem?   What daily updates from me? Have you considered that the inability to self-correct your drinking habits could be a sign of trauma?   Most high achieving professional women associate the word "trauma" with violence, sexual assault or emotional abuse and neglect, and assume they don't qualify because nothing “that bad” has ever happened to them.   Instead, they attribute their bad habits to a lack of discipline or motivation and try to shame themselves into “snapping out of it.”   But you can't snap out of trauma–and shaming yourself causes more trauma. You must work with your nervous system to restore a sense of safety in your body– going slow and being patient with yourself. Because the root cause of alcohol use disorder is shame. Which means the solution is learning how to feel confident in your resilience.   In this episode, you'll learn: What trauma is (and what it isn't) How to recognize the symptoms of trauma in your own life The difference between a stress response and trauma response A simple technique to stimulate your vagus nerve and reset your nervous system to a parasympathetic state so that you can re-engage with your life feeling powerful and in control.   Come find me on TikTok @hangoverwhisperer and IG @thehangoverwhisperer     If you're ready to get emotionally sober (side effects include an 80 percent reduction in drinking,  click here to BOOK A DISCOVERY CALL WITH COLLEEN. Welcome to the podcast! If you're listening in from the US, UK, Australia, Ireland, Germany & China - I'm so glad you're here! You're a part of a community that is listening from 69 countries. How cool is that?! I mention the different countries because I'm very aware that a lot of people don't have access to large recovery communities in their local towns. But we're living in a digital age, where people in recovery can connect, and stay sober through online groups. Today, my guest Paul will share his story of alcoholism, why he decided to stop drinking, and the online group he joined that has helped him to stay sober for over 15 years.  Before we jump in, I have the biggest announcement I've ever made… which is that my book is FINALLY available for pre-order on Amazon! It's called “The 12 Step Guide for Skeptics: Clearing Up Common Misconceptions of a Path to Sobriety”. And if you've ever had a bad experience with 12 step, or feel turned off by AA, I just ask that you try to keep an open mind for a moment, because the first thing I want to tell you is that your feelings are valid! I'm not going to pretend that there aren't some aspects of the program that are problematic, but what I want to tell you, is that there is a way around those sticking points that will allow you to access this magical process. The book will call out some of the most common issues I hear, and give you context and perspectives that might clear up any misconceptions. It's really a set of logical mindset shifts, while still honoring the feelings that naturally arise when grappling with behavior changes like alcohol use disorder. Listen, for the last 8 years and hundreds of podcasts later, you know my only goal is to help you end needless suffering. If this book can help you feel better, I hope you read it and apply it! But if you just can't get yourself to do that, I hope you feel comfortable enough to reach out to me and set up a call to talk about sober coaching. There are many paths to the same destination and I'm here to help. As always, you can book a free strategy call with me, just visit: makesobreitystick.com   So without further delay, please enjoy this episode with Paul. Subscribe So You Don't Miss New Episodes! Megan also shares her excitement to be entering midlife knowing that she can now create a beautiful second act!   Megan also shared her very real struggle with speaking in public and how she used to use alcohol to overcome this phobia. Megan is honest about the level of anxiety she used to feel, and how the alcohol she thought was helping her get through it was actually creating more anxiety. When Amber Graziano stopped drinking she didn't know anyone who didn't drink. But, she did know she liked to run and that other runners might be non-drinkers, or other non-drinkers might want to try running. So she decided to start a sober running group. On the podcast, Amber shares that the first 5 people who joined her Facebook group included her mom and best friend but gradually, through word of mouth, the group began to grow and today there are over 2000 members. A powerful part of our after-alcohol journey is channeling our energy into new areas that help us grow - physically, emotionally, spiritually and mentally. Amber believes that running and the Recovery Road Runners group helps with all of that, while also offering a recovery community.  Amber shares the gifts she has found by running in recovery, including: more confidence, letting go of excuses, and the mantra “one mile at a time”. Many people go through a stage in their alcohol-free journey where the idea of drinking surfaces. This can show up as romanticizing alcohol, or flirting with the idea of moderation. In today's episode, I address the possibility of PAWS (Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome) and FAB (Fading Affect Bias). One or both of these symptoms can show up after a few months without drinking and they can catch us by surprise. About our guest Curt Eichelberger:Curt is a father, husband, brother, graphic artist, music lover and green thumb. He made the difficult decision to share his story, which has been an important part of his recovery. By finally being honest with himself and others, he has learned to love himself and is committed to helping others do the same. His story is below.