Send us a textThe journey from outward success to inner collapse—and the path back to authentic living—takes center stage in this compelling conversation with Nick Jonsson, international bestselling author and executive coach.Nick's story begins with transformation through adversity when a motorcycle accident in his twenties forced him from construction work to academia, eventually propelling him up the corporate ladder in Southeast Asia. Yet reaching the executive summit—complete with five-story house, drivers, and staff—marked not fulfillment but the beginning of his fall. "That was when I was the most ungrateful and sort of unhappy ever in my life," Nick reveals with striking candor. What followed was a three-year spiral into alcoholism, isolation, and despair as Nick traded his gym membership for a bar stool and healthy habits for fast food. His powerful description of addiction as "slow, gradual suicide" highlights how corporate culture often enables destructive behaviors while simultaneously isolating those suffering. As Nick explains, executives—particularly expatriates—face unique challenges navigating cultural differences while maintaining authentic connections. The conversation takes a powerful turn when Nick shares how vulnerability became his salvation. Opening up to his now-second wife began his recovery journey, while losing a friend to suicide in 2019 inspired his book "Executive Loneliness." Today, seven years sober, Nick leads support groups for men and senior executives, creating safe spaces where vulnerability becomes strength rather than weakness. Most compelling is Nick's transformation from success-driven executive to authentic human being. Now pursuing therapy credentials to specialize in addiction recovery, he shares how sports replaced alcohol as his connection medium—allowing this self-described introvert to build genuine relationships through side-by-side activities rather than face-to-face confrontation.Whether you're navigating leadership challenges, questioning conventional success metrics, or supporting someone through addiction, this episode offers profound insights into the power of authentic connection and the courage to show up as your true self.To reach Nick, go to his website: http://www.nickjonsson.com You can also find all his links at http://podfol.io/profile/nick-jonssonHis book "Executive Loneliness" can be purchased at http://www.nickjonsson.com/executive-loneliness-book Freed.ai: We'll Do Your SOAP Notes!Freed AI converts conversations into SOAP note.Use code Steve50 for $50 off the 1st month!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Nick Jonsson, founder of Limitless Executive Solutions, shares his powerful story of climbing to the top—only to find himself deeply isolated. In this candid convo with Amy, Nick unpacks the realities of executive loneliness, the turning point that saved his life, and how he's now helping others find connection and resilience. A must-listen for every leader navigating success behind the scenes.
Our guest this week is Master Coach and TED speaker Nick Johnsson In this episode:- Nick spent 11 years climbing the corporate ladder, However when he did reach the senior roles he was striving for he felt unfulfilled and full of self doubt Nick resigned from his job which led to divorce so he turned to alcohol for relief Alcohol became his coping tool for stress and unexpressed emotions. After 2 or 3 years of heavy drinking he reached rock bottom and found his health was collapsing At age 40, he realized he needed help—he began to share his feelings with his new wife, got medical help, and joined a 12-step program. He has been sober for nearly 7 years since that first meeting. These days Nick is an executive and sobriety coach, studying psychology to become a therapist. Runs men's groups and peer support networks He also works with corporates across Asia to address vulnerability, burnout, and connection. We agreed on the "power of vulnerability"— which is central to our philosophy here at Tribe Sober Being open and honest and sharing our feelings is so critical for healing and growth and it seems to happen naturally in our community as we have a common struggle that binds us However I was intrigued as to how he could get hard nosed business men and women to be vulnerable Nick explained that he uses keynotes and workshops in corporates to create safe spaces for open conversation. He shares his own story and then encourages the most senior executives to lead by example, sharing personal stories to build trust and openness. Executive Burnout & the importance of Resilience Nick warns about three signs of burnout: denial, changed habits, and secrecy. Defines resilience as seeking help and using support systems, not just “pushing through.” Nick has written a Book called: Executive Loneliness Based on a survey showing 30% of executives feel isolated. 75% wouldn't ask for help; 84% wouldn't talk about their mental health at work. Follow-up book in progress with case studies and a holistic leadership model. Connect via LinkedIn or find his book Executive Loneliness on Amazon/Audible. There's an epidemic of executive loneliness is the corporate world today. On this episode of the podcast, I'm joined by Nick Jonsson, author of Executive Loneliness, where he shares his personal experiences of striving for success whilst struggling with the negative consequences of a winning mindset. He shares how self-doubt, anxiety and a colluding organisational culture that simply wanted to him to smile and be successful led him to turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms, including addiction, and eventually to him leaving the corporate world in a personal crisis. Whilst at his own rock bottom, a friend of Nick's took his own life. It was then that he realised how important it is that we support leaders who may be experiencing loneliness and depression in the workplace. This provided a catalyst for a new life purpose and the drive to turn his life around and help others. You can find out more about Nick at his website: https://www.nickjonsson.com/

Nick Jonsson grew up in Sweden where drinking beer was kind of a way of life. His drinking escalated when he moved to Australia for college and then got out of control when he started working in advertising and PR in Southeast Asia where the ex-pat community thrived in a lively and inexpensive bar scene. His life was turned upside down after a couple job losses and he soon found himself drinking just to make it through the day. Eventually, he was hospitalized and managed through phamaceutical intervention and twelve steps to get sober. When a friend and colleague lost his life to suicide, a message Nick posted on line went viral, and he now divides his time between his work running an executive peer support group and his work as a writer and speaker. He has a new book out, Executive Loneliness, that is available everyhwere.

