This week we are once again fumbling our way to the end of a mystery as we're joined by our noir-comedy correspondent, as the great "Wild Eyes" Travis Woloshyn (Boom Pro Wrestling, Percy Jackson & The Olympians) returns to the program to talk a movie that is thematically linked to the last movie he was here to discuss. It's 2014's Inherent Vice, written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson from the novel by Thomas Pynchon, and starring Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, Owen Wilson, Katherine Waterston, Reese Witherspoon, Benicio Del Toro, Jena Malone, Hong Chau, Martin Short and Joanna Newsom. If it's not Anderson's funniest film it's certainly right up there, with two heavyweight comedy performances from Phoenix and Brolin, who are just as adept at character comedy as they are at broad slapstick. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to our conversation, you may be out of luck! Inherent Vice is not currently streaming in Canada at the time of publication. You may however be able to find it in stock at your local library. Other works discussed on this episode include The Long Goodbye, Trap, The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, Wrath of Man, The Usual Suspects, Fight Club, Don't Breathe, Gremlins, Batman ('89), Jurassic Park, Melvin and Howard, Aquaman & The Lost Kingdom, Twister, Twisters, Riverdale, The Big Lebowski, Mandy, Her, C'mon C'mon, You Were Never Really Here, Joker, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Sleeping With Other People, Alien: Covenant, Tenet, The Candidate, A Talking Cat?!, and other entries in the PTA ouevre like Phantom Thread, Punch-Drunk Love, Licorice Pizza, Magnolia, and Hard Eight. We'll be back next week to close out P.T.August with our monthly canon selection, as 1998's Boogie Nights is up for consideration this time. You can find that movie streaming in Canada on Crave, Starz and Hollywood Suite, so good luck to ya. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Traumatized by the suicide of her novelist boyfriend on Christmas morning, Morvern Callar (Morton), submits his last manuscript as her own, then sets out on a trip to Spain with her best friend Lana (Kathleen McDermont). Following Ramsay's acclaimed debut feature, RATCATCHER, and preceding her more widely-recognized WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN and YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE, MORVERN CALLAR is at turns moving, meditative, unsettling, and essential to understanding Ramsay's one-of-a-kind directorial approach. Welcome back to Bad Dads Film Review! Today we're diving into some unique cinematic waters – we're ranking the top 5 representations of professions in movies (for better or worse), delving into the gritty world of You Were Never Really Here, and flipping over to Gymnastics Academy for the kids' segment.Top 5 Representations of Professions in Movies:Lawyers in A Few Good Men: The intense courtroom drama gives us a gripping look at military lawyers in action.Chefs in Ratatouille: Who knew an animated film could so accurately capture the high-pressure environment of gourmet kitchens?Journalists in All the President's Men: A classic portrayal of investigative journalism at its finest, digging deep into the Watergate scandal.Musicians in Whiplash: A raw and intense look into the world of a jazz drummer and the demanding standards of music education.Astronauts in Apollo 13: A tense and realistic depiction of the challenges faced in space exploration.Did we actually mention any of these though??In our main feature, we take on You Were Never Really Here, a film that's as thought-provoking as it is brutal. Joaquin Phoenix delivers a powerhouse performance as a tormented enforcer on a rescue mission, unravelling layers of corruption and his own troubled past. The film's unflinching portrayal of violence and its psychological impact is not for the faint-hearted but offers a compelling look at a man grappling with the consequences of his profession. On a lighter note, "Gymnastics Academy" is perfect for the little ones. This show not only entertains but also provides a glimpse into the dedication and discipline required in gymnastics. It's a fun way for kids to understand the value of hard work, resilience, and teamwork. So, whether you're in for a deep, dark thriller or looking for some family-friendly gymnastics fun, we've got you covered. We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. If it hasn't been completely destroyed yet you can usually find us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review, on email at baddadsjsy@gmail.com or on our website baddadsfilm.com. On episode 17 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys discuss the last film in their Lynne Ramsay series, You Were Never Really Here (2018). In her fourth film of her career, Ramsay seemed to change direction back to the style of films she was making before We Need to Talk About Kevin, and strip everything back to a singular focus and tone rather than grander ideas. In doing so, she collaborated with one of Hollywood's most in demand actors, Joaquin Phoenix, to create a violent, tight neo-noir crime thriller about a mercenary haunted by his past, who is hired to rescue a politician's daughter who was kidnapped by a human trafficking network. Premiering at the Cannes Film Festival in 2017, Ramsay and Phoenix would go on to win prizes for her screenplay and his fully committed performance as Joe, some of the best work of his celebrated career. Ryan and Jay break down the film, speak briefly about Phoenix's filmography, the film's beautiful yet haunting ending, Jonny Greenwood's subtle score, and give out their rankings of Lynne Ramsay's small but fascinating body of work. On episode 16 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys discuss the next film in their Lynne Ramsay series, We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011). After coming out with two films back to back early in her career, Ramsay took nine years to return to the big screen with her third feature film that sparked tons of divisive reactions and was regarded as one of the best films of 2011 and of the 2010s decade. A tense psychological thriller about a mother's bond with her strange, disturbed child showcased Ramsay's unique ability to build tension throughout a complicated story, as well as the talents of one of the best working actresses in modern cinema, Tilda Swinton. Ryan and Jay breakdown their thoughts on the film, if it's still relevant subject matter about massive killings in America is handled properly as well as the narrative logistics of the aftermath, Swinton's stellar career, the titular actor in this film and their body of work, and how much bleak punishment is okay to put on the audience with a movie like this. In the second episode of the Sundance 2023 podcast season, we discuss Sundance's Spotlight Program, its only feature film program dedicated to films that premiered at other festivals. We discuss the program's history of picking great films and giving them the spotlight they needed (but didn't get at other festivals).  