What if you could design a career that gave you flexibility for your family, fulfillment in your work, and the freedom to follow your passions? That's exactly what Elyse Sheeler did when she created her private practice, Speaking Life: Speech Therapy and Wellness, in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin.Elyse is a speech-language pathologist who began her career in skilled nursing, inspired by her grandmother's journey with Alzheimer's. After years of working across medical, outpatient, and school settings, she started to crave more control over her time and the freedom to integrate her interests — particularly wellness and Myofunctional therapy into her work. When Elyse became a mom, her priorities shifted. Between long IEP meetings, school schedules, and a growing family, she began questioning if she could maintain her demanding school SLP job while being fully present at home. Her turning point came after her son's experience with a tongue-tie — a moment that ignited her passion for myofunctional therapy and holistic family wellness. Realizing how few local providers addressed these needs, she decided to build a practice where she could offer the kind of care she wished she'd had for her own family.Starting small, Elyse launched Speaking Life while still working part-time in the schools. One referral led to another, and soon she was running her own practice full-time. With support from the Start and Grow Your Private Practice Programs, she created systems, clarified her mission, and built a business that reflected both her values and her lifestyle. In this episode, we talk about how Elyse serves children and families through Speaking Life: Speech Therapy and Wellness, integrating speech-language pathology, Myofunctional therapy, and family wellness education. She also hosts the podcast Speaking Life into Motherhood, where she helps other moms find balance and purpose through mindful living and holistic health. In Today's Episode, We Discuss:Transitioned from full-time school SLP to private practice ownerFound her niche in Myofunctional therapy and holistic wellnessCreated a lifestyle practice that supports both her family and her purposeElyse's story is a reminder that private practice isn't just about leaving a job—it's about designing a life. By following her instincts, defining her “why,” and building a mission-centered practice, she created the freedom to be both the mom and clinician she always wanted to be.Want to build a private practice that gives you freedom, flexibility, and fulfillment—just like Elyse has? Welcome to episode #1010 of Thinking With Mitch Joel (formerly Six Pixels of Separation). What if the search for our "true selves" has been leading us away from who we actually need to become? That's the tension at the heart of Dr. Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic's work, a globally respected authority on people analytics, talent, leadership, and the Human–AI interface whose career spans ManpowerGroup, Deeper Signals, Meta Profiling, Columbia University, UCL, and decades of research that have shaped how organizations understand human behavior. His latest book, Don't Be Yourself: Why Authenticity Is Overrated (And What To Do Instead), challenges one of the most cherished modern beliefs - that success comes from projecting our raw, unfiltered selves - and instead argues that adaptability, reputational awareness, and a more evidence-based approach to identity lead to better outcomes for individuals, teams, and societies. He is also the author of Why Do So Many Incompetent Men Become Leaders?, I, Human, The Talent Delusion, and many others. In this conversation, we unpack how hyper-normalized ideas take root, why celebrity culture distorts our sense of what authenticity looks like, and how social media has gamified identity into a curated performance that misleads both the performer and the audience. He explains why leaders must balance sincerity with impression management, how hybrid work and return-to-office debates reveal deeper anxieties about trust and presence, and why intellectual curiosity may be the antidote to polarization in an era where algorithms reward tribalism. The discussion also explores the limits of self-perception, the psychology of reputation, the dangers of treating outliers as role models, and the pivotal role AI may play in counteracting human bias. Ultimately, Tomas argues that authenticity without responsibility collapses into narcissism, and that a more thoughtful, flexible, and socially attuned version of ourselves is not only possible, but necessary. Enjoy the conversation… Running time: 1:06:25. Hello from beautiful Montreal. Listen and subscribe over at Apple Podcasts. Listen and subscribe over at Spotify. This episode originally aired on April 5, 2021 (Episode 240), and I'm bringing it back because so many of you said it gave you the clarity you didn't know you needed. If you're feeling stuck in your career or wondering whether there's something more fulfilling out there for you, this conversation is worth revisiting. So many people come to me at a professional crossroads. On paper, things look fine — good job, steady paycheck — but inside, they're wrestling with harder questions: Is this what I'm meant to be doing? Where's the meaning? And what would it actually look like to feel passionate about my work? Finding your passion isn't about flipping a switch. It's about understanding how you got here, untangling what's yours from what you were told to want, and designing a career that aligns with who you are now. In this episode, we're talking about how to get unstuck, how to reflect with purpose, and how to move forward, even when it feels like there are a thousand possible directions and no clear right answer. Episode Breakdown: 00:00 Getting Unstuck When You Have Too Many Options 05:12 Career Crossroads: How to Navigate Paralysis and Indecision 11:08 Life Design vs. Job Search: Shifting How We Think About Career 18:39 Finding Your Passion by Reflecting on the Past 27:26 The “Quarter-Life” Crossroads: Making Sense of How You Got Here 30:12 Burnout or Misalignment? How to Tell the Difference 34:45 The 10-Year Vision Exercise That Brings Long-Term Clarity 36:44 Why Big Career Decisions Shouldn't Happen During Burnout We cover how early life influences, past roles, and even burnout shape your career path, often without you realizing it. And we'll help you figure out whether you need a new job or a new perspective on the one you already have. What if you stopped pushing through and started getting curious? What would it feel like to move toward a career that fits you, not just the version of you who started years ago? If you're feeling ready to find your passion and design a career that actually fits, I'd love to support you as you start taking clear, doable steps. Through my Career Clarity Intensive, you can have clarity and confidence about the right next step for you, how to grow professionally and attain what you really want, and actualize the fullness of your potential in your career! The first step: join me for a free coaching call to design your next chapter. Here's the link to register. And if you want to keep this conversation going beyond the podcast, come find me on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube. I'm always sharing tools and insights to help you build a life and career that reflect your values and your worth. And if something from this episode sparked something for you, I'd love to hear how you're making sense of your path. Let's talk! xoxo, Dr. Lisa Marie BobbyGrowing Self

This week, in episode 266, David C. Barnett, Jay Goltz, and Kate Morgan wrestle with one of the trickiest challenges for business owners: how to give employees room to grow without losing sight of the company's mission. David points out that every business is on its way to obsolescence unless it deliberately evolves—and one way to do that, he says, is by letting employees experiment and try new things. That approach, Jay says, is exactly what led to his building a furniture business. Plus: Kate and Jay agree that while many aspects of running a business can be stressful, nothing has been more stressful for them than the period when their businesses were growing the fastest. And the owners react to a Reddit post from someone who has found that hiring employees has created more problems than it has solved. “Is this just what having employees is like?” the owner writes. “Please tell me I'm not the only one losing my mind.”

Drawing on their personal journeys, they reflect on the persistence of gender stereotypes, the experience of imposter syndrome, and the importance of building confidence through knowledge, hard work, and supportive networks.Their conversation emphasises that leadership is not about following a rigid master plan but about vision, long-term investment, and trust in one's capabilities. Both speakers highlight the transformative role of mentorship and sponsorship, the value of inclusive groups in attracting more women into urology, and the importance of respecting individuality rather than conforming to stereotypes. Practical advice for young urologists includes taking small steps, embracing networking opportunities, and being unafraid to volunteer or step outside of one's comfort zone. For more EAU podcasts, please go to your favourite podcast app and subscribe to our podcast channel for regular updates: Apple Podcasts, Spotify, EAU YouTube channel.