Engaging in activities that bring joy and connection can contribute to overall well-being and combat feelings of loneliness.Seek help when needed: If feelings of hopelessness, burnout, or depression become overwhelming, it's crucial to seek help and support. There are numerous resources available, including support groups, hotlines, therapy, and counseling, to assist individuals in navigating difficult times and fostering personal growth.Top 3 Takeaways for the Audience:Treat vulnerability like a muscle and actively practice it in your safe spaces. Share your challenges and experiences with trusted individuals to foster connection and growth.Take the initiative to find both professional and personal safe spaces where you can freely discuss work-related and personal matters with like-minded individuals. This can include peer groups, mentors, coaches, or support networks.Use journaling as a tool for reflection and problem-solving. “It's lonely at the top” - this is a comment many business leaders in organisations admit where trusted relationships, can often prove sparse. In sport, for coaches and athletes this can also be the case the higher you go up the success ladder. These statements inform episode #197 where the author of the book Executive Loneliness, and Co-Founder and Managing Director of the Executives' Global Network, Singapore, Nick Jonsson tells me about his experiences as well as sharing what he found when he researched this topic for his book. We end up discussing the power of talking about the challenges that you face, the benefits of peer support and how difficult it can be to share your vulnerabilities. In addition self-care and how you can learn to look after yourself better so that your mental and physical health, and in turn your performance levels do not deteriorate are talking points. Key Learning Points: Many executives suffer from smiling depression where they put up a beautiful facade of what life really is like. Behind the scenes, it's not the real truth and they're not being their authentic self. This then becomes very tiring and painful. Some executives often don't want to bother their boss, HR team or even their partner at home as it is very difficult for them to have these types of conversations discussing emotional issues they may be facing. Individual and peer support can be very powerful for executives. The commitment shown by executives, if they are not self-aware, can be harmful to their physical and emotional health, where burnout can become a big factor and unhelpful habits often then creep into our lives. On a scale of 1-10 how important is self-care to you? In this very important episode about executive loneliness, Sal Silvester interviews Nick Jonsson. Nick is a CEO, entrepreneur, and author of the book "Executive Loneliness." With over 25 years of experience leading successful businesses, Nick is no stranger to the unique pressures and expectations placed on executives. Through personal anecdotes, research, and interviews with other executives, Nick delves into the often-overlooked issue of executive loneliness and disconnection. In today's episode, we'll explore the topic of executive loneliness and talk about actionable steps for executives looking to overcome feelings of isolation and how to build more meaningful connections in their personal and professional lives.
Nick Jonsson is the founder of the Executive Global Network (EGN) in South East Asia and author of 'Executive Loneliness.' Three CEO's during conversations for this podcast have used the phrase 'It's time to take the mask off', the issue of extreme vulnerability is very real. Nick began his career in advertising and has always had challenging and demanding jobs. His own personal struggles led him to start the Executive Global Network as a confidential peer group for executives and business owners across South East Asia. Nick's motivation for starting (EGN) was based on struggles he had during a 'burn out' period as an executive. He was anxious, stressed and became addicted to alcohol between 2015-2018 he was losing his physical health. He describes the 'smiling depression' as a period of time when he pretended everything was ok to the outside world but internally everything was falling apart and he was spiralling. During Nick's research for his book he discovered that about 10% of senior executives are living as functional alcoholics. Nick uncovered that 33% of executives in SE Asia were suffering from loneliness and isolation. During the pandemic the numbers doubled! Nick himself, hit rockbottom in 2018 and wrote his last will and testament as he could not see how he could recover. He met a woman who later became his wife who was the catalyst for him seeking help as she was responsible for helping Nick break the cycle of shame and hiding and him slowly realising that he was not alone. The strategy to combat Executive Loneliness is based on vulnerability and sharing on a deeply human level. Dr Verran Rose (episide. ) describes vulnerability brilliantly. Society has always handed trophies and glorified winners and many of us have grown up with a selfish dedication to our own success and believing that when the going gets tough the tough gets going. Today, successful companies are making every effort to support their people with mental health initiatives with a culture of openness and understanding. The perception of success is very different to the reality of success which is why we have seen so many high profile individuals struggle publicly. The sheer size of SE Asia has also contributed to the challenges for many executives working in the area. It's time to humanise our leadership. Nick also outlines his 5 Step plan to mitigate executive loneliness during this episode. https://www.linkedin.com/in/nick-jonsson/Buy the book: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Executive-Loneliness-Overcoming-Isolation-Depression-ebook/dp/B091B1Y3WZWatch & Subscribe:
