“Technology is evolving quickly … and the government is embracing that. And so as they look at modernization and transformation initiatives, how can we look at AI and machine learning and different ways to incorporate these technologies into improving their solutions, improving their services to their constituents, and then integrating that into this whole mindset of agility.” How does a small but mighty Agile consulting firm help government clients tackle the unique challenges and opportunities of large-scale enterprise transformation? Adam finds out in this episode with Beth Hatter, Director of Agile Training, and Jason Fair, CEO of Genesis Consulting Partners. The discussion covers topics including the influx of new, tech-savvy talent seeking to improve government services for citizens, how agencies are adopting a different approach to deliver and manage their products, and the opportunities ahead for both the government and Genesis Consulting. This week's Trainer Talk is with Olatunde, SAFe Program Consultant (SPC). A student asked about the importance of psychological safety in a scaled agile environment. If you are interested in attending a training class, please view a list of our public SAFe training classes. Key Takeaways So, someone asked me recently, “why do you believe in psychological safety? Why is it important when you're working in an enterprise and have teams of teams?” My answer is a simple one. Anytime you cannot bring yourself to work and be part of the team, you don't belong in that organization. Anytime your words are not valued, or your feedback is devalued, you have outgrown the organization. The organization might be operating in its winter season while you are operating in your summer season. Or, you might be in the winter season, and the organization is operating in the summer season. Did you get my gist? Psychological safety means the ability for me to bring myself to work and add value to the organization as the organization adds value to my life. Without psychological safety, there's no trust. Without sociological safety, there's no passion. When you lose passion for what you do, when you lose passion for where you are, it means the organization does not have safety dealing with you. And, you as well don't have the safety to deal with the organization. However, when you have psychological safety, the passion it brings with it brings innovation. Innovation brings new ideas. Where there are new ideas, it brings growth. Where there is growth, you bring multiple clients. Psychological safety is important when you're working in an enterprise. When you come to any of my SAFe training, I always take half a day, maybe three hours, to talk about the importance of psychological safety, respect for people, and respect for cultures. We welcome back Chuck Haggard of Agile Training for another very timely show. Chuck offers very sound advise on how to end the riots plaguing U.S. streets, more use of force perspective along with some very interesting history. We even hit on what Chuck prefers for home defense. This week we are blessed to have Marshal Chuck Haggard of Agile Training and Consulting on the show. He is a 30 year veteran of both law enforcement and the military, and is a well-known subject matter expert in police use of force. Chuck provides some much needed perspective and expert analysis of the current events to include the tragic killing of George Floyd by a now charged rogue police officer. He hits on the current riots and the history of similar riots in the 60s, along with the movement to defund the police and the possible impact if this were to occur. On a lighter note the interview moves to one of Chuck's other areas of expertise and that is the efficacy and use of oleoresin capsicum spray (OC pepper spray). "I would invite anyone who thinks its easy to arrest someone who doesn't want to be arrested to put handcuffs on someone who doesn't want to go with them, check in at their local Jiu-Jitsu Dojo and try some Jiu-Jitsu. If you've never done it before, you will quickly find that even though you are rolling with another white belt, its not as easy as you might think. And you're in a setting where you both agree not to hurt each other and are training with an agreed on set of rules." Essentially, if you haven't even done that, you have little perspective to critique law enforcement on the use of force and how you would do it better. You simply don't know what you don't know. Chuck provides some excellent commentary so DONT MISS IT!
