TCC Podcast #442: Hand Copying to Learn Writing Skills with Derek Johanson

The Copywriter Club Podcast

What's the best way to learn copywriting? Could it be hand-writing sales pages and other great copy from expert copywriters like Mel Martin and Gary Bencivenga? My guest for this episode of The Copywriter Club Podcast is Derek Johanson, the writer who created CopyHour, a program designed to help you learn to write by hand-copying great copy. We also talked about getting affiliates, mentoring, and a lot more. If you want to improve your copywriting skills, be sure to listen to this episode (and click here to learn about the CopyHour program). Click the play button below, or scroll down for a full transcript. Stuff to check out: The CopyHour Course Gary Bencivenga's Olive Oil Sales Page The Copywriter Club Facebook Group The Copywriter Underground Full Transcript: Rob Marsh: What's the best way to learn copywriting? Would it surprise you that handwriting great copy is possibly the most successful technique? This is The Copywriter Club Podcast. There must be something like a thousand different courses for copywriters to learn how to write copy. And probably another thousand more that talk about content—as if it's a separate skill set. And there are probably an additional thousand more free videos in places like YouTube that promise to teach you the skills you need to succeed as a copywriter. With that many choices out there, you would think the world would be crammed full of phenomenally skilled copywriters, but it's not. This should tell us that not all courses or workshops that promise to teach writers how to write copy and content actually work. So what does work? Is there a course out there that many copywriters talk about or recommend when it comes to writing engaging sales or conversion copy? And it turns out there is. One course recommended by people like Dan Ferrari, Chris Orzechowski, Elise Savaki, and hundreds of others is called CopyHour. Unlike many other courses, CopyHour focuses on handwriting great copy. Does that really work? I asked Derek Johanson, the writer who created CopyHour to be my guest for this episode of The Copywriter Club Podcast to answer questions like… why does hand-writing teach copy structure and pacing where other methods don't appear to have the same level of success?  We talked about the genesis and evolution of the CopyHour program and what it includes… things like writing great offers, writing headlines and bullets, and how Derek has improved the course over time. Now I want to be upfront about something… I came to this interview as a bit of a skeptic when it comes to hand-writing copy. I'm all in on studying good examples of emails, sales pages, and other good copy. In fact, I have a swipe file with more than 500 different sales pages that I've saved to study… those swipes are part of The Copywriter Underground… But handwriting? I wasn't so sure… I think Derek may have changed my mind. And if you're a skeptic on this topic, you may want to hear what he says about the science of handwriting and learning. If you're convinced by the end of this episode that you want to know more, you can go to thecopywriterclub.com/copyhour to find out more about Derek's course. It's open for new members the week this episode goes live, so check it out today… thecopywriterclub.com/copyhour Before we get to my interview with Derek, this episode is brought to you by The Copywriter Underground. You've heard me talk about how we've recently rebuilt The Underground dashboard to make finding the ideas and insights you need easier. But as I started recreating this new dashboard, it occurred to me that no one has time to watch more than 70 different workshops—even for those workshops that help you gain the skills and strategies you need to build your business. So I've taken more than 30 of those workshops on finding clients, having sales calls, using A.I., building authority on LinkedIn, and dozens of others… and I've created playbooks that break down the ideas in the workshops into...

Chris Orzechowski is the Founder of West Egg Agency, an X Ads agency that helps brands acquire new customers using X. As an email copywriter, he helps eCommerce brands grow their revenue using email automation. Chris is also the author of Make It Rain and Scale While You Sleep. In this episode… Advertising on X isn't new, yet many brands avoid it in favor of platforms like Meta and Google that produce faster results. However, these platforms are becoming increasingly saturated and competitive, making X a cost-effective and untapped alternative. How can you optimize your existing ads for X? Brands that haven't achieved results on X likely haven't targeted or engaged with enough followers. X Ads trailblazer Chris Orzechowski recommends targeting brands with your ideal customer profile and creating follower look-alikes to convert their followers into your customers. This requires developing creative copy to rank for specific keywords. While you can reuse high-performing content from Meta on X, you must modify the copy to align with X's requirements, like character limits and parameters for other creative mediums like video.  Tune in to this week's episode of The Digital Deep Dive as Aaron Conant invites Chris Orzechowski, the Founder of West Egg Agency, to discuss launching ad campaigns on X. Chris shares X's upcoming integrations, the platform's profitability, and how to structure an ad budget for X.

I often talk about how there is an entrepreneurial ceiling that many business owners struggle to get past. They are able to get their business up and running, but inevitably hit a financial plateau and find themselves working too hard, not having the freedom they want and still unable to invest in the resources they need to grow bigger. It's often where business owners get stuck, start to resent their business and have to make a tough decision - do they continue on this path, or do they give up and go get a job. Today, on the podcast I sit down with Chris Orzechowski to talk about how to bust through that ceiling and the mindset it takes to become a 7 figure business.

