Big machine learning models can identify plant species better than any human, write passable essays, beat you at a game of Starcraft 2, figure out how a photo of Tobey Maguire and the word 'spider' are related, solve the 60-year-old 'protein folding problem', diagnose some diseases, play romantic matchmaker, write solid computer code, and offer questionable legal advice. Humanity made these amazing and ever-improving tools. So how do our creations work? In short: we don't know. Today's guest, Chris Olah, finds this both absurd and unacceptable. Over the last ten years he has been a leader in the effort to unravel what's really going on inside these black boxes. As part of that effort he helped create the famous DeepDream visualisations at Google Brain, reverse engineered the CLIP image classifier at OpenAI, and is now continuing his work at Anthropic, a new $100 million research company that tries to "co-develop the latest safety techniques alongside scaling of large ML models". Links to learn more, summary and full transcript. Despite having a huge fan base thanks to his explanations of ML and tweets, today's episode is the first long interview Chris has ever given. It features his personal take on what we've learned so far about what ML algorithms are doing, and what's next for this research agenda at Anthropic. His decade of work has borne substantial fruit, producing an approach for looking inside the mess of connections in a neural network and back out what functional role each piece is serving. Among other things, Chris and team found that every visual classifier seems to converge on a number of simple common elements in their early layers - elements so fundamental they may exist in our own visual cortex in some form. They also found networks developing 'multimodal neurons' that would trigger in response to the presence of high-level concepts like 'romance', across both images and text, mimicking the famous 'Halle Berry neuron' from human neuroscience. While reverse engineering how a mind works would make any top-ten list of the most valuable knowledge to pursue for its own sake, Chris's work is also of urgent practical importance. Machine learning models are already being deployed in medicine, business, the military, and the justice system, in ever more powerful roles. The competitive pressure to put them into action as soon as they can turn a profit is great, and only getting greater. But if we don't know what these machines are doing, we can't be confident they'll continue to work the way we want as circumstances change. Before we hand an algorithm the proverbial nuclear codes, we should demand more assurance than "well, it's always worked fine so far". But by peering inside neural networks and figuring out how to 'read their minds' we can potentially foresee future failures and prevent them before they happen. Artificial neural networks may even be a better way to study how our own minds work, given that, unlike a human brain, we can see everything that's happening inside them - and having been posed similar challenges, there's every reason to think evolution and 'gradient descent' often converge on similar solutions. Among other things, Rob and Chris cover: * Why Chris thinks it's necessary to work with the largest models * What fundamental lessons we've learned about how neural networks (and perhaps humans) think * How interpretability research might help make AI safer to deploy, and Chris? response to skeptics * Why there's such a fuss about 'scaling laws' and what they say about future AI progress Get this episode by subscribing to our podcast on the world?s most pressing problems and how to solve them: type 80,000 Hours into your podcasting app. Producer: Keiran Harris Audio mastering: Ben Cordell Transcriptions: Sofia Davis-Fogel

Chris Tay is a successful serial entrepreneur who made his riches in restaurant supply chain solutions and consumer packaged goods businesses in Asia, mostly mainland China. He has been hustling hard since 1994, so he has an extremely long resume. He started at least four businesses and led sales efforts at pan-Asian conglomerates, such as 康师傅 Kang Shi Fu and 伊利 Yili. Soon after graduating university in Texas in 1992, he started Singapore's first handmade burger restaurant chain modeled after Johnny Rockets in the US. He sold that business a few years later for a few million dollars. Then he caught the Internet wave in the 90s, and started an online company to help Japanese hot-bath businesses buy supplies. He later sold that business for a few million dollars. Later, he headed up sales for various consumer packaged goods conglomerates such as 康师傅 and 伊利. He is currently working on his new consumer packaged goods startup. Chris is originally from Malaysia. Despite being ethnically Chinese, he didn't know the language before entering the China startup scene. But through dedicated and rigorous training, he now speaks like a local. Besides being wildly successful, Chris is humble, generous, and full of wisdom, as you will hear from this episode. My friend Mike Yan interviewed Chris in Shanghai. Mike is in the venture capital space in China. They discussed: the idea of the more people you know, the luckier you get; why he wants to treat all his business acquaintances with humility; what it's like to build a B2B internet startup in late nineties; how he adapted to the local business culture in order to win businesses from the Japanese; and much more. Going into 2020, one in seven adults in the United States