In a conversation with CancerNetwork®, Nader Sanai, MD discussed the current state of the glioblastoma field, highlighting ongoing research efforts to help improve outcomes among patients with this disease.  Sanai is the director of the Ivy Brain Tumor Center and J.N Harber Professor of Neurological Surgery, Francis and Dionne Najafi chair for Neurosurgical Oncology, and chief of neurological oncology at Barrow Neurological Institute. Specifically, Sanai described plans to assess treatment with niraparib (Zejula) compared with temozolomide (Temodar) in a population of patients with newly diagnosed MGMT unmethylated glioblastoma as part of the phase 3 Gliofocus study (NCT06388733).1 He contextualized the rationale for conducting this study by focusing on findings from a proof-of-concept hybrid study (NCT05076513) and detailing how they supported additional investigation into the utility of niraparib.  According to findings from this proof-of-concept study presented at the 2024 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting, the median overall survival (OS) was 20.3 months among patients who received niraparib in combination with radiotherapy.2 Additionally, data showed that niraparib reached drug concentrations in Gadolinium-nonenhancing newly diagnosed glioblastoma tissue exceeding those of any other evaluated PARP inhibitors; investigators identified no new safety signals after combining niraparib with radiotherapy in this population. With the Gliofocus trial, Sanai and co-investigators aim to provide a clinically meaningful quality of life benefit with niraparib-based therapy beyond a marginally valuable statistical advantage. By evaluating treatment with niraparib, investigators look to improve historical survival rates reported with standard-of-care options among patients with unmethylated disease. “What we're looking to do with this trial is set a benchmark that's clinically relevant for patients and providers. The [OS] target for the study is 18 months, which is to effectively convert [a] 12-month natural history to a natural history closer to the methylated glioblastoma population,” Sanai said. “We think that is a meaningful transformation of a difficult patient population, a significant chunk of survival time that would be beneficial to patients, providers, and caregivers. Importantly, [it may also mean] an advantage for quality of life, which is of paramount importance for this patient population.” References 1.        A study comparing niraparib with temozolomide in adult participants with newly-diagnosed, MGMT unmethylated glioblastoma. Today I explore some key Sufi teachings compatible with the contemporary mystic or gnostic path called Sant Mat. The Sants and Radhaswamis of the living present highly value the mystic poetry and wisdom of Rumi, Hafiz, Rabia, Sarmad, Hazrat Sultan BaHU, Sanai, Baba Farid and so many other Sufi Faqir lovers of the Beloved, viewing them as being Saints of the highest order. Hear verses of Hakim Sanai on meditating the Mysteries of Creation, connecting with the Subtle Realms of dimensions beyond in what can be called Inner Space, the Kingdom of God within. I focus upon the Inner Sound Mysticism of some of the great Sufi Saints of the ages: Rumi, Fakhruddin ‘Iraqi, Shah Niaz, Hazrat Sultan BaHU, Hazrat Inayat Khan, and Dara Shikoh. An exploration of the vegan verses of Rumi is presented. There is an essay on how mystical schools of spirituality are very fragile and short-lived in this world of illusion, this realm of Samsara, the World of Changes, how usually there are typically only a few generations of living masters and then, after the passing of the last master, a mystic path or branch of a school of spirituality fades from the scene, unless of course it gets hijacked and repurposed, turned into another world religion with a very different focus (zombification). When the latter happens, often the earlier teachings and sacred texts undergo serious edits. What had been a shared knowledge about Inner Sound and Light meditation practices, vegetarian ethics and other key principles might even be reclassified as "apocryphal" or "extra canonical". Although there is an oppressive history of lost teachings of the Sound Current (The Lost Chord), that there are no permanent universities of mysticism on planet Earth, no surviving Pythagorean, or Valentinian gnostic schools of wisdom still with us with roots in antiquity, or a church of the Ebionites with copies of Sayings Gospel Q or the Gospel of the Hebrews, a hopeful message is presented that Life Always Begets New Life. As old mystic paths and sangats fade into the oblivion of time (Kal) they are replaced with new living schools of spirituality -- that it's always been this way. Seneca the Stoic: "Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end." There are also readings from Dr. Jagessar Das,  the Sar Bachan Radhaswami Prose Book One (Huzur Maharaj Rai Saligram), Sar Bachan Radhaswami Poetry Volume One (Swami Ji Maharaj), Prem Bani Radhasoami Volume One (Hazur Maharaj Rai Saligram), Tukarama, Russell Perkins (The Stranger of Galilee), and Baba Ram Singh. We conclude with the mystic poetry of Baba Farid the Sufi. Many of his mystic poetry verses are to be found in the Sikh Scriptures, also known as the Adi Granth. Also, Nader Sanai, MD (Chief Scientific Officer/Director Neurosurgical Oncologist, Ivy Brain Tumor Center), discusses the challenges facing brain cancer research and treatment and efforts to find a cure. Those with a brain cancer diagnosis quickly run out of options. Survival rates haven't risen in decades, and a new FDA-approved therapy hasn't been introduced in as long. Brain cancer has long been underfunded, compared with other cancers and relative to the number of new cases, deaths, and years of life lost. To answer this unmet need, Dr. Sanai has pioneered a phase 0 clinical trial approach for research and drug development. "Attar was the soul, Sanai the two eyes. We walk the road of Sanai and Attar.” In saying this, Rumi acknowledged Hakim Sanai and Attar as his two primary inspirations. Hakim Sanai was a Court poet serving the Sultan Mahmud of Ghazni. When the Sultan decided to attack India, he invited Sanai to join him and write about it. As they left, passing by a walled garden they were mesmerized by the music that came from the other side of the wall. They entered the garden to find Lai Khur, who was known as a mad mystic man. While telling this story, Vasant Swaha mentions not only Hakim Sanai's satori (a sudden state of consciousness) but also brings to light Meher Baba, who experienced a satori as a child when kissed on the forehead by an enlightened woman.Enlightened Master Vasant Swaha shares his love, joy, and wisdom in retreats held in Brazil and in Norway. This is an excerpt from a Satsang given in Mevlana Garden, Brazil.

It's basically another name for body work, or connecting with the body's sensations and resources to heal trauma stuck in the body so it can release through your neural network. This may include therapies with a specialist who does body work with you to release trauma or heal the effects of trauma. Part II discusses co-regulation with a therapist, body therapies you can do with a specialist, and breakthrough treatments in trauma recovery that are still in their experimental phases like micro dosing under a special doctor's care, and utilizing new devices for healing trauma. *****THE STORE IS OPEN: https://app.podia.com/products/a-c-o-r-n-meditation-bundleBreakdown of Episode1:45 Introduction and Disclaimer 5:02 The Store is Open!5:54 Intro to the Therapies11:37 Co-Regulation With a Therapist21:19 Chiropractic (Atlas Orthogonal)33:25 Cranial Somatic and Cranial Sacral Therapy37:39 Massage45:18 Acupuncture48:24 Disclaimer on Chemical Substances and Ketamine30:41 Micro-dosing Using Psychedelics103:18 TMS--Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation107:45 VNS--Vagal Nerve StimulationBulleted List of ResourcesConnection and Co-Regulation in Psychotherapy by Arielle Schwartz in Center for Resilience Informed Therapy is the resource used to discuss co-regulation with a therapist.Improvement in Depression Following Reduction of Upper Cervical Subluxation Using Osteospinology Technique by Glenndon Genther, Harris Friedman, and Charles Studley and Chiropractic Adjustment by by the Mayo Clinic are the resources used to discuss the benefits of chiropractic treatment in healing depression and PTSD.-PTSD Could be Treated with Cranialsacral Therapy According to a Research Study in News Medical Life Sciences and Cranial Sacral Therapy in Healthline by Anna Gotter are the sources used to discuss how cranial sacral therapy can help release trauma from the body. Mind-Body-Spirit Interventions for Patients with PTSD by Leslie Corn, PhD, MPH in Psychiatric Times is the source used to explain how mind-body-spirit practices in general, including massage therapy and acupuncture can be used to relieve stress, depression, chronic illness and the symptoms of PTSD.Ketamine as a Rapid Treatment for PTSD by Dennis Charney at Mt. Excerpt from Satsang in Dharma Mountain, Norway, 12.09.29.This series is a selection of audios from Satsangs with Vasant Swaha, where he talks about the eternal truth through the beauty and depth of the Sufi tradition. The beautiful stories told here take us on a journey into a time of kings and sultans of the East, while containing timeless wisdom which continue to be applicable in our lives today.Hafiz, Rumi, Attar, Hakim Senai, Bahhaudin, Abdulalim of Fez and Khalid; these are some of the great Sufi mystics Swaha introduces us to in these audios, which are meant to be listened to with an open heart, so that we may be uplifted to the realm where these enlightened beings dwell. The message of the Master is simple, down to earth, and directed straight to the heart of those who are open and available to be elevated by Love itself.“If you are not one with the Beloved, seek. And if you are in union, rejoice.” Rumi.