Here at The Bottom Line CPA, we're always celebrating our wins, big and small – and today, we're celebrating our first 100 episodes of The Pay Play Profit Podcast! If you think running a podcast is easy, well, it's not. Launching a podcast is just half of the battle. The other half is making sure we're releasing something valuable each week, and that requires a lot of dedication. That's why it pays to have a partner who can keep us accountable. As they say, “it takes a village” – and that includes producing a podcast too. We believe partnerships fuel transformation. In this episode, we recall our top five episodes of all-time as well as our personal favorites. We're also sharing some tips if you're thinking about doing a podcast. One of the things we learned is that you don't have to release an episode every day. Whether you do it every week or twice each month, consistency is key! If you're looking to truly connect and move the needle for someone, then maybe podcasting is worth a try. At the end of the day, it's a profit decision. And as what we always mention here over and over – every decision is a profit decision, and profit is measured in time, energy, and money. In this episode, you will hear: Why it's helpful to pay for accountability Tips in launching a podcast Why the first seven days of downloads is the most important Our top five episodes of all time Our vision for this podcast in the future Subscribe and Review Have you subscribed to our podcast? I'm particularly excited about the timing of this episode, as it's airing mere weeks after the birth of Chris's second son. Not to mention that Chris and I have worked together for a long time… so I have a unique perspective into his evolution. He's proof you don't need an MBA or formal business training to become a CEO – with the right mindset (and recognizing what brings you energy vs draining it) you can create AND climb up your own success ladder. Listen now. Can't-Miss Moments From This Episode:#CEOlyfe may look cool in your IG bio, but there's a big difference between being the CEO of a one-person company and having to meet payroll and manage staff. Here's how Chris approaches that shift in perspective…   True or False: the CEO is the big boss and has complete control over every aspect of their business. I mean, it could be true… if you want to lose your mind trying to steer the ship AND fix the engine AND serve the food AND…  Having an online course is like having a cash cow, right? Wrong: Chris breaks down why once you launch a course you can't just sit back, do nothing, and wait for money to rain down. You hit your goal! Birds sing, confetti drops, problems disappear, and all is right in the world. The reality is more like… new level, new devil, so better make sure you pick a good one. Chris and I break down how to do exactly that.  What if “work” could simply be people getting together to create something cool? Chris shares his vision for the future of business in the age of remote work … and I think you're gonna love it (especially since we've already proven it works. This ain't theory!)This one is jam-packed full of advice. Don't miss out - listen now!Chris' Bio:Chris Orzechowski is the founder of Orzy Media, an email marketing agency for top online brands. Often business moves in ways they didn't predict when we spoke a couple of years ago. And we're doing it again this week. Chris Orzechowski is our guest for this episode of the Copywriter Club podcast, and as you'll see Chris has a very different business than the one he talked about when we interviewed him before. Rob:  But before we jump into this interview, this podcast is sponsored by the Copywriter Think Tank, that's our mastermind for copywriters and other marketers who want to think outside the box. Wow, we're using a cliché to talk about thinking outside the box, that's so inside the box. But, if you want to build new offers and revenue streams in your business, then the Copywriter Think Tank is the kind of place that might just be for you. So Kira, you asked me this last week, I'm going to ask you, why do you think the think tank helps copywriters experience real results? Kira:  Yeah. What comes to my mind first is that we help copywriters go from feeling like a business owner and acting like a business owner and thinking like a business owner to feeling, thinking, acting like an entrepreneur. And we've talked about this frequently with our accelerator program where you can shift from a freelancer mindset to a business owner mindset. But once we're in the think tank, and we're working very closely with the copywriters in that room and they're surrounded by 25 other copywriters who are ambitious and building businesses and restructuring models and figuring out how to do it in a way that works for them,

