In this episode, author Edward Ashton joins me to discuss the film Mickey 17, directed by Bong Joon Ho, based on Edward's book Mickey 7. The film and the book series explores themes of unfettered capitalism, whether or not people have souls, and the theoretical possibilities of colonizing other planets. In an earlier episode, I interviewed Edward Ashton about his book Mickey 7 and the sequel Antimatter Blues. At the time he had told me that Brad Pitt had picked up the rights to his film for Warner Brothers starring Robert Pattinson in the title role and costarring Toni Collete, Naomi Ackie, and Mark Ruffalo. Now that Edward is free from the NDAs he had signed during filming, we are able to discuss the exciting process of seeing his book turned into a new creative work.

¿Qué tan bien puede funcionar una fórmula narrativa clásica en un entorno contemporáneo? Eso es algo que Rian Johnson muestra en su cinta más reciente, en donde tendremos intrigas, una muerte y juegos con armas punzocortantes.Christopher Plummer interpreta a Harlan, el patriarca supremo en la familia Thrombey, quien ha tenido una buena vida tanto para él como para su familia gracias a que es un reconocido y vendedor escritor de novelas. En la celebración de su cumpleaños conocemos la dinámica familiar y los intereses de sus descendientes, los cuales han sido beneficiados por el cobijo de su buena fortuna. De pronto, lo inesperado: tenemos una muerte y todos son sospechosos en esta cinta que bien podría ser la adaptación fílmica del juego de mesa Adivina Quién, en donde conocemos a todos gracias a las habilidades deductivas del otrora super espía Daniel Craig, quien aquí interpreta a Benoit Blanc y debe descifrar el misterio de la muerte... a la vez que todos se pelean por los terrenos de la abuela, digo, la fortuna del abuelo. Quizás el mayor atractivo de esta cinta parezca ser su impresionante cast. Desde la pelea anunciada entre el Bond de Craig contra Chris Evans (el trasero de América, quien interpreta a un auténtico pero divertido patán en esta cinta), pasando por el encanto de Ana de Armas (interpretando a Marta Cabrera, la enfermera y confidente del desaparecido Harlan Thrombey), y llegando hasta grandes talentos como Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collete, Michael Shannon o Don Johnson, solo por mencionar a algunos. Todos en conjunto logran un ensamble impresionante en donde, mientras más los conocemos, no necesariamente se vuelven más intrigantes, pero sí vuelven la historia más entretenida. Rian Johnson, quien se ha vuelto infame para cierto sector de la audiencia (concretamente los viejitos amargados que se quejan que les cambiaron a sus Guerras de las Galaxias que al parecer ellos conocen mejor que nadie), sin embargo, es gracias a su entrega en esta saga que ha alcanzado reconocimiento y facilidad de presupuesto para sus siguientes trabajos. Esto queda claro con Knives Out gracias al cast que conjunta, algo difícil de conseguir si uno es un director independiente. Sin embargo, su mayor mérito es lograr narrativas limpias y claras en medio de una historia de intriga. Desde el principio sabemos lo que ocurre e incluso sabemos quién es el asesino desde la primera parte. ¿Eso hace que la historia se vuelva predecible e irrelevante? Para nada. Son los giros que aprovecha Johnson (quien también escribe la cinta) para traernos dando vueltas al explorar los secretos alrededor del evento que es motor de la historia. La cinta logra mezclar elementos particulares, en donde no duda en recordarnos su temporalidad, con menciones a Twitter, Baby Driver o Hamilton, pero todo dentro de un contexto en donde la historia podría estar ocurriendo en tiempo presente, o hace 100 años gracias a la ubicación principal donde se desarrolla todo. Incluso los chistes más banales que se presentan llegan a jugar su papel propio en el desarrollo de la historia, siendo elementos en juego para descifrar claves en el misterio ya resuelto. El mayor logro quizás en esta cinta es el ritmo dinámico que ejecuta de manera eficiente. Para una obra que dura más de dos horas, pareciera que es algo mucho más corto, algo a considerarse en tiempos en donde la audiencia en general tiene la misma capacidad de atención de un pez dorado y busca recompensas inmediatas incluso en algo que debe de cocinarse poco a poco. Afortunadamente, la presencia de detalles tanto visuales como narrativos, ayudan a mantener la atención del espectador.Mientras que en lados más serios tenemos programas como Succession o The Righteous Gemstones por HBO, esta es una variación del mismo tema en donde todos los integrantes de la familia reflejan lo peor de nuestro entorno social actual. Lo mejor del caso es que son perfectamente identificables y son esos aspectos que no queremos reconocer pero están presentes. De la misma manera, los mismos se sienten únicos, irrepetibles y con más capacidad de la que ellos en realidad tiene. Cualquier beneficio o ayuda que hayan tenido era mínimo pero bien merecido, algo que se lograba explotar solo gracias a sus talentos. La realidad es otra aunque dichos talentos se ven explotados en la búsqueda por sangre y dinero en donde muestran sus verdaderos colores en la lucha por la herencia. Curiosamente, todos los protagonistas parecen estar divirtiéndose tremendamente su trabajo en la cinta, sin importar si están representando al racista de derecha que apoya a Trump, o el pseudo liberal de conciencia social que es incapaz de valerse por sí mismo, incluso para pagar sus estudios en una academia de artes.Sin lugar a dudas, Entre Navajas y Secretos es una de las mejores cintas de este año, gracias al ensamble de ideas, actores y momentos que la vuelven no solo algo disfrutable, sino una cinta que merece verse en más de una ocasión, especialmente si son de ese selecto grupo que odia al director y escritor de esta cinta, la cual curiosamente toma elementos más cercanos a sus trabajos previos como Brick, que a los Jedi que le dieron el reconocimiento necesario para finalmente hacer este tipo de cintas. Desde el principio sabemos lo que ocurre e incluso sabemos quién es el asesino desde la primera parte. ¿Eso hace que la historia se vuelva predecible e irrelevante? Para nada. Son los giros que aprovecha Johnson (quien también escribe la cinta) para traernos dando vueltas al explorar los secretos alrededor del evento que es motor de la historia.La cinta logra mezclar elementos particulares, en donde no duda en recordarnos su temporalidad, con menciones a Twitter, Baby Driver o Hamilton, pero todo dentro de un contexto en donde la historia podría estar ocurriendo en tiempo presente, o hace 100 años gracias a la ubicación principal donde se desarrolla todo. Incluso los chistes más banales que se presentan llegan a jugar su papel propio en el desarrollo de la historia, siendo elementos en juego para descifrar claves en el misterio ya resuelto.El mayor logro quizás en esta cinta es el ritmo dinámico que ejecuta de manera eficiente. Para una obra que dura más de dos horas, pareciera que es algo mucho más corto, algo a considerarse en tiempos en donde la audiencia en general tiene la misma capacidad de atención de un pez dorado y busca recompensas inmediatas incluso en algo que debe de cocinarse poco a poco. Afortunadamente, la presencia de detalles tanto visuales como narrativos, ayudan a mantener la atención del espectador.Mientras que en lados más serios tenemos programas como Succession o The Righteous Gemstones por HBO, esta es una variación del mismo tema en donde todos los integrantes de la familia reflejan lo peor de nuestro entorno social actual. Lo mejor del caso es que son perfectamente identificables y son esos aspectos que no queremos reconocer pero están presentes. De la misma manera, los mismos se sienten únicos, irrepetibles y con más capacidad de la que ellos en realidad tiene. Cualquier beneficio o ayuda que hayan tenido era mínimo pero bien merecido, algo que se lograba explotar solo gracias a sus talentos. La realidad es otra aunque dichos talentos se ven explotados en la búsqueda por sangre y dinero en donde muestran sus verdaderos colores en la lucha por la herencia. Curiosamente, todos los protagonistas parecen estar divirtiéndose tremendamente su trabajo en la cinta, sin importar si están representando al racista de derecha que apoya a Trump, o el pseudo liberal de conciencia social que es incapaz de valerse por sí mismo, incluso para pagar sus estudios en una academia de artes.Sin lugar a dudas, Entre Navajas y Secretos es una de las mejores cintas de este año, gracias al ensamble de ideas, actores y momentos que la vuelven no solo algo disfrutable, sino una cinta que merece verse en más de una ocasión, especialmente si son de ese selecto grupo que odia al director y escritor de esta cinta, la cual curiosamente toma elementos más cercanos a sus trabajos previos como Brick, que a los Jedi que le dieron el reconocimiento necesario para finalmente hacer este tipo de cintas.

