Curtis is a comedian from New Jersey and host of "A Comedy & Bluegrass Show About Strange Public Records." In 2020, he created "The Lonely Jukebox" show, where he used an app to play songs on a jukebox inside an empty pub that was shuttered by Covid. Nobody heard the songs--but guests on the show included Cecily Strong, Richard Kind, and Jimmy Pardo. He has recently received a master's degree in music from Radford University. For his doctoral dissertation he is working on a participatory ethnography of circlesinging worldwide and a song cycle of pieces based on circlesinging techniques. She currently performs improvised musicals with iMusical, the house musical improv team for Washington Improv Theater, performs and leads Circles with VoiceExchange, and leads online immersive Song Dive workshops and a Monday morning online choir named Coffee Choir. Dina found VoiceExchange and circle singing in 2015 and has been a grateful member ever since. Joy Truskowski is a singer-songwriter and community songleader. She has performed as a solo artist in the Roanoke, VA area for 13 years. You can find her original songs on Bandcamp under the name “Joy Tru”. She started Star City Circlesinging in 2019 and has been leading circles with other co-leaders in Roanoke ever since. During the beginning of the pandemic she started contributing to VoiceExchange's online circles. She fell in love with all of them, and they all asked her to marry them. She said, “I can't marry you, but I'll join your group!” And that was a fair compromise. So she officially joined in the summer of 2021. Paris Kern started performing traditional folk music at coffeehouses and concerts when she was 16 years old. She studied classical vocal performance in college, but her heart was always in the world of pure traditional folk traditions. In 2011, for reasons unknown to her, she was internally compelled to attend Bobby McFerrin's CIrclesongs workshop. Feeling like a fish out of water, surrounded by mostly Jazz musicians, she nonetheless was hooked by the magic of Circlesongs and the sensation that her heart was being sung back to her. She has been leading circles in Washington DC, and Baltimore and is now starting circles in Southern Vermont. Casey Karaman never expected the biography of an urban planner to change the way he saw the world. But the nearly five years it took to work his way through that one massive biography changed his view of himself, those around him, and the way our lives are dictated by decisions made by people we will never know—people whose shadows loom over us. Casey Karaman is a writer, performer, improviser, and teacher who has worked with the Washington Improv Theater. Casey has performed in multiple theater productions, most recently in Second City's “Love Factually” at the Kennedy Center. He lives in Los Angeles.

Over the course of his career, Travis Charles Ploeger has helped to create and perform over 2,000 improvised musicals to audiences across the country. He joined Washington Improv Theater and created iMusical in 2006, after an eight-year career as the music director and pianist for Chicago City Limits in New York City. He loves performing. He loves spontaneous songwriting. He learned so much in his foray as musical director for Chicago City Limits. Travis shares that CCL and his NYC improv community gave him the confidence to create his own show, so when he moved to Washington DC, he did just that. He created iMusical and he has been running that show for 15 years now. Travis gives some great advice about what it takes to maintain a show for that long. The guy's first word was piano; It seems predestined that he'd be performing music throughout his life. Travis tells me that when he found musical improv, he felt like he had finally found his niche. He loves performing. He loves spontaneous songwriting. He learned so much in his foray as musical director for Chicago City Limits. Travis shares that CCL and his NYC improv community gave him the confidence to create his own show, so when he moved to Washington DC, he did just that. He created iMusical and he has been running that show for 15 years now. Travis gives some great advice about what it takes to maintain a show for that long. Whether or not you're a child of the 1990s, you can probably appreciate the adorable cuteness of Bobby Generic, the lead character of Bobby's World. It might creep you out a little bit to learn that the Fox Kids' animated series co-creator Howie Mandel wasn't just the voice of dad Howard Generic, but also Bobby as well. (He also voiced Gizmo in the Gremlins movies, so that cutens things up a bit, yeah?) But since we're keeping it creepy, we wanted to revisit the spookiest stories in Bobby's World lore for this special Halloween episode of the podcast. I had a chance to sit down with writer/director/producer Maxwell Atoms (The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy) to chat about the latest holiday special for Mystery Inc. This flick features guest stars Bill Nye the Science Guy and Elvira, Mistress of the Dark along with the sleuth crew you know and love, but keep an eye out for some special guests along the way. Fifteen years ago, The Boondocks changed the course of modern animation by not only featuring Black characters as the leads, but by being absolutely unapologetic in its content. That boundary-pushing show gained its own following along with a fair share of backlash, all of which is now par for the course for executive producer Carl Jones and producer Brian Ash. They've had celebrities like Oprah and Tyler Perry take issue with (and aim at) The Boondocks, just as they've had Adult Swim axe an episode before it was ever animated and HBO Max fully removing a previously aired episode from their listing. Censorship and button-pushing isn't new to Jones and Ash. Their newest animated series, Sugar and Toys, is cut from the same cloth, and the razor-sharp humor