Just in case you don't know, I'm Ray Wood and I'm a real estate agent from Melbourne Victoria living on a lake about 2 hours north of Toronto Ontario Canada. It's been a cold blast here at the cottage in the last couple of months where we have been in semi-isolation and various stages of lockdown for almost a year. The month of February is testing us because there's this weather effect called the polar vortex that brings with it arctic cold temperatures like minus 30 Celcius and feet of snow. But, fortunately, the boathouse is keeping us warm thanks to a wood fire we installed last year and some incredible spray insulation that keeps in most of the warmth. The boathouse has been a fun project and it's still a work in progress that will take me a bit longer to complete. Personally, this last year has been an amazing time. I feel I have better focus and direction. I feel like I have more drive and energy.  In the last 12 months, I have completely overhauled Bestagents to a digital marketing platform and with the amazing resources of Jigglar and LockedON, a steady stream of new members are coming on board while they can still get the heavily discounted founding members deal. My real estate funnel marketing model is working like a well-oiled machine and let me share what I've learned about the art of funnel marketing in the past year. There are 3 stages to a good funnel; Attract, nurture and convert.   The 16 digital assets including eBooks and autopilot lead generators we have created at Bestagents do most of the heavy lifting when it comes to attracting with the impressive resources of Jigglar pitching in by pumping out fresh professional-grade content on a daily basis. LockedON's new version 2 is turning heads and playing a critical role nurturing and converting contacts to listings and sales with the help of our digital pre-listing kit and lots of pre-written emails ready in the system. In fact, that's a perfect segway into this week's interview which is all about the power of email marketing and some awesome tips to make sure your messages are connecting with your contacts in all three stages of your funnel. My guest for this episode is email writing and marketing expert Chris Orzechowski, and the timing around the release of this episode is highly relevant as the Australian government finds itself in something of a Mexican standoff with Facebook. Basically, Canberra wants Facebook to pay for the news it strips and recycles. Facebook have said "I don't think so" and have started deleting content from any Australian Facebook page that faintly smells like it offers any kind of news. In fact, today's email from Chris (and as soon as we met, I signed up to get his daily emails) talks about this and he warns, you can't build your brand on quicksand which means don't rely on Facebook or any social platform for that matter to be there tomorrow. Chris says that's all the more reason to build solid relationships with great email marketing and I couldn't agree more. You are your brand, not some tri-color logo or pretty font. But here's the critically important thing: Marketing you doesn't mean talking about you.  Want to write better emails to attract, nurture and convert more contacts? Right now, you can download Chris' eBook, Make It Rain for free. Can I suggest you head over to https://themakeitrainbook.com/ (www.themakeitrainbook.com) and get your copy? Here are just some of the things Chris shares in his book which is a brilliant read by the way: How to segment your email list properly, so you can send the right offer to the right person at the right time. Why emails with great copy out-convert fancy, HTML emails… every time! How to make your emails stand out from all your competitors… and how to make people fall in love with the emails you send. 3 email campaigns that will work for you every day… even while you sleep! My Simplified Life
The Secret Behind Writing Captions & Emails with Brenna McGowan

My Simplified Life

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 8, 2020 37:09

Knowing how to write an email or caption that makes people want to hit reply is a magical gift. Copywriter magician Brenna McGowan is sharing the secrets behind what it takes to create engaging captions on social media and your emails. I truly love reading Brenna’s emails and want to reply to all of them. Brenna shares how she’s learned from her copywriting mentors, such as Laura Belgray, Chris Orzechowski, and Tarzan Kay. Grab your pen and paper because this episode is full of information and knowledge that you aren’t going to want to miss.   Let's talk about creating engaging captions and getting specific!  What we're talking about From Stay-At-Home Mom To Copywriter How To Write Engaging Emails How To Structure Your Emails From Stay-At-Home Mom To Copywriter Brenna wasn’t always a content and copywriter and she gives us the cliff notes version! She spent many years as a stay-at-home mom and when her daughter went to preschool, she started taking odd jobs she could do at home. Brenna dabbled in social media management, blogging, email marketing, and writing articles. She jokes about how she even traded her services for beautiful eyelashes when her friend started an aesthetician business.  After getting many compliments on the work she was doing for her friend, she considered starting a social media management business. Pretty quickly, she started doing a little bit of everything but felt that this wasn’t the right direction for her. Brenna too a look at the parts of what she was doing that she loved and decided to pivot to email copywriting. Brenna has now become submerged in the copywriting world and has branched out from email copywriting to include website and sales copy. Breanna says that it’s really any type of copy that sells or builds connection. How To Write Engaging Emails  Creating content can be tricky when you don’t know what to write, but Brenna tells us that it’s that personal touch in telling a story that engages your reader. Being yourself and being conversational is paramount to creating the like, know, and trust factor.  The first step in creating emails that will be opened is to be conversational in your copy. Next, talk about specifics in your email, not just a generic story, and show how it relates to your client. Brenna shares some examples with us on how we can build a connection. In response to Brenna’s recent IG Live, Laura Belgray said “the more specific we are, the more universal we are.” Sometimes we think that with our specifics, people aren’t going to relate to us and that people won’t want to go to a deeper level, so we leave things more generic. But the more specific we are, the more a reader can relate to our story. Brenna shares some ideas for weekly emails including a monthly podcast recap, which helps your reader recall an episode or go back and listen to the podcast or sending a weekly invitation to listen to your podcast or any other content that you are promoting. It reminds your people that you’re out there. How You Structure Your Content On Social Media And In Emails Your email content translates to social media as well. The biggest difference between email and social media is selling. The point of social media is to be social, you want to get people to comment, whereas in an email you can have a very direct call to action. This is why it is important to get off social media and into your inbox. Emails should be your selling ground. When structuring your content, mix things up. Discover what works for your reader and is resonating with them. You should also speak to your reader they way you speak in real life, such as using contractions. On social media, break up paragraphs, to make it easier to read and use emojis or all caps to bring attention to a line and draw the eye down your content. Once you start looking for stories, the ideas will start jumping out at you. Jot them down as they flow and reflect on the feelings they bring about.  You can then connect those points with your life and figure out how to apply a story to what you are already going to share. Are you sharing your real-life stories with your audience?
