Screenwriting legend Zak Penn talks about how he got so savvy in the business of show. We talk about how coming to LA and scouting out the city geared him up for his big move after college and his sale of “The Last Action Hero” started him on a 35 year journey of being one of Hollywood's most sought after writers. We talk about the good times with Speilberg, JJ Abrams, Shawn Levy, Ryan Reynolds, & Dwayne Johnson and we talk about the bad times with others. Bio: Zak Penn's career began as a screenwriter when he sold his first script, LAST ACTION HERO, at the age of twenty-three. Since then, Penn has become known for his work on numerous films based on Marvel comics, including X-MEN 2 and X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, ELEKTRA, THE INCREDIBLE HULK and THE AVENGERS. He has also dabbled in other genres, writing scripts for disparate films such as P.C.U., BEHIND ENEMY LINES and SUSPECT ZERO.Penn's shift into independent cinema began when he collaborated with his idol, Werner Herzog, on the script for RESCUE DAWN. Penn directed and co-starred with Herzog in INCIDENT AT LOCH NESS, his award-winning “hoax” documentary about the legendary director's attempts to make a film about the equally legendary monster. THE GRAND, Penn's second completely improvised film, was his third film with Herzog, and featured an eclectic cast including Woody Harrelson, David Cross, Ray Romano, Cheryl Hines, Dennis Farina and Gabe Kaplan. In addition, Penn co-wrote the original story for ANTZ and produced the animated film OSMOSIS JONES. He has also acted in a number of independent films, including STAR MAPS and CHUCK & BUCK. His first foray into television was the critically acclaimed original series ALPHAS starring David Strathairn. Many folks know that the Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd came out of Jacksonville, Florida. But they weren't the only big southern rock band to arise from that city. Molly Hatchet was another southern rock band from Jacksonville, also sporting three guitars. The band formed in 1971 and shares a lot of the inspiration and influence of Skynyrd. their best selling album was their second one, Flirtin' with Disaster, which peaked at number 19 and became a 2x platinum seller in the United States. The name of the band comes from the legend of a Salem-era prostitute who supposedly mutilated and decapitated her clients. The band was not only famous for its music, but for its album cover art. Fantasy artist Frank Frazetta created the cover, depicting a Viking-like warrior with a winged helmet and battle axe. Personnel for Flirtin' with Disaster included Danny Joe Brown on vocals, guitarists Dave Hlubek, Steve Holland, and Duane Roland, Banner Thomas on bass, and Bruce Crump on drums. While Flirtin' with Disaster is the band's most successful album, they also found considerable success with the eponymous debut album released prior to Flirtin' and the third album, “Beatin' the Odds,” released with new front man Jimmy Farrar who replaced Danny Joe Brown who left for a number of reasons including diabetes. The band would not achieve similar success with its future albums, though Brown would return to the band by their fifth album. Molly Hatchet remained a popular touring band, though today all the original members have died. Friend of the show Craig Dale joins us as Wayne brings us this Southern rock classic for the podcast. Let the Good Times RollWhile this may be considered a deeper cut, the track which closes out the album did receive significant airplay on rock stations when the album came out. “Give me wine, women, whiskey and rock 'n' roll and let me sleep my days away.” Flirtin' with DisasterThis is the timeless classic from the album, the title track, and the opening song for side two. Although this is considered their breakout hit and highest charting, it only went to number 42 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song has been used in a number of films and television shows including Suspect Zero, Straw Dogs, My Name is Earl, and King of the Hill.Good Rockin'This deep cut is one in which all band members share writing credits. It was not released as a single but did appear as a B-side to their second single, “It's All Over Now.” It is simply a straightforward rock party song - “So if you're feeling good, if you feel alright we're going to have a rock 'n' roll time tonight.”Whiskey ManThe leading track from the album is a well-known Molly Hatchet song, though it failed to chart. It is an anti-drinking song in which the lyrics discuss the hazards of alcohol. “You start to get straight, then you get weak, can't you see you're on a losing streak?” ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Coal Miner's Daughter by Loretta Lynn (from the motion picture “Coal Miner's Daughter”)Sissy Spacek won the Academy Award for her portrayal of Loretta Lynn in this biographical drama. STAFF PICKS:Back On My Feet Again by The BabysBruce brings us the number 33 hit by John Waite and the Babys - their fourth and final top 40 hit. This is off their album “Union Jacks.” They opened for Journey on tour, and their keyboardist, Jonathan Cain, would wind up joining Journey when the Babys broke up. What I Like About You by The RomanticsRob presents a party song that got a lot of airplay with a 50's/60's feel. It was written in 1979 and it came out on the debut album from the Romantics. The lead singer, Wally Palmar, is the drummer for the group. The song only made it to number 49 on the US charts, but its garage band feel and party credentials have given it a timeless quality that fares better the longer it is around.Magic by Olivia Newton JohnLynch tests Wayne's patience with this number 1 hit from Australia's own Olivia Newton John. It was recorded for the soundtrack to the 1980 musical fantasy film “Xanadu” and was released as its lead single. The song was written by John Farrar who wrote a number of Olivia Newton John's hits.Goodbye Blue Sky by Pink FloydFriend of the show Craig Dale brings us a haunting tune from the Pink Floyd album “The Wall.” This track reveals how the horror of war and the blitz formed a brink in the wall of isolation the protagonist forms in his descent into madness. The child speaking at the front of the song is actually band member Roger Waters' son, Harry.Rockin' Heaven Down by HeartWayne closes out this week's podcast with his favorite Heart song from the album “Bebe Le Strange.” The track features Nancy Wilson starting the song on a 12-string electric guitar, and Nancy Wilson's fierce vocals. “Hoot into the night, that look from eye to eye, a flash gets passed around, a band of wild angels rockin' heaven down.”