A reading of Sanai's beautiful and profound, The Walled Garden of Truth. Born in Ghazni in the south of Afghanistan sometime during the eleventh century, Sanai is considered one of the most influential early mystics from the Persian region. Despite his strong influence not much is known about his life and much is gleaned from his poetry which is often autobiographical. His name is generally spoken of in the same breath as Shaikh Faridu'd-Din ‘Attar, both of whom are have been a major influence on those mystics and poets who followed in their tradition. Rumi acknowledged Hakim Sanai and Attar as his two primary inspirations, saying, “Attar is the soul and Sanai its two eyes, I came after Sanai and Attar.”

God is not someone to be underestimated or treated lightly. The reality of some of the most pitiful things in this Creation being out of our control or against us can terrify us to our core, yet the being above and beyond the universe itself is treated like a house pet. In order to properly understand and appreciate the mercy God has shown us by coming to redeem us as a man, we first need to recognize just how serious it is to be in the presence of a Holy God. God is good, but we are bad. If we aren't shown mercy, we're toast. The good news is that we don't have to be. While most reject Him and prefer themselves, those who know Jesus have recognized just how amazing God really is and has been to us. 1. The fact that God is holy is as much a comforting one as it is a scary one. 2. God isn't tame or in our control. 3. The reality of this world coming to an end is only a comfort if you understand the One who made it will redeem us from it. 4. The people who go to Hell want it. They would rather suffer separation from everything good than be in the presence of a Holy God.

#Attar #AsambleaDeLasAves #PsicologíaEspiritual منطق الطیر

Jesus Calls Twelve Ordinary Men Luke 6:12-19 Exegetical Main Point: Jesus called and trained twelve Apostles to spread his Kingdom in the world. The calling of these new leaders is a judgment on Israel and the creation of a new people of God. Sermon Main Point: Jesus called twelve ordinary men upon which he would build his church. Intro Do you ever struggle to believe that God could use someone like you? I do, quite often. In fact, I’m seeing more clearly that not just a few of us, but many, have a hard time believing that God could use us. Our lives our too messy. We believe that God only calls the qualified, those with good pasts, the ones who seem to have it all together. Sure, God saving us is one thing, but using us as effective evangelists, leaders, or for any other noteworthy kingdom building activity is another thing. If you feel unqualified, you’re in good company, and God has good news for you. Today’s passage shows us that the Kingdom of God is much different than the kingdom of this world. Jesus’s kingdom building strategy is rather surprising. He didn’t choose who you would expect to be his leaders, he called twelve very ordinary men. My prayer today is that you will see and believe in the God who makes the most unworthy sinners into beautiful and incredibly important in his kingdom. Let’s get into the text. Verse 12: 12 In these days he went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God. The first three words, “in these days”, call us to consider the context. Jesus’s influence was growing. Everywhere he went he preached powerfully and power for healing came from him. The Messiah had come to release Israel’s burdens and bring them into his rest. But the religious leaders were too distracted by their own influence and power to see that the Kingdom of God had dawned on them in Jesus. Instead, they wanted Jesus dead and they conspired his murder together. The pressures of ministry were building. How did Jesus respond? Look again at verse 12. Prayer First, Jesus got alone and prayed…all night. Before doing anything, he spent time with his Father. He did the thing that seems so unnatural to us, the thing that often feels like you are doing nothing at all. He didn’t worry. He didn’t sin out of anger at those who were rejecting him. He put his faith in God and talked to him. Prayer is nothing more than a conversation with God. God started the conversation by speaking to us first through his word, and now we make our requests known to him because he welcomes it. Notice that Jesus went out to a mountain. Jesus got alone. He found a place where he could get away from the craziness of life, ministry, and worries, like some of us need to do today, and sought God for direction. Jesus prayed all night. He didn’t whisper a five second prayer in this moment of need, though I’m sure he also did that regularly. He didn’t give up when he got tired, bored, or felt like God wasn’t listening. No, he waited on God. What about you? Think about the last big decision you had to make, the last time you were under pressure. Moving? A relationship? Job? Something that would significantly affect your time and money. How long did you wait on God in prayer? Pause. I’m not good at this. In fact, I don’t think people in our circles are very good at this. Some of us don’t know how to pray for more than five minutes, let alone all night! We want the quick fix, check the box and move forward kind of prayer life. But Jesus models for us a relationship with God that wrestles and waits and deliberates with God over hard decisions.[1] As you’ll see, God’s plans are not always in line with what would make most sense to us in this world. His wisdom is different than man’s wisdom. For this reason, we must seek him and wait on him in prayer. Some of us go to the opposite extreme and we are crippled by hard decisions. Some of us simply need to get up and do something. But I think, for the majority of us, we could grow in sitting with God, with his Word open in front of us, letting him guide our thoughts and decisions about important things. Do not overlook this, friends. Jesus’s kingdom strategy was always birthed out of a place of communion with his Father in prayer. In fact, Jesus tells his disciples that he only did what he saw his Father doing” (Jn 5:19). We must follow our master in this way. We must not be a prayerless church who makes our own strategy while never approaching our master for direction. The Apostles Let’s look at verse 13: “When day came, he called his disciples and chose from them twelve, whom he named apostles.” Jesus didn’t go to bed after staying up all night. He had plans from God to fulfill. It is implied here that Jesus received direction from God in this night of prayer who he would appoint as apostles. Jesus evidently had many disciples following him at this point and on this day he called them all together and chose from them twelve. Can you imagine having your name called that day. Everyone standing together and Jesus calling out one after another up to twelve. Jesus wanted these particular men near him. These men would be Jesus’s closest friends, those with whom he would share his last meal; he would wash their feet. He would even be betrayed by one of them. And he named them Apostles. What does it mean that Jesus “named” them Apostles? This word Apostle simply means “one who is sent”. There are others in Scripture who are called apostles but this group was unique, and everybody knew it. They are an exclusive group referred to as “the Twelve” in the rest of the Scriptures. Jesus had a particular purpose and mission in mind for these men. These twelve, in fact, would be the foundation of the church (Eph 2:20). They would witness Jesus’s life, death, and resurrection and instruct the church in all that they had seen and been taught. Judgment on Israel Why twelve? Do you remember where else this number shows up in Scripture? Just as there were twelve tribes in Israel, Jesus appointed twelve apostles. Even as Moses came down from Mt. Sanai to the newly rescued twelve Tribes of Israel, a brand new people of God at that point in history, Jesus comes down off of a mountain and selects his twelve Apostles, showing that he is beginning the process of creating a new people of God yet again. Jesus’ choice of twelvewas a deliberate move with a deliberate message. This act was, in part, a judgment on Israel, who had long been unfaithful to God in their purpose of multiplying and spreading his name and kingdom over all the earth. So, God was doing something new. The Kingdom would no longer spread through the expansion of Israel’s borders or through access to the temple. People would no longer belong to God on the basis of their ethnic identity or adherence to the Law, but rather on the basis of their relationship with Jesus. Through him they would live faithful lives. I will unpack this more later in this sermon. In fact, Luke hints at this in verse 17 where the crowds were made up of both Jews from Judea and Jerusalem and Gentilesfrom Tyre and Sidon. This New Covenant people would be made up of both Jew and Gentile. In calling the twelve Jesus was showing that he was creating a New Covenant people of God through Jesus, a people who would spread his kingdom over all the earth. The Team: Now let’s discuss what men Jesus chose to found this new people. They were probably highly skilled and successful people right? Let’s look at verse 14 and meet the team. I will highlight a few of them. There’s little known about this group of men, but of all of them Simon Peter the Galilean fisherman, whom Luke has already introduced to us in chapter 5 is most well-known. In every list of the twelve Peter is mentioned first as he seems to be a first among equals on this team. Andrew was Peter’s brother. James and John were also fishermen and perhaps business partners with Peter and would make up Jesus’s inner circle along with Peter. Matthew, who was also called Levi, is the tax collector we read about in the last chapter. He would end up writing the Gospel of Matthew. Thomas, who is called “the twin” is best known for being the doubter of Jesus’ resurrection. Sad to be caught with that reputation! Simon the zealot was a part of a revolutionary group that hated the Romans and looked for opportunities to murder and overthrow them. He and “Judas the son of James” who is also called Thaddeus in other lists is mentioned just four times.