A conversation with Chris Mosdell – poet and lyricist who has written for a vast array of musicians including Yellow Magic Orchestra, Michael Jackson, Sarah Brightman, Tatsuro Yamashita and many more, and in 2023 was honoured with Japan's Classics Day Cultural Foundation Prize, presented by a member of the Imperial family. Mosdell shares the process of writing words for music, the story of why one of his most famous pieces was locked in Michael Jackson's vaults for decades, being inspired by Kyoto's 10th century "social media", and how the hum of cities has an impact on his words.

A few songs from Pacific, the album we're discussing today, have made it onto city pop playlists and algorithms on all types of streaming services. It might sound a little loungier, a little  jazzier than what you might expect from a city pop album, but the names in the credits should be familiar to any city pop fan. Haruomi Hosono, Shigeru Suzuki, and Tatsuro Yamashita are responsible for this record and it would go on to influence the sound of city pop and genre beyond for years to come.We sit down with indie-pop duo Pearl & the Oysters to talk about the plentiful homages and quotes on this album, the influence of this record on their sound, and the incredible musicianship on display.Check out our Spotify playlist of as many songs as we can find on there! In the late 1970s a young Tatsuro Yamashita was making a name for himself as a prolific session musician and songwriter. He launched his solo career, but didn't see big commercial success at first. Yamashita took a trip down to the US and learned some tips from Western producers and began building up his solo work back when he returned to Japan. This would include some of his most iconic songs, like Ride on Time and Loveland Island, both of which are included in this Greatest Hits comp we're talking about today.Dr. Jayson Chun, Japanese and Korean pop culture professor, sits down with us to talk about why city pop resonates with Western listeners, CM songs, and Tatsuro's work with Charles Calello.Check out our Spotify playlist of as many songs as we can find on there! Volume 8 of one of Japan's greatest inventions, City Pop, is a tribute to all the schools in Japan that are in the midst of preparing for their huge school events, the "undokai", otherwise known as the "sports festival"!   City Pop is a fusion of Western styled pop, rock, disco, funk, R&B, Adult Contemporary and yacht rock. This Japanese concoction had its heyday during the late 70s and early 80s, a time when Japan was riding high in its bubble economy.   We hope that you enjoy the visuals of today's show as well! They are of various clips of school festivals from throughout Japan. I'll credit each one as soon as I can.

Welcome to episode 49 of Holly Jolly X'masu! In this episode, I'll be wrapping up my discussion about Eiji Kitamura and his Christmas music, with his fantastic 2001 album, “Santa Clarinet.” While Akira Ishikawa's “Drum Christmas Drum” kicked off my interest in Japanese Christmas music, the Jazz, Group Sounds and Mood Kayo albums of the 1960s really cemented my obsession, while the City Pop Christmas music from the 1980s broadened my collecting horizons and led to me finding an even wider variety of music. One of the things I love about Eiji Kitamura is that he serves as a bridge from the earliest days of Japanese Pop music to today. He got his start around the same time Hibari Misora's “Hitoribocchi no Christmas” gave birth to Japanese Christmas Pop, so he has been an eyewitness to the genre as it's evolved. That's part of why I'd love to see him do an album where he covers all the big Japanese Christmas songs, from Kai Band's “Anna,” to Yumi Matsutoya's “Koibito ga Santa Claus,” Keisuke Kuwata's “Merry X'mas In Summer” and “White Lovers,” and, of course, Tatsuro Yamashita's “Christmas Eve.” I have a couple Jazz albums with covers of a lot of those songs, but having one from Eiji Kitamura would be something special, considering his long history in the industry. I hope you've enjoyed learning about Eiji Kitamura. Join me back here next month for my special 50th episode, where I'll be talking about the 1977 compilation, “Merry Christmas (Bouquet of Hearts Present Series),” from King Records. It's a great album in its own right with an interesting history, but it's also an instrumental album for me personally, not just in the way it helped me improve my research and collecting strategy, but in the long-standing connection it's given me with a like-minded collector in Japan. It's a double LP and will take a lot of work to prepare, so at this point I'm not sure what else I'll cover next month, but I'm sure I'll figure something out. As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you'd like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know. Remember, I've added a button to my Ko-fi page. If you'd like to support me one cup of coffee at a time, a donation is only $3. I've also opened a Redbubble store. I only have a couple designs up, but keep an eye on it as I'll be trying to add more. Half of any proceeds or donations received will be donated to support the people of Ukraine, while the rest will be used to purchase new Japanese Christmas music to review for future episodes. You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And if you get a chance, leave me a review on iTunes. Thanks!