experienced a substance use disorder. As of June 2020, the CDC said that 13 percent of adults reported an increase in their use of substances to cope with the stress of the pandemic, with this statistic accompanied by a tremendous increase in overdose deaths. As a result, we feel it is important to dive into the difficult topic of substance use disorders and their impact, not only on the individual but also on the family system, and examine what the recovery process looks like from both perspectives as well. To help us do this is local counsellor, Christopher Crawford, who has over 20 years' therapeutic experience working with adolescents, young adults, and adults with mental health and substance abuse issues. After going through a massive business failure almost 10 years ago, Chris decided to give real estate a try. He's always been attracted to this industry because of the many different things one gets to learn from it and how there are no limits on personal growth. Chris started doing really well as an agent.  But eventually, he found that the work that needed to be done was taking too much of his time. He started to lose flexibility and freedom which are some of the main reasons why he went into this business in the first place.  This led him to build his own brokerage in the summer of 2011. Unfortunately, things didn't go as well as he had planned. From a profitability perspective, he knew he worked harder but he realized that he made less money now than he did a couple of years back.  He ended up literally burning his business down to the ground and started to implement Gary Keller's MREA model.  Today, Chris is the founder of Watters International Realty which is one of the most respected teams in Central Texas.  In this episode, we talked about how Chris took his business to the next level and who are the first three key hires to hitting $1M in annual GCI. Creating a Culture of Transgender Inclusion in Sports — Episode 092

Today is the first day of Pride Month, yet, as we kick off this month-long celebration designed to achieve equal justice and equal opportunity for the LGBTQ+ community, we continue to see many states introducing harmful legislation aimed at preventing transgender youth from participating in sports. At NRPA, it’s our position that being recognized as the gender with which you identify is a basic human right. Meaning that for the purposes of recreational sports, youth should be allowed to participate in the gender with which they identify. Last month, NRPA published guidance to empower park and recreation professionals to build more inclusive sport environments that welcome all youth into programming. Today we look forward to building on this guidance through a conversation with someone who is doing incredible work in this space.   We are thrilled to welcome Chris Mosier (he/him) to the podcast today. Chris is a trailblazing athlete, coach and the founder of TransAthlete.com. He is a six-time member of Team USA, and in 2015 he became the first openly transgender man to represent the United States in international competition. He was the catalyst for change for the International Olympic Committee policy on transgender athletes and has been called “the man who changed the Olympics” by the BBC and New York Magazine. He is also a two-time National Champion and the first transgender athlete to compete in the Olympic Trials in any sport in a category different than their sex assigned at birth. Chris is a go-to source for policy and information on transgender inclusion in sports, and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome him to the show today. Tune in to the full episode below to learn more about Chris’s story, what all of these ‘firsts’ mean to him, and why his motto is, “Be who you needed when you were younger.” You’ll also learn: How we can apply the same principles used in changing the International Olympic Committee’s policy on trans athletes for adult and youth recreational sports. Why Chris started Transathlete.com, a resource for students, athletes, coaches and administrators about trans inclusion in athletics. What advice he would give to park and recreation professionals trying to create cultures of inclusion in their communities where everyone can thrive. How to take action against recently proposed bills in many states that would prevent transgender youth from participating in sports. Why we need to consider people and our facilities when implementing more inclusive policies. What Chris has planned for Pride Month, and more! This despite the fact that losing an unborn child is a grieving process in the same way as losing any other child. Chris and I discuss: How Chris originally set up Miscarriage for Men to throw himself into something positive off the back of his wife's recent miscarriage. He realised very quickly that there was nothing for men in dealing with the grief involved in coping with a family miscarriage. Why Chris believes part of the stigma around miscarriage is that people just don't know how to talk about it. The way in which the unresolved grief impacts many other parts of a Dads life and can go on for decades. Financial advisors will tell you that playing the long game and investing in stocks is the path to financial independence. But here’s the secret that they don’t tell you — very few financial advisors ever achieve true financial independence themselves. Today we speak with Anti-Financial Advisor, Chris Miles, who teaches entrepreneurs and professionals how they can find financial