[2] Judas Iscariot, apparently the only one from outside of Galilee, finishes every list because of the fact that he is known as the traitor who betrayed Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. What do these men have in common? At least two things: 1) They are incredibly ordinary men and 2) they have very little in common. They aren’t who you’d expect God to choose as the core leaders of his church. This was a weird bunch, an extremely ordinary bunch. Not the priests. Not the politicians. Not the famous. Fishermen and tax collectors! This was a bold move! It was downright dangerous to have Matthew, the tax collector, who worked for the Romans anywhere near Simon the zealot. I wonder if Jesus often caught the two eyeing each other suspiciously. You’ve got blue-collar fishermen, a city boy, married guys with kids along with young singles. What was Jesus thinking?!Jesus wanted to start a new team and change the world and this was the team he picked? Jesus had a short time to train them and then he would be killed. There was no plan b, guys. Everything rested on these guys! Ultimately, the one thing that brought this rag tag bunch together was Jesus, the one who transforms lowly sinners and big mouths like Peter, into Apostles who would be used to write Scripture, establish the church, and turn the world upside down! Don’t you see? This is our humble beginning, a foretaste of what the Church would be like, a complicated mess of people who would be empowered by God’s Spirit to change the world. This would be a church made up of All Peoples. All Peoples Church. Training So Jesus had his team. Now what is the first step Jesus takes in preparing these men for their work? Verse 17: 17And he came down with them and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, 18 who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. And those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. 19 And all the crowd sought to touch him, for power came out from him and healed them all. We’re told that after Jesus called the twelve he came down “with them” and immediately began ministering to the crowds. Notice the words “with them”. Jesus brought the twelve along in his ministry. This, friends, is discipleship. Jesus had the twelve “with him” so that he could demonstrate the kingdom through miracle working and to teach what the kingdom was like. Jesus didn’t buy a building and invite the twelve to come on Sunday’s at 5pm each week for a lesson. No, he brought them out into real life ministry and let them see how it works. Jesus spent nearly every waking moment with these men, equipping, empowering, and sending them to do what he did and teach what he taught. But this was only the beginning of the training. They would not be spectators for long as Jesus would soon give the same authority to these men to heal, cast out demons, and proclaim the kingdom. In Acts, Luke even describes the Apostles as having the same sort of power coming out from them for healing! This is why we believe and teach that discipleship is best done in the context of everyday life where we can be with each other and see the gospel incarnate into the everyday stuff of life. Jesus shows us that discipleship is better caught than merely taught. This is Jesus’s idea of disciple-making, and it lasted for three short years until his death. And it would continue by the Spirit after he ascended. God’s strategy is not like ours. In the incarnation, he became an ordinary man so that he could call ordinary men to watch him and see him live. He didn’t try to convert the world powers. He chose to raise up a small group of ordinary men to train and send as his messengers. This is where you and me fit in. The Church This was our start, church. It begins here. We exist today as a church through the Apostle’s Spirit-empowered witness. The Gospel has come down from one generation to the next through other faithful disciple-makers. And we who are trusting Jesus are the people of God! We’re a weird bunch like the Apostles, made up of sinners from every background, ethnicity, and social class, but transformed by the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Most of us are not the elite of society, the rich, or powerful, but God has chosen us and filled us with his Holy Spirit for the cause of his kingdom advancement on earth. Don’t you see? God loves to call the ordinary to do his work. Why? Because it shows off his glory! When God uses ordinary people to transform the world, there is no confusion about who gets the credit for it. The Apostle Paul calls God the one who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist (Rom 4:17). There’s no boasting if you were dead and someone made you alive is there? You may be ordinary, even unqualified, but in Christ and by the Holy Spirit, you have become an indispensable part of the team. Man looks at outward appearances. But God is not partial and will use anyone who puts their faith in him. I hope you’re not still wondering if he wants to use you. Now So how should we live if this is who we are? Know your place and rejoice in it.God doesn’t make mistakes. God chooses particular people and leaders in particular times and places for the advance of his kingdom. Some of you are going to be like Peter who was a well-known prominent leader, and some of you will be like Bartholomew who was mentioned only once in Scripture but historically went on to accomplish great things for God. If you are named in the Lamb’s book of life, you have a reason to rejoice! Pray and pick a team to train up. Before Jesus ascended, he spoke the mission statement of the church, in which is given the chief command, to make disciples. This is Jesus’s strategy! If you want to change the world, replicate Christ by calling and training others to go and do the same. Jesus came down “with them”. He modeled the kingdom for them. In our circles we think discipleship means 1) giving a book for someone to read 2) or just talking it out. There’s a lot of information dumping. But the reality is most people don’t learn like that. Most people through history learned through apprenticeship. They watched someone model for them how to live and work and play and rest. Yes, books are helpful. Yes, talking will be weaved throughout the process, but we need to rethink our discipleship strategy based on Jesus’ model. We need to showour disciples how to fight, forgive, and reconcile. We need to showour disciples how to share the Gospel, how to pray, how to study and apply the Bible. We need to have people live with us, have people in our homes and around us so that we can show others how to rejoice in victories and take big hits. I want to challenge you this week to consider who God is calling you to disciple? I want each of you to spend some time in prayer this week and let God show you who you could walk with in this kind of way. Consider journaling out what God is showing you and share it with your DNA groups so that they can help you be faithful to what God is calling you to. Who has God given you a voice in their life? Speaking of DNA’s, this is the perfect place to put this in action. In fact, this is the whole purpose of that ministry structure! We’re trying to replicate Jesus’s model in our context. Perhaps there are a few in your Missional Community who you could invite into more of what you are doing, that you could spend more time in prayer and word together. How about outside of the church? Are their neighbors or co-workers who you have influence over? Maybe it’s time to invite them into your life in a new way for discipleship. If you don’t know who to disciple, find someone who knows just a little less about the Bible than you do and just ask them to spend some time with you. But discipleship doesn’t stop there. Not only are you called to make disciples. You are a disciple! Who in the church do you know that lives out the kingdom? Follow them. Don’t make this weird. But simply look for ways to get around these individuals and ask a lot of good questions. Let them model it for you – even if that’s over zoom! Are you taking seriously Jesus’s call to make disciples? Let’s realign our strategy with Jesus’s strategy. It seems to have been effective. This is God’s plan to transform the world. There is no plan b. He chose to change the world through ordinary men and women who train up other ordinary men and women to follow Jesus in the same