Tim Creswick is the founder and CEO of Vorboss, a telecommunications company which he set up 17 years ago and now employs over 400 people. He is also the newly appointed Chair of the Board of Directors at the Institute of Telecommunications Professionals. This is a courageous, vulnerable and inspiring episode of success, challenge , divorce, therapy, mental health and never stopping in the pursuit of personal growth. All leaders must understand that success comes at a price and self awareness and self care are non-negotiable. Tim completed his high school education but decided to drop out of Oxford University before completing his degree in order to pursue his entrepreneurial spirit. Tim describes himself as an outsider, and only felt a sense of home when in his 30's. He appreciates the contrasting experience he has of anonymity in his commute and everyday life and the weight of responsibility and accountability of being the CEO to over 400 people. Tim truly believes that good leadership means not being invincible. He tells me about his experience of going through a divorce when Vorboss was only about 15 people and the process could have seen the closure of the business. He felt he could not talk about this at work as he didn't want to worry anyone. This is now in stark contrast to running a thriving business that has received over £250-300 million in investment. Tim has made a deliberate decision as an introvert to be authentic, open and deeply human as a leader in order to experience personal growth. He has a tattoo 'Never Stop' when at end of 2019 he was at very low point and his mental health declined significantly following his prolonged divorce proceedings. Tim got to the point that his depression was leaving him feeling hollow and numb. Just getting out of bed and functioning would be an effort each day. This difficult period was also one of the most empowering times for Tim in the business as people knew something was wrong but they also saw an incredible drive to push the business even harder. For Tim, overcoming the challenge of getting out of bed in the morning left him feeling invincible for the rest of the day. Being a leader is a deeply personal journey but you have a choice of the experience (shadow) that you provide to those you lead and interact with each and every day. They say 'it's lonely at the top', so check out next week's episode focused on 'Executive Loneliness' with Nick Jonsson. Watch & Subscribe:

Who loves being lonely at the top? We so often hear about this tradeoff to professional success, yet what does that loneliness look like, for real? Can we be married, have a social life and hobbies, and still feel miserable? And is that actually inevitable? My today's guest is Nick Jonsson, the co-founder and Managing Director of Executives' Global Network (EGN) Singapore, Malaysia & Indonesia. Nick has been there, at the top, miserable and dependent on alcohol and meds to get through his days. He managed to turn things around and is committed to helping others do the same. In this episode, you will hear about: why honesty and vulnerability are inevitable parts of the healing journey how can asking for help look like preventing sports from becoming a new damaging addiction, substituting alcohol the moments of gratitude Stay safe and #standwithukraine, Anna Resources: Connect with Nick: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nick-jonsson/ Learn more about him: http://www.nickjonsson.com/ Sign-up for the Sustainable Leadership Newsletter: https://mailchi.mp/205a08ca614c/sustainableleadershipnewsletter Book a Mindshifting Intensive: https://annaliebel.as.me/strategycall Support Ukraine: https://u24.gov.ua/
Nick wanted to know if he was the only one suffering from the feelings of isolation so he sent out a survey to other senior executives to find out how lonely they were in their roles. His first finding in 2019 was before the pandemic and showed that 30% of the senior executives he surveyed actually admitted they were suffering from loneliness in the workplace. He went back to the same group in 2020 during the pandemic and the figure had gone up to 59%. The next question he asked then was whether this was something they would talk to HR or their boss to. The answer was that 84% wouldn't. The type of role they were in meant they were the people who needed to be seen as being the strongest and stereotypically not able to ask for help. Some people have external executive coaches but many people find it hard to trust internal bosses or HR so who did they turn to? When asked do you seek professional help 75% said no they were coping by themselves. Nick feels that one of the few good things that came out of the pandemic was that psychologists and therapists could be seen online so people could start to reach out without being seen in a waiting room somewhere. Anonymity is there now so there has been some progress but people are still reluctant to talk about it and seem to deny it because the stigma is still there. In this podcast:How leaders can find themselves in the isolation trapWhy leaders find it difficult to ask for helpHow negative feelings can build up and take a mental and physical toll

Nick and I discuss his book Executive Loneliness*******Executive depression, anxiety, and isolation – and the substance abuse, family breakdowns, poor physical health, self-harm, and suicide that can all too frequently result – were a major issue long before most of us had even heard the word “coronavirus”.I know this for a fact because three years ago, I myself went through a severe breakdown. At the time, I was performing very well in my career and had recently been placed in Singapore by my company.Over the previous decade, however, I'd been unexpectedly laid off from senior roles working in Indonesia and Vietnam.I couldn't shake the paranoia that no matter how good my performance was, I could be retrenched at any moment. I lived on edge – and drinking took the edge off. When I first moved to Singapore, I was all alone in a foreign country, so I sought solace in alcohol and the superficial social circle of my local bar. I stopped exercising and gained 20kg within a few months of arriving in this country. It wasn't the wonderful food here that did it – no, it was the booze. Drinking heavily at the end of most days was, to my mind, a reward and a form of therapy, but in fact it only left me feeling more imbalanced, lonely and disconnected.Psychosomatic disorders and my unhealthy lifestyle began to affect me physically.I felt I couldn't get any more down and even made a will in preparation for my death, which I thought could come at any time, despite being only 43 years of age.I'd hit an all-time low. Finally, I acknowledged that I had to do something.I had to speak to someone. I actually consider myself lucky for having a drinking problem, because that