Josh humorously contrasts his ministry work with Jason's role as a megachurch pastor, blending humor with humility as they transition into the heart of the discussion: being disciples who model a life others can follow. Josh highlights a pivotal question that shaped his journey: “Are we disciples worth reproducing?” He explains how this question challenged him during his time in India and emphasizes the importance of living a life that's worth replicating to spark true disciple-making movements. Jason reflects on Matthew 28, pointing out how the call to make disciples goes beyond personal salvation to living out Jesus' commands daily. He warns against reducing discipleship to intellectual belief and stresses the need for a life fully surrendered to Christ. The conversation also explores the role of guilt in discipleship. Jason notes that guilt may motivate in the short term, but only a deep love for Jesus sustains true obedience. Drawing from the Gospel of Mark, he explains that Jesus' worthiness is what compels people to follow Him, forming the foundation of authentic discipleship. Josh shares a vivid spiritual dream from 2017, where he saw Jesus and the Holy Spirit dancing in a harvest field, inviting him to join them. This powerful image captures the joy of participating in God's mission and highlights the relational, invitational nature of Jesus' call. Throughout the episode, both hosts stress the importance of living a life of overflow—being filled with the Spirit and letting that flow into every aspect of life, not just on Sundays. Jason compares this to being a funnel rather than a bucket: a funnel channels what it receives, symbolizing a life fully engaged with Jesus and His work. Josh recounts his early experiences in India, admitting his understanding of discipleship was initially shallow. He underscores that true discipleship starts with personal transformation through Christ, leading others into that same journey—not just delivering sermons. They also reflect on how God uses imperfect people for extraordinary purposes, emphasizing that it's not about being flawless but about being obedient and dependent on Jesus. Finally, the hosts invite listeners to reach out for resources and support as they grow as disciples who make disciples, promising encouragement and inspiration in future episodes. #Discipleship #Jesus #Faith #Surrender #Obedience #Christianity #Transformation Get Discipleship.org's premium Podcast Feed: https://disciplemakerspodcast.supercast.com/ Check out the following eBooks from Discipleship.org: -- What Is Church? He reflects on how topics like discipleship have evolved from being niche to central in today's conferences, signaling a renewed focus on God's work. Moving on, the speaker introduces his co-speaker, Hollis Half, teasing their catchy session title aimed at drawing in the audience. The conversation shifts to a spiritual tone with a prayer expressing gratitude for knowing God and a commitment to disciple-making. The speaker uses an amusing analogy of 'toads' and 'lizards' to illustrate passive versus proactive approaches in ministry and outreach. Exploring further, he describes 'toads' as those comfortable in their church 'lily pads,' focusing on internal comforts like facilities and attendance. In contrast, 'lizards' represent leaders who actively engage the community, prioritizing outreach and action over comfort. Drawing from personal experiences, the speaker shares how his early ministry's growth led to a shift from active community engagement, when renting spaces, to a more complacent focus on maintaining a permanent church building. He critiques the American church's tendency towards comfort and security, sometimes overshadowing the mission of outreach. Anecdotes illustrate how these mindsets can hinder effective ministry and outreach efforts. Highlighting Jesus's approach to ministry, he emphasizes the need for dynamic, mission-minded leaders—'lizards'—who can spark revival and reach out beyond traditional church boundaries. The talk lightens with personal stories, including encounters with unlikely evangelists and successful outreach movements like Promise Keepers, emphasizing the effectiveness of proactive engagement over internal church activities. The discussion shifts to practical advice from Hollis Half on the urgency and strategy of ministry planning, drawing lessons from his extensive experience. He underscores the importance of intentional planning and strategic thinking inspired by biblical examples like Moses and Nehemiah. In conclusion, the episode encourages churches to foster cultures that prioritize disciple-making and innovate relationally and symbolically to reflect God's strategic approach in their ministry planning. Finding a church can be difficult for those leaving Mormonism. Fear and uncertainty are the biggest roadblocks. It's helpful to have an understanding of what "church" is and what it isn't. It's time to move away from pablum and pious platitudes. We need pastors who study and can "rightly divide the word of truth."

We begin a new sermon series called We Are, where we are going to look at our personal and corporate role as the church. We begin by looking at what our identity is, and why it's a constant fight happening for it. To have a proper view, we must define our identity based on How Christ sees us. We are fully accepted, eternally valuable, totally forgiven, and fully capable. As the church, people should see us as distinct because we are the royal priesthood, set apart, and we are God's special possession. Christ gave His life as a ransom to save us from the justice due us because of sin, and He is much better that we deserve because He made us acceptable to God. Our life and identity should reflect Him and since we are His chosen people, we are to live for Him. Being a Christian should be an action, not a description of how we live. You might ask, why do people go to church, and we would answer that it is our purpose in life. Its who we are, our identity, not a building. As we study the bible in this series, we are going to define our identity, explain how to live for Jesus, and what our mission to reach the lost is. Stay tuned for next week when we'll dive deeper into our role as the church. If you want to take the next step and become a part of the church officially, we would love to talk to you about what membership looks like and how to make a commitment. BurntHickory.com/next
Deconstructing Church - Week 1 - What Is Church, Really? by The Summit Church
Ps Brad Hayman - 08/08/21 - What Is Church?