way. Follow him. Maybe you’re not yet a disciple of Jesus. In the same way Jesus called these men to come and follow him, Jesus is calling you today to come follow him, to lay down your old life and find new life in him. On the cross Jesus paid the way for you to be his and to join his team. He rose from death proving that his team will be victorious, so you must repent so that you won’t have to die and face his judgment for rebelling against his kingdom. Every sinner who calls on Jesus gets to join the team as an essential member. Lay down your doubts and fears about your inadequacies and let him define your value and purpose. AMEN, a customary statement at the end of a prayer or during preaching to express agreement with what is said. But, AMEN is much so much more than that… AMEN Is:My Declaration: I Agree With What God Says.My Expectation: I Anticipate His Word Will Come To Pass.My Participation: I Will Do My Part So He Can Do His. Ezekiel 37:1,4-7 (ESV) The hand of the Lord was upon me, and he brought me out in the Spirit of the Lord and set me down in the middle of the valley; it was full of bones. Then he said to me, “Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. Thus says the Lord God to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. And I will lay sinews upon you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live, and you shall know that I am the Lord.” Ezekiel 37:7 (ESV) So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I prophesied…Mountains are the highest places on earth. In the Bible, they are symbolic of strength, accomplishment and victory. They are iconic places where God met with man, as was the case for Moses on Mt. Sanai or Elijah on Mount Carmel. Mount Zion is symbolic of God’s dwelling place with His chosen people, Israel, and specifically the location of the temple in Jerusalem.Psalm 48:1–3 (ESV) Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised in the city of our God! His holy mountain, beautiful in elevation, is the joy of all the earth, Mount Zion, in the far north, the city of the great King. Within her citadels God has made himself known as a fortress. One of the iconic New Testament mountains was the Mount of TransfigurationMatthew 17:1–3 (ESV) And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. Valleys are the low places on earth. In the Bible, they are symbolic of waiting, difficulty, battle and even death. These are times and places where God is often seen as absent. Psalm 23:4 (ESV) Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort meOne of the most iconic Bible Valleys was The Valley of Hinnom:During the reign of King Ahaz - (2 Chronicles 28, 33) the valley was used by Baal worshipers to offer their children in their furnaces to their god Molech.During the time of Jeremiah - (Jeremiah 7, 19) referred to the valley as "The Valley of Slaughter."During reign of King Josiah - (2 Kings 23:10) proclaimed "defiled" and no one was allowed to use it for any purpose.During ministry of Jesus - valley evolved into a garbage dump. Trash was burned around the clock, as well as the bodies of dead animals, criminal corpses. It was a well-known hangout for lepers and the sick. There was continual smoke, stench, maggots and flies. At night, dogs could be heard fighting over the trash. Eleven out of twelve times that Jesus talked about HELL, He used the Greek word "GAHENNA." "GAHENNA" comes from the Old Testament word, "HINNOM" which was a valley south of Jerusalem.Ezekiel 37:1–2 (ESV) The hand of the Lord was upon me, and he brought me out in the Spirit of the Lord and set me down in the middle of the valley; it was full of bones. And he led me around among them, and behold, there were very many on the surface of the valley, and behold, they were very dry. hand of the Lord was on Himbrought into the middle of a valleyby the Spirit of the Lordnot just a valley, it was full of bones, many bones! Dry bones!Ezekiel 37:3 (ESV) And he said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” you can end up in a Valley filled with many dry bones as a result of:life happensthe enemies attackyour own actions – ignorance, stupidity, foolish, sin, rebellionthe leading of the Holy SpiritHowever you got there, the question now is “Can these bones live?”The answer: YESEzekiel 37:4 (ESV) Then he said to me, “Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. At this moment we often make several mistakes with our lipsmurmur, grumble Exodus 15:23–24 (ESV) When they came to Marah, they could not drink the water of Marah because it was bitter; therefore it was named Marah. And the people grumbled against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?” Exodus 16:8 (ESV) And Moses said… Your grumbling is not against us but against the Lord.” become victims: place blame, unforgiving, bitter, excuses, fear-filled verbiage, negativewear it as your identity: everything in life becomes about thisbecome coroners – time and cause of death –faithlessNone of those mistakes brings about God’s desire – LIFE!!!You have to understand, words create our lives, our atmosphereswe live in them those around us live inthe Holy Spirit has to live in - Ephesians 4:29–32 (ESV) Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. Your atmosphere is the incubator for the futureWhat should you do? Prophesy over the bones…The bones are real, don’t act like they are notProphesy: declare out loud for you/others/heaven/hell to HEAR!Prophesy is not a suggestion; it is a declaration. It is authoritative: Heaven has called you to prophesy! God could come down and do it, but he’s sent you!Prophesy: what God says – general things from the Word, things that you sense, things God has revealedEzekiel 37:5–6 (ESV) Thus says the Lord God to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. And I will lay sinews upon you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live, and you shall know that I am the Lord.” There is and order and timing - You don’t get skin before you get flesh. You don’t stand to walk around before tendons are attached. The Word gets the ball rollingIt’s important to understand that you might have work to do“were just believing God for our finances“were just believing God for our marriage“were just believing God for our healthgreat, but what are you doing?Prophesy again, and again, and again!Valleys created by Hell will fight back!!! Prophetic warfare – bind and loose. Pray in the Spirit!!!!Of course, the prophesy is fulfilled, and the outcome is an amazing army!Holy Spirit, Transform Our Words!AMEN is a lifestyle of prophesying. It’s not going to come easily or quickly. taming the tongue is nearly impossible - James 3:6–8 (ESV) And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell. For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. but it is a reality of the Holy Spirit - Joel 2:28–29 (ESV) “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy…

Today's Rapid Response Friday tackles (1) Paul Manafort's plea deal and (2) the surprise resumption of the Senate Judiciary confirmation hearings for Supreme Court Associate Justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh in light of Dr. Ford's allegations, which are discussed in depth on Episode 158 of Serious Inquiries Only.  What should you look for during Monday's hearings?  Listen and find out! We begin with an acknowledgment of the story sent to us by several hundred thousand listeners regarding crazy person Cody Wilson. After that, it's time for an important Andrew Was Wrong:  Paul Manafort did not plea over the weekend; he pled guilty pretty much the second we stopped recording!  We break down everything there is to know about his deal, including the strong incentives Manafort has not only to cooperate but to roll over and expose his belly to Mueller's team in hopes of being thrown a bone or two.  Oh, and we time-travel back to the 19th century to answer a super-interesting listener question on asset forfeiture! Then, it's time to discuss Kavanaugh again, in light of the troubling accusations made by Dr. Ford and other issues, including the Democratic Senators's FOIA lawsuit compelling the production of Kavanaugh's documents that are being withheld while the Republicans try and cram through his nomination.  It's not a pretty segment, but we think you'll walk away equipped to understand Monday's hearings. After all that, we end with an all new Thomas Takes The Bar Exam #94 regarding Congressional delegation of rule-making authority.  Will Thomas get back on track with just one extra wrong answer to give in the next six questions?  Yu'll have to listen and find out!  And, of course, if you'd like to play along with us, just retweet our episode on Twitter or share it on Facebook along with your guess and the #TTTBE hashtag.  We'll release the answer on next Tuesday's episode along with our favorite entry! Appearances Andrew will be debating originalist (and Kavanaugh clerk!) Justin Reed Wilson in Louisville, Kentucky on September 27; click here for the Facebook RSVP link if you'd like to attend! Show Notes & Links For an in-depth analysis of Dr. Ford's allegations against Kavanaugh, listen to Episode 158 of Serious Inquiries Only. You should really read through Mr. Ostrich-Jacket's plea deal for yourself.  (And yes, that's the show graphic.)  