History of the Germans

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 8, 2023 33:25

These last few episodes you may have wondered how all this hangs together. This week we will try to resolve this question. What we will talk about is how the great stem duchy of Saxony fell apart. And there are two stories about that. One is the story of Henry the Lion and his fall in 1180. That story has been repeated over and over again and put into a context of rivalry between the Welf and the Hohenstaufen, between Guelfs and Ghibellines. It makes for a great story of betrayal and revenge. But it is also partly wrong and more importantly, not the whole story. The whole story is one about princely opposition against centralising tendencies, about an antagonism between the south and the north and about a broad trend of fragmentation of power that engulfed not just the empire but also Italy, Poland, Denmark and others. It is the resulting environment of warring mid-sized principalities that allowed alternative structures like the Hanseatic League and the Teutonic Knights to emerge. So let's get straight into it.The music for the show is Flute Sonata in E-flat major, H.545 by Carl Phillip Emmanuel Bach (or some claim it as BWV 1031 Johann Sebastian Bach) performed and arranged by Michel Rondeau under Common Creative Licence 3.0.As always:Homepage with maps, photos, transcripts and blog: www.historyofthegermans.comFacebook: @HOTGPod Twitter: @germanshistoryInstagram: history_of_the_germansReddit: u/historyofthegermansPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/Historyofthegermans

This week we talk about what happens after the fight for independence is won. As had happened countless times before in history, precious freedoms gained in bloody struggles can be lost easily in the subsequent peace, not to the old adversary, but to new, homegrown usurpers. That is at least one way of telling the story, the other being, that every major political upheaval is followed by a period of consolidation that embeds the gains made and truncates the excesses that appeared during the revolutionary period.Something like that happened following the Saxon wars when Lothar of Supplinburg, a hitherto minor count from Westphalia is raised to ducal authority in 1106. Before he took the reins of the duchy, Saxony had turned into a free for all. Whenever a rich count or margrave fell victim to the various dangers a civil war generated, his cousins and peers would race to first seize his wife or daughter and then use their claim to grasp as much of his property as possible. A process not much more dignified than the opening of the doors on a Black Friday pre-pandemic.Lothar established a central authority for the duchy that calms things down considerably. It is during this time that four of the five great princely dynasties in the North get established, the Welf, the Wettins, the Ascanier and the counts of Holstein. The rise of these four was however not a given. There were others, like the counts of Stade and Wiprecht of Groitzsch whose burning ambitions came to nought as they stumbled in the race between reproduction and their near inevitable violent death. The music for the show is Flute Sonata in E-flat major, H.545 by Carl Phillip Emmanuel Bach (or some claim it as BWV 1031 Johann Sebastian Bach) performed and arranged by Michel Rondeau under Common Creative Licence 3.0.As always:Homepage with maps, photos, transcripts and blog: www.historyofthegermans.comFacebook: @HOTGPod Twitter: @germanshistoryInstagram: history_of_the_germansReddit: u/historyofthegermansPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/Historyofthegermans

