In this episode of The Sonny Brown Breakdown, guest Scott Sievewright discusses his ecological approach to coaching martial arts. Sievewright emphasises the importance of live, unscripted sparring from day one to build relationships and develop skills, arguing that traditional techniques taught in isolation do not effectively transfer to real-life fighting situations. Sievewright believes his method can produce better, more skilled fighters compared to traditional approaches by developing movement repertoire and qualities through live, games-based play sparring. He highlights the role of sparring in correcting errors and the importance of adaptability and self-organisation in training. The conversation covers various themes, including footwork, external focus of attention, situational sparring, the relationship between distance and space in fighting, brain health in combat sports, and the challenges of transitioning from the gym to amateur fighting. Sievewright also discusses the importance of prioritising the health and safety of athletes, challenging the use of headgear in training and emphasising the need for fighters to routinely deal with pressure and compete in various events before amateur fights. He stresses the importance of individuality in training and the need for continuous experimentation and adaptation in the context of an ecological approach to coaching martial arts.

Tral man revives Kashmir's traditional martial arts Faroze Ahmad Bhat, a resident of south Kashmir's Tral is one of the rare faces in Kashmir valley who is deeply involved with traditional martial arts or Sqay. Sqay locally known as shamsherzani (Sabre-fighting) is an Indian martial arts form of sword-fighting originating from Kashmir valley. The history of Sqay can be traced in early days of Kashmir history. Since, 1999 Bhat has been playing martial arts, and last year he started his own Sqay martial arts academy for the youth in Tral. The main aim of the academy is that the youth, who come from different areas of Tral, are provided coaching by their mentor. The traditional martial arts or Sqay Bhat believes is the fastest-growing sport in the world. “The School Games Federation of India has already recognised the art which is gaining popularity at the world level also. The Federation organises competitions at the school, district, inter-district, state and national level while the Sqay Federation of India holds events up to the international level," Bhat said. " The art was recently placed in Khelo India and good thing is that it may be included in the Olympics." Bhat said that since childhood he was naughty and would always fight with children at his village. “Due to my fighting behavior my family sent me to nearby village Diver where a Sikh martial artist taught me all the skills and from there I went to indoor stadium Srinagar, and learnt Thang Ta, Karate, Judo." Hanshi Patrick McCarthy is a Martial Arts practitioner, instructor, and director of the International Ryukyu Karate Research Society (IRKRS). You can tell people anything, but you can't make anyone do anything. I think the idea of showing somebody how to learn seems to be more fruitful in the long run that telling, explaining, or offering what to learn. I think that role for a teacher or a mentor, if you are trying to empower someone, it's kind of nice to let them discover for themselves with a little bit of coaching. Hanshi Patrick McCarthy - Episode 586 With years and years of Martial Arts experience acquired directly from the descendants of the Okinawan Martial Arts in Okinawa, Japan, our guest today needs no introduction. Hanshi Patrick McCarthy, a Canadian who migrated to Japan in the 1980s then presently in Australia, is a pillar of the Traditional Martial Arts having written a lot of books about it such as the Classical Kata of Okinawan Karate, Ancient Okinawan Martial Arts: Volumes 1 & 2, and many others. In this epic episode, Hanshi Patrick McCarthy delivers an astounding revelation of his journey in the Arts and most importantly, the wisdom that he acquired through years of training. In this episode, I have the honor of having a conversation with Brandon Mccaghren co-owner of 10th Planet Decatur, Alabama. Brandon earned his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt under Eddie Bravo and was the first 10th Planet Instructor in the entire Southeastern United States. He has received each of his Jiu-Jitsu ranks directly from Eddie Bravo. In addition to being an experienced teacher and Black belt in the Traditional Martial Arts, Brandon has staked his claim as one of the top grappling competitors in the Southeast by taking titles in Kakuto, Good Fight, IBJJF, NAGA, and even Freestyle Judo to name just a few. He has also led 10th Planet to multiple Team Titles at many of these same events. Brandon is also one of the most highly respected instructors in the global 10th Planet organization, teaching seminars all over the United States on a regular basis. 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Decatur was recognized as the top-ranked academy in the 10th Planet system in 2014, largely in part to the team's competitive successes and Brandon's reputation as a world-class instructor. Brandon is a prolific idea machine and with the help of his wife Lindsay (also a black belt) to filter and execute on the good ideas, together they have cultivated a fascinating life based on a foundation of doing exactly what they want to do. It sounds so simple, right? But I would argue the majority of us make compromises in our career paths and that is partially what makes people like Brandon so interesting to share time with. In this episode we talk about the evolution of his martial art, how he started, grew and maintains his academy, some of his online strategies, his love of Pearl Jam and Radiohead, super chat sound effects whomp whomp whomp and his most recent endeavor and passion the PGF Professional Grapplers Federation. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/foreverwhitebelt/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/foreverwhitebelt/support

Welcome to the Combat Learning Podcast! I'm your host, Josh Peacock. In this first supra-seasonal bonus episode, I have a discussion with my old buddy Jestin Icasiano from CLP04 about a meme some of you have probably seen before. In this meme, two groups of black belt martial artists are compared: the first, a motley group of soft-looking hobbyist tang soo do or taekwondo black belts; and the second, a tough group of world class BJJ fighters. The headline reads "There are 'black belts,' and there are black belts" -- suggesting that BJJ black belts are of far and above superior quality. While it is a meme, and thus mostly a joke, Jestin and I believe that apples are being compared to oranges here because we understand that this is reflective of a real belief among jiujitsu people. In other words, it's not just that the styles are different but that the examples are cherry picked, since there are tough, word class athletes in traditional martial arts like tang soo do and taekwondo, too. Whether your a BJJ athlete or a traditional martial artist, this is an interesting discussion you won't want to miss. So if you're excited to dive in, hit the subscribe button on your podcatcher now! My guest today is Iain Abernethy, a well-known expert on practical karate training and kata application, and an advocate of traditional martial arts practice. In this episode, Iain presents his own view of kata as a process of 4 inextricable stages: 1. Solo Practice 2. Functional Application 3. Principle-based Partner Practice 4. Live Partner Practice or "Kata-based" Sparring While most other traditional martial artists view kata as a solo exercise that must be translated into practical techniques, Iain sees solo practice, application, and sparring as all one and the same process entailed by the kata system. Iain also explains what "kata-based sparring" is, why he hates one step sparring, and the necessity of bringing modern training methods into traditional martial arts practice. Many people who grew up in the 60s, 70s, and 80s remember watching media featuring karate masters, ninjas, and kung fu monks jump kicking through the air. We were memorized by the almost supernatural abilities these martial artists seemed to possess, and no doubt watching these movies and TV shows inspired more than one child to beg his parents to sign him up for karate classes. But things changed in the 90s as mixed martial arts and Brazilian jujitsu exploded onto the scene. All of a sudden the aforementioned ninja, karate masters, and kung fu monks lost their aura of mystique. Go to any martial arts forum or look through YouTube videos and you will probably find people claiming that if you aren't studying BJJ, boxing, or Muay Thai you are wasting your time. But is this really the case? Are traditional martial arts like karate, kung fu, and tae kwon do still worthwhile in a world where the competitive fighting scene is dominated by boxers and grapplers? That is the topic Al and Marcus will tackle today.