meant I found my way to Alcoholics Anonymous.AA has been an invaluable source of support, helping give me the strength to remain sober these past two-and-a-half years.Getting back into exercise and participating in triathlons, I gradually regained my physical fitness, which in turn led to me achieving better mental balance. But I think the thing that helped me most was “paying it forward” and devoting time to service – giving back. For me, that meant contributing a portion of my time to an organization called SOS, Samaritans of Singapore.SOS provides emotional support to people in crisis, individuals who might be depressed and thinking about suicide, or who have been affected by the suicide of someone close to them. The suicide of a close friend when I was in the early stages of my recovery came as a real shock. No one knew he was feeling such despair. He suffered in silence, as so many high-powered executives do (especially men).He hadn't told anyone about his depression or dark thoughts – and that was a terrible wake-up call for me.His book, Executive Loneliness,Website********If you would like to contact the show about being a guest please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCX0ETs2wpOHbCuhUNr0XFTw?view_as=subscriberVideo of the interview is available here: https://youtu.be/P7LnFxk6GKoSound Design and production by Rich Zei at Third Ear Audio ©2022 Better To...Podcast with D. Why did I want to talk with Nick Jonsson on the Knockin' Doorz Down podcast? Nick is a top-level executive, one would say an overachiever. Like many Nick had some issues with his parents, mainly his father. After making the bold move to leave his home country of Sweden Nick began to feel isolated. Now Nick has become an advocate in battling addiction, depression, and anxiety, he is on a mission to help not only executives who are suffering from the same issues he has but anyone that is willing to raise their hand and ask for help. Nick's book Executive Loneliness: The 5 Pathways To Overcoming Isolation, Stress, Anxiety, and Depression in the Modern Bussiness World caught my attention. Nick knows executive depression, anxiety, and isolation – and the substance abuse, family breakdowns, poor physical health, self-harm, and suicide that can all too frequently result – and these major issues have been around long before most of us had even heard the word “coronavirus”. Nick knows this for a fact because three years ago, he went through a severe breakdown. At the time, he was performing very well in his career and had recently been placed in Singapore by his company. Over the previous decade, however, he had been unexpectedly laid off from senior roles working in Indonesia and Vietnam. He couldn't shake the paranoia that no matter how good his performance was, he could be retrenched at any moment. Nick lived on the edge – and drinking took the edge off. When Nick first moved to Singapore, he was all alone in a foreign country, so he sought solace in alcohol and the superficial social circle of his local bar. He stopped exercising and gained 20kg within a few months of arriving in the country. It wasn't the incredible food that did it – no, it was the booze. Drinking heavily at the end of most days was, to his mind, a reward and a form of therapy, but it only left him feeling more imbalanced, lonely, and disconnected. Psychosomatic disorders and an unhealthy lifestyle began to affect Nick physically. Then the suicide of a close friend, when Nick was in the early stages of my recovery, came as a real shock. No one knew his friend was feeling such despair. He suffered in silence, as so many high-powered executives do (especially men). Nick's friend hadn't told anyone about his depression or dark thoughts – and that was a terrible wake-up call for Nick. It spurred Nick to speak out about the dangers of depression and anxiety publically, to go on the radio and do keynote talks, to write articles about these issues, and hopefully, save lives. Nick was encouraged by his friend's brother, who told him, “Scream it out loud!” The hope was to prevent such a tragedy from happening again. This led Nick to write his book Executive Loneliness. In the book, Nick details each of these five steps: Taking Stock, Asking for Help, Getting Healthy, Nurturing Healthy Relationships, and Finding Your Purpose In the chapters dedicated to each of the steps, Nick takes you through his own recovery journey, providing you with deeply personal insights and perspective—as well as practical, actionable advice. Nick Jonsson is the co-founder and managing director of the Singapore branch of EGN (Executives' Global Network) and dedicated to raising awareness and eliminating the stigma around the phenomenon of executive loneliness. He has identified that feelings of isolation and depression—personal struggles that he, himself, has had to grapple with and conquer—are much more widespread than we think.Work cultures often encourage executives to project success and achievement when, in fact, thousands actually suffer in silence and denial of their unspoken isolation. Often dismissed and rarely discussed, Nick brings to the forefront an open, honest and engrossing conversation about:✅ His own story of resilience and courage ✅ The challenges within an epidemic of isolation ✅ Smiling depression✅ The five steps to emerging stronger from a place of despair. This is very much a story of turning pain into purpose. It's lonely at the top — but it doesn't have to be.Timings: 0:00: Introduction0:41: Executive Loneliness - The Unspoken Isolation1:54: Nick's Story5:51: An Overview of Executives' Global Network9:18: The Challenges Within an Epidemic of Isolation12:23: Smiling Depression15:05: Have the Courage to be Vulnerable17:04: A Case Study of Courage 23:16: The 5 Stepped Pathway to Overcoming Isolation, Stress, Anxiety and Depression in the Modern Business World27:33: Statistics28:19: Closing Thoughts