and laugh-out-loud variety sketches cut across all social, cultural, and political divides. It's first and foremost good comedy, but it's also another step in the rise of Black Animation. I had a chance to chat with Jones and Ash about Season 2 of Sugar and Toys, now on Fuse, in a lengthy conversation about everything from COVID-19, standards & practices, The Boondocks reboot, and Jones' upcoming collaborations with Matthew Cherry for his Hair Love series, and the likes of Seth MacFarlane, Steph Curry, and Norman Lear for an animated reboot of the classic sitcom Good Times. If you want to see a bunch of powerful comic book superheroes team up to fend off extraterrestrial threats to our home planet, there's no better place to look than Marvel's Avengers Defenders of the Earth! This 1986 animated series from King Features, with development by Marvel and production from a trio of overseas studios including Toei Animation, united the bigger-than-life heroes of King Features Syndicate. Flash Gordon, Phantom, Mandrake the Magician, and Lothar joined forces to defend Earth (hence the name) from the villainous intents of Ming the Merciless. Helping to fight back for the fate of their planet were the second generation of heroes, including Rick Gordon, Jedda Walker, the adopted son Kshin and his space-alien pet Zuffy, and Lothar "L.J." Junior. While these characters might not be the first that come to mind when thinking about comic book superheroes, they're definitely classics for a reason. We're coming up on their 100th anniversary -- a pretty monumental task for any character, really -- so what better way to celebrate than by watching Defenders of the Earth? Unfortunately, some of the backwards tropes -- racist, misogynist, every other -ist -- is part of the package here. Is it bad enough to dip, or just enough to force us into tough conversations? Glitch Techs Season 2 arrived on Netflix just last week. This new batch of 10 half-hour episodes continues the adventures of glitch-hunters Miko and Five and their all-star team of Hinobi technicians. New relationships will be explored, new insight into families and friends will be revealed, and tons of pop culture and video game Easter eggs will be scattered all over the place, virtual and IRL. But how does Season 2 compare to the fantastic first season released earlier this year? As gamers from a certain generation, there's a lot to love about Glitch Techs. But you don't need to get all the references (we certainly didn't) to enjoy this beautifully animated, wonderfully acted, smartly written, and brilliantly executed animated series. Right now, we're at the end of the current selection of episodes originally ordered into production by Nickelodeon before the show went to Netflix, but there is so much more story to tell, mythology to explore, and mysteries to solve. It's rare that we absolutely shred a cartoon on our weekly animation podcast, but it's also (thankfully) rare that shows like Hoops make it all the way to a finished, widely distributed production. I guess that's the price we play for today's ubiquitous streaming services; little to no standards and practices allows artists to deliver some cutting-edge animation you wouldn't normally get on network, cable, or premium TV, but it also lacks a quality filter. That's where we come in. From Ben Hoffman and featuring the voice talent of Jake Johnson, Hoops centers on a foul-mouthed high school basketball coach who hates everyone around him but manages to hate himself even more. If you're thinking that this could be a BoJack-like series or an animated take on Eastbound & Down, don't; aim much, much lower. While Hoops might -- I say again might -- have been edgy and boundary-pushing back in the late 1990s, its swings at being offensive just for the sake of being offensive miss 100% of the time in the comedy department. Shows like Family Guy, South Park, and their ilk proved that you could be offensive and still be funny; Hoops proves that that's easier said than done. This week's cartoon review comes courtesy of a Listener Recommendation, so we're legally obligated to check out Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles. With 44 episodes -- 4 of which are clip shows -- this 1999-2000 series tells the story of Rico's Roughnecks, a squad of space-based troops carrying out orders in defense of Earth. It continues the tales laid out in Robert Heinlein's book as well as Paul Verhoeven's '97 movie that started a fan-favorite franchise. But does Roughnecks live up to that pedigree? The computer generated-animated series definitely shows its age 20 years later. CG looks great when it comes to bugs and alien worlds but it's an absolute abomination when it comes to human faces, hair, expressions, and even lip sync. It's a mess. It quite honestly should be thrown back into the Uncanny Valley from whence it came. But is it worthy of being dipped? You've got to keep your ninja clans and scrolls straight, people. In this 2005 Gonzo-animated adaptation of Fûtarô Yamada's iconic works, the heirs to the Kouga and Iga ninja clans -- Gennosuke and Oboro -- hope that the unsteady truce between their tribes would last. But much like the Romeo and Juliet story this tale takes inspiration from, fate denies the lovers and thrusts their people into war after centuries of peace. The terms are set on two scrolls: One, bearing a list of Kouga warriors, and another that holds a Iga fighters. The names found on these scrolls can only be crossed out in blood... but will Basilisk be worth watching once it's all said and done? Amphibia fans by and large want to know one thing above all: Will Anne Boonchuy ever find her missing shoe? Hulu's original animated series Solar Opposites has quickly become a hit for the streaming platform. From the creators behind Rick and Morty, this animated sitcom focuses on a family of aliens who crashland on Earth with the intention of terraforming