This is the TPM article Andrew criticizes; as you'll see from the Sentencing Table, Manafort faces 210-262 (or more) months in prison. FOUNDATIONAL FRAMEWORK. PART 44 Foundational Truths: The Bible is God’s self-revelation. God is the Eternal, Sovereign Creator; all that He creates is good. Man is a responsible agent, held to a moral standard. Sin originates within a person, separating us from God. God declares one righteous by faith alone, apart from works. The glory of God is the centerpiece and goal of all existence. God’s glory is maximally realized in the promised, coming Kingdom. The Word, the Life, and the Light are all used to capture the essence and significance of God’s reintroduction into the world in a manifested form. “The Word” speaks to both Jews and Greeks and their philosophical understandings regarding life, existence, order, and rational thought. “The Life” is eternal life, always existing within the Trinity before time began. “The Light” brings attention to Truth in a world that is saturated with darkness. It is the Source to which John the Baptist testified about in his ministry. The purpose of his testimony is “that all might believe through him” (John 1:7). Not only is the Life the Light of men (John 1:4) thus enlightening men, but the word spoken by John was to point men to the Light (See also Acts 19:1-4). Borchert writes, “the point is that the testimony and the enlightenment were intended for all.” John 1:10-13. John 1:10 is a startling truth. Notice that there are three uses of the word “world” but two meanings are meant among the three uses. The first two uses speak of the created existence of Earth while the third usage points to the people of the Earth. The Word/Light was in the world, and even made the world, and yet the world (the people) did not know (receive) Him. Hart provides clarity writing, “The ‘world’ is in need of forgiveness (1:29), a Savior (4:42), and eternal life (6:33; 8:12). It hates God (17:25) and Jesus (7:7) as well as believers (15:18, 19), and is ruled by Satan (14:30; 16:11). While believers are in the physical world (13:1; 17:11), they are separated out of the evil world system by their faith in Christ (17:6, 17).” We understand this as the world not wanting God but desperately needing God. Whereas, ironically, God does not need the world, but He wants the world, and so much so that the Word was sent to give Life to the world, to all who would “receive” Him (John 1:11b). The statement of John 1:11 is an extension of the remark made in 1:10 and a heartbreaking summary of the Jewish response to their long-awaited and divinely-promised Messiah. The Jews “did not receive Him” as the One that was promised to deliver them, though they were chosen by Him as His people and given maximum revelation in order to recognize Him (Rom 9:1-5). It has been noted in various lectures by Earl Radmacher that Matthew 1-4 and 8-12 expound in detail upon what is stated in this one verse in John, namely the Jews’ rejection of Jesus. However, verse 12 gives hope. Not everyone rejected Christ. The fact of the Jews’ rejection of Him is tragic because of the heightened degree of revelation that YHWH had given to them as seen in the Old Testament. The use of the word “receive” in 1:11b and 1:12a are explained by John’s comments as “believe on His name” (John 1:12b). From the very beginning, John is clear: to receive Jesus is to believe in Jesus. Nothing else is added or required. The use of “believe” in 1:12 should draw our attention back to John’s purpose in testifying about the Light in John 1:7. The noted benefit of “receiving/believing” in Jesus is the “right to become children of God” (1:12b). The word for “right” is exousia which means “power, authority,” and is understood by Louw & Nida as “the power to do something, with or without an added implication of authority.” This is a blessed and privileged position given by the gracious provision of God. Those who believe are considered God’s children, fully accepted and cared for just as any child on Earth should be accepted and cared for, having full rights in their earthly family. The concept of “adoption” for YHWH is not one that accepts those who believe as second-class offspring, or as illegitimate mouths to feed, but as fully embraced and validated kids, legitimate in every way, lacking no privilege or blessing. This is our first exposure to the majesty of the riches that are found “in Christ,” that are distributed freely based on no merit required of the person believing. It is the first of many blessings already blessed to us (Eph 1:3-14). With John 1:13 we see the first notion that the “receiving/believing” concept in 1:11-12 results in something else, namely that the person believing is “born” in some way, with this being the first of six uses referring to the spiritual birth of a person who believes in Christ (John 3:3, 5, 6 [x2], 7, 8, all being used in the conversation that Jesus has with Nicodemus). The order of the events involved is clear from the text. When one believes/receives Christ, they are then “born” (which we later understand as being “born from above/ born again”) and become children of God. This is an order that is consistent with what is seen in Ephesians 1:13 as well. This “birth” is from God (John 1:13d), as it should be, for He is the only One that can impart Life. However, John clarifies for us three means by which this “birth” do not take place. First, one is not born again by “blood,” meaning that it is not a matter of human decent or heritage. Just because your mother is born again does not mean that you are born again. Secondly, this “birth” is not of the will of the flesh, which is not of human desire or effort, and when compared with Jesus’ comments about being “born again” in John 3:6, we would also conclude that this “birth” is not the result of copulation. Finally, this “birth” is not “of the will of man,” which seems to have aroused various viewpoints from many commentators. The most plausible understanding is that this “birth” is not of the husband’s will, seeing that it was the husband who made the decision about having children in the first century. Such a decision to set the course for the family has no bearing on how one is born again regarding God. One birth is of the flesh, but the birth from God is of the Spirit (John 3:6) John 1:14-18. The incarnation of the Word finds God stepping into a particular point in history to accomplish a divine purpose. Truth takes on skin and “tabernacles” among us. The idea of God taking on flesh finds its roots in the very creation of the first man and woman, being design in the image and likeness of God, designing them as He saw fit (Gen 1:26-28). This decision in time carried great implications knowing that one day the Lord Jesus Christ would inhabit an encasement of the same. Jesus does not “just appear” on the scene of the first century but chooses to be born and raised among a culture of Jewish makings, learning, growing, and lives among the people (Heb 5:8). The idea that God could take on flesh and not have His “Godhood” diminished has been a debate among theological minds for centuries. This is what is known as the Hypostatic Union of Christ where Jesus stands as 100% Deity and 100% Humanity without one compromising the other, nor eclipsing the other. Jesus is both fully God and fully man in one entity. Such a pairing is essential for the sake of accomplishing a complete redemption. Enns notes this necessity stating, “As a man, Christ could represent man and die as a man; as God the death of Christ could have infinite value ‘sufficient to provide redemption for the sins of the world.’” The “glory” spoken of in 1:14 has been expounded upon previously and should not be considered anything other than the same type of glory that has been revealed in the Old Testament in the presence of the Shekinah Glory of YHWH on numerous occasions. However, the point here is that John writes of being an eyewitness to this glory, being the glory “as of the only begotten from the Father” (John 1:14b). This is a statement referring to the event known as the Transfiguration found in Matthew 17:1-8; Mark 9:2-8; and Luke 9:28-36, of which Peter seems to relate the same event in 2 Peter 1:17-18. The use of the phrase “only begotten” does not imply that Jesus was born in some way previous to the incarnation but deals with the uniqueness of Jesus. The Greek word used is monogenous and means “that Jesus is the Son of God in a sense totally different from a human who believes and becomes a child of God. Jesus’ sonship is unique for He is eternal and is of the same essence as the Father.” What makes Jesus so unique for John (or at least he felt that this elaboration needed to be mentioned within the same immediate context as His glory being reveled), was the fact that He is also full of grace and truth. Jesus perfectly represents the Father, showing His “hesed,” lovingkindness and compassion to the undeserving while also holding perfectly to the standard of righteousness being completely consistent with God’s revelation. The Word does not just encompass Life and Light, but Grace and Truth, and does so perfectly! John the Apostle states that John the Baptist testified of Jesus regarding His superiority and His eternality (John 1:15). Whatever large crowds or ranking officials that attended Jesus’ meetings, and however grand John’s meetings in