In the second part of our series "What Is Church?" Clayton Ritter expands on Jesus' description of what church is. When Jesus described to His disciples what He was intending to build, He chose a non-religious term that likely surprised his audience. He said he would build His ekkleisa -- a Greek word that meant a gathering of at least 2 or 3 people for a specific purpose. Find out in this episode what that means for us today.
In this first part of our series "What Is Church?" Clayton Ritter shows how church is God's family and how being part of His family sets the tone for every other relationship we have.
Introduction 1. What ISN'T Church? a. Building b. School for morals c. Institution 2. What IS Church? a. Holy b. Universal c. Community 3. An Invitation
The New Verb in verse 22. The action and the people involved in the incomplete sentence of verse 22 – “wives … to your husbands” must be filled in with the paired actions of the Spirit-filled believers in Ephesians 5:19a and 21. Thus Paul's meaning in verse 22 is Wives and husbands be submitting to the teaching and correction you are receiving from one another in Christ-ing verbs can be read as having an exclamation point after each of them so I can read verse 22 this way too: “Wives and husbands submit to the teaching and correction you are giving to one another in Christ.”Verses 22 to 24 are formed by Paul not in a 1, 2, 3 linear pattern of ideas but as a mirror parallel or chiastic pattern. It follows an A B B' A' pattern. That means that the two parts in the middle in verse 23 are linked together, and that verses 22 and 24 are linked and mirror one another. Since verse 24 is a mirror of verse 22 we can look at it to find out about the last couple of words in verse 22. “to the Lord.” Why does Paul add these words? In verse 24 Paul writes in Greek “as the church submits to Christ even so wives to their husbands in everything.” Because we know what it means for Christians to submit to Christ in everything we know the limits and the extent of what it means for Christian wives to be mutually submitting themselves to their husbands as they and their husbands are teaching and correcting one another in their Christian walk. These verses are not about how a household is to be organized, hierarchically or not. This is how two believers who are joined together in marriage are the ultimate example of how Christians can be mutually building up one another in their Christian walk. So verse 22 means: Christian couples be submitting yourselves to the speaking, the teaching and correction, you are getting from one another as to your life in Christ.GO DEEPER!

Pastor Francis Chan once said, "Our greatest fear should not be of failure but of succeeding at things in life that don't really matter." In the Book of Acts, we see read as person after person, in city after city rebelled against a life of just going through the motions spiritually, politically, and culturally and came alive with purpose. As we study the Book of Acts, we will see the power of individual believers come alive in the Power of the Holy Spirit as they live and work in community with other believers to advance the Good News of God’s Story. What Is Church? God wants us to come into His house to have a CONNECTION, CONVERSATION and COMMITMENT. Not just an experience.
Part 23 – What Is Church? We are living at a time in history where it seems that anything that is of long standing tradition is being called into question. Renewed calls go forth on every side, calling for change. Out with the old and in with the new is the resounding voice of this post-modern generation. Whether it’s marriage; the family home; politics or education; that which once served our forefathers well for centuries and in some cases, from the dawn of time, is being re-examined in light of the new-fangled philosophies being offered by the so-called experts. Sadly, as one looks to the Church, it too follows suit with this itching craving for that which is new. In a period where Church attendance in the West is in decline and atheism and secularism is on the rise, fighting for its “perceived” survival, the Church believes that unless it becomes relevant to this “youth” driven generation, then it will disappear from society and die of old age (literally). In an effort to try and retain the young people who are leaving the Church in their droves, the Church feels pressured to rediscover itself and if need be, reinvent itself to meet the needs of a changing population. Everything from “who” constitutes the Church to the “way” we ought to do Church is on the table for consideration. High-tech marketing research companies are being employed to find out what the local communities want from their local Church in the hope that Church attendance might be boosted and the needs of the community met. Fun days replete with BBQ and games; a nursery for the toddlers; a coffee shop; sports events and a whole host of other amusements ranging from Bingo to Yoga; all now are high on the priority list of what is deemed to make a “successful” Church. In a vastly changing tolerant society, it is felt that the Church’s decline is owing to the fact that the Church has lost touch with the people. However, upon closer inspection, we shall see that losing touch with people is not the root of the Church’s problem so much as it is that the Church has lost touch with God. In this twenty-third teaching part, we shall explore from Holy Scripture “who” and “what” the Church is. Download teaching notes (pdf) http://traffic.libsyn.com/bethesdashalom/23_What_Is_Church.pdf
