Chris Douglas is a Montana-based photographer and creative director who is one of the most sought-after visual storytellers in the American West. Chris is a go-to photographer for iconic brands such as Filson, Stetson, and Mossy Oak, and his editorial work appears regularly in publications including Modern Huntsman and Men’s Journal. In a world flooded with iPhone photography and armchair creatives, Chris’s work stands out as being artistically stunning and of the highest professional caliber. - When viewing Chris’s work, most people would assume that he’s been laser focused on photography for his entire career. But even though his interest in photography began at age ten, the first half of his career was spent in front of the lens-- first as an international model for brands such as Versace, and then as a successful television actor. But life moving between LA, New York, and Milan was not a fit with his love of the outdoors, so Chris eventually moved to Montana, where he continued his life-long passion for hunting and adventure. Then, as you’ll hear him describe, Chris was severely injured in a horse accident, which became the catalyst that led him to leave acting behind and devote his full energies to photography. - Those of you who are long-time listeners know that I spend a lot of time preparing for each of these interviews, but, as you’ll hear, I was completely surprised by much of Chris’s story. Chris is unbelievably humble and keeps a low profile, so I was honored that he was open to sharing his full journey with me on the podcast. We started out chatting about his upbringing in east Tennessee and his tight-knit, supportive family that he credits with being the foundation for all of his success. Then we discussed his fascinating career trajectory-- from international model to soap opera star to television host to photographer. We had a great conversation about his Native American ancestry and how Native culture has influenced his work and family’s life in Montana. - Chris’s story is both entertaining and instructive-- he is a wonderful example of how life’s unexpected twists and turns can lead people on the most interesting journeys. And how hard work, humility, creativity, and professionalism can result in a one-of-a-kind life and career. Check out the extensive episode notes for links to everything we discuss. After attending public Italian school up until the age of 18, he moved to the United States of America to attend Occidental College in Los Angeles. He pursued his BA in acting and also studied at the London Dramatic Arts perfectioning his art. He often loved to take his friends and family members around, proud of his cultural heritage and at ease in front of crowds. Angelo worked for companies of all sorts of shape and form, creating an outstanding CV and receiving thousands of 5-star reviews on TripAdvisor and other social channels. He then realized that there was a niche of tourism that needed more attention. A segment of people that were actually looking for authentic emotions and that valued their dream of coming to Italy as extraordinary and needed to pursue every aspect they had ever dreamt of: food, wine, art, culture, soccer, fashion, ferrari, etc. He then founded LivItaly Tours with the intent of creating services that matched people’s dreams of Italy and that allowed them to authentically experience all of them, however and whenever they wanted, a la carte, throughout their vacation. Along with this, knowing that nobody dreamt about following a flag, in large groups, and having dirty headsets in their ears, he decided that even the most traditional of tours, needed to be an experience and opted to cap small group tours at max 6 people and offer private tours, all at competitive pricing. The mixture of the two ingredients: the quality of the tours and the variety of the offer, made LivItaly a leader in the Italian industry. With the help of Kristin, his wife, they brought LivItaly to be recognized internationally and partner and collaborate with the most infallible businesses of the world. LivItaly’s wide range of offers also include truly fantastic family tours and activities in almost every corner of the peninsula. Activities dedicated to provide entertainment to all family members, give the parents the ability to trust and relax while touring and making sure children go back with fond memories of their time in Italy. After years of providing excellent service to clients in Italy, LivItaly recently expanded to Paris, London, and Spain under the LivTours umbrella. Follow Angelo on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. LIVTALKS The LivTours team has recently revealed LivTalks, a series of online events that bring the world to "visitors", even when we can't travel. He went on to earn a degree in marketing from the University of San Francisco while spending summers, weekends and every spare moment working at the winery. He officially joined the Benziger Family Winery in 1993 as a Brand Manager. In addition to sales responsibilities, Chris also oversees the home ranch and its many farm related duties, i.e. shepherding the Benziger flock of sheep and cows, tending to the estate vegetable and fruit trees, and producing the Biodynamic preparations for all our vineyards. Our guest on the show today is blogger, software cowboy, and podcast host Chris Keathley. Chris is a senior engineer at Bleacher Report, co-host of Elixir Outlaws, and writer of an assemblage of open-source software. He joins us today to speak about