the desert were considered among the people, Jesus was greater; far greater than any could imagine, and of a greatness that John struggled to communicate to those who came to hear him and be baptized by him (Matt 3:5-7; Mark 1:5; Luke 3:7; John 1:19). John the Baptist also understood something about the eternality of Jesus, but it must be admitted by any credible student of the Scriptures that this is not something that is easily understood. John the Baptist was unique, seeing that he was “filled with the Holy Spirit” while in his mother’s womb (Luke 1:15). This could be speaking of John’s response to Mary’s arrival in visiting his mother Elizabeth (Luke 1:41), but the text specifies that it was Elizabeth who was filled with the Holy Spirit, with the text also specifying that John, being in Elizabeth’s womb, leaped for joy (Luke 1:44), and did not leap from the filling of the Holy Spirit. It would seem that the Holy Spirit filled John while in the womb and imparted to him the revelation necessary to serve as the prophesied forerunner of the Messiah (Luke 1:17). John 1:16 seems to be a commentary provided by the Apostle John and not a continuation of the statement made by John the Baptist, which is something that is characteristic of John’s writing throughout his Gospel (John 2:17; 4:9b; 5:18; 7:39; 8:6, 27; 9:22; 10:6; 11:13, 18, 51, 52; 12:6, 16, 33, 41; 13:11). The word “fullness” in 1:16 is the word plerōma which is only used by John this one time in his Gospel and carries the meaning of being filled up or having an abundance. The use of the word “all” in this verse serves as a qualifier for how it should be interpreted. In stating that “all have received His fullness,” we are sure that this does not include those who rejected Him, who did not receive/believe in Him (John 1:11), but of those who “believe in His name” (John 1:12b). Every believer in Christ has Him fully (Col 3:3). Not one Christian lacks in their union with Christ. We have “every spiritual blessing” simply by being “in Christ” (Eph 1:3). The use of “grace upon grace” in 1:16b is the continual heaping of grace upon the already complete blessings of the believer. It is not just that the believer in Christ is given an initial and unwavering dose of grace in the blessings that come with being in Christ, but grace continues to be poured upon the believer for his or her continual receiving. Hart describes it as “maximized grace, or one gracious gift upon another.” There is nothing lacking for those who believe, who are in the Lord Jesus! In John 1:17, the contrast between Moses and the Law and Jesus and grace and truth should not be seen as being in competition with one another, nor should one be seen as superior to the other. Such conclusions overlook the fact that the Law is the written perfection of YHWH which clearly taught the nation of Israel how to have fellowship with their Creator and Redeemer. The Law is equally the Word of God, so how could it not be truth? If we simply take Exodus 20:1-20 alone, we could not conclude that it was less than truth, for it was audibly spoken by YHWH for the hearing of the people of Israel. Exodus 20 should also not be deemed as irrelevant truth, for truth is always relevant because it is true, and the Law is still useful in dealing with those who are in sinful situations because its truth serves to establish a standard of morality and ethics (1 Tim 1:8-11). The Law has sometimes been portrayed as having no grace, when in fact the Law demonstrates grace in very practical ways. For instance, Exodus 21:2 shows remarkable grace for those who find themselves in slavery. It reads, “If you buy a Hebrew slave, he shall serve for six years; but on the seventh he shall go out as a free man without payment.” Slavery in the Old Testament is drastically different than what American history records as “slavery” in the 1700-1800s. For one to buy a slave was for one to purchase a person for manual labor. The fact that this slave was a “Hebrew” is an intentional mention to denote kinship and to foster compassion from the one who purchased the slave. There were some Hebrews who came upon hard times and had no other way to feed themselves or to support their families than by hiring themselves (and their families) out for work under another. The conditions surrounding such situations could not have been as harsh as what has been learned about the slave trade in America seeing that the one purchased could actually come to the conclusion that he loved his master (Exod 21:5) at which point the slave would then be tagged on his ear to denote permanent servitude to his master (Exod 21:6). The grace is found in the fact that a purchased person for manual labor was to only be held for six years and then the slave was to be released, being set free without any restitution due to the one who bought him (Exod 21:2b). There was no concern with making back whatever money was lost, nor is there any mention of the slave earning their way to freedom. At the seven-year mark, freedom was guaranteed! This is a command in the Law of YHWH demonstrating grace to the one who has found themselves in a difficult situation. So, what does John mean in stating that the Law came through Moses but that grace and truth came through Jesus Christ? John is simply stating a progression in the revelation of truth as dispensed by YHWH and through whom He desires to dispense it. The Law is truth and it serves as one revelation of YHWH, while Jesus Christ exemplifies the grace and truth of YHWH in a second, equally-inspired revelation as played out in the life of Christ on Earth. Stanley writes, “Whatever Jesus did, He did with grace. Whatever He said, He said in truth. He was not gracious some of the time and less gracious other times, any more than He varied in the amount of truth He spoke.” At no time was the grace and truth as given through Jesus of greater value than the Law as given through Moses. One is a progression in the revelation of the other that had been previously established on Mt. Sanai. If there is any aversion to embracing the Law of YHWH as equally-inspired truth as that of the words of the Lord Jesus, it is our lack of personal righteousness and the conviction which the Law brings against our sin that arouses such emotions. But, with a joyful heart we can say “Thanks be to God that ‘Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes’” (Rom 10:4). With John 1:18, we have a strict observation, and one that corresponds perfectly with the apostle’s statement in 4:12 of his first epistle. “No one has seen God at any time,” despite what some health and wealth prosperity preachers may have claimed. An immediate mental objection might be: “Well, isn’t Jesus Christ God in the flesh, and there were plenty of people who saw Him, right?” To this we would agree, as would the Scriptures (1 Cor 15:4-8). So, what is meant by this statement if many people had seen Jesus during His time on earth in the flesh? “God is Spirit (4:24) and is invisible (Col. 1:15, 1 Tim. 1:17) unless God chooses to reveal Himself. Humans cannot look at God and live (Ex. 33:20). Abraham, the friend of God, did not see God. Even Moses, the lawgiver, could not look at God’s face (Ex. 33:22, 23).” It is this last point that aids us in making the connection that John may have been looking for. As stated above, no one can look at God and live (Exod 33:20) and what many have seen when encountered with YHWH was not looking at His face, seeing Him in the full exposure of His glory (remember the themes that John is using in this prologue). But as we read the remainder of the verse, we find that one of the highly-unique aspects of Jesus Christ is that He explains the Father in a way that He has never been explained before. In Jesus, we are seeing something that was not completely understood through previous revelation. By stating that Jesus is “in the bosom of the Father,” John is drawing our attention to His constant, abiding relationship with the Father, experiencing maximum fellowship, intimacy, etc. We are then told that Jesus is the One who has “explained” Him (“made Him known”- ESV, NIV, RSV; “declared Him”- KJV, NKJV; “has revealed Him”- HCSB). The word used is exēgeomai which means, “to relate in detail, expound, interpret.” Thayer understands the word to mean, “to lead out, to unfold, declare.” This Greek word is where the English word “exegesis” comes from, which means “to pull the meaning out of the text of Scripture.” The meaning is “drawn out” for the sake of a better understanding. This is exactly what Jesus Christ has done through His life, words, acts, interactions, healings, and miracles. He has made the Creator more-fully known! This is the essence of progressive revelation, perfect in keeping with what the Scriptures have initially established about themselves and something that has been clearly observed from the Scriptures as part of this Foundational Framework series. The Bible, God’s Word, is God’s self-revelation. God desires to be known by His creation and the unfolding of the life of Jesus Christ brings crystalizing clarity to this goal, displaying YHWH for a better understanding among the world, so that they would respond to Him in faith. Again, Jesus Christ is everything that YHWH has ever wanted to say to the world because Jesus represents Him faithfully and completely.