Creedme es una miniserie de 8 episodios de Netflix que se estrenó el pasado 13 de septiembre. La serie ha obtenido muy buenas críticas, y ha conquistado al equipo de Fuera de Series. Valentina Morillo, Marina Such y Maritxu Olazabal analizan la serie protagonizada por Kaitlyn Dever, Toni Collete y Merritt Wever.

Greg Kinnear, Toni Collete, Steve Carrell, Alan Arkin, Paul Dano y Abigail Breslin protagonizan una cinta con corazón y crítica al sueño americano. The time has come for something we found to be truly terrifying, this year's Hereditary. Earlier this year, this film divided audiences more than anything has since "mother!", and Jess and Andrew loved both of those movies. Toni Collete's performance in this film is startling, but there is more to it bubbling below the surface. If you saw it only once in theaters, a revisit gives a greater look to how all the pieces were put together, and how smoothly writer director Ari Aster was able to assemble it. At first watch, the film seemed to be slow to audiences, and we think that melts away on repeat viewings. The anxiety the film invokes in the viewer is what gives it the illusion of slow pacing. At home, the film remains as haunting as ever. Give it a watch on VOD to celebrate the 10th day of Halloween. Andrew also continues his journey through the "Masters of Horror" series with Lucky McKee's installment, "Sick Girl".
