Things That Shape Us

Welcome to the Things That Shape Us podcast. My name is Jonathan Wymer and I'm joined by James Gary to discuss a various range of subjects that are all related to one idea: How those things shape our lives. In this episode, James and I discuss ONE THING that shaped our lives. There is Spring, Summer, Fall, & Winter. With Summer being the wildest. There's much to be desired from the heat and humidity that plagues the Southeast Region and specifically the state of Georgia, but James and I share a few stories that help us cope with the insanity of it all. We stay weird, and even attempt to rewrite the history of cicadas in the process. Whether you enjoy the rays of the sun, or the sand between your toes, you're bound to disagree with us on this one.ANNOUNCEMENT IN EPISODE:Attention Scan, a science fiction novel by Jonathan Wymer & Joshua Messarge isON AMAZON AT A NEW PRICE! - $12.99 - Paperback -  Order your copy today!(Advertisement Music provided by Cody Glodfelter. Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis

Self-described "Complete Nature Boy," Rue McKenrick is today's guest. He takes us on a journey around the American Perimeter Trail. It was Rue's vision that spawned the idea and he is the one who is driving it forward. He is soon to return to the trail after an absence of six months. When he left it for a break–in October 2020–he had been out on the trail for over a year. Rue's hiking resume is extensive, including the Triple Crown and the John Muir Trail. But it is the APT that occupies his thought these days, as he works to realize his ambition. He's been shot at and had about 20 interactions with Law Enforcement while blazing this trail, so the difficulty of the mission should not be underestimated. If you'd like to learn more about the trail and about Rue, you can follow him on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/ruemckenrick/ and on the trail's website, at https://americanperimetertrailproject.weebly.com/ Katie Westling is learning a few harsh realities on the trail, though she was expecting them! Her honeymoon period is over and the real work of a thru-hike is now in front of her. Remember, you can follow her on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChEDoHA8w7RgCgs8MxuiIxA/videos With Summer coming, I'm taking a break from the main part of the podcast (apart from a monthly show plus my weekly interviews with Katie) and Ryan Hopkins will be taking my place as the presenter. Here, Ryan chats about his plans for the show and demonstrates how he is a ready-made temporary replacement for me. Don't forget, I'll be back in October full time. In the interim, you can reach out to Ryan at ryanh620@gmail.com or, of course, I'll always be happy to hear from any of you at steve@hikingradionetwork.com Larry Luxenburg's "Walking the Appalachian Trail" discusses some of the traditions and silliness of the trail from 25 years ago. Aquatic Mentors

Podcast Episode – Peter Tonkin Welcome to another episode of the Aquatic Mentors podcast. I am your host, Katrina van Eyk. In this episode I interview an industry professional who has dedicated his life to giving back to the sport that gave him so much. So please extend a big welcome to the podcast for Peter Tonkin. Peter began his journey in swimming as a youngster and showed promise as a Breaststroke swimmer. Under the watchful eye of coach, Harry Gallagher, Peter swam with well-known swimmers of the time including Olympic swimmer, Dawn Fraser. In 1964 Peter qualified to swim at the Tokyo Olympics winning a Bronze medal with his teammates for the medley relay. Peter also swam at the trails for the Mexico Olympics beating his rival in his pet event. The joy was short lived though as Peter's was called up for National Service the following day. After moving to Tasmania in 1979 Peter founded the Northern Suburbs Swimming Club at the Mowbray pool. After growing the club to be one of the largest swimming club in Tasmania Peter headed off to the Northern Territory where he spent 10 years teaching children of the indigenous communities to ‘Swim Fast'. Peter enjoyed getting the community involved in the children's swimming and using the older teenagers of the community as role models and teachers for the younger kids. His work in the indigenous communities resulted in him receiving an Order of Australia Medal in 2019. Peter is now back in Tasmania coaching and presenting aquatic courses as well as holding the role of President for ASCTA Tasmania. He still dedicates his time to swimming and building the industry.   Through today's episode Peter shares some great stories of his swimming journey, his career highlight of attending the Tokyo Olympics as well as his thoughts on swimming in Australia and where he see's swimming moving to in the future. Please share what inspiration you draw from Peter's interview on our Facebook page, Aquatic Mentors. I am on the lookout for more aquatic journeys to share. No matter how big or small you think your story is we can all learn something from your experience so contact me via my email: regionalswimclinics@outlook.com to book a interview. Keep a look out for a special episode on ASCTA trainers across Australia. With Summer on the way and Covid restrictions lifting, now is the best time to train your staff and have them Summer ready. I have also developed a short survey to help us understand the needs of swim schools when it comes to training your staff and new recruits. Check out the Facebook page – Aquatic Mentors to complete the survey and help us build a better service around your swim schools training needs. Now, let's jump in and find out more about Peter's journey in swimming.    Peter Tonkin LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ptonkin/ Katrina van Eyk's Contact Information: Aquatic Mentors - https://www.aquaticmentors.com.au/ Facebook - Aquatic Mentors Regional Swim Clinics - www.regionalswimclinics.com.au Email - info@regionalswimclinics.com.au Facebook - Regional Swim Clinics LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/katrina-van-eyk-261851124/