FOUNDATIONAL FRAMEWORK. PART 32Foundational Truths: The Bible is God’s self-revelation.God is the Eternal, Sovereign Creator; all that He creates is good.Man is a responsible agent, held to a moral standard.Sin originates within a person, separating us from God.God declares one righteous by faith alone, apart from works.Between the death of the firstborn and the meeting with YHWH at Sanai, the Israelites were found complaining against YHWH on four separate occasions (Exod 14:11-12; 15:24; 16:2; 17:2). In each instance, we do not find any divine chastening meted out by YHWH. While He does express His exasperation with the unbelief of the people (Exod 16:28), in each instance careful instructions and provisions are given, tenderly caring for these recently-freed slaves. Having been under oppression for so long, a concept like trusting in a God who they did not have a tangible image of was an extreme contrast, to say the least. Where would their next meal come from? What would they drink? How would their clothes and sandals possibly hold up in the wilderness climate? Marching into their freedom was scary, but YHWH holds their hand, teaching them that He can be trusted. He is their Father; they are His Son (Exod 4:22).Exodus 19:1-17. Three months had passed and the Israelites had come to the mountain where YHWH had initially called Moses (Exod 3:12). The salvation/deliverance of the people initiates their relationship with YHWH, bringing them to a place where they can live in a covenant relationship with Him. This calling was unlike any among the nations.“Yahweh confirmed his work of redeeming his vassal people from the overlordship of Egypt by making them his own servants, ‘a kingdom of priests and a holy nation’ (Exod 19:6). Their role thenceforth would be to mediate or intercede as priests between the holy God and the wayward nations of the world, with the end in view not only of declaring his salvation but also of providing the human channel in and through whom this salvation would be effected.”[1]This covenant proposal is extended to the leadership of Israel who obviously confer with the people, reaching an affirmative agreement (19:4-8). What is important to note is that their agreement to the covenant is not based upon the terms of the covenant. That would not come until Exodus 20-23. The agreement of Israel in the covenant was based off of the salvation/deliverance of YHWH and the constant provision that He had for them while traveling to the Sinai/ Mount Horeb region.Having agreed to enter into the terms of this contract, YHWH calls for the people to prepare themselves for His presence: YHWH will speak with the people personally (19:9). To prepare themselves, there is a call to “consecrate” themselves, wash their garments (19:10, 14), and to abstain from sexual relations (19:15). On the third day, YHWH would meet them! While we are not told what the consecration of oneself consisted of, we do know that the ideas surrounding it are holiness and purity, especially in light of their appointment with YHWH (19:11). Washing one’s garments speaks to cleanliness, of which we can all easily understand, but consecration itself and abstaining from sex seems odd. The overall “calling out” of Israel to separate themselves from Egypt (which is a type of the world system) signifies their special relationship with YHWH. Now YHWH was preparing them for intimacy and fellowship with Him.Dispensation of the Law. The Law was never a means of salvation, for to do so would be to make salvation by works and not as it always has been, and as YHWH had previously revealed it to be, by grace through faith (Gen 15:6). Instead, “Israel was to participate in God’s mission by calling the world’s attention to God’s goodness and righteousness through their obedience (Deut 4:1-8).”[2] YHWH is a missional God and His election of Israel is not any different, seeing that He has called them to a missional task. Ideally, Israel was to walk in fellowship/obedience to the Law, for in doing so, they would be a witness, modeling the intimacy that could be experienced with YHWH. This opportunity became severely compromised when Israel made a covenant with the people whodwelled in Gibeon known as the Hivites when they had been commanded to “utterly destroy” everything (Josh 9:1-21; Deut 7:1-2).The “Type” Involved with Israel and the Exodus. The historical events recorded in Exodus are a visual lesson that teaches on the Christian life. By applying the blood of the lamb, death passes over the Israelite (Exod 12:13). This signifies the moment in which a person hears the Gospel of Jesus Christ, our Passover Lamb (1 Cor 5:7), and believes it, being rescued from death and transferred into eternal life (John 5:24). In this “newborn” period, there is a testing of boundaries, and a worldly tendency to complain and grumble regarding one’s basic needs (Exod 14:11-12; 15:24; 16:2; 17:2). As with any loving Father, the infant believer is provided and cared for by YHWH. When the instruction for righteous living comes, the opportunity for living the “abundant life” (John 10:10) begins. Israel’s reception of the Law would be a type of the Christian’s growth in discipleship, fostering a greater intimacy with the Lord our God. This comes about by keeping His commandments, which is no different for the Christian, except that the commandments that we are called to keep are not found in the Law of Moses, but in the Law of Christ, which is also known as the Law of Liberty (John 14:21; Jas 1:25; 2:12. This is also known as the “Law of our King” [literal translation of Jas 2:8]).“The Church is not Israel, and Israel is not the Church. Israel is the chosen nation. It is a race of individuals in which God has founded and advanced His kingdom program throughout its history. The Church, on the other hand, is a Body of all those who are spiritually baptized into Christ.”[3] The Law of Moses was given to govern a nation so that it would be a megaphone of His goodness and salvation for the world (Deut 4:6-8). Being that the Law is the perfect standard of God and that it clearly displays His holiness and righteousness, it is perfect in identifying sin, serving as the grounds for such a condemnation (1 Tim 1:8-11). The matter must be settled in the Christian’s mind that they have been set free from the slavery of sin and have been graciously brought into a new life where opportunities for obedience greatly surpass anything that could have been previously conceived of apart from Christ (Rom 6:1-14).Exodus 20:1-17. This passage is known as the Ten Commandments, but is more properly understood as the “Ten Words” or the “Decalogue.” The order of the Ten Words is theologically intentional.v.2-6: YHWH alone is supreme and nothing else compares to Him. He alone is unique. It is only by affirming the truths of the first 2 commands that any of the other commands can even be approached.v.7-11: YHWH is to be revered, with time being set aside for uninterrupted worship of Him.v.12: The hierarchy of the family falls right after one’s understanding of YHWH. The family is what sets the tone for the culture. This is by God’s purposeful design, with respect being in order.v.13-17: Interpersonal relationships. Being created in the image of God, each human being is significant and deserves to be treated with dignity.God reveals Himself to the Israelites in a new way, using His voice. He begins by addressing them with His name: YHWH. This is an audible event in history of which every Israelite heard Him while standing at the foot of the mountain. This personal communication from YHWH to Israel was to serve as a benchmark event when the Creator of all things personally spoke His divine Law to his firstborn son. This is recounted later as a remembrance to the Israelites in Deut 4:10-14.YHWH places the spotlight squarely on His liberating campaign against Egypt, identifying it properly as a “house of slaves” (v.1-2). The mention of His conquest against Egypt supplies the grounds for what is known as a “hesed relationship,” meaning that loyalty is expected from Israel due to the loyalty that was shown to them.A pattern that is immediately noticeable is that commandments 1-4 are concerned with Israel’s relationship with YHWH, while commandments 5-10 deal with Israel’s relationships with one another. The first commandment (v.3) deals with disarming the polytheistic mindset that had infected the Israelites from their stay in Egypt (Ezek 20:5-10). Being held captive for some time, and even though their residing in the land of Goshen did provide some sort of buffer to insulate them from total corruption, the devotion of Egypt to their idols had rubbed off on Israel (1 Cor 15:33). By ageing to be devoted to YHWH alone, Israel is immediately thrust into direct opposition to every surrounding nation and people, causing immediate tension. The second commandment is closely related (v.4-6), calling for the people to abstain from making idols that resemble created things (See Rom 1:18-23). “Idols and images in all likelihood were merely representations of invisible beings whose reality could be fully appreciated only by their being seen.”