We discuss four of the five films programmed in the Spotlight section: Other People's Children, Joyland, L'Immensità, and The Eight Mountains. Since we already talked about Other People's Children in depth on a previous episode, we only discuss it briefly here. Additionally, we go deep on The Eight Mountains, which Alex loved, and briefly discuss the other two films in the program that we've seen which we weren't too keen on. We've actually written books featuring several of the films that screened in Spotlight, including You Were Never Really Here, Girlhood, and The Worst Person in the World. And several of the films previously programmed in the last decade have made our list of the best films of the 2010s. Click here to read the episode show notes. You will also find an AI-generated transcript in the show notes.  About the Sundance 2023 season This is the second episode of our new podcast season on the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. Ep. 73: Explorations of rape culture in Promising Young Woman and The Assistant (Members Only). Although The Assistant premiered at Telluride in 2020, it only really started generating buzz after its 2021 screening in the Spotlight Program at Sundance. In this episode, we discuss its depiction of rape culture alongside a bigger Sundance hit (which was also much less nuanced), Promising Young Woman. Ep. 107: Another Round and Oslo, August 31st: Are men OK? Masculinity, mental health, & addiction(Members Only). Joachim Trier first came to Sundance in 2012 with Oslo, August 31st (which premiered at Cannes in 2011), our #1 film of the 2010s. We talk about how the film addresses masculinity, mental health, & addiction and how this compares with the more recent film, a decade later, Another Round. Episodes on genre films featured in the Sundance Spotlight program Ep. 17: The Nightingale (Members Only): Having launched her career in the World Dramatic Competition at Sundance, Jennifer Kent once again returned to the festival with her second feature, The Nightingale, which premiered at Venice to an underwhelming response. We thought the film was rich and excellent in many ways (if flawed), and went deep on it on the podcast. Ep. 112: Raw and Thelma and modern female monsters (Members Only): After receiving rave reviews (and press about vomiting walkouts) at Cannes and TIFF, Julia Ducournau (who later won the Palme d'Or for Titane) screened her first feature, Raw at Sundance in the Spotlight program. We talk about the film in comparison with Joachim Trier's Thelma. Ep. 38 Australian Westerns: The True History of the Kelly Gang, Sweet Country, and The Dressmaker (Members Only): Warwick Thornton's fantastic feature Sweet Country previously screened in the Sundance Spotlight program after premiering (and winning an award) at Venice and TIFF. This week I welcome back Jonathan Ames to the show. Jonathan is one of my favorite writers of all time. He has published several books (The Extra Man, You Were Never Really Here, A Named Named Doll) and is the creator for the TV series Bored to Death and Blunt Talk. His latest novel, The Wheel of Doll is available now through Mulholland Books. It's always a pleasure talking with Jonathan - and this time I even had his dog Fezzik hanging with me in the interview chair. He turned me into a sweater by the end of our conversation. Thanks for listening! Kyler --- Purchase THE WHEEL OF DOLL (Book #2) Purchase A MAN NAMED DOLL (Book #1) --- Bio & Synopsis from Mulholland Books: The Wheel of Doll (Mulholland Books) The eponymous and hapless detective Happy Doll returns with a new  philosophy and a new case in this second installment of a series "that's  a tightly coiled double helix of offbeat humor and unflinching  violence" (New York Times Book Review). Although badly scarred and down to his last kidney after the previous  caper, Happy Doll is back in business. When a beguiling young woman  turns up at his door, it's Doll's past that comes knocking. Mary  DeAngelo is searching for her estranged mother, Ines Candle—a singular  and troubled woman Doll once loved. The last he'd seen her she'd been  near-death: arms slit like envelopes. Although she survived the episode,  she vanished shortly thereafter. Now, years later, Mary claims Ines is  alive and has recently made contact—messaging her on Facebook and  calling her from a burner phone—only to disappear once again. Although  his psychoanalyst would discourage it, Doll takes the case, desperate to  see Ines again. But as the investigation deepens, there are questions  he can't shake. What's led the flighty Ines to reappear? Is Mary only  relaying half the truth? And who is Mary's strange and mysterious  husband? In this wholly original follow-up to A Man Named Doll, Happy  travels through L.A., Washington, Oregon and back again—a journey that  gets wilder and woolier with each turn. An irreverent and inventive  mystery, The Wheel of Doll is not to be missed. Jonathan Ames is the author of I Pass Like Night; The Extra Man; What's Not to Love?; My Less Than Secret Life; Wake Up, Sir!; I Love You More Than You Know; The Alcoholic; The Double Life Is Twice as Good, and most recently, You Were Never Really Here (adapted into the acclaimed film starring Joaquin Phoenix). He's the creator of two television series, Blunt Talk and Bored to Death, and has had two amateur boxing matches, fighting as "The Herring Wonder."