independence by getting their money to work for them. We open our conversation by diving into Chris’s past as a financial advisor and how he discovered the flawed assumptions underpinning this industry. We then explore the link between cash flow and financial independence before discussing what it means to be caught in the rat race. With incredible openness, Chris shares his story of how he found financial independence before a few critical mistakes and the 2008 recession forced him back into the rat race. Chris Douglas is a Montana-based photographer and creative director who is one of the most sought-after visual storytellers in the American West. Chris is a go-to photographer for iconic brands such as Filson, Stetson, and Mossy Oak, and his editorial work appears regularly in publications including Modern Huntsman and Men’s Journal. In a world flooded with iPhone photography and armchair creatives, Chris’s work stands out as being artistically stunning and of the highest professional caliber. - When viewing Chris’s work, most people would assume that he’s been laser focused on photography for his entire career. But even though his interest in photography began at age ten, the first half of his career was spent in front of the lens-- first as an international model for brands such as Versace, and then as a successful television actor. But life moving between LA, New York, and Milan was not a fit with his love of the outdoors, so Chris eventually moved to Montana, where he continued his life-long passion for hunting and adventure. Then, as you’ll hear him describe, Chris was severely injured in a horse accident, which became the catalyst that led him to leave acting behind and devote his full energies to photography. - Those of you who are long-time listeners know that I spend a lot of time preparing for each of these interviews, but, as you’ll hear, I was completely surprised by much of Chris’s story. Chris is unbelievably humble and keeps a low profile, so I was honored that he was open to sharing his full journey with me on the podcast. We started out chatting about his upbringing in east Tennessee and his tight-knit, supportive family that he credits with being the foundation for all of his success. Then we discussed his fascinating career trajectory-- from international model to soap opera star to television host to photographer. We had a great conversation about his Native American ancestry and how Native culture has influenced his work and family’s life in Montana. - Chris’s story is both entertaining and instructive-- he is a wonderful example of how life’s unexpected twists and turns can lead people on the most interesting journeys. And how hard work, humility, creativity, and professionalism can result in a one-of-a-kind life and career. Chris's Bio: Chris Prefontaine is the best-selling author of Real Estate on Your Terms: Create Continuous Cash Flow Now, Without Using Your Cash or Credit. He's also the founder of SmartRealEstateCoach.com and the Smart Real Estate Coach Podcast. Chris has been in real estate for over 25 years. His experience includes the construction of over 100 single-family and duplex homes (mostly in the 1990's and selectively to date), has owned a Realty Executives Franchise (Massachusetts 1994-2000) as broker/owner which maintained high per-agent standards and eventually sold to Coldwell Banker in 2000. The 2000's included coaching ½ million and higher REALTORs® in order to scale & automate their business throughout the US and Canada. He also participated (and still does selectively) in doing condo conversions (multi-family homes to condos) and “raise the roof” projects (converting single-family ranches to colonials in growth neighborhoods). Chris has been a big advocate of constant education and participates regularly in high-end mastermind groups, as well as consults with private mentors. He runs his own buying and selling businesses with his family team, which buys 2-5 properties monthly, so they're in the trenches every single week. They also help clients do the same thing around the country. Chris and his family team have done over 80 million in real estate transactions. They mentor, coach, consult, and actually partner with students around the country (by application only) to do exactly what they do. Zach's Bio: Zach Beach is an Amazon Best-Selling Author of The New Rules of Real Estate Investing and revised edition of Real Estate On Your Terms. He has been an authority in real estate for 7 years now and has personally completed hundreds of real estate transactions and has mentored investors to complete thousands of transactions. At the age of 25, Zach decided to leave the world of bartending and personally training and jump into the family business. Now he is an equal partner and runs the acquisitions department, focusing on helping sellers accomplish their goal of selling their property. If Zach is not working, you will find enjoying the outdoors or spending time with his wife Kayla and two kids Remi and Bellamy. His passion for family and business is what keeps him motivated and excited to take on each day. What you will learn in this episode: How the terms niche is booming, even during the global pandemic, and what that means for real estate investors looking for new opportunities Why the terms niche is ideal for being recession-resistant because terms deals are flexible and easy to pivot Why choosing a niche you can get behind and stick with and joining a community who has done what you want to do