Savoring Nature's Symphony at Youngberg Hill: A Conversation with Wayne Bailey

Welcome back, wine enthusiasts! This week, we're taking a delightful stroll down memory lane to May 22nd, 2021, when I had the privilege of visiting Youngberg Hill. As I meandered up the enchanting driveway, Wayne Bailey's daughter zipped by on a lawnmower, her infectious smile setting the tone for the day. Smiles truly are contagious, aren't they?Youngberg Hill's charm hit me like a spellbinding symphony – a massive tasting room perched on a hill, vines stretching as far as the eye could see, and a view that could steal your breath. Wayne Bailey, the owner, welcomed me, and we settled on the deck with a glass of their 2016 Sparkling Blanc de Noirs – an apt choice for our chat. The history here is rich: a Swedish farm family owned this land in the 1800s, and in 1987, Norman Barnett took over. The late 80s saw Ken Wright planting vineyards, igniting a transformation. Wayne Bailey entered the scene in 2003, nurturing the land organically, progressing to biodynamic practices, and embracing a no-till approach. Our conversation took us to the Jordan block – a haven of own-rooted vines, a rarity in Oregon. Wayne's eyes sparkled as he spoke of the soil, igniting a fascinating dialogue about viticulture. As we sipped wines, Wayne shared his journey – the struggles, the experiments, and the relentless pursuit of excellence.Tasting the wines, I was captivated. The 2017 Bailey Family Chardonnay Reserve, the 2017 Natasha Pinot Noir, and the 2017 Jordan Block (now J Block Y) all danced on my palate, each telling a unique story of the land. But it was the 2012 and 2013 vintages that stole the show – Wayne's dedication to craftsmanship and the land were palpable. We delved into Wayne's family, his daughters, and their shared love for the farm. Nutmeg and Ginger, the Scottish cows on-site, added an extra layer of charm to this idyllic setting. Oh, and did I mention the upcoming vineyard tour? Exploring the vineyard with your phone as your guide – a modern twist on a timeless experience. So, pour yourself a glass of Youngberg Hill wine, join me in reliving this enchanting journey, and discover the symphony of flavors that only nature and Wayne's passion can compose. Don't forget to mention "AIJ sent you" when you visit. Cheers to a symphony of wine and nature's wonders!

We love seeing the passion of the Action Sports industry. There are so many women and men that live, breathe, eat, and sleep in action sports. Each one of them has their own unique story.A friend once said ā€œYou are a unique snowflake!ā€ Apparently that saying means something different in the US than it does in Canada. But get past the jargon and think about his point, it makes sense. Each person is different and has a unique background. Every action sports enthusiast, athlete or not, came from a unique background and lifestyle. So when you look around today and meet new individuals that are part of the industry, appreciate the differences we each bring to the table!Luke Youngberg gave us some of his time so we can learn more about his unique lifestyle. What makes Luke different? Well during the summer he is growing christmas trees so in the fall he can harvest them, shipping them nationwide! That's pretty unique in my opinion. The other uniqueness of Luke is that he lives in Oregon and the closest RMSHA Circuit race is about 10 hours away, yet he does his best to make it to every race, even travels out to Colorado! We all have drive and passion, and I'd argue that you won't find the same level of passion for others sports like you will find within the Action Sports community. We treasured a childhood growing up on a farm in Iowa and the qualities and life lessons it gave. We wanted this for our three daughters (Natasha, Jordan, and Aspen). With the future in mind we wanted to create a sustainable and responsible farm. That is why we started farming organically in 2003 and continue to move toward biodynamic practices. Youngberg Hill is a small, family estate grower and producer of Oregon Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. We purchased Youngberg Hill in 2003 and overhauled the entire estate, including vineyard management, winemaking, tasting room, and hospitality. With backgrounds in winemaking, distribution, food & beverage, hospitality, and marketing, we knew that all of our talents would be used to turn something that was already beautiful on the outside into a place that was equally as beautiful on the inside, too.Having the Inn on the vineyard is a great way to meet people from all over the world, make new friends, and to share the beauty of our McMinnville winery. It is wonderful to share our world with those who have a common interest in good wine, good food, and the wonder that abounds in this beautiful place we call Oregon wine country.

Youngberg Hill Chardonnay 2015 Light nose of toast, toasted marshmallow and flowers It’s dry with medium bodied, medium acidity with flavors of grapefruit pith, cheese, vanilla and a little smoke The oak is there but not heavy handed Priced around $40 Ā  Youngberg Hill Nastasha Pinot Noir 2014 Beautiful ruby color Aromas of black cherry and dusty earth It’s dry with light tannins and medium plus, almost high acidity with flavors of black cherry, black plum, earth/dry dirt, dried herbs with a long finish To me, this is a real fruit forward, juicy black fruit wine, although a light bodied wine - it’s more ripe Pinot Noir - like Wayne said 2014 was a warmer year in Willamette Priced around $50 Ā  Youngberg Hill Jordan Pinot Noir 2014 This block of vineyards is pretty much right next to the Nastasha block. Aromas of candied black cherry, sweet baking spice like cloves and star anise and dried earth It’s dry, light bodied with light tannins, medium plus acidity and flavors of black plum, black cherry, earth/ forest floor, and mushroom on the finish Similar to the Nastasha but more earthy flavors vs. fruit Priced around $50 Ā  You can learn more about these wines and purchase them here Ā  We’re coming up to our 100th episode and to celebrate, we want to make you part of the show! Below is the nomination, which comes from a letter given to Trooper Craig Youngberg from his Sergeant. To: Trooper Craig Youngberg From: Sergeant Brandon Whitehead It came to my attention that you responded to the report of a multi-vehicle accident in the westbound lanes of I-84 near Taggart’s during the evening hours of March 3, 2016. The rest of your crew was tied up on a semi crash that was blocking nearly the entire southbound interstate of I-15 including the on ramp from 24th Street. Without hesitation, you responded to the multi-vehicle crash once the scene was controlled for the semi crash. During the night it had been raining hard and the mountain side had become saturated with water. Several rocks of various size had rolled down off the mountainous outcrop and landed in the travel lanes of I-84. You took care of business and filled out the required paperwork, getting all but one motorist on their way. The particular vehicle which was not able to get on its way was occupied by a young Hispanic couple, on their way to an out of state funeral. This particular couple had limited financial means, complicating their ability to negotiate with a tow truck to move them to a safe location. Upon learning of their financial quandary, you offered to give the tow truck driver $50.00 which would allow them to pay the bill to get towed off the freeway. The tow truck driver refused to take money from you, and agreed to tow them off to the Best Western in Uintah for the money they had. Once the couple and their vehicle had been towed to the Uintah Best Western, adjacent to a Goodyear Tire shop, you went even further. Upon learning they planned to stay the night in their vehicle, you used your personal money to secure a motel room for the couple, to allow them to have more pleasant accommodations, to the tune of nearly $100.00. Trooper Youngberg, your actions that evening exemplify what it truly means to serve the public, above and beyond any reasonable expectation set forth by me or the department. In a turbulent time of the outspoken minority shrieking and complaining about alleged officer misconduct and improprieties, your actions speak loud and clear about the professional, caring, men and women we call State Troopers. As your sergeant and direct supervisor, I could not be more proud of your actions. What you did for this couple in their personal moment of despair speaks volumes about your character and core values. It is people like you Trooper Youngberg, who absolutely bring honor to this department and the moral fabric it is constructed from. Let this letter of commendation serve as a small token gesture of my personal appreciation for your actions and compassion for your fellow man. On behalf of the department, thank you for all you do in serving the community.