Sometimes the quests we set out to achieve take us on a journey we never expected. A chance encounter can potentially change the course of our lives and set us in a new direction where we are utilized and needed. Today's guests illustrate just how the course of a person's life can take on new meaning. Not only are they doing humanitarian work, but they were recently featured in the Netflix documentary, “The Times Square Killer,” where convicted serial killer, Richard Cottingham's known crimes are uncovered. Cottingham has admitted to 11 murders, but he has stated that he has committed well over 85 and under 100, that have yet to be solved. Suspect Zero welcomes, Jennifer Weiss and Peter Vronsky, the only people Cottingham has opened up to....listen to their story.
Suspect Zero discusses The Balcony Strangler with guest, Vanessa Brown, author of the book, “The Forest City Killer: A Serial Murderer, A Cold-Case Sleuth, and a Search for Justice." London, Ontario, which is proudly known as, "The Forest City," is home to nearly 400,000 residents. Many of these residents were oblivious to the Monsters that lived among them.
Suspect Zero invites special guest, Vanessa Brown, author of the book, “The Forest City Killer: A Serial Murderer, A Cold-Case Sleuth, and a Search for Justice,” where we are introduced to Jackie English, a 15-year-old who was abducted on her way home from her waitressing job at the Metropolitan on October 4, 1969. Jackie was supposedly taking a bus home, until a witness came forward to say she got into someone's car instead. Vanessa will talk about her theories into this case and more.
Suspect Zero analyze Jack Unterweger, an Austrian serial killer who murdered Margaret Schafer in what appeared to be an isolated murder. He was convicted in 1974 and was serving a life sentence when he once again used his manipulation to his advantage. He wasn't finished with what he started and many would regret ever believing the mastermind behind this reign of terror.
Suspect Zero take a deep look into the Monster of Florence. Between 1974 and 1985, seven couples were murdered while having sex in parked cars in the hills of Florence, Italy. With many twists and turns, this case has yet to be solved and although more than 100,000 men were questioned and investigated, it only spun a web of deceit that made things even more confusing. Many men were accused of being the monster, having their lives turned upside down and into an utter nightmare. While the real monster continued to carry out his sick and evil ritual.
Suspect Zero discuss David Parker Ray, AKA, “The Toy Box Killer." Ray soundproofed a truck trailer which he called his "toy box", and equipped it with items used for sexual torture. He would kidnap between five and six girls a year, holding each of them captive for around three to four months. During this period he would sexually abuse his victims, sometimes involving his dog or his wife (who participated willingly in her husband's crimes), and often torture them with surgical instruments. Then Ray would either kill his victims or drug them with barbiturates in an attempt to erase their memories of what had happened before abandoning them by the side of the road.
Suspect Zero welcomes special guest, John Allore. Since 2002, Theresa's brother, John Allore – whose podcast, Who Killed Theresa?– has continued the investigation, identifying 14 other unsolved murders from 1975 to 1981 which he believes may be connected. Beginning in 2018, John Allore started to focus on other Quebec cases from the 1970s through the present era, cases that further suggest systemic failures in how investigations are carried out. They also talk about Luc Gregoire, a Canadian serial killer, who looks to be a viable suspect.

Suspect Zero takes a closer and more detailed look at The Chicago Millennium Strangler(s), Whose victims, predominantly African-American and Hispanic women and teens between the ages of 18 and 58 and were strangled and left in abandoned buildings, alleys, garbage bins, parks and snowdrifts. There is much speculation around three separate serial killers who have been operating in Chicago since at least 2001.
Suspect Zero looks into the lesser known case of Michael Scott Magliolo, a nomad who would hitch rides with truckers to carry out his “quests” around Nashville, Ohio, and quite possibly other places that we are unaware of.
Suspect Zero will visit the 1972 cold case of Jeannette DePalma who went missing from her Springfield, NJ home. Law enforcement authorities have denied that her murder was a result of Satanic rituals. Further controversy was aroused when it was discovered that the body had been found on a cliff known to locals for several decades as, "The Devil's Teeth".
Suspect Zero will be discussing at the case of Mike DeBardeleben, a convicted kidnapper, rapist, counterfeiter, and suspected serial killer, who became known as the "mall passer" due to his practice of passing counterfeit bills in shopping malls bordering interstate highways across the United States.
Suspect Zero invites their students to take a look into the unsolved case of Susie Streeter, Stacy McCall, and Sheryl Levitt, “The Springfield Three,” who went missing on June 7, 1992, in Springfield, MO. Their bodies have yet to been found and brought home to their families. Join us in helping solve this case!