is the key to success in real estate investing Why you should take action, sustain your momentum, and look for golden opportunities even during the crisis How the Wicked Smart Community has been a powerful motivator, source of inspiration and resource for its members through the pandemic Why Chris, Zach and their family team decided to break into real estate coaching, and how it has impacted their investing business Why much of the coaching the Smart Real Estate Coach team does lies outside traditional real estate but has a major impact on students' success Why being in the right place mentally, physically and emotionally is critically important for your success Why the formula for success is: Be honest with yourself and get clear on where you are Decide where you want to go Identify the core points blocking you right now from getting there Take massive action Work with a coach on your process What the difference between a mentor and a coach is, and why a coach will take you farther than a mentor will Resources: Get a strategy call with the Smart Real Estate Coach team: www.SmartRealEstateCoach.com/action Additional resources: Real Estate on Your Terms by Chris Prefontaine SmartRealEstateCoachPodcast.com/webinar SmartRealEstateCoachPodcast.com/ebook SmartRealEstateCoach.com/QLS

In this episode of Movers & Shakers Josh & Gino interview Chris Petrakis. Topics touched on include:   How having skin in the game gave Chris the push needed to do his first deal Why Chris is doing multifamily after successful career Chris covers how he shifted from working hard for his money to having his money having work hard for him How Chris was able to go from educating and kicking tires to implementing and getting results.   Chris’s Bio:   Chris Petrakis is originally from Gulf Breeze, Florida but currently resides in Birmingham, Michigan with his beautiful wife and two young daughters. After graduating with a degree in Marketing from Lipscomb University, Chris began his 22-year career in Medical Sales; currently, he is an Aortic Field Sales Associate specializing in Endovascular Aortic Aneurysm repair working with Vascular and Cardiothoracic Surgeons for W. L. Gore & Associates.  Chris started his real estate investing career in 2002 when he bought his first of five rental properties in the Virginia Beach area.  In the meantime, several corporate relocations for career advancement opportunities took him to Baltimore, Boston, Washington, DC and finally to the suburbs of Detroit, where they moved to August of 2019. Moving to his wife’s hometown has surprisingly given Chris the chance to make a leap of faith by committing to multifamily investing. In December of 2019, four months after moving to Michigan, Chris decided to join the Jake and Gino community. It turns out that joining the group was the push he needed to begin his new venture in larger real estate investments. Two months after joining the Jake and Gino community, Chris closed on a value-add Quality Inn and Suites Hotel in February 2020.  Currently, he has his first 8-unit MF deal under contract in his home market of Birmingham, Michigan.  In addition to real estate investing, Chris and some of his business partners recently opened a speakeasy-style bar in the downtown Main Street section of Plymouth, MI, and he is also a part owner of the restaurant above the bar, Greek Islands Eatery, a family-owned operation. While he’s willing to entertain most any investment opportunity that comes his way, Chris believes he has found his passion in Multifamily Real Estate.

Today, joining me is Chris Ducker, who is a keynote speaker and author of two books. His first book, Virtual Freedom, he had traditionally published, his second book, the Rise of the Youpreneur, is self-published. He is known as a Virtual CEO and regarded as an authority on virtual staffing and personal outsourcing. Chris is here to talk about using a book to build your personal brand and your business. “For me, I believe that a book is one of the easiest and most important expert positioning strategies for anyone who wants to build a business based around their experience and expertise should act on - plain and simple.” This is the first action item he works on with coaching clients is to create and publish a book. He knew that authoring his book would bring him more business. The trick was to put all the information he had in his mind into one definitive guide. Currently, his book has over 1000 five-star reviews on Amazon and continues to create monthly sales every quarter. “We don’t give Virtual Freedom away, but we do pitch it as a great starting point for anyone who wants to learn how to work with virtual staff, and to learn how to hire support and run their business with a virtual team.” Chris considers his book a “tripwire product” to get the easy, low-dollar item out of someone to get them warmed up to his business. “I totally agree with qualifying a prospective customer.” Chris recommends not to work on your weaknesses when building your personal brand, but to delegate them to others to get the job done. “Delegate your weakness and work with your strengths. Do the stuff that you’re good at but do it in a way that is uniquely your own path.” Completing this process with the right amount of transparency will build a community of people around you that will consume your content. Listen in to find out why Chris put his face on the cover of his second book, why he self-published his second book, and his mistakes when publishing his first book.