They had a meditation class in the evenings. I knew about mindfulness and meditation, in the sense that I had an app, I tried some things, but I never really mastered it. So I saw this as a chance to master it. So while I don't know the name of this Buddhist monk, I have to say he had a huge impact on my life, because I started to really appreciate meditation. That made me connect better with a power greater than myself, connect with myself and really get a break and post my life and discover how to conquer executive loneliness. Effect on Emotions Mindfulness has made me much more aware. By being able to meditate and also to do prayer, I now try to pray in the morning and in the evening, just to hand things over which are challenging. It has really helped me to do that. And I will say it helped me to put my ego in shape and that sense that you know, I'm not the one running the show. It has made me grounded and helped me to manage to conquer executive loneliness. Thoughts on Breathing Breathing is super important. And one of my friends who I cycle with tomorrow when we go down, it's a long Ale, airline straight, basically 20 minutes place where we can cycle straight. He even managed to count his breathing the whole time. So he's so mindful of the breathing that he knows after the breath 266 times, for example. I cannot keep going that long. But it makes it more I'm getting at Bruce it makes a huge impact and he's a fantastic athlete. My coach is eight times the top 10 Corner finisher in Hawaii. He says that breathing makes the biggest impact on him in the sport as well. And he reminded me that when I wait for the bus or wait at the airport, that I should do some breathing exercises. So we're talking in the 80s here, and there was no way of dealing with it or working with it. At that time, there was not much awareness about it. I understand that these days, things have improved, luckily. I changed schools quite a lot and moved from one village to a bigger city, so you would normally team up with the kids who, perhaps were into sports, and others who were into studying and you would find your own little crowd. I was one of the good students in one school, but when I moved to another school, I suddenly found myself in the group of the kids with the lowest grades. Then you automatically were frozen out from the smarter kids. I remember that was a very, very challenging period for me. And it led to me not wanting to be in school. For the first time in my life, I think I was about 13 or 14 years of age when I didn't want to go to school, and I was trying to hide. That was not a good place to be in. With the rise of mental health issues and with the COVID pandemic forcing less and less interactions amongst co-workers and leaders, senior leaders in many organizations are suffering numerous new ailments and challenges. With this workplace scenario continuing to be a problem, as times progress with more and more complications arising, many leaders are reaching breaking points in their personal lives. With no one to reach out to, many of these leaders may be suffering from what Nick Jonsson, the Co-founder and Managing Director of Executives Global Network in Singapore, calls “executive loneliness” that arises when top executives are exposed to extreme and prolonged stress, resulting in an increase in anxiety, isolation, and depression. Watch this interview on YouTube here. https://youtu.be/b6TCGyysI-A On this episode, you will learn ✔︎ What is "Executive Loneliness" and how has the Pandemic caused us to make our mental and physical health a priority? ✔︎ Nick's story and why he is passionate about talking about what others would rather shy away from. ✔︎ What is "smiling depression" and how to recognize when change is needed for yourself, and others. ✔︎ 5 Steps to Recovery outlined in Nick's book "Executive Loneliness" ✔︎ Where to begin to make changes with our physical and mental health. ✔︎ What increasing your activity looks like and how to measure it. We just uncovered on EPISODE #188 “Putting Your Mental and Physical Health First”[i] the shocking statistic that “one-quarter of Americans intend to improve their mental health in 2022”[ii] and that according to a poll conducted by the American Psychiatric Association, “almost 70 million adults resolve to find ways to improve their mental health this coming year”[iii] but Nick Jonsson, from Singapore, shows us that this is a global issue, and he wants to raise awareness of this phenomenon, no longer being quiet about the issues he has personally faced himself. For those new, or returning guests, welcome back! I'm Andrea Samadi, author, and educator from Toronto, Canada, now in Arizona, and like many of you listening, have been fascinated with learning and understanding the science behind high performance strategies that we can use to improve our productivity in our schools, our sports, and workplace environments. My vision is to bring the experts to you, share their books, resources, and ideas to help you to implement their proven strategies, whether you are a teacher working in the classroom or in the corporate environment. In his book, Executive Loneliness,[iv] Nick Jonsson outlines that most executives and leaders often do nothing to address this phenomenon of “loneliness” for fear of appearing unsuccessful and frowned upon. Worst, he shares that not addressing it exacerbates the negative and difficult feelings, to the point where it becomes more and more difficult for them to function. Ultimately, it takes a toll on their whole life.[v] As we were looking for leaders around the world to launch of year, with a focus on physical and mental health, Nick Jonsson was the one I wanted to launch our year with to be our first interview of 2022. If you follow Nick on social media, (and I'll put all his links in the show notes) you will notice that he puts his physical health first (which we have shown on this podcast is one of the top health staples to make an impact on your overall physical and mental health) –you will see him riding his bike, hiking, and training at his local pool. Let's meet Nick Jonsson and see what we can learn together with his experience and knowledge, to put our mental and physical health first this year. Welcome Nick! Nick, I like to open up the podcast with a question where we can get to know you a bit better, and just from looking over your social media posts over the holidays, it was more like a lesson in Geography, with health and wellness, and family tied in. INTRO: Can you share a bit about what you've been up to over the holidays, that took you to 4 countries, with your family, and how you kept health at the forefront the entire time? I saw you training the other day at your local pool in Singapore—how are things these days with COVID protocols over there? Still very strict? Q1: It was important for me to launch 2022 with you, with your