“As a teen, I was a bit of an outcast. I was shy and quiet. Then I discovered two things that would change my life forever: skateboarding & punk rock. Skateboarding became my true love and punk provided the soundtrack. Our scene was not shy about drinking and using drugs. It was a huge part of the lifestyle, and my friends and I were all hooked. As time went on, that same group of friends started getting smaller and smaller due to overdoses, drunk driving accidents & suicides. But the party didn't stop. Eventually, I married and had two kids. The partying slowed down a little, but a painful divorce sent me right back down the path of destruction.Years later, I found happiness and married again. We enjoyed drinking together socially, but after my wife lost her only brother in a drunk driving accident, she became less interested in drinking. I didn't understand why that meant I had to slow down, so I kept drinking without her. Eventually, I was only drinking vodka alone at home. Until I couldn't stop and was physically dependent on that next drink. I constantly needed eye drops because my eyes were so bloodshot, I was bloated, I was hiding bottles around the house. I lied to myself and my wife for years. In 2009, I got a felony DUI & went to jail. But I didn't stop drinking. My doctor told me I had a fatty liver. I still didn't stop. I knew I was slowly killing myself and I didn't care. I would fight with my wife, disappear for days and go on drinking binges. My wife had finally enough & gave me a choice: rehab or relocate. I was angry and scared but I knew that I needed to change unless I wanted to lose everything, including my life.My wife drove me five hours to the treatment center where I would spend the next 30 days. I came very close to dying in rehab. My blood pressure was off the charts and I was at high risk of seizure. The staff even notified my wife that she may need to plan to drive back if my health didn't improve. Thankfully I was able to successfully complete treatment. I am grateful for my second chance and for the opportunity to help others. Getting sober was the best gift I could have given myself. My family has been so supportive and tell me I have transformed into the best version of myself. Now I'm thankful that my liver numbers are normalized. I am feeling good and I'm proud to be back on my skateboard. As my friends sasw the change in me, slowly some of them began confiding in me that they might want to quit drinking but didn't know how to stop. It was then that I realized there were others just like me and I knew I wanted to help them by creating a support group. This is what led me to start Skate Straight – an awesome group of like-minded people that come together in a safe & sober space to talk, share, skate and support each other. And we always remind each other that we are all important and worthy of good health and true happiness!”For more information on Amy click here.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Live Your Best Recovered LifeRecoveredLife.us is revolutionizing how people find recovery resources. The Hello Someday Podcast
Ep.29: How is Coaching different than AA with Dennis Berry

The Hello Someday Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 5, 2020 58:28

What is the difference between Life, Recovery and Sober Coaching and a 12 step program like Alcoholics Anonymous?   I get this question a lot and I think many women who are thinking about stopping drinking aren't sure what options are available to them for support or how they differ.    Most people who are trying to stop drinking have preconceived notions about what goes on in 12 step recovery programs such as AA based on what they've seen on TV and in movies and are also confused about what exactly “life coaching” or “sober coaching” involves.    Some people wonder if a life and recovery coach is just a private paid AA Sponsor (spoiler alert - it's not!)   Going through a 12 step program, like Alcoholics Anonymous, typically involves attending meetings where members follow the 12 steps laid in the Big Book of Alcoholic Anonymous as a process that recovering alcoholics work through to successfully achieve and maintain sobriety. Many of these steps are ideally taken with the help of a sponsor, an individual who has gone through the AA program and helps others who are new to AA as they navigate early sobriety.   Unlike AA, most life and sobriety coaches use a flexible approach to identify your personal goals around not drinking and succeeding in other areas of your life and create a plan to achieve them based on individual needs, motivations and preferences.    I think that hiring a coach to stop drinking is similar to the decision you might make to hire a personal trainer or a nutritionist to increase your fitness levels or refine your eating habits.    You have a goal you want to achieve (to change your relationship with food, drinking or exercise). You've tried to make changes to your habits and behaviors on your own but have not been successful. At some point you may decide that it's easier and helpful to bring in extra support, a new approach and external accountability to help you stay on track and achieve your goal.   Recovery coaches, like personal trainers and nutritionists in their areas of specialty, provide support and resources, expertise in changing habits and harnessing motivation, accountability to follow through on goals, new ways of approaching challenges and creative approaches to situations that you haven't considered previously.    