Hi everybody ! This week in MUTEKI, we drive through several musics composed for japanese TV commercials and some others which were also reused for advertising purposes. Today also, let's travel between Japan and California, guided by ALPHA from LGTZ.COM, with a smooth and classy collab initiated by DJ T.O, and let's discover the latest release from another talented producer (and fly from GB to Japan this time), DAN TANDA, who mixed the late and legendary MF Doom's flow with one of the Archipelago's 80s most revered artists: Tatsuro Yamashita. Welcome to the first episode of season two of Holly Jolly X'masu! In this episode, I kick off 2021 talking about Ginji Ito’s 1983 album, Winter Wonder Land – I Thank You. This winter-themed album contains a trio of Christmas songs. It’s a fun, lighthearted start to the new year. One thing I discovered as I started collecting Japanese Christmas music was that some of the best songs didn’t come from actual Christmas albums. While some Western artists will occasionally include a Christmas song on a regular album, or a mention Christmas in a song that really has nothing to do with it, having a Christmas song appear on a non-Christmas album appears to be much more common in Japan. The best example of this is Tatsuro Yamashita’s “Christmas Eve.” Arguably the most popular Japanese Christmas song, it came from his album Melodies, which was a straight City Pop album. I think a big part of that has to do with how most Japanese view Christmas as a romantic, secular holiday. While “O Holy Night” isn’t likely to appear on a non-Christmas album, finding a Christmas love song on an album is fairly common. Winter-themed albums are also fairly common in Japan. With entire albums dedicated to the winter season, it’s even more likely to find a few songs mentioning Christmas or Santa Claus. A couple of the more notable ones are Yumi Matsutoya’s Surf & Snow – Volume One, and Seiko Matsuda’s Snow Garden, both of which produced hugely popular Christmas songs. While I generally stick to more traditional Christmas albums, I’ll eventually devote episodes to a few of these winter or non-Christmas albums, particularly the ones that produced the biggest Christmas hits. While researching this episode, I couldn’t find much about how Ginji Ito’s albums fared on the charts. I know that several of the songs from Winter Wonder Land remain popular with his fans, but they’re not songs that I ever see included on lists of the most popular Christmas songs in Japan. This album is also almost entirely absent from video sites, such as YouTube and Daily Motion. A friend in Japan was able to find a video for just one of the songs on a Japanese site I’d never heard of. It’s a fun album and I genuinely enjoy each of the songs, so it’s a shame it’s not more accessible. That said, I always like featuring albums that generally can’t be heard elsewhere, and this really fits the bill. As always, thanks for listening, and I hope this episode helps you start the new year on the right foot. Join me in February for a special episode for Black History Month. There aren’t many Japanese Christmas albums that fit the theme, but noted American saxophonist Sam “The Man” Taylor’s 1968 album, In Christmas, release only in Japan, makes the cut, even if on a technicality. It’s a wonderful album and one you don’t want to miss. Any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If you’d like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know. Remember, I've added a button to my Ko-fi page. Surgiu no Período Yayoi (300 A.C. Whoa, what’s this? We’re actually talking about a recent movie for once? We’re really releasing a podcast we recorded recently and not over a year ago? WHAT’S GOING ON?!?! Well, let me tell you! VLord and I haven’t gotten a chance to record many new @ Movies podcasts this year, and we’ve taken such a long time to sift through our backlog of already recorded podcasts there hasn’t been a need. However, we’ve still been seeing as many movies as ever, and I’ve been writing reviews for some that I’ve really wanted to share my thoughts on. Last week I saw Mamoru Hosoda's newest film Mirai and wrote a review of it, but I really wanted to discuss it on the podcast as well. Unfortunately, VLord’s too busy and most of my friends who’d be interested in discussing it with me haven’t seen it yet. So I’ve decided to try something different and record a solo @ Movies podcast on Mirai, essentially reading out my review for those of you who haven’t read it yet or would prefer listening to it. If you guys like this format I’ll try and do more solo @ Movies episodes for movies we can’t record a full-length episode on in the future! But enough talk about the future, let’s talk about Mirai! Enjoy the show, and follow us on twitter at @manga_mavericks, on tumblr at mangamavericks.tumblr.com, and subscribe to us on Youtube. You can follow the hosts on twitter at @LumRanmaYasha and @VLordGTZ. Don’t forget to also subscribe to us on iTunes and leave us reviews to help us curate the show and create better content! We take your suggestions and feedback very seriously and want to figure out more ways to reach out and interact with you guys, so please leave some responses! You can also drop us a line in the comments below, comment in the Manga Mavericks thread on Animation Revelation, tweet at us, or send an e-mail to mangamavericks@gmail.com! As always, thanks for listening! Thanks for listening! Music Featured: “Mirai no Theme” by Tatsuro Yamashita “Uta no Kisha” by Tatsuro Yamashita

Back in the present, our heroes gear up for a break-in at the local police station to question a cunning murderer. With little practical or academic experience, can this plan hope to succeed? James gets cocky. Aniyah makes a human connection. Brim owns a car. Our theme is "Daydream" by Tatsuro Yamashita off the album Ride on Time. Remixed by Brendon Bigley.