focus on mental and physical health, that's our focus for Season 7 of our podcast. I know this is the question that most people ask you, and I've linked the podcast you did with From Survivor to Thriver[vi] so our listeners can learn more about you, but can you just a bit of your background with the 2 stories that coincided, to bring you to not be quiet around a topic that many people still shy away from? Q2: I wonder if we can tie in this issue of executive loneliness, leading to an increase in anxiety, isolation, and depression, to something that our first responders might be going through these days or even those teachers who have been sent back to teaching online again, stress is at an all-time high in many sectors. I heard it described recently from someone working in policing who broke down and had to leave the field, to a desk job, and is on track for early retirement now, because all that pressure builds up over time (A good analogy I heard is like a garbage can getting filled up until the can overflows, just like the stress building up with a person until they can't take it anymore). You explain the pressure in the corporate world (all the meetings, being the first one in the office, the last one to leave, the one keeping it all together, and you still must be at your best and perform when there's little time for yourself. I saw the parallel with many different sectors who are being pushed to the limits in a way that's not far off from how you describe what you see with senior executives. Before we even begin to look at strategies and solutions for this serious issue, how would someone know that change needs to occur? 2B) Was the Pandemic an eye-opener for people to begin health programs? 2C) What are the trends you are seeing Internationally with working on the weekends? Q3: I love how you've clearly outlined what you think is important with your 5 Steps to Recovery in your book. You walk the reader through all the steps with some very important things to consider in the early stages, since no one usually talks about these things and I do think it's important that we do talk about the things that make us uncomfortable, for change to occur. Can you explain “smiling depression” and what to look for, and the support systems should we all know about? Q4: And what about for someone listening, who might be in a rut themselves, and making any sort of change is difficult, so where do you suggest for someone to begin to make the changes that will instigate an improvement with their health instead of staying in that cycle that leads to more overwhelmed? Q5: I love how you tie “Getting Healthy” into your book, and we've been focused on the Top 5 staples on this podcast (Nutrition, Sleep, Exercise, Relaxation/Meditation and Tools to Help Us with our Mental/Physical Health). It didn't take me longer than a minute to skim through your social media pages when I was writing these questions to notice that you practice what you preach, which is awesome! I saw you relaxing with your son, at the cinema in Sweden, your sleep data (WOW) showing 15 hours of sleep (you must really have needed it) and a 120 km (74 mile) bike ride (woah!) I thought I was cool after a 7-mile hike!! Can you take us through what you normally do for training, and what tools do you use to measure your workouts, sleep and rest? Q6: Is there anything important about your book that I have missed? Q7: What are some ways that people could work with you? https://nickjonsson.com/page/work-with-nick I've put all of the links to your social media accounts in the show notes, and I want to thank you very much Nick for speaking with me today, as this topic is timely and important. You've given us so many ideas to help our listeners who might be launching the year with some overwhelm, with some specific steps they can take to launch 2022 with their mental and physical health at the forefront of their mind, to truly make it their best year ever. Thanks Nick! Have an incredible Thursday! As we are in the middle of our holiday season, wherever you might be listening around the world, rushing about, tying up loose ends with work, with a focus somewhere in our heads towards whether we are ready, or not, for the holiday, where we can spend that quality time with those we love, I want to release a quick episode to thank you, the listener, for your support with this podcast. This year, we were listed in the Top 15 Best SEL Podcasts for 2021,[i] and Top 20 Best Neuroscience Podcasts for 2021[ii] and I owe this honor to you. Without listeners, and high quality guests, there is no podcast, so thank you for tuning in, sharing the episodes that you enjoy, and sending me messages and feedback with new ideas to continue to feature the leading experts in neuroscience, education and the brain. For those new, or returning guests, welcome back! I'm Andrea Samadi, author, and educator from Toronto, Canada, now in Arizona, and like many of you who tune in, have been fascinated with learning, understanding and applying the most current brain research to improve results in our lives (whether we are a teacher in the classroom, or using these ideas in the corporate space). This podcast uses Seasons to separate our content, and as we move into Season 7 at the start of the New Year, our theme will remain “Brain Health and Well-Being” as my friend Dan Vigliatore[iii] Health and PE Teacher from Toronto, Canada reminded me this year, that there's more to this podcast than providing meaningful content around neuroscience. Wellness education must be at the heart of everything we do, since our brain is involved in everything that we do, and everything that we are, and I do want to make that apparent for those listening, like Dan noticed. Especially with the fact that I began my teaching career as a PE teacher in the late 1990s. As we move into 2022, and plan for a new year of content, around the theme of Brain Health and Well-Being to optimize our cognitive, social and emotional competencies, I'm truly honored to have this opportunity to host this podcast, because the strategies that we are uncovering in each episode are not only for you, but they are transforming my results, as well! I do look forward to uncovering new ideas, strategies and research in this field in the New Year that we can all use to take our results to new heights. Especially since it's such an interesting time in our world. Last