Cancer. The very word can strike fear in the heart—and unfortunately, it touches many of us at some point in our lives, whether directly or indirectly through family and friends. But cancer… and herbs? What role can herbs possibly play in a big, scary, potentially deadly disease like that? If you're faced with a cancer diagnosis, what can you do to take control of your journey and feel empowered? Just as important, what steps can you take to help prevent cancer in the first place? These are just some of the issues covered in today's episode with Chanchal Cabrera—an herbalist with 35 years of clinical practice who specializes in holistic oncology. It was so good! And Chanchal's new book, Holistic Cancer Care, needs to be on everyone's bookshelf. It's an impressive and helpful book for anyone who's ever been touched by cancer, and even those who want to prevent it.By the end of this episode, you'll know:► What is patient-centered medicine, and why is it so vitally important when crafting a treatment plan?► Is it true that lymphatic herbs shouldn't be used by cancer patients? Why or why not?► Why sunscreen doesn't give you the protection you might think it does (and what you can do instead)► How can herbal medicine be included in cancer care, and what are some specific herbs that have been researched for this purpose?► Depending on the treatments selected and the cancer itself, patients may suffer with radiation burns and/or neuropathic pain. As a listener, you'll also receive free access to not one, but two downloadable recipe cards from Chanchal for soothing herbal creams. Here is one of my favorite takeaways from our conversation: “I see the role of a herbalist as an incredible opportunity to connect people with plants in such a way that they actually care enough about the environment the plants grow in to do something active to help the environment. Really, I see herbalism as an extremely effective form of activism and I consider myself an environmental warrior, an environmental activist through my herbal medicine work.”For those who don't already know her, Chanchal is a medical herbalist and has been in clinical practice for 35 years with a specialty in holistic oncology. She is the author of Fibromyalgia: A Journey towards Healing and her latest book, Holistic Cancer Care: An Herbal Approach to Preventing Cancer, Helping Patients Thrive during Treatment, and Minimizing the Risk of Recurrence, launched in April. She held the faculty chair in Botanical Medicine at the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine in New Westminster 2004-2016. She serves on the board of advisors of Dominion Herbal College in Burnaby, on the editorial board of Medical Herbalism clinical newsletter, and she publishes widely in professional journals and lectures internationally on medical herbalism, nutrition, and health.Chanchal is also a certified Shinrin Yoku (forest bathing) practitioner, a certified Master Gardener and a certified Horticulture Therapist. She lives on Vancouver Island, British Columbia where she and her husband manage Innisfree Farm and Botanic Garden, a 7 acre internationally registered botanic garden specializing in food and medicine plants, and where they host apprenticeships in sustainable food production and herbal medicine. Within veganism is a well-known movement of “absolutely no oil” proponents. Several high-profile vegan doctors and cardiologists promote a 100% no-oil diet for everyone across the population. In this episode, we discuss why this doesn't fit with the current peer-reviewed research. Not all oils are equal, and there's a large body of research showing certain types of oil are, in fact, good for us. Dr. Matthew Nagra is a Naturopathic Doctor devoted to bringing the most up-to-date, evidence-based nutrition information to both the public and his patients at his clinic in Vancouver. (We also discuss how science and naturopathy can coexist!) In 2018 Dr. Nagra graduated from the Boucher Institute after completing his Bachelor's of Science in Microbiology at the University of Victoria. He is also certified in plant-based nutrition through eCornell and the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies, and was a contributing author on Professional Health Systems' Nutrition textbook. He is also a public speaker and often tackles misinformation around diet and dives deep into the latest nutrition research on his social media.

Will oils cause heart disease? Are omega 6 fats inflammatory? There are few questions as hotly debated, even amongst health practitioners, as the subject of which oils - and how much - are beneficial, or even safe to eat. But is it REALLY a controversy in the research? Maybe not…and what the science says might actually surprise you. Which is why I asked my fave nutrition science communicator, Dr Matthew Nagra ND, to break down the latest scientific evidence on oils and fats in human nutrition. When I began researching natural nootropics and adaptogens, mushrooms continued to come up. I first blended Lion's mane into my MCT oil-laced coffee. Functional, adaptogenic mushrooms. Aside from a tasty addition to your meals, mushroom extracts act as adaptogens to bring the body back into balance and promote high performance. So I sought out a guest to explain the science of mushrooms in everyday language. Meet our guest Dr. Mason Bresett, ND studied human movement and then naturopathic medicine at the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine (BINM). His career has focused on sports medicine, chronic illness, immune disorders, HIV, and mental health. Mason worked on the St. Francis Herb Farm, which inspired a deep dive into herbal medicine where he later led research studies and taught at the BINM herb club. While immersed in herbal medicine research, Mason found himself gravitating toward adaptogenic botanicals. He has a general family naturopathic practice in Sarnia, Ontario called The Health Creation Lab. Mason's patients benefit from medicinal mushrooms, herbal medicine, hydrotherapy, acupuncture, nutrition, and mind-body medicine. Mason leads the Real Mushrooms Practitioners education group, where he provides medical doctors, naturopathic doctors, herbalists, pharmacists, and chiropractors with the latest research. This episodes guest is a brilliant naturopath Dr. Jason Hughes. Dr. Hughes schools the Doctor Dads about the importance of having a dialectic versus a debate. An important lesson for all of us to hear and practice. We chat about the global health crisis we are all in and what the future may bring. Topics discussed  Mixed science on wearing masks Corruption & Censorship in Science & Medicine Authoritarianism vs. Autonomy Global Immune Health Problems as root cause Moving forward and the ripple effects of the pandemic   Dr. Jason Hughes is a naturopathic physician who is truly passionate about helping people like you achieve greater health. Knowing that the word “doctor” means “teacher”, he strives to teach people how they can be well in body & mind. Being interested in how one can reach their potential led Dr. Hughes to create his own undergraduate degree. The program was entitled “bachelor degree with independent concentration” from the University of Massachusetts. Dr. Hughes titled his particular degree “Psycho-Physiology” which reflected his study of Biology, Physiology, Exercise Science and Psychology. In truth the main motivation was to get a theoretical foundation of the sciences that affected one's performance potential. Dr. Hughes knew that this degree was only the beginning of his knowledge quest and briefly considered becoming a Medical Doctor but decided against it because he didn't see many Medical Doctors helping people reach potential with their health. Rather he saw most MD's as getting people to a place where they just did not have symptoms anymore. When he stumbled upon the field of Naturopathic Medicine, he saw it as a system of medicine that could help people reach their potential and realized his calling. Dr. Hughes completed his medical training at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine , where he won several awards including being recognized for his clinical skills. He also completed a postgraduate residency at the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine in general family practice. Upon completion of this residency, Dr Hughes was asked to remain on staff as a clinical supervisor and teacher to future naturopathic doctors. Dr Hughes takes great joy in being able to express the intricate concepts associated with medicine in ways that students and patients can understand and embrace.