Today I speak with Turiya, who – among other losses and traumas - shares the turning point in her life when she lost her then 33-year-old husband Welf von Hannover in 1981. Her relationship with death, the impermanence of physical life significantly changed another time with the loss of her beloved partner Maja 6 months ago, where she experienced something, she never had before: ‘Then one night the message came, and it was: Love Is All. And there was such a strong feeling. Love is the bond that brings us over the bridge and that brings two things into oneness, that overcomes the separation. In this case, the separation is a loss of the physical body. But the heart and the love are there. Love Is All.' Turiya's story is deeply moving and will encourage you to look for something beyond the physical. About this week's guest Turiya is the co-founder of Path Retreats and the transformational process Path of Love with Rafia Morgan. Together they also lead a one-year Holistic Counsellor training for therapists Working with People – School of Counselling. Read Turiya's bio in the extended show notes. Topics discussed in this episodeThe death of her grandfather when she was 7 years old The sudden and unexpected death of her husband Welf von Hannover at the age of 33 years old at the Osho AshramThe lacking understanding of shock and trauma in the 80sThe fear of death always being presentLiving in a culture that avoids death and experiences a lack of connection to the formlessOsho's deathMaja's deathGrief and the loneliness can make one feel orphaned by existenceThe importance of contact in the face of griefResources mentioned in this episodeQuote by Carlos Castaneda:‘Death is our eternal companion. It is always to our left, an arm's length behind us. Death is the only wise adviser that a warrior has. Whenever he feels that everything is going wrong and he's about to be annihilated, he can turn to his death and ask if that is so. His death will tell him that he is wrong, that nothing really matters outside its touch. His death will tell him, I haven't touched you yet.'A Year to Live: How to Live This Year as if it Were Your Last by Stephen LevineLinks--> For more information, please visit Nathalie's website. --> Subscribe to the newsletter to receive updates on future episodes here.--> Join the podcast's Instagram page. Thanks for listening to HOW TO DEAL WITH GRIEF AND TRAUMA. 1149-1152 In his lst few years the ill and exhausted king Conrad III relies more and more on his nephew, Frederick, the duke of Swabia called Barbarossa becasue of his ginger beard. Barbarossa forms the cornerstone linking the warring houses of Welf and Waiblingen. His military capabilities and diplomatic skills propell the barely 30 year olf to the top of domestic and international politics. When Conrad III died suddenly, he sees his chance. Pushing aside his cousin, the 8-year-old son of Conrad III, he gains support from both the old family supporters of the Hohestaufen family as well as from its archenemies, Henry the Lion and Welf VI. With their support he gets elected and crowned in a record 24 days. But that is where the hard work starts. Conrad had left a realm in anarchy. Can Barbarossa calm it down? George II, King of Great Britain and Ireland and Elector of Hanover from 1727-60, was considered short-tempered and uncultivated, but during his reign presided over a great flourishing in his adoptive country - economic, military, and cultural. In this talk, Norman Davies places George II in the unfamiliar framework of a composite state, stressing the monarch's conviction that his native German possessions were no less important than his British ones, together with the unfamiliar story of how his German Electorate was governed from St. James's Palace in London. He also discusses his book, George II: Not Just a British Monarch, and its use of unconventional terminology, calling the monarch 'George Augustus' (not just George II), insisting that he was 'King-Elector' not just a mere King, that he belonged to the dynasty of Von Welf (the Guelphs) not to the invented tribe of 'Hanoverians', and that his coat-of-arms, which, inter alia, bore the crown of the Holy Roman Empire, was 'royal and electoral', not just, as the British always say, 'royal'.Speaker: Professor Norman Davies FBA, Professor Emeritus of History, University of London; Honorary Fellow, St Antony's College, University of Oxford; Honorary Fellow, Clare Hall, University of Cambridge

D., Roudot, P., Hake, K., Whitehead, L., York, A. G., Dean, K. M., Fiolka, R. P. Abstract: We introduce a cost-effective and easily implemented scan unit which enables any camera-based microscope to perform projection imaging from diverse viewing angles. We demonstrate this capability on Lattice Light-Sheet and Oblique Plane Microscopy by rapidly delivering projection images with an uncompromised lateral resolution and high optical contrast. By imaging the sample from one or multiple perspectives, our method enables visualization of rapid biological processes, real time stereoscopic imaging as well as three-dimensional particle localization throughout a cellular volume from just two images. Furthermore, because our projection imaging technique provides intuitive three-dimensional renderings in real-time, it improves microscope usability, allows users to more-readily optimize instrument performance and identify biological phenomena of interest on-the-fly, while also reducing data overhead by a factor of >100. We leverage our rapid projection method to image cancer cell morpho-dynamics and calcium signaling in cultured neurons, to perform three-dimensional localization of genetically encoded nanoparticles, as well as to image orthogonal views of an embryonic Zebrafish heart simultaneously. The platform gig economy has brought several changes in the way work is performed and organised. Some kinds of work challenge the very underpinnings of labor and industrial laws - such as the need for a place of work and the space for collective bargaining. Tech mediated platform gig work while offering flexibility to those who seek it and low entry barriers, may also in its own way be expanding the margins of society leaving those who are doing such work with little recourse in the law or little opportunity to negotiate futures. In this context, Alok and Sarayu discuss futures of workers and discuss the ways in which politics and law needs to be imagined.

Phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) and its phospholipid products are polarized toward the front of migrating fibroblasts, but their exact function in persistent motility remains unclear. Welf et al. reveal that PI3K signaling helps reorient migrating fibroblasts by stabilizing branched protrusions at the leading edge, allowing the cell to pivot and move in a different direction. This biosights episode presents the paper by Welf et al. from the April 2, 2012, issue of The Journal of Cell Biology and includes an interview with senior author Jason Haugh (North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC). Produced by Caitlin Sedwick and Ben Short. See the associated paper in JCB for details on the funding provided to support this original research.