night, we were speaking with our pediatric cardiologist who told us that at the beginning of the Pandemic, almost 2 years ago, it was very quiet in his offices, and now, with the new spike in COVID cases, he is busy with new patients coming in, with symptoms they weren't experiencing in the early stages of the virus[iv], showing us how important our health remains for us. With everything going on in the world today, I'm sure that YOU will have health in the back of your head this whole time, knowing full well that 2022 is only a few days away, and before we know it, we will all be back in the swing of a New Year, with our old schedules, homework routines reestablished, and hopefully, healthy habits back on track, so for just a minute, I want take this moment to stop, pause and think about what's important at this time of year. Instead of releasing an episode about setting goals, like we did to launch the New Year Last year, with EPISODE #103[v] on “The Neuroscience of Leadership: 3 Ways to Reset, Recharge and Refuel Your Brain for Your Best Year Ever” that I still think is a good episode to revisit, for this week's BRAIN FACT FRIDAY and EPISODE #188, I want to cover “Putting Our Physical and Mental Health First: To Ensure a New Generation of Thriving Adults.” Our next generation needs us to model the way. The signs pointing in this direction have been clear the whole time of the Pandemic, but have you noticed there's a sense of urgency around mental and physical well-being at this time? I saw it with one of my first XMAS cards that came in the mail. I've been getting a Christmas card every year from my mentor Bob Proctor and his wife Linda. It always makes me smile to keep in touch with people who have had a profound influence on my life, and this year, when I opened the card, there was a handwritten note highlighting the importance of a “healthy” and joyous 2022. This was early December, before the Omicron Variant began impacting people around the world, but I noticed this, and it stuck in my head “pay attention to health this year.” Then I remembered that my next interview is scheduled for the middle of January, with Nick Jonsson,[vi] author of the #1 International Best Selling book on Executive Loneliness whose website headliner says “mental health issues are rising dramatically” especially in the workplace and I'd say the writing on the wall is clear where our focus needs to be in 2022, especially if we want to be stable, strong and predictable for the children in our lives, who watch and respond to everything that we do. So, for this week's Brain Fact Friday, DID YOU KNOW: “That one-quarter of Americans intend to improve their mental health in 2022”[vii] and that according to a poll conducted by the American Psychiatric Association, “almost 70 million adults resolve to find ways to improve their mental health this coming year.”[viii] American Psychiatric Association president Vivian Pender, MD thinks this statistic is “important and encouraging” but points out of the “level of variation among demographic groups” and that “psychiatrists need to understand these trends.” She references a poll conducted by APA's Healthy Minds from Dec. 6-8th with a nationwide sample of 2,119 healthy adults and 37% of them revealed “anxieties about the state of their mental health approaches.” The poll listed the following resolutions to make an impact on mental health as meditation (53%) therapy (37%), purposeful social media hiatus (35%), journaling (32%), accessing a mental health app (26%) and seeing a psychiatrist (1/5th of the participants). Since there is such an important and timely movement toward mental health and well-being at this time, I want to provide the TOP STRATEGIES that we've covered over the past 2 years on this podcast, that would fall into the categories of the top modalities for improving mental and physical health. STRATEGY 1: Meditation There's so much to this strategy, that it can be overwhelming for a beginner to know how to start. I learned something valuable from each of these episodes and I hope that it helps you to begin, or fine tune your meditation practice. EPISODE 25: Mick Neustadt covers “How Meditation and Mindfulness Changes Your Life”[ix] and this episode is great for people who are new to meditation and mindfulness. He explains what mindfulness is, why it's so important for young people, and what the research is saying about the importance of implementing a mindfulness program into your daily life. EPISODE #98: Dr. Dawson Church covers “The Science Behind Using Meditation: Rewiring Your Brain for Happiness”[x] where he explains how he was able to turn his attention away from the horrible tragedy of losing his home in the 2017 Northern California wildfires, to create thoughts, habits and behaviors to support a happy life. I still use Dawson Church's Bliss Brain Meditations every morning when I first wake up, because there's something very peaceful about them. EPISODE #28: Dr. Dan Siegel, a clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine covers “Mindsight: The Basis for Social and Emotional Intelligence”[xi] taking us into the results he is seeing with understanding the “mind” in others (whether in schools or the workplace). EPISODE #60: I cover a deep dive into Dr. Dan Siegel's Wheel of Awareness Meditation[xii] for anyone new, learning about what to expect from this meditation. Dr. Siegel's guided meditation has the potential for fascinating insights and results, and I will always point to this one, for anyone looking to strengthen their mind. EPISODE #154: Author and movie producer Tom Cronin on “The Portal Book and Film: How Meditation Can Save the World”[xiii] if you want to see how Tom transformed his life with meditation. Strategy 2: Accessing a Mental Health App or Tool In order to dig deep and make improvements with our brain and cognition, there are tools out there that can help. Before knowing about these tools, I thought the only way to strengthen my brain was through nutrition and exercise. EPISODE #108: CEO of Fisher Wallace Laboratories Kelly Roman who covers “Wearable Medical Devices for Anxiety, Depression, and Sleep/Stress Management.”