The Gault Family's Alaskan Nightmare on NCL

The Joy of Cruising Podcast

Send us a textHello, passionate cruisers! This is Paul and this week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast, I present to you something quite different than what you are used to hearing from me. It's a cruise news story—an absolutely amazing one. First, let me welcome to the show Cailyn. Joshua is an entrepreneur in Tulsa, Oklahoma who is a central figure in said cruise news story, and as a busy entrepreneur was not able to join us. I don't normally cover cruise news. I leave that up to others who are renown and much better than I am about covering that sort of thing. However, Cailyn and her family's story transcends cruise news. It was covered extensively worldwide by mainstream media. Besides, one topic I do like to bring to the cruising community are human interest stories—and the Gault's story is a human-interest tale on steroids. Let me summarize before I bring on Cailyn to give us the real deal: In July 2024, Cailyn and her family of 9 embarked on Norwegian Encore for a family reunion cruise to Alaska. In total, 16 relatives were on the trip at a total cost of $30,000. Joshua and his immediate family, wife Cailyn, six children, and his 78-year-old mother-in-law, Sharron, went on an excursion which I'm sure many of you who have cruised to Alaska recall fondly—a Lumberjack show in Ketchikan. Cailyn and family did the right thing in that they chose an excursion offered by the cruise line. (I always recommend on various Facebook cruise groups that's it's best to choose an excursion offered by the cruise line versus an independent excursion because cruise line excursions come with a promise to never leave the port without you…) Upon the end of the Lumberjack show, Cailyn and family went to board the shuttle bus back to the port but it was full and they were told to wait for the next one—which never came. After a panicked phone call, a van was dispatched to pick them up but by the time it got them back to the port, Joshua and family watch the Encore sail off—with passports, clothes and prescription medications onboard. Cailyn joins us to share the ordeal in their own words as well as talk about the aftermath.Relying on ship wifi is slow, unsecure, sometimes not available & at foreign ports travelers don't want to pay their carriers' high fees. Roy Harley loves surfing and Christian ministry, but he's learned the importance of putting his family first, even when it seems unreasonable. In this conversation, Roy shares practical ways he's created meaningful connections with his kids. He also opens up about navigating the uncharted teen years with his kids and looking to God as the ultimate example of fatherhood.   Key Takeaways   Your family comes before your ministry.  The pathways you lay in your child's first 11 years are the most crucial. Train up your child in the way God has designed for them to go, and then allow that to flourish.  Your Christian faith must be your center of gravity, not a distant satellite.  Bring your full heart to every season of parenting, leaning on God and your community when you don't know the roadmap.   Roy Harley   Roy Harley is the International Director of Christian Surfers. He was the pioneering national director of CS South Africa and has been in full-time ministry for over 30 years. Roy is married to Sharon with daughter Cailyn and son Nathan.   Key Quotes   20:58 - " I love that phrase, the way you put the phrase, because I won't back down. There might be times when you need to soften. Once recently, I had to say to my daughter, She's 21 now, baby, I'm sorry because I stepped in and was your dad. I went all dad on the situation. I didn't acknowledge that you're an adult and I should have come to you because it was your choice, when I'd just went in guns blazing because I thought someone was going to hurt you, so I just didn't back down. Recognizing that probably the wisdom would have been to not back down, but in not backing down, in this situation, would have been something different. In this situation, would have been I have got your back, I'm behind you. But you're the adult, you need to take the step." 42:31 - "We all have to evaluate ourselves. The most practical thing on a daily basis I'd say is Jesus is too big to be a satellite in our world. He is way too big. We can't have Christianity as this thing that we have in the top right or left hand corner or orbiting whatever else we're doing. The simple fact of the way that God, our Father, Jesus, the Holy Spirit works is He realigns everything around His gravity."   Links from Today's Conversation   Send a Voice Message to DadAwesome Get 20% off the entire DadAwesome Store with code THANKSGIVING2024 10 Questions with Roy Harley — Christian Surfers  Fathered by God: Learning What Your Dad Could Never Teach You by John Eldredge The World Needs A Father by Cassie Carstens Love Does: Discover a Secretly Incredible Life in an Ordinary World by Bob Goff  The Surfers Bible  Christian Surfers YouVersion Bible Plans   Connect with dadAWESOME   Make a Donation to dadAWESOME Join the dadAWESOME Prayer Team Receive weekly encouragement by texting "dad" to 651-370-8618

In the words of Sharpay Evans “I want it all!” and we're conditioned to believe that we should have it all — a career, a family, good health, a social life, nice things, without having to give anything up. But let's be honest, our time and energy are finite resources and everything in life comes with tradeoffs. So the real key to “balance” is figuring out what you want to prioritize right now, and what can take the backseat.  This week we're tackling a question about how to balance and prioritize everything when you're feeling overwhelmed and stretched too thin. Juggling work, family and friends can leave us feeling like we aren't succeeding at any of it, but it's time to give ourselves a little grace and accept the season that we're in. Join us as we chat about:The myth of having it all and the truth about balanceThe “seasons” Gill and Cailyn are currently inThe best advice from Shonda RhimesThe difference between “legitimate overwhelm” and “lifestyle overwhelm” Mel Robbins' antidote to overwhelmIdentifying lies we tell ourselvesHow to actually prioritize You *can* have it all.