[4] To make an idol was to subscribe to another god; a demon, who was in direct opposition to the moral and ethical foundation that YHWH was communicating. (For a Scriptural take on the futility of idols, see Isaiah 40:18; 41:7; 44:9-20).YHWH calls Himself a “jealous God,” meaning that there is none greater than He and to worship lesser things, especially idols, is to settle for less than the best that is being offered to them. Some are troubled by v.5-6, assuming that the 3rd and 4th generations will be condemned for the sins of their ancestors, but this is not the meaning at all. The idea being conveyed is that those who worship idols and were not holding fast to YHWH’s Law are setting the future generations up for failure. Or, simply put, sin has consequences and repercussions that reach much farther than we ever thought imaginable, even to our children and our grandchildren. Righteousness preserves a people, but idolatry invites their destruction. Also, the use of “hate” and “love” in v. 5-6 are strong words, but should be understood in conjunction with keeping the Law of YHWH. This idea is not foreign, seeing that Jesus states to believers, “He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me” (John 14:21a). In the Bible, obedience displays love. The first two commandments are clear, citing idols and other gods as unacceptable, pagan contrivances of no worth, dispelling all objects of worship so that the people would focus only on the Word that YHWH was giving them. The third commandment concerns YHWH’s name and its use in daily life. Many have assumed that this is simply avoiding the use of “God” as a four letter word, but this command entails much more than simple curses. Merrill notes that the literal rendering of this command is, “You shall not take up the name of the LORD for an unworthy purpose.”[5] Thiswould include “name-it-and-claim-it” beliefs, cursing, invoking His name for a promise that is not kept, flippant worship, or attributing anything to Him that is in deviation to His character. A heightened form of this is seen in the unforgivable sin committed by the Pharisees in Matt 12:22-29 by attributing the miracles of YHWH through Jesus Christ to the glory/credit of Satan (Beelzebul- v.24).The fourth commandment concerns the Sabbath day (literally “a day of cessation”), a day set aside solely for the Lord. This command receives the greatest amount of elaboration by YHWH, yet it is the only command that is not repeated for the church in the New Testament (See Rom 14:5; Col 2:15-17). The command for this day is that it should be kept “holy,” meaning that it is to be set-apart, unique amongst the others, and with a special purpose in mind. One will immediately observe that the Sabbath rest echoes the rest that YHWH employed having finished with creation (Gen 2:2-3). This reasoning allows for Scripture to interpret itself, seeing that Exodus 20:11 is a general commentary on Genesis 1:1-2:3, and clearly shows that the “day-age” theory of creation is a worthless assumption. Otherwise, we would need to allegorize the text and state that “what God is really saying” is that we are to work 6,000 years and then rest for 1,000 years. By allowing Scripture to interpret Scripture, this faulty theological idea is put to rest. The fifth commandment speaks to the respect to be administered in the family. The family is one of the first divine institutions that YHWH initiated prior to the Fall of Man. The integral role that the family holds in society cannot be underestimated. It is the primary target of Satan throughout history and will continue to be so until his demise. This command alone holds drastic differences between today’s bouts of fatherlessness, unwed pregnancies, cohabitation, divorced couples, homosexuality, and government interference with family-based education, all of which are attempts to dismantle the family and corrupt the culture. In the case of Israel, honor was to be shown to the parents by the children, and what constituted “parents” is clearly in line with YHWH’s original design of one man and one woman (Gen 1:26-28). This command is unique in that a promise has been attached to it. Residing in the Land of Canaan, of which the people had been promised by YHWH, was contingent upon their respect for their parents. Only YHWH could allow for Israel to be removed from the land, thus He takes a personalinterest in this commandment, overseeing the consequences that result from its neglect among the people of Israel.Commandments 6-10 deal with infringing on one’s person and their personal rights. Being created in God’s image (Gen 1:26-28), men and women have significance, hold value, and are meaningful in the eternal plans of God. Murder, being a cold-blooded killing of a person apart from war, revenge, or legal execution, disrespects the image of God. In Genesis 9:6 we read, “Whoever sheds man’s blood, by man his blood shall be shed, for in the image of God He made man.” This commandment would deal with the first action of shedding man’s blood.Adultery tears apart the marriage relationship (Mark 10:9). By God’s design, a man and a woman become “one flesh” (Gen 2:24), being the core of the family structure. Monogamous relationships were truly unusual in Moses’ time, and seems odd when one is familiar with the accounts of Jacob’s life, having two wives and two concubines. Nevertheless, the ideal pattern is one man and one woman, just as it was in the beginning. This commandment would serve as a harsh reminder to Israel when they would be called out by YHWH for their unfaithfulness to Him in bowing down to other gods (Num 25:1; Ezek 16:15; Hos 1:2; 3:1).Stealing is a violation of one’s private property rights. Against Marxism and Communism, Israel’s Law protected private property and individual rights. Private ownership is a hallmark of a capitalistic society, something that the Bible promotes without shame.Lying, while terribly commonplace, was considered vile enough to have a warning issued against it in God’s Law. This would be the idea of defaming one’s character or slandering one’s image, both being actions that are wholly apart from truth. Lying is falsehood. Finally, the coveting of a neighbor’s possessions reveals a personal discontentment. In fact, commandments 7 through 9 could be summarized in this last command, with each action being a result of taking something that is not theirs, whether that be a mate, personal property, or one’s reputation. The possessions of another are not to be obsessed over. It is YHWH who is the Provider of Israel and He alone will give as He sees fit. To acquire anything apart from His provision or guidance is to live apart from Him.Exodus 20:18-20: Israel’s Response to Audible Revelation. In v. 18-20 we have the response of Israel at the base of the mountain. YHWH has spoken, audibly, and the spectacle that surrounded His convocation caused them to back up and shake with fear. Their cries to Moses were for him to serve as the intermediary between the nation and YHWH, for they feared that if they ever heard YHWH’s voice again it would kill them. Bringing order to the situation, Moses tells them not to be afraid, but to note that YHWH is testing them and this event, coupled with His presence among them, was to bring them to reverence so that they would not sin.God’s audible revelation of Himself was meant to leave a mark on Israel forever; one that caused them to think before every action and to consider Him before every decision. Stuart provides a perfect summary:“It was an altogether good thing that the people were terrified of God—their reaction indicated that they would be afraid of offending him through sin, and thus their fear would function as a discipline to keep them from sin. This is, in fact, always the value of the much-encouraged fear of God in Scripture. Being afraid of the consequences of disobeying God is among the most helpful attitudes any believer can possibly have. Those who try to suggest that the various commands to fear God are merely encouragements to hold him in some sort of honor or awe completely miss the point that fear is a beneficial guiding mechanism for human behavior.”[6] [1] Eugene H.