A coach is there to help you identify where they have gotten stuck in the past, what inner or outer blocks have been holding you back and how to remove them.    A coach will help you create a motivating plan to achieve your goal of living without alcohol, address limiting beliefs about what your life will look like without drinking, provide accountability in reaching your goals and provide guidance and structure in changing ingrained habits and changing your cue-craving-reward-response cycle.    I've invited my guest, Dennis Berry, to have this conversation with me because he's not only a skilled life coach who is passionate about the benefits of coaching, but he is also in recovery and found recovery in AA and for many years was an active participant in the program. He both sees all the benefits of 12 Step programs and the difference between AA and coaching.    Dennis and I had a long conversation about the benefits and synergies of both approaches as well as talking about where the program of AA stops and the work of coaching begins.    We chat about the concept of independence in sobriety and the work you get to do after you stop drinking, in looking forward to what you want in your life now that you've removed alcohol.    In this episode, we discuss: How life, sobriety and recovery coaching differs from the approach used in 12 Step Recovery Programs such as Alcoholic Anonymous. Why most people need layers of support to stop drinking which may include a combination of coaching, therapy, exercise, 12 step programs, podcasts, books, online support groups and other hobbies, habits and healthy pursuits.  How coaching differs from the work done by sponsors in AA or therapy in being goal and future-focused.  The benefits of the Alcoholics Anonymous as a program which is widely available (with an estimated membership of 2 million people around the world), free of cost and offers fellowship, support and a structured program of steps to take to stop drinking.  The limitations of AA as a program created 85 years ago, in 1935, by two white men. In 1939, the Fellowship published its basic textbook, Alcoholics Anonymous and in 1953 AA's 12 steps (the guidelines by which to get sober and recover) and 12 traditions (the principles behind the steps meant to keep members focused on the primary purpose) were written. Criticisms of AA have been that it can be seen as a one-size-fits-all approach that is rigid and antiquated. The importance of developing independence in sobriety and why Dennis believes AA's philosophy and approach can foster dependence on the program.   About Dennis Berry Dennis is a Life Coach based in Colorado, who has been working with people recovering from addiction worldwide for over 15 years. Dennis has been in recovery from drug abuse for 17 years. His recovery has helped him find his mission in life, which is to help others on their journey through sobriety and achieve inner peace and success in every area of their lives. Dennis is also the host of The Funky Brain Podcast. The 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous We admitted we were powerless over alcohol, that our lives had become unmanageable. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others. Continued to take personal inventory, and when we were wrong, promptly admitted it. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs. The 12 Traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous Our common welfare should come first; personal recovery depends upon A.A. unity. For our group purpose there is but one ultimate authority, a loving God as He may express Himself in our group conscience. Our leaders are but trusted servants; they do not govern. The only requirement for A.A. membership is a desire to stop drinking. Each group should be autonomous except in matters affecting other groups or A.A. as a whole. Each group has but one primary purpose, to carry its message to the alcoholic who still suffers. An A.A. group ought never endorse, finance, or lend the A.A. name to any related facility or outside enterprise, lest problems of money, property, and prestige divert us from our primary purpose. Every A.A. group ought to be fully self-supporting, declining outside contributions. Alcoholics Anonymous should remain forever non-professional, but our service centers may employ special workers. A.A., as such, ought never be organized; but we may create service boards or committees directly responsible to those they serve. Alcoholics Anonymous has no opinion on outside issues; hence the A.A. the name ought never be drawn into public controversy. Our public relations policy is based on attraction rather than promotion; we need to always maintain personal anonymity at the level of press, radio, and films. Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all our traditions, ever reminding us to place principles before personalities.   Shownotes: www.hellosomedaycoaching.com/29 Grab your  Free Sober Girls Guide To Quitting Drinking Get the guide on How to find and join my Favorite Private Sober Facebook groups Connect with Dennis Berry Website www.dennisberry.com Listen to The Funky Brain Podcast   Connect with Casey McGuire Davidson Website: www.hellosomedaycoaching.com Instagram: Casey @ Hello Someday Coaching (@caseymdavidson) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HelloSomeday  Listen to more podcast episodes to drink less + live more.