his new projects, his journey with functional programming, and what it is like to run Bleacher Report’s infrastructure on Elixir. Chris gives us the lowdown on Norm, a data validating interface he recently completed, weighing in on how it is different from Dialyzer and what it can offer as far as scalability. We hear more about how Chris got introduced to Elixir through Haskell, why he wishes he learned Clojure sooner, and why Ruby on Rails isn’t going anywhere soon. Chris also gets into the tradeoffs these languages make to correlate with Erlang. He argues that Elixir can only be more widely adopted if more people build cool things in it, and then lays out some of its power in supporting Bleacher Report’s user interface. We pick Chris’s brain about what his company is trying to optimize at the moment and hear about their preference for capacity over speed, and their techniques for failing gracefully during traffic spikes. Chris tells us how much he loves Elixir due to its use of ETS and other functionality which allows Bleacher Report to keep running even above capacity. Finally, we hear about some of the observability practices that Bleacher Report uses when deploying new systems and predicting future spikes. Plug in for a great conversation and hear why you should get building with Elixir now! Key Points From This Episode: Chris’s explanation of Norm, his new software that describes data moving through a system. Chris’s introduction to functional programming through learning Haskell, Clojure, and Elixir. What makes a great functional language: immutable data and first class functions. Things that make Clojure great, such as its thought out, holistic design. Characteristics of Cons lists versus RRB trees, and what makes the latter better. An acknowledgment of the necessity of the tradeoffs Elixir makes to interact with Erlang. A little bit about the language Chris wrote to do the admin of code challenges in. Why Ruby (on Rails) will not be replaced by Elixir due to commoditization that surrounds it. An argument that Elixir can only be more widely adopted if more people build with it. Why any language can build any program thus comparisons between them are arbitrary. Where Chris sets the bar as to when something is performant. Chris’s preference for high user capacity capability over speed of delivery at Bleacher Report. Optimization projects at Bleacher Report such as using few boxes and handling traffic spikes. Things Chris loves about Elixir such as its ability to deliver more from its boxes. Elixir’s use of ETS and how Chris coded a complex problem in half a day using it. How Chris detects spikes using time series, StatsD, and other observability tools. In this week’s episode of Agile Coaches’ Corner, Dan Neumann brings on a colleague of his at AgileThought to explore the topic of design thinking — Chris Spagnuolo. Chris is one of the Product Specialists at AgileThought, serving as Principal Consultant of Product Management and Innovation. He has a deep background in a lot of things from a products standpoint and is incredibly passionate about all things related to design thinking, Lean Startup, and Agile. Dan and Chris give their insight on what design thinking is, where it came from, its core elements, and how to incorporate it into overall delivery. Chris also gives his advice around design thinking and where he sees it developing in the future. Key Takeaways What design thinking is: Designing products with people in mind Focusing on understanding the problem that you’re solving and understanding the person that you’re solving it for, and then building a solution A fluid process with a loose methodology Building a product, having the real end user test it, and incorporating their feedback The five core elements of design thinking: Empathize: get to know your customer on a personal level (who they are, what they do, and what they’re trying to do) Define: looking at how you can start to frame the problem that your customer has Ideate: coming up with as many ideas as possible that can solve that problem Prototype: create lots of low-fi prototypes to see if these solutions solve the problem Test: give the customer the solution, test it with them, and collect the feedback without bringing your own biases or opinions in And remember: you don’t have to go through these core elements in this order; you can go back to any of them at any time to get it right Chris’ advice around design thinking: Small batch things and solve small parts at a time Support continuous discovery The more feedback the better; don’t make false assumptions about how to go forward How to incorporate design thinking into the overall delivery: Getting feedback from real end users to incorporate Start up an input committee and get real customers that well-represent the end users to sit on the team Get feedback on each iteration Make sure there’s somebody holding the vision and focusing the feedback back into the iterative process Where Chris sees design thinking being applied in the future: Escaping the realm of product development and instead permeating business in general Being brought into the organizational level for better engagement All decisions within the business Mentioned in this Episode: Chris Spagnuolo (LinkedIn) Stanford Design School The Five Core Elements of Design Thinking (Visual + Definition) “What is Design Thinking and Why Is It So Popular?” Podcast Ep. 12: “The Importance of Embedding a DevOps Skill Set into Your Team” Chris’s Book Pick The Birth of Loud: Leo Fender, Les Paul, and the Guitar-Pioneering Rivalry That Shaped Rock ’n’ Roll, by Ian S. What are your tipping habits? Do you give more depending on the level of service you get? What if I told you that your tipping habits actually have more to do with your abundance and wealth than you think? I learned my tipping habits years ago from my parents who were very generous tippers – no matter what the level of service was. And this stuck with me up until this point and I know it’s only helped boost my success (and in general, my happiness). “The way you tip someone is not a reflection of the job they’ve done, it’s a reflection of how you feel about money.” Let’s not forget about all the happiness/time-saving after effects of tipping well. At restaurants, because I’m known for my generosity, I’m seated faster, get better service and tend to get a lot of extras that other people don’t get. When I valet park (at least once a week), my car is always parked close and I’m able to get my parked even when the lot is full. When I’m generous, I’m saving both money and time, which leaves me happier and with better energy. So let’s try to shift your view of money (if it’s needed). If the service was bad, don’t use the lack of a tip as punishment. Instead, use it as an opportunity to show the particular person a different view of money. If they were having a really crappy day, wouldn’t an awesome tip help turn it around? YES! And what’s more, you’re sending a message to the universe that you have an abundance of money. Let’s take that one step further… when you tip well you’re actually boosting the economy. You pay more, but then the other person has more to spend, too. No matter which way you look at it, you create a ripple effect when you tip well. What kind of example could you set by showing others how abundant you are with everyone? Who can you inspire? I would love to hear all about your generous tipping habits! I am so excited to have my husband, Chris, on again! We’ve been asked a lot of questions such as: how do we work together day in and day out? How do we live our lives and what makes us happy? These conversations are so much fun for us and we love sharing the highs and lows of our lives so far. As you’ll soon realize, while we have our “dream” lives now, it didn’t start out that way. Let’s just say I didn’t even want to give Chris the time of day when we first met! Chris Fralic is one of the most intentional, genuine people I know when it comes to building relationships. He sees himself as a connection maker and works hard to ensure that he’s thinking long-term instead of simply transactional. On this episode of Real Relationships, Chris shares how he developed his emphasis on relationships, why it’s important for business builders, and how it applies to things like follow-up, email, and introductions. You’ll get a ton of value from this conversation with Chris. You’ve got to see relationships as long-term opportunities that stretch beyond one transaction. Too often in the business world, people network or connect with an aim to closing a deal or getting an introduction that will lead to a closed deal. But Chris Fralic has learned - sometimes the hard way - that relational opportunities he has now are something he needs to foster and develop over time because the transaction is not the only thing to consider. There may be interactions or benefits that come to both sides of a relationship in the future that won’t happen if the relationship is not taken seriously. Find out how Chris builds the real relationships that come back to him in great ways later, on this episode. How do you get around the icky factor that you often feel when building business relationships? We all know the feeling. Someone asks for an introduction to someone we know - or we are meeting with someone who was introduced to us and there’s that “icky” feeling that comes from knowing the interaction is probably only aimed at gaining a pitch opportunity. Is it possible to get around that dynamic - and if so, how? My guest on this episode, Chris Fralic shares a handful of tips you’ll find helpful, so be sure you take the time to listen. Can you execute the right level of email responsiveness and still be authentic? There are so many automation tools for email these days, and for good reason. We all need to make the most of our time and responding to emails is not always one of our high-level tasks. But Chris Fralic says that everyone needs to know how to do email from a relational perspective if they are going to be a long-term success. On this episode of Real Relationships, Chris shares exactly what he means by that statement and how he applies it in his own busy life. Are you creating obligations for others in the introductions you make? It happens quite often that people hear a podcast or conversation about the importance of being of value to others by being a connector. But too often those novice connectors jump right in by making “obligated” introductions. If you aren’t sure what that means then you need to hear this conversation I had with Chris Fralic. He’s got some great tips for how you can introduce people in a way that graciously gives both sides an out. It’s a considerate step in making introductions that will position you as a considerate person in the minds of both parties. You don’t want to miss this one. Outline of this great episode [0:34] Chris Fralic - today’s guest on Real Relationships. [1:35] Where Chris’ passion for building great relationships comes from.