With Summer starting and news drying up a little in the heat, we managed to find some interesting things happening at the Apache Software Foundation and we try to find correlations with the Cloud Native Computing Foundation. After that, we discover that Robots actually won't be taking all our jobs... Who would have thought... The more things change, the more they stay the same..?     While the ranks have closed and the messaging is "everything continuing as usual, nothing to see here", things are apparently happening at the ASF with some top level people moving on. Since only the future can tell how (and even if) this will have any noticeable effect, we have a little discussion about software foundations in general. Aside from the ASF, we talk about the Linux Foundation and the CNCF who also have their role to play. One is still glad to be of service! Over the years, there has been more than a little bit of fear mongering going on about how robots and technology in general will destroy a lot of jobs. Institutions like the World Economic Forum has releases their views over the years and recently, Manpower group released a pretty pdf with their conclusions. Looking over it, we are really puzzled by certain conclusions, or rather predictions about how the geographical impact will be and have some fun about the types of jobs that will be affected. Fortunately, on the whole, the consensus seems to be that rather than decreasing the amount of jobs in the world, technological advances and automatism will actually increase the amount of people required to keep it all running smoothly. But "reskilling" and "upskilling" will be ever more important if you want to remain part of the "in demand" crowd! Today on the Podcast, Time to Clean House. With Summer just around the bend, and before all those mid-year reflections start rolling in, this week is an ideal time to talk about how to 'Spring Clean' your business and your relationships. Declutter any victim mindset, rethink your approach, and engage with your projects (and your people) more intentionally. So that you can look at what's working, what's not, and give yourself the space you need to go about doing things differently. Doing things, better, Dreamcatcher. Whether that's stopping procrastination, 10x-ing your productivity, getting back to the goals you'd set at the beginning of the year, giving up emotional eating, or learning to become a better boss — the invitation is to work "on" your business rather than "in" and to be "with" folks rather than "at" folks. And to trust that there's more than enough time to get it all done, EVEN IF you take a break. And that, sometimes, the best thing we can do is getaway for an in-person, immersive, planning retreat or VIP coaching day. And allow someone else's eyes and ears and hands to laser focus on what we need most: perspective, direction, and bandwidth. In this Episode We Talk About: The guilt-free vacation I cannot WAIT to take, Why it's time to get honest with yourself (radically honest), When it's a good idea to walk away and change your environment, How to give and receive constructive, collaborative feedback, The reason it's so, so important to stay Agile with your projects & tasks, Where you might want to rethink your workflow and refine your systems, What's a BIG bottleneck in my own podcasting creative process, How to command more respect, attention, as a leader or a team member, Why CYA corporate culture is old paradigm and how to lean in, The times I completely embarrassed myself in my 20's, Why rushing (even if you pull things off) always loses in the end, Where you can connect with me (online & offline) during our Spring Cleaning hiatus, Get Ready to Hear All The Behind-The-Scenes Stories & Insights. We're now at that weird time between show seasons. With Summer shows around the corner and most shows coming to an end, what sorta batshit crazy things are we going to be watching over the next month? That is the question. In the meantime, The Network UpFronts are done and it seems that the Red Wedding has come to Fox. The network almost killed all of their comedies. But at least Stiffler is coming to "Lethal Weapon" ... right? NEWS HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK: Clayne Crawford has been replaced by Seann William Scott for Season 3 of "Lethal Weapon." It's unclear what will happen to Riggs in the story, but Scott will come in as a new unruly cop character for Damon Wayans' Murtaugh to team up with. Will Ferrell and Molly Shannon will return as Cord and Tish to cover the Royal Wedding on HBO. It's titled "The Royal Wedding Live with Cord and Tish!" and will premiere May 19 at 7:30 pm. Jordan Peele will executive produce a new 10-episode nazi-hunting series for Amazon called "The Hunt." Set in the 1970s, the series "starts from a vaguely real-world premise—former Nazis living undercover in New York—and quickly gets TV-show-over-the-top with it, suggesting that the “hundreds” of secret Germans are plotting the rise of a “Fourth Reich” in the heart of the Big Apple." According to Entertainment Weekly, "Arrested Development's" 16-episode fifth season will be split into two halves, with one premiering May 29 and the other coming by the end of the year. Netflix is getting in on the horror anthology trend with a new series, "Guillermo del Toro Presents 10 After Midnight." According to Variety, Del Toro will serve as executive producer on the series, and reportedly wants to write and direct select “equally sophisticated and horrific” episodes himself; the rest will come from writers and filmmakers personally selected by the director. "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." has been renewed for a sixth season.  According to AV Club, "the show will return for a 13-episode run next summer, most likely giving viewers a nice gap between the May release of Avengers 4 and the show’s season premiere. This way, half of the cast can still be obliterated and then resurrected without undercutting whatever the movie does to pull it off—which we’re all guessing involves time travel, right?" Batwoman will make her debut in CW's next Superhero crossover event. This will be the first time any of the "Arrow"-related shows will be making a direct connection to the Batman universe. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Epix has just ordered 10 episodes of "Pennyworth," a show dedicated to Batman’s butler Alfred when he first began working for Bruce Wayne’s father. The show will emphasize Alfred’s past as a former British SAS officer living in 1960s London, so it will be as far removed from the classic Batman mythology as possible. DC Universe announced a new 13-episode live action series for the streaming service based on "Doom Patrol." A press release from Warner Bros. says "Doom Patrol" will be about a team of super-powered people who have all been scarred and traumatized by various tragedies until someone known as The Chief comes along and enlists them in a mission to investigate 'the weirdest phenomena in existence.'" NOTEWORTHY CANCELLATIONS:Syfy has canceled "The Expanse."CBS: "Kevin Can Wait," "Scorpion," "Superior Donuts" NBC: "Great News," "Rise," "Taken" ABC: "Alex, Inc.," "The Crossing," "Deception," "Designated Survivor," "Quantico," "Kevin (Probably) Saves the World," "Marvel's Inhumans"FOX: "The Exorcist," "Lucifer," "The X-Files" (but there'll be more "Prison Break," apparently?) ABC also passed on "The Greatest American Hero" reboot. The CW canceled their "Supernatural" spinoff series "The Wayward Sisters." In 1992, the heavily popular Sailor Moon came out and we review it hard (1:57-end).     Podcast episodes live on Twitch and Mixer @BowlingJD Sundays at 12:00 EST...most times Twitter: @BowlingJD, @PowerCordGaming, @ConsoleKev            @TorXtraprox, @MightyHiki, @Fullmetal_lax YouTube: Moosen Spiel and PowerCord and Console Kev Send all questions to dieschlachten@gmail.com or to twitter @BowlingJD   2017 Animator Dorm Project: https://www.generosity.com/fundraising/2017-animator-dormitory-project

With Summer at the hospital, I am alone in studio for this episode of the podcast. The topic is New Years resolutions and goals. "Aimlessness is a vice, and such a drifting must not continue for those who would steer clear of catastrophe and destruction" - James Allen Setting goals keeps us from aimlessly wasting our time. Take some time to set some goals that will stretch you and will help you grow and develop as a person.
