Glen Pitre’s first film “Belizaire: the Cajun” (1986) starring Armand Assante was backed by Robert Redford’s Sundance Institute. Pitre would go on to have more successes, including “The Scoundrel’s Wife” (2002) starring Tatum O’Neal. Roger Ebert, the late film critic on the Chicago Sun-Times, described Pitre as a “legendary American regional director.” Pitre’s latest effort is “Mary, Queen of Vietnam,” a documentary about the state’s thriving Vietnamese population. Pitre joins Errol Laborde, executive editor of Louisiana Life, along with podcast producer Kelly Massicot to talk about film making on the Bayou. Oh yes, we will also discover his favorite boudin, white or red.
In 1974 Tatum O’Neal became the youngest recipient to win a competitive Academy Award for a Supporting Role in the movie classic, Paper Moon. Frankly I find it confusing she won for supporting as she is very clearly the lead of the film but ANYWAY - Madeline Kahn was rightfully nominated for the correct category but Tatum was victorious. Linda Blair was nominated for a little movie called The Exorcist, perhaps you remember from your childhood nightmares? Sylvia ‘Juno Your Case Worker!’ Sidney was nominated for Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams and Candy Clark for American Graffiti. Who do you think should have won? Join host Kyle Brownrigg with guest Bil Antoniou (co-host of Bad Gay Movies Podcast & My Old Addiction Movie Reviews)
Tatum O'Neal is the youngest person ever to win a competitive Academy Award when in 1974 at the age of 10 won for her performance in Paper Moon. She's had a storied acting career appearing in many other popular films including Little Darlings, The Bad News Bears and International Velvet. In 2011 she wrote Found: A Daughter’s Journey Home—a moving memoir of discovery and reconciliation. In my interview with Tatum we discuss this memoir and her relationships with her family.
The original classic that could only come from the gritty filmmaking of the 1970s. Starring Walter Matthau, Tatum O'Neal, and Jackie Earle Haley. Directed by Michael Ritchie.
Filmmaker Peter Bogdanovich and Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz talk about TCM's new podcast The Plot Thickens: I'm Still Peter Bogdanovich. Ben reveals that he was initially nervous to meet Peter because of a longstanding controversy involving Ben’s grandfather, Orson Welles, and Citizen Kane. Peter shares stories about his friendships with Welles, Alfred Hitchcock, Howard Hawks, John Ford, and many others, and how their advice kept him from making some rookie mistakes when he eventually got to sit in the director's chair himself. He remembers making his first movie for Roger Corman with horror icon Boris Karloff, how he tricked the government of Singapore into letting him film the movie Saint Jack, and the scene that earned a 9-year-old Tatum O’Neal an Oscar for Paper Moon...but only after 2 days of shooting and 25 grueling takes! Peter discusses envy and success in Hollywood, his relationships with Cybill Shepherd and Dorothy Stratten, and how he managed to finish his favorite film They All Laughed in the wake of Stratten’s tragic murder. Then Ben Mankiewicz talks about the films of Edward G. Robinson, the passion that his fans have for Turner Classic Movies and the films of Hollywood’s Golden Age, and why he hopes (and indeed predicts) that moviegoers will eventually return to theaters when the Coronavirus finally subsides. Plus Peter does impressions of everyone from Cary Grant to Jimmy Stewart, recalls some of the famous movies that he turned down, and the time he got his ass kicked by the real Hell’s Angels on set! A while back, we covered the tumultuous relationship between John McEnroe and Tatum O’Neal and learned something funny: TV legend and record shattering film director Penny Marshall and Hollywood royalty/Star Wars icon Carrie Fisher threw each other a birthday party every year. This week, we have the not-that-trashy divorces of lifelong best friends Penny Marshall and Carrie Fisher. Stacie has Penny, who was married twice, first to the father of her daughter, and next to fellow TV legend and later film director Rob Reiner. The first lasted three years, the second ten, but it seems that Penny maintained warm ties to both. Alicia has Carrie, who was in a long relationship with musician Paul Simon that included a brief marriage in the middle. Simon’s song Hearts and Bones documents the end of the relationship, but it sure seems like their love never really died. Can’t get enough #trashcandy? Walter Matthau, Tatum O'Neal, Jackie Earl Haley & The Bad News Bears - On this week's episode of WatchThis w/RickRamos I'm flying solo and talking one of the most underrated films of the 1970's, Michael Ritchie's 1976 Little League Epic The Bad News Bears (1976). With standout performances from Walter Matthau as the drunken, miserable, ex-baseball player and current pool cleaner, Morris Buttermaker, and Tatum O'Neil, Jackie Earl Haley, and Vic Morrow in supporting roles, this is a film that is a well-loved classic, however has never received the critical recognition that it deserves. Kirsty Young's castaway is the tennis player and commentator, John McEnroe. He won three singles and five doubles Wimbledon titles, four singles and four doubles at the US Open and was ranked number one in the world for four consecutive years in the 1980s. John McEnroe grew up in New York and didn't pick up a tennis racquet until the age of eight, but his talent was quickly spotted and he began to compete in junior tournaments. In 1977, aged 18 and between high school and university, he qualified for the main draw at Wimbledon and reached the semi-finals where he lost to Jimmy Connors. By the end of the tournament his on-court behaviour - shouting, haranguing umpires and abusing his racquet - earned him the nickname 'Superbrat'. He made his first Wimbledon final against Bjorn Borg in 1980. In one of the finest matches in history, despite winning a tiebreak 18-16 to win the fourth set, he lost the match. He beat Borg the following year to win his first Wimbledon singles title. 1984 was the best year in John's career: he won 82 out of 85 matches he played, but it was also the year when he was beaten at the French Open by Ivan Lendl, who replaced him as number one. John married the actress Tatum O'Neal in 1986. They divorced in the mid-1990s and he has been married to the singer Patty Smyth since 1997. Since retiring in 1992, in addition to his role as tennis commentator, he has been a coach and runs his own tennis academy. He still plays in tennis tournaments. Producer: Cathy Drysdale.