[xiv] Fisher Wallace has over 70,000 patients and 10,000 subscribers using their devices and has continued to run three sizable clinical trials during the pandemic, investigating how neurostimulation is a strong contender as a treatment for anxiety and depression compared to drug use. EPISODE #120: My Personal Review of the Fisher Wallace Medical Device[xv] came from following month following my interview with Kelly Roman after I had a chance to test the device myself. This is to date is our #1 most downloaded episode of all time with over 5K downloads and the episode I receive the most emails, and DMs on social media about. People want to know that there is a real person behind this review, who really did use the device. I would add a photo of me wearing it to prove I do use it but think the model in the picture looks much better than I do. All joking aside, this is a serious topic, and the emails I have received tell me that people are desperate for solutions when it comes to mental health. While I tested this device to help improve my sleep, I did notice feeling less anxious and worried about things, and it had a calming effect on me. Like I tell anyone who emails me, I highly suggest this product, and if you use it consistently, the way it's designed to be used (20 minutes twice a day) you should notice an improvement in whatever it is that you are looking to improve (among other things) like I did. The only way to know this, would be to try it. They do offer a hassle-free 30-day trial period so you can return the device with no questions asked if you don't want to keep it. We had a BONUS EPISODE in February of this year, with World Renowned Neuroscientist Dr. Carolyn Leaf on “Cleaning Up Your Mess: 5 Simple Steps”[xvi] She has an app that goes along with her book, called Neurocycle and I would say it's the most effective way to clean up your mind (other than going to therapy, that I have not done) that I have ever seen. She helps you to pinpoint a problem that you have, and eliminate it in a process she calls Neurocycling. EPISODE #106: I Review Dr. Leaf's “Cleaning Up Your Mental Mess” book and Neurocycle App.[xvii] EPISODE #134: with Kristen Holmes from Whoop.com we cover “Unlocking a Better You: Measuring Sleep, Recovery, and Strain with a WHOOP Device.”[xviii] EPISODE #135: I offer my biggest AHA moments from my interview with Kristen Holmes on “Recovery Strategies to Build Resiliency Against Physical, Mental and Emotional Stressors.”[xix] I haven't been wearing this device for a full year just yet, but there are immense benefit if you are able to measure your sleep, HRV, recovery and even your skin temperature and respiratory rates, on a daily basis. EPISODE #179: Sun Sachs, the CEO of Rewire Fitness covers their “First-To-Market Neuro Performance Mobile App for Athletes”[xx] This interview I really needed this app before and after, as I had just tested positive to COVID the day before and was right in the middle of the wonderful symptoms. I think that Sun Sachs' story was so engaging, and his voice was so calming, that I quickly forgot I was under the weather that day, and diligently use this app to help prime my mind before and after workouts. Strategy 3: Exercise I can't leave exercise off the table, but have put this strategy last, because I usually put it first. The research points to the fact that exercise can help us to achieve optimal physical and mental health and learning about this research really can help us to all put exercise first to move the needle with health and wellness in 2022. EPISODE #116: with Best Selling Author John J Ratey, MD on “The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain”[xxi] who explains why the brain is primed for learning after exercise. EPISODE #118: with a Deep Dive into John J Ratey's Books[xxii] EPISODE #123: with Northeastern University Professor Chuck Hillman, Ph.D. on “The Impact of Exercise on the Brain and Learning”[xxiii] On this episode we dive into the brain scans Dr. Hillman did showing how exercise had a clear impact on student's during test taking and can help us to all see of the importance of physical activity on a student's academic performance. To Review This Week's Brain Fact Friday: DID YOU KNOW: “That one-quarter of Americans intend to improve their mental health in 2022”[xxiv] and that according to a poll conducted by the American Psychiatric Association, “almost 70 million adults resolve to find ways to improve their mental health this coming year.” With the TOP 3 strategies I've shared with you (Meditation, Using a Mental Health App or Tool and Exercise) I wonder what you found to be the most insightful and interesting. Your brain will ONLY pay attention to what it finds interesting, which would be the first step towards making lasting change with whatever health and wellness strategy you choose. If you are ready for to make 2022 your best year ever (mentally and physically) pick one strategy that you find the most interesting, and start with that. Have a happy and healthy holiday, and I'll see you next week. The motivation for the book was the learning that senior business leaders felt quite lonely in the way they had to make decisions. The background research leading upto the book, showed that upto 30% of senior business leaders felt they were depressed. Following this up with the in-person interviews brought out specific stories that's captured in the book. A key finding was that senior leaders are often working across cultures and laws over various countries which impacts decision making and makes it complex. Whilst some leaders might be comfortable in discussing and arriving at a collaborative decision, the culture demands a more authoritarian approach of being provided the solutions sans the discussion. Another interesting finding was that the vast majority of senior leaders do not want to talk about this loneliness to their superior or company. This stems from the fear that it would not be favourably looked upon and could be detrimental to their career. Sharing the personal story is to provide strength to others on how to be able to lead oneself. To be able to accept there is a problem and then seek out help is actually displaying strong self-leadership. Nick's personal story illustrates how the loneliness affects senior leaders and guides the reader to having the steps of taking action. The key message, for all good leaders is, be transparent and observant. Be willing to be vulnerable in order to create transparency and connectivity. Through that an important conversation might just happen which would be of help to an associate, a colleague or someone connected to you.