it. But when they start to understand what makes humans special and unique, they might just learn to love the backward bipedal terrestrials. Probably not though. What'll probably happen is either the shrunken humans trapped in the Wall will revolt and find a way to take vengeance against their alien captor, or the Pupa will achieve its ultimate purpose and destroy the Earth as we know it. Maybe both will happen. Maybe neither. All we know is, we hope that Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan have an endgame in mind so that Solar Opposites doesn't try to milk its genuinely funny premise until the inevitable heat death of the universe. You've probably heard of Samurai Jack and Dexter's Laboratory, and if you're a Genndy Tartakovsky fan, you know all about Star Wars: Clone Wars, Primal and Hotel Transylvania, too. But there's a good chance you might have missed out on his 2010 animated Cartoon network series Sym-Bionic Titan. The 20-episodes, one-season series (which is streaming on Netflix now) follows three young alien beings -- Lance, Ilana, and Octus -- who have the ability to combine to form a giant robotic warrior. But when they're not battling giant kaiju, they must attempt to blend into suburbia, all while protecting their new adopted home from the same beings that threatened to destroy their home world. We love Netflix's DreamWorks Animation series Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts. We sang its praises when it debuted this January, were happy to see that Season 2 continued to develop its colorful characters and make progressive strides forward in its story, and even talked about that more in our video review. Now, it's my pleasure to get a chance to talk to co-creators/showrunners Bill Wolkoff and Rad Sechrist once again to dig into all things Kipo a little more. Some spoilers follow.   Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts should honestly be on the Top 10 TV Shows on Netflix every day, but especially this weekend. Season 2 of Radford Sechrist and Bill Wolkoff's excellent animated series from Dreamworks Animation just arrived on the streaming service yesterday with a batch of 10 all-new episodes. We're going Greek -- Ancient Greek, that is -- in this week's nostalgic cartoon review with Ulysses 31. This early 80s animated series aims to retell Homer's epic poem "The Odyssey" set in the far-flung outer space of the 31st century. It's one part Saturday morning cartoon, one part classic literature, and 100% good, old-fashioned animated insanity. Shout-out to our longtime fan, friend, and regular contributor Bobby Anthem for recommending this one! Ulysses 31, a French-Japanese production that hails from DIC Audiovisuel and TMS Entertainment, sees the 31st century Ulysses and his crew attempting to find their way home to Earth after Zeus cursed them for destroying a gigantic robot cyclops.   Later today, the Powerhouse Animation cast and crew will be holding another watch-party for their epic, action-packed Mexicanime series Seis Manos. The Saturday Mourning Cartoons team wanted to get in on the Saturday-morning fun, so not only will we be re-watching the Viz Media series on Netflix again (and again and again), we're also bringing you a bit of bonus coverage for it! We here on the Saturday Mourning Cartoons team are getting in on the Saturday-morning fun that the Powerhouse Animation cast and crew is having with Seis Manos. Their weekly watch parties go behind the scenes of the epic, action-packed, original animated Netflix series -- one of the best of 2019 -- to offer up trivia, bonus content, and all sorts of insider info from the actors, animators, and creative talent that brought the Mexicanime to life. One of the major players in the Seis Manos story is Vic Chao, who brings a remarkable performance, balanced between gentleness and strength, to the character and mentor figure Chiu. We had a chance to chat with Vic Chao ahead of this today's new watch party, which was pretty well-timed considering today's pair of episodes are rather important to Chiu's mythology. Chao spoke at length about his experiences on Seis Manos, including his audition for Castlevania that ultimately led to the role of Chiu. Additionally, Chao shared his reaction to his character's fate and confirmed that you might just hear his voice coming out of more than one character's mouth. And speaking of other characters, we touched briefly on Chaos's role as Tseng in the new Final Fantasy VII Remake and his super-secret role on an upcoming Ben 10 storyline. There's a good chance you'll know Rob Paulsen's voice when you hear it. Be it Raphael in the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series or Donatello in the 2012 version, the iconic Warner Bros. mascot Yakko Warner from Animaniacs or the hit character Pinky from the super successful spin-off series Pinky and the Brain, Carl Wheezer from Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, or one of any of his nearly 1,300 roles, Paulsen has been honing his voice-acting craft for 40 years and continues to go strong today. His iconic characters from Animaniacs are due for another go-round this fall with Steven Spielberg's reboot of the series on Hulu, but Paulsen has plenty of other reasons to celebrate. I had a chance to chat with Paulsen as part of our ongoing Saturday Mourning Cartoons interview series. On this episode of Saturday Mourning Cartoons, we're busy trying to figure out what's been scratching inside our walls for the last few weeks. Turns out, it's a civilization of miniature mouse-like people called The Littles. They totally built a full-on city on our apartment's foundation, complete with tiny furniture, vehicles, and houses of their own. It'd be delightful if it didn't make us question our sanity. So big thanks to Benjamin Schyan for the listener suggestion this week since it staved off our cabin fever for just a little bit longer.
